All the Badals, led by five-time Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the eldest candidate at 94 in fray for the 117-member Punjab Assembly, as well as their kin, on Thursday lost to AAP's greenhorns. The eldest Badal, who won the seat five times in a row since 1997, lost to Gurmeet Khuddian from Lambi by 11,357 votes, while his son and Shiromani <keyword id="42824" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="akali-dal" source="Orion">Akali Dal</keyword> (SAD) chief and Member of Parliament Sukhbir Badal faced humiliating defeat from Jalalabad, and his son-in-law Adesh Partap Singh Kairon faced defeat from Patti in Tarn Taran district from AAP's Laljit Singh Bhullar. Sukhbir Badals's brother-in-law Bikram Majithia and his estranged cousin Manpreet Badal, who was in the fray on a Congress ticket, also lost the poll from their respective seats. As per the Election Commission, AAP's Khuddian, a Congress rebel, was polled 65,717 votes and the elderly Badal got 54,360. The junior Badal has lost the elections by a margin of 23,310 votes from Jalalabad to AAP's Jagdeep Kamboj. Majithia, who was in the fray from Amritsar (East) seat, took the third spot, with 25,112 votes. His archrival and state Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu also suffered a loss in his seat, garnering only 32,807 votes. Both senior leaders were defeated by AAP's novice Jeevan Jyot Kaur, who received 39,520 votes. A five-time MLA and two-time Finance Minister, Manpreet Badal, who is the son of Gurdas Badal, the younger brother of Parkash Badal, lost the elections from Bathinda Urban. He first won in 1995 on a SAD ticket from Gidderbaha and retained the seat in 1997, 2002, and 2007. He quit the party in 2010 and floated his own political outfit, People's Party of Punjab. In 2016, Manpreet Badal merged his outfit with the Congress, after having lost from both Gidderbha and Maur seats. He then won the 2017 elections as a Congress candidate from Bathinda. "We whole-heartedly and with total humility accept the mandate given by Punjabis. I am grateful to lakhs of Punjabis who placed their trust in us and to SAD-BSP workers for their selfless toil. We will continue to serve them with humility in the role they have assigned to us," Sukhbir Badal tweeted. AAP's chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann in his first public address after his victory said: "Bade (elderly) Badal Sahib has lost, Sukhbir (Badal) has lost from Jalalabad, Capt (Amarinder Singh) has lost from Patiala, Sidhu and Majithia are also losing, Channi has lost on both the seats." Congress firebrand legislator Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who retained his Gidderbaha constituency in Muktsar district, said he has been saying that all Badals, including Congress's Manpreet Singh Badal, were playing a fixed match. He said he had even asked the electorates to defeat all Badals, including his colleague, from wherever they are contesting. "This is a message for the Badals, all the Badals, a message for Bathinda wala Badal (Manpreet Badal) and Lambi wala Badal (Parkash Singh Badal), they are playing a fixed match. In Bathinda, they are with the Congress and here they are Akalis. Such traitors should be exposed," he had said during campaigning. With Rupay Credit Card on UPI, mobile payments pioneer Paytm deepens its leadership in UPI

Payments through credit and debit cards accounted for 8% in volume and 14% in value, the report added. “2022 is another momentous year for the payments space in India. We are successfully sailing through the aftermath of Covid-19, the total cards in circulation has breached 1 billion mark, UPI is tracking over 6 billion transactions per month, about 53 million FASTags have been issued, and over 20,000 billers are live on Bharat BillPay ecosystem,” Ramesh Narasimhan, chief executive officer-India, Worldline, said. The top five states that recorded the highest transactions at physical merchant stores were Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The top five cities were Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai and <keyword id="2094" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pune" source="Orion">Pune</keyword>. How does India pay? UPI (Unified Payments Interface) transactions volume and value have seen an increase of about 118% and over 98% respectively in Q2 2022 as compared to the same quarter last year. The top UPI apps in terms of volume were PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm. “What could be a game-changer for UPI transactions will be linking credit cards onto the platform – it is currently only Rupay but could increase going forward – and this could further supercharge UPI transactions, especially in terms of P2M average ticket sizes,” Worldline said. The average ticket size (ATS) for UPI P2P transactions was ₹2,425 and for UPI P2M transactions it was ₹820 as of June 2022, the report said. The top remitter banks during the quarter were <keyword id="13222" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sbi" source="Orion">SBI</keyword>, HDFC Bank, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank and ICICI Bank. The top beneficiary banks were Paytm Payments Bank, Yes Bank, SBI, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank. The transaction volume