New Delhi, Feb 13 () Healthcare major Apollo Hospitals Enterprise on Thursday reported a 80.36 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 89.96 crore for the quarter ended December on account of robust performance across verticals. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 49.87 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise said in a filing to the BSE. Consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 2,911.74 crore for the quarter under consideration. It was at Rs 2,495.04 crore for the same period a year ago. The company's board has declared an interim dividend of Rs 3.25 per equity share of Rs 5 each for the financial year ending March 31, 2020, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise said. "In addition to arming ourselves with newer offerings and treatment technologies, the resilience of our service model that offers comprehensive care across multiple centres and formats, is enabling us to maintain a focused trajectory of growth amidst a dynamic and fluid operating environment," Apollo Hospitals Chairman Prathap C Reddy said. Even as Apollo Hospitals widens the suite of preventive healthcare offerings, "we are rapidly evolving our capabilities across key specialties such as oncology, neurosciences, orthopaedics and critical care to meet the healthcare challenges of the nation," he added. As on December 31, 2019, Apollo Hospitals had over 7,470 operating beds across the network (excluding AHLL and managed beds), out of which 14 were new hospitals with 1,990 operating beds. The new hospitals are expected to see increase in volumes and utilisation going forward, the company said. The total store network of standalone pharmacies as of December 31, 2019 stood at 3,700 operational stores, it added. Apollo Health &amp; Lifestyle Ltd (AHLL), a wholly owned subsidiary which houses the retail healthcare business of Apollo Hospitals, had 917 centers in total as of December 31, 2019, the company said. New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS) India is seeing a significant rise in cases of non communicable diseases like <keyword id="6364492" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="obesity" source="Orion">obesity</keyword>, diabetes, <keyword id="22984" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hypertension" source="Orion">hypertension</keyword> among children. Health experts on Monday blamed the surge on ever-increasing consumption of junk food that is loaded with excess and unhealthy sugar, salt and fat. Speaking to IANS, Dr Sathya Sriram, CEO - Preventive Health, Apollo, shared that among Indian children there has been a notable increase in obesity, <keyword id="189815" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pre-diabetes" source="Orion">pre-diabetes</keyword>, <keyword id="519596" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fatty-liver-disease" source="Orion">fatty liver disease</keyword>, and hypertension -- “with obesity cases tripling and hypertension quadrupling in the past five years”. These diseases, which were till a decade ago, largely associated with adulthood, are now increasing “in an age group we have never considered in the past. At Apollo, we have observed that the rate of incidence of NCDs (diabetes, obesity, hypertension, etc.) has nearly doubled in children between 5-17 years of age over the past decade”. Dr Sriram noted that 5-17 years is an age group where there should ‘technically and historically’ not be a growing impact of lifestyle diseases. However Apollo’s data, based on an analysis of nearly 10,000 screenings across walk-ins and campus outreach, showed 17 per cent prediabetes cases -- projecting a potentially early onset of diabetes as they step into adulthood. The incidence of diabetes was also found to have doubled in these ages over the past 5 years -- from 1.37 per cent in 2018 to 3.68 per cent in 2023 across a nearly similar sample size, as indicated by HbA1C levels. Similarly, the data also showed hypertension cases in children as young as 7-year-olds, which is roughly 6 per cent of those screened, Dr Sriram said. A sedentary lifestyle and genetic predisposition are important risk factors. But, Dr Arun Gupta, a paediatrician and Convener of Nutrition Advocacy in Public Interest (NAPi) -- a national think-tank on nutrition, blames the surge on rising childhood obesity, majorly caused by the increased consumption of junk or ultra processed foods (UPF). “Obesity is a precursor for the non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension and cancer,” he told IANS. He cited the National Family Health Surveys (NFHS) 3,4 and 5, which shows obesity is quickly rising in children and adult men and women. This can also be seen in the context of the growth of the ultra processed food industry in India, said Dr Gupta. A recent World Health Organization (WHO) report showed that in India, the UPF industry grew at a compound annual growth rate of 13.37 per cent in terms of retail sales value between 2011 and 2021. It is expected that UPF would expand more quickly than staple foods. The doctor added that even the families are not bothered about what the children are eating. “For example, biscuits are a very common junk food. While it seems unharmful, it contains salt, sugar and fats more than the WHO recommendations for daily intake. Lack of awareness on the risk it poses can explain why its consumption is rising among kids,” he told IANS. Dr Sriram also highlighted the rise of mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression in children, which is further intensified by social and environmental factors. “Lifestyle shifts towards greater screen time are not only leading to orthopaedic issues but also contributing to learning problems in children,” he told IANS. “Beyond non-communicable diseases and early mental health issues, a variety of conditions including vitamin and nutritional deficiencies, functional changes, and vision and hearing problems are important factors that can share a child’s future health. "These conditions, if unmanaged, can lead to serious complications and affect life quality and longevity,” Dr Sriram said. Dr Gupta called for “strict and clear regulation” on UPFs. “It would be a good step if children are encouraged to eat real food in their school canteen,” he said, noting that it will then also be extended at family level. Dr Sriram advised parents to make health check-ups a routine part of children, instead of waiting for illness. “These check-ups are essential not just for disease prevention but also for ensuring your child's overall well-being and peak performance in all areas of life,” he said.

