"We think this is a positive change and one that can help ensure small open source communities aren't acting as free and unsustainable R&amp;D for tech giants that put sustaining resources only into their own differentiated proprietary offerings," <a href="https://www.confluent.io/blog/license-changes-confluent-platform">Kreps writes in a blog post.</a>The post does not say that Amazon's announcement sparked this change, and the new license doesn't appear to directly impact AWS: Confluent's new license only applies to the specialized additions to Kafka that it developed in-house, while Amazon is using the original Kafka software. Amazon doesn't exactly have a strong reputation when it comes to giving back code to open source projects, although it signaled a change may be in order after AWS made a major open source contribution with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-web-services-firecracker-open-source-2018-11">a new project</a> called Firecracker. Altogether, these dynamics add up to a sometimes-strained relationship between Amazon and the open source community. But last week, at its annual Re:invent conference, Amazon's cloud announced a new project that could signal something of a shift in attitudes, as it launched a service called Firecracker. It's open source and available on the popular GitHub service, meaning would-be contributors can download, modify or use the code however they want.To be sure, AWS does contribute to major open source projects like Linux and Kubernetes, and it has many of its own on GitHub. Still, many developers feel that Amazon doesn't give back enough. In fact, in 2017, <a href="https://medium.freecodecamp.org/the-top-contributors-to-github-2017-be98ab854e87">Amazon only had</a> 134 active employees on GitHub pushing code to only 158 top projects, compared to Microsoft and Google, which have hundreds more employees contributing to hundreds more of the top projects.And Amazon has been reluctant to adopt major open source projects like Kubernetes, a mega-popular developer technology born out of Google. In late 2017, Amazon <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/r-amazon-adopts-open-cloud-technology-as-competition-heats-up-2017-11">finally jumped on the Kubernetes bandwagon</a> - many months after companies like Microsoft, Oracle, and IBM had already embraced it themselves. With Firecracker, though, Amazon Web Services could be extending something of an olive branch to the open source world, as it takes technology developed for its own use and turns it into what could be its biggest cloud-computing open source project to date. A spokesperson for the company tells Business Insider to look out for Amazon starting more of its own open source projects and contributing to more projects, too."Amazon hasn't been known for contributing a ton of open source. Now, here's capable technologies built in-house, and they're making it available," Dan Kohn, executive director of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation industry group, told Business Insider. "Things like Firecracker are great indications of Amazon investing in open source."<h2>What Firecracker does</h2>In a nutshell, AWS Firecracker, allows developers to securely launch micro virtual machines (microVMs), a software program that behaves like a completely separate computer. These microVMs can load in a fraction of a second, compared to traditional VMs that can take much longer to load and consume more memory. Users can even run thousands of microVMs at once on the same machine (or machines), letting them run huge apps at large scales. "We don't want our customers to make hard decisions between security and functionality," Holly Mesrobian, Director of Engineering at AWS Lambda, said on stage at Amazon Web Service's annual conference on Thursday.Amazon Web Services developed Firecracker internally to increase the speed and efficiency of its other services. With Firecracker, a microVM can be launched in as little as 125 microseconds, and Amazon plans to speed it up next year. Firecracker already runs on Intel processors, and there will be support for AMD and ARM chips starting in 2019.To run these microVMs, Firecracker uses the Linux Kernel Virtual Machine, or a virtual machine built on Linux, a popular open source operating system and the biggest rival to Microsoft Windows in the data center.