passing through Bharat Bill Payment Central Unit (BBPCU) during the quarter stood at 238.31 million while the transaction value was ₹403.02 billion. It registered a growth rate of 99% and 108% in volume and value respectively as compared with Q2 2021. The total number of credit and debit cards in circulation reach 1 billion Alongside UPI, adoption of credit cards is growing at a healthy pace, revealed Worldline. The total number of credit and debit cards in circulation has reached 1 billion in Q2 2022 especially with festivities around the corner. “While the number of credit cards increased by 25% from ₹62.81 million in June 2021 to 78.7 million in June 2022, debit cards increased by 2% from ₹906 million to ₹921.75 million during the same period,” Worldline said. As of June 2022, the top credit-card issuing banks were HDFC Bank, SBI, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and RBL Bank while the top debit-card issuing banks were SBI, BOB, Union Bank, <keyword id="62034" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="punjab-national-bank" source="Orion">Punjab National Bank</keyword> and Canara Bank. Credit cards volume and value stood at 688.65 million and ₹3.28 trillion respectively. “Even though credit card volume at POS and e-commerce are nearly equal, the value of e-commerce transactions is higher as compared with the value of transactions at POS. This is in line with the general trend of transactions of high-ticket items moving from the physical to the digital space,” Worldline said. In terms of value, consumers transacted ₹1,226.29 billion at POS terminals and ₹2,053.66 billion at e-commerce through credit cards in the second quarter. In Q2 2022, debit card transactions volume and value stood at 973.12 million and ₹1.91 trillion respectively. Prepaid cards transaction volume and value was 412.29 million and ₹206.36 billion respectively. When it comes to mobile payments, the number of transactions through mobile wallets was 1.52 billion and the value was ₹574.64 billion. Transactions through wallets are growing steadily recording a 38% increase in volume and 27% in value when compared to Q2 2021, revealed Worldline data. National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) processed about 829 million transactions worth ₹129 billion. As of March 2022, about 52.9 million NETC FASTags have been issued since the inception of the NETC program. Aadhaar-Enabled Payment Service transactions recorded a substantial volume of over 679 million transactions, registering about 38% growth over Q2 2021. UPI is India’s favourite payment mode with transactions worth ₹30.4 trillion in April-June, says report

The rising demand for credit in last couple of days has prompted banks to garner funds aggressively through certificates of deposits (CD), bonds, and fixed deposits (FD). The need for aggressive fund raising arose after the surplus liquidity in the banking system dropped sharply from the record high. According to the data compiled by Prime database, banks have so far raised around Rs 42,000 crore through CDs. This was even after the rates on this instruments are rising sharply. The data also showed that Indian Bank, topped the fund raising list via CDs, raising worth Rs 13,550 crore, which was followed by <keyword id="6357149" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hdfc-bank" source="Orion">HDFC Bank</keyword> raising Rs 6,550 crore and <keyword id="62034" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="punjab-national-bank" source="Orion">Punjab National Bank</keyword> raising Rs 2,875 crore so far in August. Apart from this, there are various banks such as <keyword id="6354731" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="state-bank-of-india" source="Orion">State Bank of India</keyword> (SBI), Indian Overseas Bank, Indian Bank, Punjab National Bank, <keyword id="46013" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kotak-mahindra-bank" source="Orion">Kotak Mahindra Bank</keyword>, ICICI Bank, among others have increased their FD raised 5-20 basis points across maturities to attract more investors. "As liquidity is draining out in a calibrated manner from the system, banks are compelled to raise funds through CDs and even through fixed deposits. Some banks are offering special rates for higher FD amounts. Banks credit growth has remained in double digits handily outpacing the deposit growth. The credit growth has increased in couple of weeks due to low base effect, small ticket size loans, higher working capital requirements due to elevated inflation and a shift to bank borrowings on account of high yields in the capital market. The bank credit has grown over 14 per cent on-year, as per data on the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> showed. Meanwhile, liquidity in the banking system has cropped sharply in last couple of months. Currently, it around Rs 45,000 crore, as compared to Rs 1.30 lakh crore last week. The sharp drop has been witnessed due to payments for government bonds and outflows on account of goods and service tax payments. Going forward, market participants expect banks to raise more funds because credit demand is likely to rise amid festive season. Banks aggressively garnering funds via CDs, FDs amid firm credit off take