Inside Jason Karp's decision to exit finance to get into healthy snacks

New Delhi, Youths should learn to balance hard work with a healthy diet, proper sleep and timely exercise, doctors said while cautioning that overwork is leading to early onset of lifestyle diseases. Some medical experts also said that a 70-hour-week regimen would be "far too ambitious," and urged team leaders at workplaces to divide work in an optimised manner among members and "not try to extract too much work from an individual", which often leads to physical or psychological burnout. Their comments come in the wake of Infosys co-founder <keyword id="6448574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="n-r-narayana-murthy" source="Orion">N R Narayana Murthy</keyword> recently suggesting that young people should work <keyword id="19286531" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="70-hours-a-week" source="Orion">70 hours a week</keyword> to boost the country's productivity. Murthy's remarks were criticised on social media for allegedly promoting an 'overwork culture' by some, and praised by several others. Doctors in Delhi warned that overwork was leading to early onset of lifestyle diseases like diabetes and cervical spondylitis. Smoking, drinking and consumption of junk food at work or home are also adversely affecting their health, and compounding their health issues, they said. Dr Suranjit Chatterjee, senior consultant, internal medicine at Apollo Hospital in Delhi said, "Hard work doesn't mean you neglect or compromise your health. Hard work is fine, but a person should take care of one's health too while following their ambition. "So, it has to be balanced with a healthy diet, healthy lifestyle, proper sleep and timely exercise," he told PTI. The 70-hour-week regimen would be "far too ambitious, I feel, and 60 hours per week with a balanced and optimised lifestyle" should be the way forward, the doctor said. "Many people work hard and then resort to eating junk food or smoking at regular intervals, of course, having this myth that it is helping them de-stress, but it's not, it's only making their health even worse," Chatterjee said. Some resort to regular drinking and frequent parties, driven at times by the idea that 'I can afford it, so I will do it'. This attitude has to change if a person has to grow professionally without compromising one's health, he cautioned. Doctors at other government and private hospitals also warned about the consumption of junk food, at times for "snob value" at the workplace, which in turn leads to a "wrong ripple effect". Recreation is important, but it should be done after putting in hard work on working days, for both personal and professional growth in any organisation, the medical experts underlined. A senior doctor at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said the OPD of internal medicine there is seeing a "paradigm shift" in the nature of patients visiting it. "We are seeing now more younger people than the elderly population who are coming to us with early onset of lifestyle diseases like diabetes. They are glued to their computer screens or mobile phones all the time, so they complain of pain in the eyes, neck pain, backache and many other issues," the doctor said. Consumption of junk food, lack of proper sleep, negligible or no exercise, coupled with the sedentary lifestyle at work, is making matters worse, he added. The senior doctor advised youths to balance ambition with a healthy diet and lifestyle, and not give in to any pressure from peers or otherwise. There have been many cases of physical or mental burnout and overwork is a major cause for that, he added. Ambition is good for work, good for the country, and a person can work for even 10 hours or so per day "while ensuring health is not compromised," Chatterjee said. In a conversation with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai in the inaugural episode of 3one4 Capital's podcast 'The Record,' Murthy had said that youngsters should put extra hours at work to compete with leading economies. "India's work productivity is one of the lowest in the world. Unless we improve our work productivity...we will not be able to compete with those countries that have made tremendous progress," he said, comparing India with China, Japan and Germany. "So, therefore, I request that our youngsters must say, 'This is my country. I'd like to work 70 hours a week," he added. Murthy's remarks have drawn mixed reactions on social media. Comedian and actor Vir Das wrote on X, "Life's hard. You meet a girl, fall in love, get married. Her dad wants you to work 70 hours a week. You can't work that hard, you just wanna chill and run England." Another user on X said "overwork" gave him stress and health complications. Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO, <keyword id="6362049" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ola-cabs" source="Orion">Ola Cabs</keyword>, also posted, saying, "Totally agree with Mr Murthy's views. It's not our moment to work less and entertain ourselves. Rather it's our moment to go all in and build in one generation what other countries have built over many generations!"