<h2>A good start, but tensions are still high</h2>The general response of the open source community seems to be that the release of Firecracker is a good start, but that there are still reasons to be wary of Amazon.Recently, software company Redis Labs announced it would adopt a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mongodb-and-redis-labs-have-a-new-plan-to-take-on-amazon-2018-10">new licensing clause</a> that would curtail <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mongodb-and-redis-labs-have-a-new-plan-to-take-on-amazon-2018-10">major cloud providers</a> from making money off of its open source projects - a measure taken largely in response to AWS taking the Redis database software and packaging it up as a paid service. "[It's] good to see Firecracker being open sourced. A good move, although other open source projects continue to be poached on," Manish Gupta, chief marketing officer of Redis Labs, told Business Insider.To Gupta's point, Amazon announced at Re:invent that it would take the Kafka open source project and resell it to its customers as a paid service. "AWS entering the space is a win for Apache Kafka and represents the emerging consensus that Kafka is the de facto standard foundation for a company's streaming platform," Jay Kreps, a co-creator of Apache Kafka and CEO of Kafka-based startup Confluent, said in a statement. "The market is exploding. Everyone has an opportunity to do well. Amazon doesn't need to sever relationships with the competitors. In fact, Amazon has given more credibility to that industry."Likewise, <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/aws-developing-new-services-amid-open-source-tensions">The Information recently reported</a> that Amazon is developing a new cloud service based on the open source database MongoDB. MongoDB, the company that develops the namesake software, also recently announced <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mongodb-and-redis-labs-have-a-new-plan-to-take-on-amazon-2018-10">a new license</a> of its own for open source projects, although this was more directly in response to China-based cloud providers including Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu.While Amazon hasn't said anything about a MongoDB-based service, Eliot Horowitz, CTO and co-founder of MongoDB, believes that such a service could serve to demonstrate the excitement around open source. He says he's not too concerned about too much competition, as MongoDB and AWS have a strong partnership. Besides, he says, if AWS does sell such a product, it couldn't match the features or focus of MongoDB's own version."It's a testament on how much people like MongoDB. Who knows what will happen? Anything they offer would have to be significantly weaker," Horowitz said.<h2>The future of Amazon and open source</h2>Whether cloud providers selling other vendors' software hurts or helps them, AWS launching Firecracker is another sign this year of the major tech titans investing in open source. It follows <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/github-is-officially-part-of-microsoft-acquisition-closes-2018-10">Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub</a>, IBM <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ibm-red-hat-open-source-upset-2018-10">announcing it will acquire Red Hat</a>, and VMware announcing it would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-heptio-google-kubernetes-2018-11">acquire Heptio</a>, which works with Kubernetes.If Amazon is serious about continuing in open source, it's going to have to change its mindset to really thrive, say some in the open source community. "AWS definitely has an evolving relationship with open source," Joe Beda, founder and CTO of Heptio told Business Insider. "Building a business around open source is tricky. "If there are too many companies trying to making a living on top of one open-source project, they don't have scale," Peterson said in a recent interview with Business Insider. "If they weren't the originators of the project, they are usually just a team trying to exploit the popularity of the open-source projects."Peterson pointed to Apache Hadoop, which offers solutions for big data, as an example of an open-source package that had too many companies built on top of it, limiting their ability to grow. Kubernetes, an open-source package originally developed at Google for deploying applications, is an example of the latter. While companies have popped up based on it, the core engineers aren't involved, he said. For Peterson the interest isn't just about companies he'd like to incorporate into Nasdaq's technology. Nasdaq's head of tech highlights the two biggest reasons open source companies fail, and which ones might go public soon

 Founded in 2013, <keyword id="3681731" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tuplejump">Tuplejump</keyword>'s two co-founders <keyword id="909375" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rohit-Rai">Rohit Rai</keyword> and <keyword id="3680209" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="satyaprakash-buddhavarapu">Satyaprakash Buddhavarapu</keyword> have already joined <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> while third cofounder, Deepak Alur, joined Anaplan - a Cloud-based business modelling and planning platform for sales, operations and finance. 
 According to a Tech Crunch report, Apple is on a machine learning company buying spree and recently bought two well-known <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> Perceptio and Turi. 
 
"Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," a company spokesperson told Tech Crunch. 
 
Apple was particularly interested in "FiloDB" -- an opensource project that Tuplejump was building to efficiently apply machine learning concepts and analytics to complex data. 
