"Too busy to exercise on a regular basis? Exercise only on weekends to derive similar mortality benefits," he wrote on X. The findings showed that people who exercised once or twice per week had a 15 per cent lower risk of death, similar to those who worked out on 3 or more days per week. "The results suggest that even busy adults could benefit from taking part in one or two sessions of exercise per week," said the researchers of the study from Universidad de los Andes, Colombia. Exercising even once a week is better than not: Expert

Chennai, <keyword id="6382967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apollo" source="Orion">Apollo</keyword> Hospitals Enterprise Ltd has recorded a standalone profit after tax of Rs 294.8 crore for the three months ended September 30, 2023, the healthcare major said on Friday. Apollo Hospitals reported a standalone profit after tax of Rs 279.1 crore during the corresponding quarter last year. For the half-year period ended September 30, 2023, the standalone profit after tax stood at Rs 508.9 crore, as against Rs 612.3 crore registered in the same period last year, the company said on Friday. Total income on a standalone basis during the quarter under review grew to Rs 1,931.1 crore from Rs 1,758.5 crore during the corresponding quarter of the previous year. For the six-month period ended September 30, 2023, the standalone total income grew to Rs 3,637.3 crore against Rs 3,298.7 crore registered in the same period last year. In a statement, Apollo Hospitals said the board, based on the recommendations of the investment committee, has evaluated and approved an expansion plan for the company involving a balance capital outlay of around Rs 3,400 crore after reckoning for land/asset acquisition costs already incurred. "(Apollo Hospitals is) on track to add 2,300 beds across eight locations at a cost of Rs 3,400 crore over the next three financial years," the statement read. The mode of financing would be internal accruals and debt financing. "This expansion plan is in line with the plan to expand footprint in identified strategic locations to drive continued business growth and cater to the increasing demand for quality healthcare services across the country," the company said. Apollo Hospitals posts July-September 2023 standalone PAT of Rs 294.8 cr

New Delhi, <keyword id="56368" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apollo-Hospitals" source="Orion">Apollo Hospitals</keyword> on Friday said its consolidated profit after tax declined by 47 per cent to Rs 167 crore in the first quarter ended June 30, 2023. The healthcare major had reported a PAT (profit after tax) of Rs 317 crore in the April-June quarter of previous fiscal. Revenue grew by 16 per cent to Rs 4,418 crore in the first quarter as against Rs 37,96 crore in the same period a year ago, Apollo Hospitals said in a regulatory filing. As on June 30, 2023, Apollo Hospitals had 7,798 operating beds across the network, out of which 14 hospitals were new with 2,380 operating beds, it said. The new hospitals have a utilisation of 60 per cent and are expected to witness double-digit growth in volumes and improvement in utilisation and profitability going forward, it added. "As we step into the next quarter, our focus remains steadfast - to augment our doctors' expertise and revolutionise the overall patient experience as we continue steering Apollo towards a future where healthcare is proactive, personalised, and accessible to all," Apollo Hospitals Group Chairman Prathap C Reddy noted. Shares of the company were trading 0.32 per cent down at Rs 4,905.05 apiece on the BSE.

