In today’s app-driven economy, APIs fuel innovation, faster time-to-market and help drive revenue for organisations. A vast majority of enterprises have adopted APIs with the goal of creating a competitive differentiator in the market. Emerging workplace scenarios and connected applications have further pushed the adoption of APIs. More than 96% of organisations are utilising APIs for communications between their workloads and systems, according to a recent study by Enterprise Management Associates (EMA), in association with Radware. However, its huge popularity is tied to high security concerns, which organisations tend to overlook. Many of the standard solutions deployed by organisations – XDR, API gateways and web app firewalls etc., – are considered effective in identifying attacks by almost 98% of the organisations. At the same time, over 7% of those surveyed indicate that there were no attacks to identify, while about 3% reported that the tools deployed were not able to adequately identify API attacks. “For many companies, there is unequivocally a false sense of security that they are adequately protected from cyberattacks. In reality, they have significant gaps in the protection around unknown and undocumented APIs,” said Gabi Malka, Radware’s chief operations officer and head of research and development. “API security is not a ‘trend’ that is going away. APIs are a fundamental component to most of the current technologies and securing them must be a priority for every organisation,” he added. Open source API security Many industries have witnessed an increasing adoption of open APIs in recent years. The general perception is that open-source technologies are inherently secure – for example, about 65% of the respondents in the EMA survey believe that open-source code is more secure and about 74% think that containers and microservices – which enable companies to design and deliver applications with speed – are secure by default. These factors add to the false sense of security. “The belief that open source is more secure by design could explain why some organisations are lax when it comes to patch management. Yet, as we have seen with Log4j and Heartbleed, open source can have the same security flaws as proprietary code. Believing that open source is inherently more secure by default only further contributes to the false narrative that leaves organisations vulnerable to cyber-attacks,” says Malka. Open-source APIs, microservices or containers thus offer no magic bullet for security. The survey findings accentuate why API protection must become a top priority for tech and security leaders, especially in a world where app experience determines the success of a brand. But organisations in general seem to be getting API security wrong, with many demonstrating the inability to protect the unknown, overconfidence in their existing security tools, and a lack of skilled resources. This is not the first time that Google has tried to stop call recording. With the Android 10 update, Google completely removed the call recording feature on its devices. Google claimed that this was done keeping in mind privacy and security. Another reason for this could be that call recording laws are different from country to country. After this, several third-party apps such as TrueCaller and ACR Phone started using the <keyword id="13665796" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="accessibility-api" source="Orion">Accessibility API</keyword> to record calls. However, Google has come down heavily on this and has announced that Accessibility API can no longer be used to record calls. “The Accessibility API is not designed and cannot be requested for remote call audio recording,” Google said on its <a href="https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/11899428#accessibility_preview">support page</a>. “The use of the Accessibility API must be documented in the Google Play listing,” Google added. New Delhi, Mar 13 () The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has been assured by pharma industry body IDMA that there is no shortage of active pharmaceutical ingredients and formulations in the country due to coronavirus outbreak, Rajya Sabha was informed on Friday. "NPPA has informed that they have not received any reference regarding shortage of active pharmaceutical ingredients. The Indian Drug Manufacturers Association (IDMA) has assured that its members have enough stocks of APIs and formulations," Minister for Chemicals &amp; Fertilizers DV Sadananda Gowda said in a reply. NPPA has also informed that it has not received any reference from pharma associations regarding steep increase in price of medicines due to outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in China, he added. "NPPA is monitoring the situation regularly to ensure that ceiling prices of essential medicines are not breached," Gowda said. Moreover, the Department of Pharmaceuticals has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Eshwara Reddy, Joint Drugs Controller, Central Drugs Standard Control Organization to address the issue of drug security in the country in the context of novel coronavirus outbreak in China, he added. "Based on the recommendations of the committee, the department has issued necessary instructions to NPPA and Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to ensure adequate supply of APIs and formulations at affordable prices in the market and to prevent black-marketing, illegal hoarding, creating artificial shortages in the country," Gowda said. The policies formulated by the government from time to time are designed to minimize country's dependence on imports and to give fillip to indigenous manufacturing, he added. "In this direction, the Department of Pharmaceuticals has formulated a scheme namely 'Assistance to Bulk Drug Industry for Common Facility Centre' for providing assistance to bulk drug industry for common facility centre in any upcoming bulk drug park promoted by state governments/state corporations," Gowda said. Instagram is working to open up messaging to third parties