 
The Tuplejump team was well acquainted with open source big data tools such as the Apache Spark processing engine, the Apache Cassandra NoSQL database, and the Apache Kafka distributed high-throughput publish-subscribe messaging system, Venturebeat reported. 
 
"Tuplejump also built an open source search indexing system called Stargate that works with data stored in Cassandra and relies on the fundamentals of the Apache Lucene full-text search software," the report added. 
 
Tuplejump's website has been shut down following the acquisition, the details of which are yet to be disclosed.

Why LinkedIn chooses really weird names for the software it gives away for free

For instance, since 2013, Amazon had been offering the open-source database Redis as part of a popular cloud service called ElastiCache.Still, some companies, like MongoDB and Redis Labs, are watching Amazon become the major benefactor of their work and feel they are not getting enough benefit in return. And they've come up with a controversial plan to change that.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mongodb-university-training-program-2018-7">MongoDB</a>, another open-source database company, felt the same about how foreign tech giants like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alibaba-chairman-jack-ma-ready-to-quit-following-bill-gates-playbook-2018-9">Alibaba</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tencents-earnings-profit-drops-for-the-first-time-in-nearly-13-years-2018-8">Tencent</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/baidu-artificial-intelligence-ai-services-2018-2">Baidu</a> sell its software as a cloud service. MongoDB has invested $300 million into research and development for its open-source software and if these giants want to make money on the free versions, its CEO feels they should, at the very least, contribute back in some major ways.While most open source licenses allow anyone to use the software for free, the users typically contribute back to the software project: fixing things, adding features, making the software better for everyone. "We see that more companies are testing the boundaries of open source," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mongodb-ceo-dev-ittycheria-ipo-2017-10">Dev Ittycheria</a>, CEO of MongoDB, told Business Insider. "They're taking the value of what was built. Rather than litigating this to the core, we believe it makes more sense to focus our resources on building great products for our companies."<h2>Strip mining</h2>Although those major cloud companies technically aren't breaking any laws, if they are all take and no give, they are breaking the social rules of open source. Companies like MongoDB and Redis can give away big portions of their software because what they get in return is free labor from the software users to make the software better. That helps them improve the commercial versions of their software, the ones they do charge money to use.There's a term in the open source community for what the cloud companies are being accused of doing: strip mining. "Their contribution to the open source is minuscule, not even in the 1 percent range."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/597a1232b50ab126008b4c50-911/gettyimages-813883316.jpg" border="0" alt="Jeff Bezos Amazon CEO" data-mce-source="Drew Angerer / Getty Images" />Drew Angerer / Getty ImagesAmazon CEO Jeff Bezos</div></div></div>Previously, both Redis and MongoDB were licensed under the <a href="https://www.gnu.org/licenses/agpl-3.0.en.html">Affero General Public License</a> (AGPL), a license that says any modifications made to the software must be released to the public. That means large companies can still make money from and run those open-source projects, but the license just makes it slightly more inconvenient for them to do so. And if those companies don't make any changes and simply sell the software, they're not violating anything. Those companies also aren't obligated to contribute to the projects beyond the social expectation that they do.But Ittycheria believes that they could easily contribute."They don't make enhancements that they've created available for the community while they've created a valuable franchise," Ittycheria said.