According to <a href="https://www.natlawreview.com/article/heads-crown-act-employees-natural-hairstyles-now-protected">The National Law Review</a>, California was the first state to ban discrimination against natural and protective Black hairstyles including cornrows, afros, braids, twists, and dreadlocks. The bill was spearheaded in California by Democratic State Senator Holly J. Mitchell. </p><p>As reported by <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/hollywood-s-black-hair-problem-set-we-ve-all-cried-trailers-1274876/">The Hollywood Reporter</a>, several Black actors, including Natasha Rothwell ("Insecure") and Taraji P. Henson ("Empire"), have been vocal about the difficulty in working with those who lack experience with natural hair. DaCosta mentioned this dilemma as well, explaining how often Black women would get their hair done by local stylists who were never credited in movies or shows.</p><p>"We go to our people at home, they do our hair and we show up on set ready," she said. "But the people in the hair trailers either wouldn't necessarily have the tools or the experience to know what to do."</p><p>She continued: "And it's a strange thing to have to be studying your lines in the morning and preparing, but also have to be having these conversations to say, 'Oh, well, is that water-based? Probably not a good idea to spray that right now.'"</p><p>Lee Daniels, the executive producer of "Our Kind of People," spoke about the changes in Hollywood he's witnessed during a Television Critics Association panel attended by Insider's Kim Renfro this summer.</p><p>"The progress that has been made in the industry from the time that I did 'Empire' to just now is vast," Daniels said during the panel. "There's been a wake up call in Hollywood that we have to tell our own stories and do you our own hair and embrace ourselves. "She now has the opportunity to be seen and to receive her flowers. So often we don't have that privilege."</p><p>She continued: "So often the people on set who are getting the credits in the titles at the end of a show or a film are not the actual people doing the hair. As of Saturday, the TikTok video has more than 176,000 views and the Instagram video has more than 2,270 likes. </p><p>"Do you have any regrets about things you said during your time as a judge on ANTM?" an off-camera voice asked Dickinson in the video.</p><p>"Uh, no," she replied. Season nine contestant Sarah Hartshorne recalled an instance when contestants heard explosions and rushed to the window of their Los Angeles house, terrified they were about to die. Instead, it was fireworks. Cut off from the outside world, they had no idea it was the Fourth of July. </p><p>If contestants were awake, cameras were rolling. Season four's Lluvy Gomez recalled a camera operator constantly jumping out of curtains and racing around the house to make sure he didn't miss a single moment of drama. The bathroom was the only place to escape surveillance — and, if there were two or more contestants in the room, even that was fair game. </p><p>When the cameras were off, contestants were barred from speaking and forced to stay silent "on ice" for hours.</p><p>Banks and "ANTM" co-creator Ken Mok did not respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><p>Many of the techniques used while filming "ANTM" became standard practice in reality television. But, "ANTM" was one of the first reality competitions and, insiders said, helped write the playbook for shows that followed in its footsteps. One person who worked on the show said he had come to believe "America's Next Top Model" put contestants in a "harmful environment for the sake of TV."</p><p>"You're not looking at lifting women up," he said of Banks. "You're not looking at giving them a real opportunity. Dickinson also calls Manning "fat" and says, "She's huge, she's not going to be a top model," and, "She should be working at Avis." </p><p>Manning was also criticized when she refused to participate in a nude photoshoot which she said made her feel "uncomfortable," and could be seen crying after Banks asked her not to cover her body backstage when she was wearing a bathing suit.</p><p>The TikTok has received nearly one million views and 124,000 likes. An Instagram account that appears to belong to Manning has also <a href="https://www.instagram.com/robbynemanning/?hl=en">reposted the clip</a>, along with the caption, "Response coming SOON!" Insider was unable to confirm the account belongs to Manning.</p><h2>TikTok viewers expressed outrage at the resurfaced clips </h2><p>Many of the comments underneath the TikTok video voiced outrage at how the "ANTM" judges treated Manning, as well as their classification of her as "plus-size."</p><p>There is some <a href="https://www.refinery29.com/en-gb/2021/08/10619704/what-is-considered-plus-size-fashion-model">debate</a> about the term "plus size" in modeling, which <a href="https://www.marieclaire.com.au/plus-size-models">typically</a> refers to models over a US size 6. Resurfaced footage of 'America's Next Top Model' judges calling a contestant 'fat' has gone viral