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Developer startup <keyword id="9262143" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="rapidapi">RapidAPI</keyword> announced a $25 million funding round on Thursday led by Andreessen Horowitz, DNS Capital, Green Bay Ventures, M12 (Microsoft's Venture Fund), and Grove. </li><li>The company has seen a faster rate of signups during the coronavirus pandemic because of more people working remotely, RapidAPI founder and CEO Iddo Gino told Business Insider. </li><li>The company will invest the new funding in its product and online marketplace, as it tries to work with larger companies.</li></ul>The developer startup RapidAPI just closed a new round of funding amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic even though it had plenty of money left in the bank.It's platform allows developers to easily find, share, and use application programming interfaces (APIs) they need when building apps. APIs essentially allow products to access features or data from another app, like how Uber and Lyft use Twilio's APIs to allow drivers make calls and send texts, while Spotify and Tinder use Facebook APIs for logging in.On Thursday, RapidAPI announced a $25 million Series B funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, DNS Capital, Green Bay Ventures, M12 (Microsoft's Venture Fund), and Grove, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rapidapi-m12-microsoft-andreessen-horowitz-25-million-2019-6">bringing its grand total to $62.5 million in funding.</a> While RapidAPI declined to share its current valuation, it said that its Series B was not a "down-round," meaning that its valuation is now higher than it was after its last fundraise ($80 million). <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/andreessen-horowitz-a16z-invests-in-rapidapi-2016-11">RapidAPI</a> plans to invest its new funding in engineering and growing its online marketplace, which now has over 20,000 APIs used by over 300,000 developers. It's also focusing on working with larger companies. While RapidAPI still had most of its money from its last funding round in June 2019, founder and CEO Iddo Gino said the company decided to raise more money to speed up the its growth. It also wanted to take advantage of interest at a time when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vc-investors-say-funding-deals-could-fall-apart-2020-4">investors are generally feeling cautious</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-companies-covid19-layoffs-furloughs-benefits-2020-5">other startups are cash-strapped.</a>"There was some uncertainty we saw around where we were going with the virus," Gino told Business Insider. "Given the opportunity to raise, we figured it was the right thing to do."While the process had its difficulties, since Gino couldn't meet investors in person, it took less than two weeks from start to finish, he said. <h2>The coronavirus crisis seems to be driving growth for RapidAPI </h2>While many companies have taken a hit during the coronavirus crisis, RapidAPI saw a faster rate of new signups in March and April that it did in the earlier part of the year, Gino said. He believes that that's because many engineering teams are pushing out new software more quickly now that they've moved to remote work. Also, RapidAPI targets customers in industries like financial services, insurance, and e-commerce, which haven't been as impacted by pandemic. The company has had 30,000 paid subscribers sign up this year, and its product RapidAPI for Teams, which helps teams share and collaborate on APIs, is now used by more than 18,000 teams, with more than 1,000 new ones created every week.Still, the company isn't resting on its laurels and Gino knows that the coronavirus-related uncertainty is real. "The first quarter of the year for us was really strong and we are able to go above the initial projections we have," Gino said. "But I think for now, things are a bit influx to understand how this will evolve. New Delhi, Mar 3 () The central government on Tuesday asked National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) and state governments to ensure adequate supply of APIs and formulations at affordable prices in the market. It also issued instructions to NPPA, DCGI and state governments to prevent black marketing, illegal hoarding, artificial shortages of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and formulations in the country. NPPA has also written to chief secretaries of states with copies to principal secretaries (health) and state drug controllers urging them to closely monitor the production and availability of APIs and formulations to prevent the black marketing and hoarding in their states or UTs, the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) said in a statement. The pharma pricing regulator has also asked states to ensure that there is no violation of provisions of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, with regard to compliance of ceiling prices/ permissible increase in prices of scheduled/ non-scheduled formulations respectively, it added. DoP had earlier constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Eswara Reddy, joint drugs controller at CDSCO, to address the issues of drug security in the country amid the coronavirus outbreak in China, the statement said. The committee, in its report, has mentioned that the current stock-in-hand of the APIs may be sufficient for 2-3 months to make formulations. It also said there is no need to panic as far as drug security is concerned. "As per the latest available information, most of the Chinese companies manufacturing pharmaceutical ingredients (excluding those in Hubei province) have now resumed operations partially and expected to resume fully by end of March. There are no restrictions on the export of APIs from China," the statement said. The Chinese companies are willing to export to India, however, the logistics sector has not yet resumed operations fully, it added. The government on Tuesday restricted exports of 26 pharma ingredients and medicines, including paracetamol, vitamin B1 and B12, amid the coronavirus outbreak in China. AKT HRS

Centre asks regulators, state govts to ensure supply of APIs, drugs at affordable prices

<ul><li>Several vulnerabilities were discovered in <keyword id="6369515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mediatek" source="Orion">MediaTek</keyword> chipsets.</li><li>These vulnerabilities could allow hackers to listen to users’ conversations and hide malicious codes.</li><li>While some issues were resolved last month, MediaTek plans to resolve them all by December and publish it in their Security Bulletin. </li></ul>Some security lapses have been identified in MediaTek’s chips, used in about <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/796887/smartphone-system-on-chip-market-share-by-vendor-worldwide/">37% of Android smartphones</a> globally, that could allow hackers to spy on Android users and hide malicious codes. According to the report published by <a href="https://research.checkpoint.com/2021/looking-for-vulnerabilities-in-mediatek-audio-dsp/">Check Point Research</a>, there are several vulnerabilities in the MediaTek chip’s audio processor that are accessible from the Android userspace. If these are left unpatched, hackers would be able to spy on Android users and hear their conversations while also being able to hide malicious codes. These vulnerabilities were addressed by MediaTek, as Tiger Hsu, its Product Security Officer, claimed that there was no evidence of exploitation via these vulnerabilities. However, he said that users are encouraged to update their devices to the latest security patch and install applications only from trusted sources such as Google Play Store. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Vulnerabilities Identified" comment="Subhead" text="Vulnerabilities Identified">Vulnerabilities Identified</cmsannotation> MediaTek chipsets are used by many smartphone brands, including Xiaomi, OPPO, Realme, and Vivo. Check Point Research has shared the vulnerabilities with MediaTek and Xiaomi and have identified them. According to a report in <a href="https://techlapse.com/news/security-flaw-in-the-mediatek-chips-allows-spying-on-android-users/">TechLapse</a>, the issues identified as CVE-2021-0661, CVE-2021-0662 and CVE-2021-0663 have been resolved and published by MediaTek in its security bulletin for 2021. While the vulnerability CVE-2021-0673 was fixed last month, it will be published in the December 2021 Security Bulletin. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="How can the vulnerability be exploited?" comment="subhead" text="How can the vulnerability be exploited?">How can the vulnerability be exploited?</cmsannotation> A hacker can exploit the vulnerability when you download a malicious app and run it. The app then attacks a library using MediaTek API with permission to speak to the audio driver. The app can then send messages to the audio driver and run the code in the audio processor firmware. This gives it access over the audio stream.
