He found subtle, creative ways to express his Indian roots in his music instead. "It would either be a Bollywood sample or it would be Eastern strings, or it would be the Indian flute," he said.The world may not have been ready for Sean to sing in Punjabi, but it was ready to make him a star. By the mid-2000s, he'd become the first South Asian artist to top the Billboard Hot 100, the first South Asian artist to perform on "Top of the Pops," and the first British Asian artist to have simultaneous Top 10 Billboard singles in the US.It would take a bit longer for Punjabi music to find its groove in the West. The West perceived South Asians as one-dimensional when in reality, we encompass a large geographic region that includes India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Afghanistan."For the longest time, I used to say if you were from another planet, you wouldn't think there's any Indians walking around anywhere," Sean said. "It was very hard to name even two or three South Asian artists in the mainstream music industry."Now, this demographic has grown so much that it will be hard for the music industry to ignore. A 2023 report from <a target="_blank" href="https://luminatedata.com/reports/yearend-music-industry-report/">Luminate</a> shows that India alone saw the biggest year-over-year increase in total annual on-demand music streams of any nation last year. Its 2023 total streams were up by nearly half a trillion plays (+463.7 billion) from 2022. Apple reveals top songs of the year—here’s how you can check your 2022 Replay on Apple Music

<ul><li>The audio OTT industry has 8 million active subscribers, but only around 5% of them are paid subscribers. </li><li>Vernacular music now accounts for 34% of all streams with Punjabi songs heading the pack. </li><li>Spotify is the OTTA market leader capturing over a quarter of all streams in FY23. </li></ul>Indians have streamed a million songs or audio files every three minutes on OTT (over-the-top) platforms in FY23. Not only did the OTT audio market grow by 1.6 times from FY20, the pandemic years also added new users, as per a report by Redseer. “The Covid pandemic witnessed during FY21 and FY22, accelerated the growth of OTTA, adding more than 50 million music listeners, not only from the young age group but also among the people with more than 40 years of age,” said Ujjwal Chaudhry, partner at Redseer Strategy Consultants. The audio OTT industry has around 8 million active subscribers. However, only around 5% of the monthly active users are paid subscribers. The rest rely on ad supported versions to stream their audio files online. “Most of the subscriptions purchased by users have been for three-month packs, followed by one month. As the diversity of packs grew with one-day, one-month and student packs, subscribers have continued to grow,” Redseer report said. The average revenue per user has been around ₹60-70 a month. However, the share of subscription revenue has grown from 37% in FY20 to 48% in FY23, Redseer says. Also, most of the new paid subscribers are coming from top 10-12 cities. Natu, natu plus Punjabi pop Thanks to digital maturity growth in smaller cities and more regional label partnerships, vernacular streams have shown the fastest growth in three years. Vernacular music now accounts for 34% of all streams. “Within vernacular, the South Indian market has witnessed a surge in both user base and engagement in the last 2 years attributed to the growing number of blockbuster movie releases and high growth in players like Spotify,” the report said. Punjabi however remains the lead contributor in the vernacular with a 39% share. It is also the largest contributor to OTT audio in terms of non-film genre music or pop songs. In the last four years, songs of artists like AP Dhillon, and Diljit Dosanjh, have been played not just in the north, but across all states. Spotify, the market leader The Indian market is flush with audio OTT apps like Gaana, Jio Saavn, Resso, Wynk, YouTube Music, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. But Spotify occupies the top spot, capturing 26% of all streams in FY23. The report also says that the Swedish Spotify played a crucial role in bringing first-time OTTA users between the ages of 15-30 years. “One of the key strategies that have enabled Spotify to expand its user base is its focus on penetration in Hindi and vernacular languages, beyond just international music. In fact, the platform boasts one of the largest music libraries of Hindi and vernacular content,” Redseer says. It also concentrated on its brand positioning by associating with celebrities like Anil Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. It was the first to introduce a dark interface, and has an ease of app navigation, which ensured highest retention rates – and an edge over the competition. Eye makeup sales have gotten a boost. And the beauty industry across the board is seeing a newfound interest in colorful, vibrant cosmetics. The surges are colliding with makeup trends circulating on TikTok, leading to a much-needed boost for an industry hit hard by the pandemic. Market research firm NPD Group reported this month that blush sales are up 39% in the US in 2021. Sales of cream and stick blush specifically have more than doubled since 2020 and have grown since 2019 as well.Natallia Bambiza, a makeup category analyst for beauty at NPD Group, <a href="https://www.npd.com/news/blog/2021/makeup-gets-more-creative/">said in a blog post</a> that the newfound popularity of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/story/why-did-we-start-wearing-makeup">one of the world's earliest forms of makeup</a> can be attributed to a technique circulating on TikTok called "underpainting." Underpainting involves first putting on cream blush and then layering foundation and concealer on top of it, which is the opposite way most people typically do their makeup. The method is an old trick used by makeup artists to provide "a much more natural effect," makeup artist Jamie Greenberg told <a href="https://www.allure.com/story/underpainting-makeup-contouring-technique">Allure's Erica La Sala</a>, but it also requires a lot of product — hence the exploding sales. Like many other industries, the cosmetics world had a challenging 2020. NPD Group data showed that sales of high-end makeup in particular dropped 34% in 2020, with certain categories getting hit harder than others.Sales of lip products like lipstick and gloss plummeted as masks became the norm and continued to drop in early 2021 — total sales of lip products were down 24% in the first quarter of the year, according to NPD Group data, although when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lifted mask recommendations in May, <a style="font-size: 15px;" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lipstick-sales-increase-expected-after-cdc-lifts-mask-mandate-2021-5">the category got a boost</a>. But the cosmetics industry, like the rest of us during the pandemic, has adapted. Lipstick may be difficult to wear under masks, but eye makeup is fair game. Data analytics firm Kantar found that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/eye-makeup-sales-rise-lipstick-dips-due-to-mask-wearing-2020-8">sales of eye makeup surged 204% year-over-year</a> from April to June 2020, a trend that has continued in 2021: Online sales of eye makeup are up 47% this year compared to 2019, according to 1010data cited by <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/09/style/post-lockdown-makeup-looks.html">The New York Times' Rachel Strugatz</a>. In fact, cosmetics sales have been increasing across the board this year as beauty enthusiasts reach for more vibrant and colorful makeup to combat months of grim headlines and isolation due to the pandemic. Online makeup sales have jumped 29% in 2021 compared to 2019, according to 1010data cited by The Times. Makeup companies like e.l.f. and Mac reported seeing renewed interest in colorful, bold, or shimmery makeup, especially among Gen Z, and <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2018/11/29/18106728/no-makeup-natural-paradox-branding">the end of the "no makeup makeup" look</a> that's been popular since as far back as the early 1990s.Bambiza from NPD Group attributes these trends to the increased time all of us spend on social media. The newfound desire to experiment, either with colors or techniques, is an "unexpected result of COVID-19," she wrote."While the pandemic had a negative effect on makeup usage in terms of frequency and the number of products used," she wrote, "it contributed to the emergence of new (or old but forgotten) tricks and hacks that aroused makeup trends."
