New Delhi, Feb 3 () The government will protect the interest of policyholders of LIC, which is likely to go public in the next financial year, Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur has said.
Listing of LIC will help bring in greater transparency, public participation and also deepen the equity market, he said.
"Government came out with the idea (LIC listing). The details will follow and it will be in the interest of LIC and its policyholders. Interest of LIC and policyholders will be safeguarded," he told in an interview.
Asked about quantum of stake sale, he said, once the amendment to the LIC Act is finalised you will get all the details.
"LIC have an independent set-up to decide where they want to invest even today and what will continue in the next format that would come into light as well in the future," he said.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the Budget 2020-21 on Saturday proposed to sell a part of government stake in LIC through an initial public offer next fiscal.
The government aims to garner Rs 90,000 crore from the listing of LIC and stake dilution in IDBI Bank in the next fiscal out of total disinvestment target of Rs 2.10 lakh crore.
The government currently owns 100 per cent in LIC, while it holds around 46.5 per cent stake in IDBI Bank.
Assuring that the numbers presented in the Budget as realistic, Thakur said several measures announced in the Budget will help boost economy and meet nominal GDP growth target of 10 per cent set in the Budget.
"Just three four months back the government announced corporate tax rate cut. It takes some time to implement that at the grassroot level. So, you will see impact of that in some time. That is why we have not said 7.5 per cent, we have said 6.5 per cent (growth). And that is a real and genuine numbers we are looking at," he said.
Besides, he said, the revenue and expenditure target for the next fiscal are very much achievable.
The Budget has pegged total receipts at Rs 22.46 lakh crore and expenditure at Rs 30.42 lakh crore 2020-21 keeping in mind government's commitment towards various schemes and need for improvement in quality of life of the people.
Terming this year's Budget as 'Jan Jan Ka Budget', Thakur said, every strata of the society has been taken well into consideration and major reforms have been undertaken benefiting youth, women, farmers, investors and middle class.
The government has provided Rs 2.83 lakh crore for agriculture, farmer welfare and rural development.
"Doubling farmers' income is an agenda for the next two years. We have already fulfilled the commitment of one and a half times of cost of production of farmers which government had promised," he said.
With the announcement of 'Kisan Rail' and 'Krishi Udaan' to be launched by Indian Railways and Ministry of Civil Aviation, respectively, for a seamless national cold supply chain for perishables, this too will serve beneficial as it will aid farmers in facilitating smooth and fast transport of perishable goods, he said.
In addition, the government has increased agriculture credit target to Rs 15 lakh crore for the next fiscal.
Thakur said, "from the startups to education, internship to apprenticeship many announcements have been done...So, I think more young entrepreneurs, more startups we are going to see...We see India moving to top three startup countries in the world in the next couple of years".
With regard to helping the MSME sector, he said, the government has asked the RBI to consider extending debt restructuring window by another year till March 31, 2021.
More than five lakh MSMEs have benefitted from restructuring of debt permitted by the Reserve Bank of India in the last year, he said. DP BAL

Most exit polls are giving all four seats in the state to BJP and none to Congress. Today’s Chanakya also predicted that Congress may fail to win even one seat in Himachal Pradesh and BJP will bag all the four seats. Himachal witnessed a direct contest between BJP and Congress. Himachal Pradesh has four Lok Sabha seats namely Kangra, Mandi, Hamirpur and Shimla. IN 2014 general elections, the BJP won a thumping victory from this state and bagged all the four seats. The sitting MPs of the party who won during 2014 elections from Himachal Pradesh are Shanta Kumar (Kangra), Ram Swaroop Sharma (Mandi), Anurag Singh Thakur (Hamirpur), and Virendra Kashyap (Shimla). The party is now fielding two of its sitting MPs namely Ramswaroop Sharma and Anurag Thakur from their winning constituencies. Shantakumar in Kangra and Suresh Kashyap in Shimla have been replaced by Kishan Kapoor and Suresh Kashyap respectively. The Congress party is now fielding Ram Lal Thakur from Hamirpur, Pawan Kajal from Kangra, Ashrey Sharma from Mandi and Dhani Ram Shandil from Shimla. For so long, the Mandi constituency had been a stronghold for the Congress party. Out of the 15 Lok Sabha elections held so far in the country, Congress won this seat 11 times. This constituency has 17 assembly seats and the BJP has 14 seats under its umbrella now. During the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign in Himachal Pradesh, the key leader of the party Dumal was seen vigorously campaigning for bagging favorable results for the BJP from Hamirpur and Shantakumar from Kangra.