Prolonged symptoms of <keyword id="8763838" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="COVID-19" source="Orion">COVID-19</keyword> may be associated with difficulty recognising faces, a little-known condition called face blindness, and navigational problems, according to a study. Previous studies have shown that COVID-19 can cause a range of neurological problems, including the loss of smell and taste, and impairments in attention, memory, speech, and language, known as "brain fog". The latest research, published in the journal Cortex, is the first to report prosopagnosia, or face blindness, following symptoms consistent with COVID-19. The condition that can make people fail to recognise familiar faces, has been estimated to affect between 2 and 2.5 per cent of people in the world. The researchers assessed the case of Annie, a 28-year-old customer service representative and part-time portrait artist in the US, who was diagnosed with COVID-19 in March 2020 and suffered a symptom relapse two months later. "When I first met Annie, she told me that she was unable to recognise the faces of her family," said <keyword id="16888434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Marie-Luise-Kieseler" source="Orion">Marie-Luise Kieseler</keyword>, a graduate student at <keyword id="224383" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dartmouth-College" source="Orion">Dartmouth College</keyword> in the US, adding Annie now relies on voices to recognise people. Annie also experienced navigational deficits after having COVID-19. She has had difficulty remembering where particular sections in her grocery store are and relies on Google maps and its pin function to remember where she parks her car. "The combination of prosopagnosia and navigational deficits that Annie had is something that caught our attention because the two deficits often go hand in hand after somebody either has had brain damage or developmental deficits," said study senior author Brad Duchaine, a professor at Dartmouth. "That co-occurrence is probably due to the two abilities depending on neighbouring brain regions in the temporal lobe," Duchaine said in a statement. "Firstly, long Covid can cause a range of neurological symptoms which may affect the brain regions responsible for face recognition, causing difficulty in processing visual information and recognising familiar faces," Suri told PTI. "Secondly, Covid-19 can cause inflammation and damage to the blood vessels, which can lead to reduced blood flow to the brain. This can cause brain damage and cognitive impairments, including face blindness," he added. The research team conducted a series of tests with Annie to evaluate her problems with face recognition and determine whether she also has difficulties with other perceptual or cognitive abilities. In one test, Annie was sequentially presented with 60 images of celebrity faces and was asked to name them. Annie correctly identified 29 per cent of the 48 celebrities whom she was familiar with as compared to most people, who can correctly identify 84 per cent of familiar celebrities. The second test was a doppelganger test. Annie was shown a celebrity's name and then presented with images of two faces: the face of a celebrity and that of someone similar, and was then asked to identify which face was the famous person. She identified the celebrity in 69 per cent of the 58 trials, as compared to 87 per cent in the control group. "Our results from the test with unfamiliar faces show that it wasn't just that Annie couldn't recall the name or biographical information of a famous person that she was familiar with, but she really has trouble learning new identities," said Kieseler. The research team also obtained self-reported data from 54 individuals who had long COVID with symptoms for 12 weeks or more, and 32 persons who had reported that they had fully recovered from COVID-19. Most respondents with long COVID reported that their cognitive and perceptual abilities had decreased since they had COVID. "It was not just a small concentration of really impaired cases but a broad majority of people in the long COVID group reported noticeable difficulties doing things that they were able to do before contracting COVID-19 without any problems," Kieseler said. "Our study highlights the sorts of perceptual problems with face recognition and navigation that can be caused by COVID-19 -- it is something that people should be aware of, especially physicians and other health care professionals," Duchaine added. Long Covid infection linked with risk of developing 'face blindness' says study

Amid a spike in <keyword id="64895" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dengue-cases" source="Orion">dengue cases</keyword> in the national capital, many people down with viral infection are exhibiting "overlapping symptoms" of COVID-19 and the vector-borne disease, leaving both patients and doctors perplexed about the exact diagnosis. Cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between July and November, sometimes stretching till mid-December. Its symptoms include high fever, headache, rash and muscle and joint pain, which are quite similar to that of COVID-19 which also includes fever or chills, muscle or body aches, fatigue and headache among others. In such a situation it has become difficult to ascertain whether a person suffering from fever, body ache and headache is <keyword id="8764262" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="covid" source="Orion">Covid</keyword> positive or not, doctors said. "Covid cases are declining right now, but the virus is still there. I am still seeing Covid cases in my OPD. In the last 3-4 days, two cases were detected in OPD and one later in an ICU. However, on an average, dengue infection is on rise right now," said Dr Suranjit Chatterjee, a senior consultant at <keyword id="56368" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="apollo-hospitals" source="Orion">Apollo Hospitals</keyword>. "There are a few overlapping symptoms when it comes to both dengue and Covid, such as fever, bodyache and headache, and in such cases diagnosis cannot be that black and white. So, we are prescribing both Covid and dengue test to ascertain the exact infection. In fact, in some cases, even malaria and typhoid tests are also being done," he said. However, if a patient is suffering more from sore throat and cough and their fever is not very high, then Covid infection is more probable. So, a dengue test is not being prescribed in cases "where we can differentiate from the nature of symptoms," Chatterjee added. Doctors at many government and private hospitals are reporting a rise in footfall in OPDs after a continuous spike in dengue cases in <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> in the past two weeks. Most of the patients are complaining of fever, cough, sore throat and body ache or headache or both. Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital - Delhi government's largest hospital and the main COVID-19 facility - is also reporting dengue cases with some of the patients being admitted after their platelets level had fallen beyond the normal range. Dengue fever can result in a drop in white blood cell and platelet counts. The normal platelet count in the body ranges from 1.5 to 4 lacs, which can go down to as low as 20,000 to 40,000 in the case of dengue patients. "Yes, rising dengue cases are making diagnosis difficult now. Earlier, we would analyse symptoms and Covid test would be prescribed if they had fever or other matching symptoms. Now not only patients, but even doctors are confused about the exact ailment due to their overlapping symptoms," a senior doctor at the hospital said. Over 520 dengue cases have been reported in Delhi this year till September 21, as per the data shared by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). According to a report released by the civic body on September 26, as many as 281 cases have been reported this month alone till September 21. The spurt in dengue cases in the national capital has come after Delhi was lashed by incessant rains recently. 106 cases of malaria and 20 cases of chikungunya have also been reported this year in Delhi in the same period, the report said. Of the 525 total cases recorded till September 21 this year, 75 were reported in August, which is the highest number of dengue cases logged between January 1 to September 21 since 2017, when the corresponding figure was 1,807. Malaria, dengue and chikungunya are accompanied by high-grade fever and, therefore, doctors feel that people might think that they have contracted COVID-19, or even vice-versa. Chatterjee said many people are reluctant to get the COVID-19 test done, fearing they will have to go in isolation as they want to "go on with their lives". "So, given the slump in daily Covid cases in Delhi and rise in dengue cases, many are assuming that if they have fever or sore throat or body ache, it is either regular viral infection or something else, but not Covid. But, it could be Covid too, as the coronavirus is still amidst us," he cautioned and urged people to get themselves tested for Covid too if symptoms persist. At many workplaces, employees continue to work despite having cough, cold or sore throat, while earlier when the <keyword id="8785701" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Covid-19-cases" source="Orion">COVID-19 cases</keyword> were on the rise, it would have been a strict no-no with an option of a 'work from home' regimen given to them, doctors said. "But, I would urge people to not assume any kind of fever as a regular flu, if their symptoms are prolonged and intense, consult a doctor," Chatterjee added. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Sangeeta Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo hospitals said, "Artificial intelligence is useful in early diagnosis. The incidence of disease will come down and the quality of care will go up and we will see universal access to care." "AI won't replace the doctors but those doctors will be replaced who don't use Artificial Intelligence," she added. The expert said that a disease cannot be cured by code (used in the AI) and that there will always be a requirement for nurses and doctors. Detailing the importance of AI, she explained further about the purpose behind two days conference with international healthcare professionals. "Basically we have been conducting this conference of transforming healthcare with IT and patient safety for the last 9 -10 years and the ideology is really that healthcare is transforming at a very rapid pace and technology is enabling that transformation," she said. The expert further explained the use of the hospital information system with no errors. "Whether it's in the arena of patient safety or quality, in standardised pathways in hospital information systems, all these are helping to do the same process in a repeated manner perfectly with no error," she said. She informed that on February 5, the hospital launched a Clinical <keyword id="16516082" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="intelligence-engine" source="Orion">Intelligence Engine</keyword> for all doctors for free. "On February 5, our Chairman's birthday, we launched and gifted to India. Clinical Intelligence Engine (CIE) will be free for all doctors. This is the beginning of an AI engine, which can prompt a doctor on what is the best and most appropriate care. I want to highlight this here that this is not for individual patients," Reddy said. "So like the example I gave earlier, if a patient has a cough, you know you will say it is a dry cough. How many days, and what are the symptoms? Is it bronchitis? Are you in Delhi as the pollution levels are high here? But maybe also that patient was treated for lung cancer one month ago. So his doctor will know all these things. Therefore this tool is not for the public, but it is given free for use by any doctor in India to assist them in treating better and over the years this engine will become more and more powerful," she said.