<h2>Now they're introducing new licensing</h2>So both of these companies are trying to change their licensing to make cloud companies either pay up or roll up their sleeves and contribute to the work.Two months ago, Redis Labs added a new licensing option for Redis modules. It uses an existing free software license called Apache and adds a term known as the <a href="https://commonsclause.com/">Commons Clause,</a> which forbids users from selling the software."People traditionally had a lot of choices in the open source world: give everything away for free. People traditionally had a lot of choices in the proprietary world: give nothing away to the world," Kevin Wang, founder and CEO of FOSSA, which contributed the Commons Clause, told Business Insider. "Commons Clause is in the middle." And on Tuesday, MongoDB introduced a new software license called <a href="https://www.mongodb.com/licensing/server-side-public-license/faq">Server Side Public License</a> (SSPL). Under SSPL, users can still change and redistribute the software, but it explicitly states that if a person or a company wants to publicly offer MongoDB as a service, they must open source that service -- meaning they must make the code available to everyone for free. Otherwise, they must obtain a commercial license. In other words, if those major cloud companies want to sell MongoDB as a service, they have to freely share their code for the full components of that service, giving everyone, even their competitors, a look at their technology.This license will affect all versions of MongoDB's community server released after Tuesday. Right now, MongoDB is waiting for approval for its new license from an organization that handles open source licenses, the Open Source Initiative.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mongodb-cto-eliot-horowitz-interview-2018-8">Eliot Horowitz</a>, CTO and co-founder of MongoDB, believes this license will not affect the vast majority of MongoDB's users -- only the companies that are trying to sell MongoDB as a service."We want to continue investing heavily to build great products for our community," Horowitz said. But within the open-source world, it has ignited <a href="https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18229452">some tension</a>. Likewise, when Redis Labs announced it was adding the Commons Clause, this also sparked wars on <a href="https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17818647">open-source licensing</a>. This is because that while software that uses this clause may include code that's freely available, it no longer fully meets the definition of "open source." Even the <a href="https://commonsclause.com">Commons Clause website</a> says, "to avoid confusion, it is best not to call Commons Clause software 'open source.'"Some viewed the clause <a href="https://redmonk.com/sogrady/2018/09/10/tragedy-of-the-commons-clause/">as harmful</a>, arguing that if a project is offered as open-source, then it <a href="https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17816332">should stay</a> completely open-source - and adding restrictions goes against the very meaning of open-source. Some developers even counterattacked by <a href="https://www.zdnet.com/article/redis-labs-and-common-clause-attacked-where-it-hurts-with-open-source-code/">forking the code, </a>meaning they are taking the free stuff and making their own, independent versions of it, not beholden to the original developer like MongoDB or Redis.Ittycheria acknowledges that some of the legal aspects of open-source were not completely thought through before, but things have changed with the new cloud era. After all, Redis Labs and MongoDB are not the only companies impacted by large cloud companies. Other open-source projects, like Elasticsearch, Kafka, Docker, Hadoop and Spark have also been offered on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-its-like-to-work-at-amazon-web-services-2016-11">Amazon Web Services</a> (AWS)."The cloud provider is capturing all the value and giving little to nothing back to the community," Ittycheria said. "We think this is bad for the open source industry."Now, more open source projects are considering adding similar licenses. For example, Neo4j, a database platform, added the Commons Clause. And database management systems CockroachDB and MariaDB have used similar multi-choice licensing models."We expect more of that activity," Gupta said. "The biggest challenge is how do you protect your investment from being completely being poached by AWS or a vendor like them without them contributing back to the community? <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5bc90d8c98b249211b277168-1584/img0271-edit.jpg" border="0" alt="Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and incoming GitHub CEO Nat Friedman" data-mce-source="Microsoft" data-mce-caption="Incoming GitHub CEO Nat Friedman (left) and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella (right)">MicrosoftIncoming GitHub CEO Nat Friedman (left) and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella (right)</img></div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Microsoft's $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub just got EU approval, bringing the deal much closer to a final close.&#xa0;</li><li>Nat Friedman, who will become CEO of GitHub when the deal closes, says that the company will become a cornerstone of Microsoft's newfound leadership position in the world of open source software, where it's become a major player.