A 70-hour-week regimen 'far too ambitious' say medical experts

Many <keyword id="35450" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="insurance">insurance</keyword> companies are offering maternity covers as a part of their regular health policies these days. Earlier, maternity benefits were extended only as a part of employers’ corporate health insurance policies. 
 However, companies like ICICI Lombard, <keyword id="6395721" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Max-Bupa">Max Bupa</keyword> and <keyword id="6369255" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Apollo-Munich">Apollo Munich</keyword> have started offering this cover, with sub-limits ranging from Rs 15,000-50,000. However, these products are costly and have a long waiting period of up to six years. 
 
Does it make sense to buy them? “Individuals can buy maternity cover if their employer’s insurance doesn’t cover it. Even selfemployed people should consider buying it. However, they should evaluate whether the cost and waiting period, after which such a cover is available, are reasonable,” says Arvind Laddha, CEO, Vantage Insurance Brokers. 
 
What Does it Cover? 
 
Maternity cover takes care of expenses related to delivery (normal and caesarean section) or the lawful medical termination of pregnancy during the policy period. However, there could be conditions limiting the number of deliveries or terminations, either during the lifetime of the insured person or the policy period, says Antony Jacob, CEO of health insurer Apollo Munich. Pre and post-natal expenses per delivery or termination are also covered. 
 
Depending on the insurer and the product variant, WHO-approved vaccinations and medical treatment for the new born till 90 days or the next renewal will also be paid for. If your policy entitles you to daily cash hand-outs, you can use it to take care of your sundry expenses too. “If the insured person chooses the room type wisely, an additional sum as daily hospital cash can be used for other related expenses like medicines,” says Jacob. 
 
According to Max Bupa, a rise in maternity claims points to the relevance of the policy. “We have noted an almost 50% increase in claims related to maternity in the last year. 
 
Coverage for maternity-related expenses is gaining importance with increase in medical costs as well as maternal age and greater incidence of lifestyle diseases that may lead to complications at the time of pregnancy,” says Manasije Mishra, CEO, Max Bupa. 
 
Sanjay Datta, chief, underwriting and claims, ICICI Lombard General Insurance, also believes that the policy is worth its premium because “it not just takes care of the hospitalisation costs, but also the insured’s pre and post-natal expenses.” 
 
The company’s claim figures indicate a sharp increase in maternity claims in 2013. 
 
While delivery-related claims went up by 36.52% from 2012, claims paid out for treatment of complications in new born babies shot up by nearly 46%. 
 