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Tuesday ordered the blocking of apps, website and social media accounts linked to the banned organisation, Sikhs For Justice (SFJ). In a statement, the Ministry said it has ordered the blocking of apps, website, and social media accounts of foreign-based 'Punjab Politics TV' having close links with the SFJ, deemed unlawful under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. "Relying on intelligence inputs that the channel was attempting to use online media to disturb public order during the ongoing State Assembly Elections, the Ministry used emergency powers under the IT Rules on February 18 to block the digital media resources of Punjab Politics TV," it said. The Ministry claimed that the contents of the blocked apps, website, and social media accounts had the potential to incite communal disharmony and separatism; and were found to be detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India, security of the state, and public order. "It was also observed that the launch of new apps and social media accounts was timed to gain traction during the ongoing elections. The government of India remains vigilant and committed to secure the overall information environment in India and thwart any actions having the potential to undermine India's sovereignty and integrity," it added. In January, the Ministry had ordered the blocking of 35 YouTube-based news channels and two websites which were involved in spreading fake news against India in a coordinated manner over digital media. In December last year, the Centre blocked 20 YouTube channels and two websites when the emergency powers under the IT Rules, 2021 were first utilised. Pensioners who are aged 80 years and above can submit it between October 1 and November 30. Earlier, the pensioners had to visit a bank, treasury or post office physically to submit their certificates. According to the circular by the Department of Pension and Pensioners' Welfare dated September 20, the pensioners from now onwards can submit their life certificates using the Doorstep Banking Alliance service or the Doorstep Service of the postal department for submission of the Digital Life Certificate. These are the two ways in which pensioners can submit their life certificates at comfort of their homes — <ol><li>Doorstep Banking Alliance </li></ol>Doorstep Banking (DSB) is an alliance between 12 public sector banks which includes <keyword id="6354731" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-bank-of-india" source="Orion">State Bank of India</keyword> (SBI), <keyword id="62034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="punjab-national-bank" source="Orion">Punjab National Bank</keyword> (PNB), Bank of Baroda and others. As per the circular, the public sector bank (PSB) alliance, under the umbrella of DSB, has introduced the service in which the agent will come to the home of the <keyword id="85012" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pensioner" source="Orion">pensioner</keyword> to render the service. The pensioner can book the service through a mobile app named ‘Doorstep Banking’ or website or toll-free number. The toll free number is 18001213721 or 18001037188. A nominal fee would be levied on the pensioner who avails this service. 2. Doorstep service for life certificate submission via postman The Department of Posts along with the Ministry of Electronics rolled out the Doorstep Service for submission of Digital Life Certificates through the postman. To avail this facility, pensioners can contact his/her nearest post office or place a request for a doorstep visit through the ‘PostInfo’ app or through the website. The digital life certificate is paperless and the certificate is issued on an instant basis. It also said that it is working with Paytm to bring the app back on the Play Store. A search for the Paytm app on the Play Store confirmed the app’s removal. And in the case where there are repeated policy violations, we may take more serious action which may include terminating Google Play Developer accounts. Our policies are applied and enforced on all developers consistently," the blog post added. We have reached out to Google for a statement. Big blow to Paytm ahead of IPL starting tomorrow Paytm First Games – which recently onboarded Sachin Tendulkar as its brand ambassador – is the Indian digital payments’ leaders foray into the fantasy gaming segment. Google’s ban is a huge blow to the app as the IPL begins tomorrow and Paytm First Games was hoping to cash in on the cricketing event. Paytm First Games had an elaborate plan to establish its stronghold in the fantasy gaming market. The app aims to get over 100 million users during the upcoming Indian Premier League and has planned over 200 live events on the platform over the next six months. The other popular fantasy sports app Dream11 has never been available on the Playstore. Last year in June, the Bombay High Court had dismissed a PIL filed by an advocate and said that Dream11 is a game of skill and not of chance. The PIL had claimed that the online fantasy league game encourages gambling. Earlier, the Punjab and Haryana High Court too had declared the Dream11 format of fantasy sports as legal. The order said that the game requires considerable skill and judgment. This order was further ratified by the Supreme Court.