&#xa0;</li><li>Under CEO Steve Ballmer, Microsoft earned a reputation as a "vocal adversary" to open source software and the Linux operating system, as Friedman acknowledges.</li><li>But Friedman says that Microsoft's embrace of open source comes down to a simple dynamic: Developers love open source, and Microsoft needs the love of developers.</li><li>And since developers love GitHub, too, Microsoft can't afford to do anything less than let it flourish as it is&#xa0;- or else lose that crucial trust.</li></ul>Nat Friedman thought he might lead a company again one day&#xa0;- "I really like being a CEO," he tells Business Insider&#xa0;- but didn't think it would happen exactly this way.&#xa0;In 2016, Friedman's first gig as CEO ended when his <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-acquires-xamarin-2016-2">startup Xamarin got snapped up by Microsoft</a>, where he stayed on as a Corporate VP in its developer tools division. Once <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-buys-github-for-2018-6">Microsoft's $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub closes later this year</a>, he'll get his second shot, as he steps up as CEO of the famed code-sharing site, replacing outgoing chief executive Chris Wanstrath.Now, his new job title got a lot closer, as <a href="http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-18-6155_en.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the European Union announced on Friday</a> that it will allow Microsoft's acquisition to proceed.&#xa0;Much like LinkedIn, which Microsoft bought for $26.2 billion in 2016, GitHub will operate as an autonomous subsidiary after the deal closes.&#xa0;And Friedman, for one, is stoked to begin his "dream job" at what he says "might be the most important company in the world."&#xa0;As the foremost destination where the world's programmers contribute their time and expertise to massive software projects, GitHub is at the center of the open source universe. Many of today's biggest advances, from smartphones to self-driving cars, are based on open source projects that at some point lived on GitHub; it's the melting pot of innovation.&#xa0;"We believe in the power of communities to achieve more together than what their members can do on their own, and that collaborative development through the open source process can accelerate innovation," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a statement to Business Insider about the deal.At the same time, Microsoft has a history as a long-time opponent to open source, a reputation that it's worked hard to shake under CEO Satya Nadella. But Friedman says that Microsoft hasn't just embraced open source - it's operating under a mandate, he says, "not only to participate, but to lead" in the community. It's one thing to talk the talk, but Friedman says that once the deal closes, Microsoft is excited to walk the walk, too.&#xa0;"You don't buy something, and pay what we did, if you don't appreciate it," Friedman says."When it comes to our commitment to open source, I want the world to judge us by the actions we've taken in the recent past, our actions today, and in the future," says Nadella. You can read his full statement below.<h2>Sympathy for the adversary</h2>Friedman acknowledges that Microsoft has a history as a "vocal adversary" of open source, a reputation he says he was more than familiar with during his time with Xamarin, a developer-focused startup.&#xa0;Under the reign of CEO Steve Ballmer, Microsoft launched an ambitious, aggressive plan to stamp out open source software in general, and the free Linux operating system - seen as a huge existential threat to the future of Windows - in particular. At the height of the feud, Ballmer went so far as to call Linux a "<a href="https://www.theregister.co.uk/2001/06/02/ballmer_linux_is_a_cancer/">cancer</a>."Ballmer and Bill Gates even recorded a bizarre parody of "The Matrix" sci-fi film, screened at an industry conference in 2003, where they took potshots at Linux, claiming it was too hard for non-technical people to use (which wasn't exactly wrong).You can watch that parody here:When Satya Nadella took over as CEO in 2014, he changed tactics: One of his first acts was to declare that "<a href="https://cloudblogs.microsoft.com/windowsserver/2015/05/06/microsoft-loves-linux/">Microsoft loves Linux."</a>Nowadays, <a href="https://www.zdnet.com/article/linux-now-dominates-azure/">Linux accounts for more than half of overall usage of the Microsoft Azure cloud</a>, while <a href="https://octoverse.github.com/">GitHub's own Octoverse report</a> - compiled before the Microsoft deal closed, it should be noted&#xa0;- shows that Microsoft is the number-one largest corporate contributor to open source software on the platform. Microsoft makes an open source code editor that even <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-linux-foundation-google-net-visual-studio-mac-2016-11">Google uses</a> to build Chrome, and there are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-sql-server-on-linux-2016-3">many other examples that its commitment to open source is not just lip service.