Read the Fine Print 
 
“Generally, maternity covers are restricted to maximum 10% of the overall sum insured and the cover is available only in the third year of continuous coverage. Waiting periods extend to over two years. The insured should evaluate whether the premium is worth the benefit of taking this cover,” says Laddha. 
 
Prospective buyers should examine sub-limits, or ceiling, for maternity cover closely. Most insurers impose caps of Rs 15,000-25,000 for normal deliveries and Rs 30,000-Rs 50,000 for Caesarean section deliveries. 
 
Similarly, admissible preand post-natal expenses, too, could be limited to Rs 1,500-5,000. Waiting period — when maternity benefits are not paid — usually ranges from two to six years. “If the waiting period is low, there is a higher cost associated with the plan,” says Jacob. 
 
Policies that offer maternity covers are still costlier than regular ones. For example, under Max Bupa’s family floater product, the annual premium for a 30-year-old woman seeking a cover of Rs 5 lakh with maternity benefits will be Rs 14,816 (in a family of two adults). Without this component, it will be cheaper by around Rs 2,000-3,000. Similarly, in case of ICICI Lombard, the floater cover without maternity benefits will be cheaper by around Rs 7,000, while the difference is Rs 1,000 under Apollo Munich’s individual policy.

With Rising Costs, It May Pay To Buy A Separate Maternity Cover

This means Insta provides hospital management system or HMS to its clients, who are hospitals, clinics and <keyword id="7874987" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="healthcare-centers" source="Orion">healthcare centers</keyword>, via cloud computing. HMS helps hospitals manage their information like clinical data, inventory, patient information and financials, and integrate all of it across departments. Also, Insta’s own SaaS transition will render it with benefits and also the clients it serves. Insta says its new SaaS-powered system will enable the hospitals – its clients – to improve operational efficiency by 20-25% with minimal revenue leakage. “The India market is ripe for SaaS. It provides the much-needed agility that healthcare players are looking for, thus, giving us the confidence of further expansion in a shorter period of time,” said Abhinav <keyword id="3268" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="lal" source="Orion">Lal</keyword>, co-founder and chief technology officer, Practo. Scalability &amp; cost-efficiency The company has ambitious growth plans ahead – to grow the number of its clients by 25%. The SaaS model will provide it with scalability. The company said that the SaaS transition will also provide more value to its partner clinics and hospitals in addition to flexibility. More importantly, the new system will make it more cost-effective, and it can be passed on to its clients. “With this move, the company aims to improve its integration, enabling timely upgrades and greater ease of use, at four times reduction in costs as compared to conventional IT infrastructure,” Insta said in a statement. ‘Helps anticipate revenues &amp; shorten sales lifecycle’ Since it was acquired in 2015 by Practo, Insta grew its business by 368%. It has been clocking 25-30% revenue growth year-on-year, for the last two to three years. “While our consumer business continues to grow, our B2B business is turning profitable. This transition to SaaS is a strategic step in that direction. It helps us anticipate revenues, shorten sales lifecycle, and deepen integration, thus, creating a more predictable ecosystem for both growth and profitability,” said Lal. The global cloud computing market in healthcare is estimated to reach $51.9 billion by 2024. The company hopes to have a 10% share in this market, going ahead. “We are the leaders in the <keyword id="30350" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="middle-east" source="Orion">Middle East</keyword> market and will continue to invest in that market, to grow both market and revenue share,” Lal said. This has helped Apollo Hospitals develop a non-biased cardiac risk score for Indian population. Apollo Hospital’s senior consultant for interventional cardiology, Dr Shiv Kumar has said that this score is twice as accurate as the existing models. State Bank of India builds a frontline sales app

Myntra is also using Microsoft Power BI to allow its employees to act on real time feedback to provide a better customer experience. InMobi uses Azure to get a 360-degree view of customers

Royal Enfield uses Dynamics 365 to maintain service histories and job cards

Novartis India, Sterlite Power and Genpact have been using LinkedIn to improve learning, recruiting and marketing practices in the companies. Mindtree and Mahindra Group are using Microsoft Teams for communication and collaboration within the organisations.