Himachal Pradesh Candidate list for 2019 Lok Sabha Election

Mohali (Punjab) [India], August 28 (ANI): Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur heaped praise on India's javelin ace <keyword id="1115774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Neeraj-Chopra" source="Orion">Neeraj Chopra</keyword> who clinched India's first <keyword id="28217" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-medal" source="Orion">gold medal</keyword> at the <keyword id="124430" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-athletics-championships" source="Orion">World Athletics Championships</keyword>. Neeraj recorded his best throw of 88.17 m in his second attempt in the Championship final and managed to keep his lead intact till the very end. Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, the Commonwealth Games champion finished with silver with a throw of 87.82 m. Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch secured bronze with a best throw of 86.67 m. "Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra for winning gold at the World Athletics Championship 2023. The Golden Boy of athletics has done it again. Not only in the World Athletics Championship, Neeraj Chopra has won gold in several other Championships also. This is a big achievement for India in the field of Athletics. I am also pleased about the fact that not only Neeraj, but in the final six three Indian athletes made their place, Kishore Jenna and Manu DP performed well," Anurag Thakur said while speaking to ANI. The other two Indian athletes in the mix were <keyword id="4904763" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kishore-jena" source="Orion">Kishore Jena</keyword> (best of 84.77 m), who finished fifth while DP Manu (best of 84.14 m) finished sixth. "The environment of sports in India has changed over the last few years. The Prime Minister also increased the sports budget by 3 times, he gave the go-ahead for the TOP scheme and also green lighted the Khelo India games. This has ethused the athletes and this has shown in their performance also" said the minister. With Chopra's success, India now has medals of all colours at the World Championships. This was Neeraj's second medal at the World Championships after he secured a silver last year. India's last medalist at the prestigious world event was Anju Bobby George back in the 2003 World Championships when she clinched bronze in the women's long jump. In the first round of attempts, Finland's <keyword id="14198716" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="oliver-helander" source="Orion">Oliver Helander</keyword> took the lead with a throw of 83.38 m. Neeraj Chopra's first throw was a foul, giving him a start that he did not want. The first throws of Kishore Jena and DP Manu were 75.70 m and 78.44 respectively. But it was not enough to give them a top-three spot. At the end of the first round of attempts, Helander led the field. In the second round of attempts, Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch took the lead with a throw of 84.18 m. However, Neeraj overcame the nerves of a bad start, outdoing Jakub with a monstrous 88.17 m throw to take the lead. Manu's second attempt was a foul. Jena's second throw was a solid 82.82 m and took him to the fifth spot. Neeraj led with a massive 88.17 m after the second round of attempts. The third round of attempts started and Neeraj recorded a throw of 86.32 m, the second-best in the competition so far. He managed to maintain his lead. However, with a massive throw of 87.82 m, Pakistan's Commonwealth Games champion Arshad Nadeem jumped to the number two spot. He recorded his season-best throw and less than a meter separated him from the Olympic champion Neeraj. With a third attempt of 83.72 m, Manu was still in fifth. Jena's third attempt was a foul and he remained at seventh spot. Neeraj led with 88.17 at the end of round three of attempts. Jena's fourth attempt was 80.19 m and kept him at the seventh spot at the start of fourth round of attempts. Manu's fourth attempt was a foul, keeping him at the fifth spot. Neeraj recorded the fourth throw of 84.64 m, still in the lead. However, Nadeem was still pretty close to him, throwing 87.15 m in the fourth attempt and having the second-best throw overall from earlier. Neeraj led the field at the end of the fourth round of attempts. Jena's fifth attempt was 84.77 m, taking him to fourth spot, one away from a bronze. Nadeem's fifth throw was a foul, delivering a blow to his hopes of a first spot. Neeraj's fifth throw was 87.73 m and kept him in the lead. However, it was just inches away from Nadeem's second-best throw of 87.82 m from earlier. Manu recorded 83.48 m and Jena recorded 84.77 in their fifth attempts. Jena was fifth while Manu at sixth. Neeraj still led the field. In the final round of attempts, Manu was still at sixth with an 84.14 m throw in the final attempt. Jena committed a foul and stayed at fifth. Nadeem's final throw was 81.86 m and failed to overcome Neeraj's 88.17 m in his final attempt. In this way, Nadeem settled for a silver and Neeraj made history with India's first-ever World Championships gold. (ANI)