</a>Oh, and Microsoft is&#xa0;<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-azure-sphere-is-powered-by-linux-2018-4">building its own version of Linux</a>."It's almost like 'night and day' might even be too easy a term," Scott Guthrie, the head of Microsoft's cloud and AI business, told Business Insider in an interview earlier this year. Friedman will continue reporting to Guthrie after the deal closes."I mean, it's been more than night and day in terms of where we've gone, from being overly hostile in many ways over a decade ago to, now we're we're probably the largest corporate contributor to open source in terms of number of developers, and in terms of some of the significant contributions."<h2>Skepticism abounds</h2>The free Linux operating system, once seen as the biggest threat to Microsoft Windows, now powers a tremendous chunk of the servers that power the internet. Google's Android operating system, too, is built on open source code. Facebook, Amazon, Google, and many other big platforms all make some use of open source. In other words, even if you're not actively programming in open source, you still use it in some capacity every time you open an app."Everyone in the world is part of this community, in some way," Friedman says. "Open source is solving more and more problems."&#xa0;Still, the very idea of Microsoft buying GitHub has been met with resistance from many corners of the open source community. While Microsoft has done its best to patch up relations with the open source community after years of friction, the damage still lingers&#xa0;- a whole generation of developers grew up believing that Microsoft is philosophically opposed to the very concept of open source.&#xa0;"When [Microsoft] started to push back on open source, they lost developers for a while," says Jeffrey Hammond, a principal analyst and VP with Forrester Research.&#xa0;<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5b89dc2a959f342d008b587e-2400/gettyimages-471527520.jpg" border="0" alt="Scott Guthrie Microsoft" data-mce-source="Stephen Lam/Getty Images">Stephen Lam/Getty ImagesMicrosoft Executive VP Scott Guthrie</img></div></div></div>Friedman says that the embracing of open source comes from a very practical place, however. The company's "steady slope" in adopting and embracing open source is a "customer-driven transformation." Demand for open source software is spiking, Friedman says, and so Microsoft has had to reconsider its entire approach."There's been a journey inside of Microsoft and outside of Microsoft," says Friedman.&#xa0;To put it another way, developers love open source. So if Microsoft wants developers to use the Microsoft Azure cloud, the SQL Server, and its other tools to build software, it needs to support open source.&#xa0;In fact, Hammond believes that there's a simple reason for even the most ardent skeptics not to doubt Microsoft's commitment to open source: If Microsoft doesn't embrace open source in its Azure cloud and beyond, developers will simply go to rivals like Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud.&#xa0;"Microsoft has always been very pragmatic," says Hammond. "If there's a thing they can do to increase revenue, they'll do it."&#xa0;<h2>What's next for GitHub</h2>Once the deal closes, GitHub will be the flagship example of Microsoft's commitment to open source, for better or for worse. Friedman says that the biggest challenge will be to make sure that Microsoft stays worthy of the responsibility of stewarding a service that's so crucial to programmers' daily lives."I think what we want is for GitHub to get better, with its own product philosophy," says Friedman.To that end, GitHub won't see any major changes: there are no immediate plans to revamp the site's stripped-down interface, which users credit for the service's speed and simplicity. Internally, Friedman isn't planning on any sweeping changes, either: Monalisa, <a href="http://cameronmcefee.com/work/the-octocat/">GitHub's beloved "octocat" mascot</a>, will survive the deal's closing intact.&#xa0;And despite some conspiracy theories, Microsoft has no plans to monetize GitHub through advertising, Friedman says. Just recently, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-github-amazon-google-cloud-2018-6">GitHub announced an integration with the Google Cloud platform</a>, which Friedman said Microsoft was "applauding from the sidelines." If GitHub is going to be good for developers, Friedman says, it can't play favorites.&#xa0;"Developers are extremely sensitive to any kind of favoritism that's unearned," says Friedman.&#xa0;And in the end, it's the developers who will judge Friedman's job.