BCCI gears up for 2016 ICC World T20, forms organising committee

World champion woman boxer and <keyword id="11932" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="olympic" source="Orion">Olympic</keyword> bronze medallist MC Mary Kom will head the government-appointed five-member <keyword id="199113" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="oversight-committee" source="Orion">Oversight Committee</keyword> for the Wrestling Federation of India (<keyword id="6437897" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="wfi" source="Orion">WFI</keyword>) which will have Olympic bronze medallist grappler <keyword id="157783" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="yogeshwar-dutt" source="Orion">Yogeshwar Dutt</keyword> and former India badminton star Trupti Murgunde as key members. Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Anurag Thakur on Monday announced the composition of the Oversight Committee which will also include the former CEO of Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) Capt Rajagopalan and former SAI Executive Director (Teams) Radhika Sreeman. Murgunde is a member of the government's Mission Olympic Cell member. "As I had earlier announced, the Oversight Committee will not only handle the day-to-day functioning of the WFI but also inquire into the serious allegations made by the wrestlers and submit a report," Sports Minister Anurag Thakur told the media on Monday. Thakur had on Saturday announced the formation of the Oversight Committee to handle the day-to-day activities of the WFI after a group of wrestlers led by Olympians Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, Ravi Dhaiya and Deepak Punia sat on a protest at the Jantar Mantar here alleging many irregularities by WFI including mismanagement of governance and sexual harassment of women grapplers by coaches and the WFI president. At the same time, the government also suspended WFI assistant secretary <keyword id="2210825" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vinod-tomar" source="Orion">Vinod Tomar</keyword>. On Monday, Thakur informed that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been asked to cease functioning as WFI president till the inquiry by the Oversight Committee is completed and has been told not to interfere in the day-to-day functioning of the WFI. The Indian wrestlers had called off their protest late on Friday evening after a second meeting at Thakur's residence in the national capital. The meeting lasted beyond midnight, following which wrestler Bajrang Punia announced to the media that the other wrestlers are calling off the protest after assurance of action from Thakur against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The wrestlers have been staging a protest since Wednesday, accusing WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment of women wrestlers, sponsorship fund embezzlement, and athletes' mismanagement. New Delhi, The government on Wednesday announced hiking the <keyword id="20069652" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sugarcane" source="keywords">sugarcane</keyword> <keyword id="20544473" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="frp" source="keywords">FRP</keyword> by Rs 25 to Rs 340 per quintal for the 2024-25 season starting October. Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) is the minimum price that mills have to pay to sugarcane growers. The decision to increase the FRP of sugarcane was taken at the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword>. The Rs 25 per quintal hike is the highest by the Modi government and the move comes ahead of the general elections. Sugarcane is grown mainly in Maharashtra, <keyword id="19894922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="keywords">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>, and Karnataka. "Keeping in view interest of sugarcane farmers (GannaKisan), the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for sugar season 2024-25 (October - September) at Rs 340 per quintal for a basic recovery rate of 10.25 per cent," I&amp;B Minister <keyword id="19895497" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="anurag-thakur" source="keywords">Anurag Thakur</keyword> said at a media briefing. The FRP has been determined on the basis of recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) and after consultation with state governments and other stakeholders.

Cabinet approves hike in sugarcane FRP by ₹25 to ₹340 per quintal for 2024-25 season

The Cabinet on Thursday approved Rs 12,000 crore for the second phase of the <keyword id="1869019" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-energy-corridor" source="Orion">Green Energy Corridor</keyword> to facilitate grid integration and power evacuation of about 20 GW of renewable energy projects in seven states. The scheme targets to add approximately 10,750 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and about 27,500 mega volt-amperes transformation capacity of sub-stations. Announcing the decision, Union Minister Anurag Thakur said the second phase will be implemented during 2021-22 to 2025-26 fiscal years. He said central assistance is 33 per cent of the total investment. The minister added that 80 per cent of the phase one work has been completed. The outlay of the first phase was Rs 10,142 crore.