She cried on camera and was comforted by her fellow castmates <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHIjjGCMjtM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in footage shared on YouTube</a>. </p><p>When asked about the scene nearly 18 years later, a representative for Banks told Insider "the theme of this particular shoot was 'Seven Deadly Sins,' which required the girls to pose in caskets with cameras above them. The shoot had been planned beforehand, and as is standard with any production of this magnitude, it would have been near impossible to pull off an entire shoot change, especially if you factor in all of the location scouting, permit requirements, etc. that go into filming a competition series." </p><p>Rondot <a href="https://ew.com/tv/americas-next-top-model-kahlens-graveyard-shoot-planned-before-friends-death/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recalled learning about her friend's death with EW</a> and the aftermath, which she said had a lasting impact on her life. </p><p>"It was late at night, I was checking my voicemails and so many of my friends had left me messages like, 'Hey, why weren't you at the funeral? Rondot told the outlet that she almost quit the competition because she was overwhelmed and said it's still a source of trauma that contributed to her alcoholism. </p><p>"I was going to be a model, and Tyra found me," Rondot told EW. "There are dark corners and a lot of toxicity in [the industry], and I mashed a lot of things with the PTSD and drinking. I was like, this is a way to deal with it."</p><p>Rondot also said she felt like a "pawn" and was made to feel like a character instead of a human.</p><p>She added: "I felt like Tyra pulled a lot more strings than we were able to know. I think she knew a lot more of what was going on than what we knew, and anybody given that kind of power, what you do with that kind of power, it reflects on your character, I feel. These people become objects and are dehumanized for enjoyment. "And they didn't even give us a microwave to heat the food up."</p><p>Representatives for Sarah Hartshorne, Tyra Banks, and The CW did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><p>Forbes reported that <a href="https://www.forbes.com/2009/10/09/prime-time-actresses-business-entertainment-tyra.html?sh=18483fd85446">Banks had $30 million in total earnings during a 12-month period between June 1, 2008, and June 1, 2009</a>. True Hollywood Story." </p><p>"I did it knowing that it was a breach of contract, still, because I felt like it was my duty to warn other girls that were going to audition for <em>America's Next Top Model</em> to know that what you guys do and the way that you guys would poke me and use my childhood trauma against me, day in and day out," said D'Amato. </p><p>D'Amato began to cry, but added, "It was just so f----- up, and it broke my heart. D'Amato claimed Banks knew about the "horrible trauma" she suffered from her mother.</p><p>"Tyra, you knew very well the horrible trauma that my mom inflicted on me, and you also talk so much about how you wouldn't be where you are without your mother and how powerful she is," D'Amato said. They began to pinpoint the most controversial "ANTM" moments on Twitter — and many of them involved Banks. </p><p>On cycle 5, for example, the host spoke to an LGBTQ contestant Kim Stolz about being too open about her sexuality. </p><p>"I'm gay, and I'm really proud of it," Stolz told Banks.</p><p>The host replied, "I think there's a certain thing of being proud. She explained that all of the girls in her cycle went to the dentist but noted that the dentist repeatedly asked her if she wanted to close her gap. She said she refused. </p><p>"I used to cry and ask my mother for braces but we couldn't afford braces. What did my mother say to me? She reminded me that my two grandmothers, who I absolutely adored, had gaps. They're queens," she explained, adding, "I learned to love and accept my gap."</p><p>Pointing out that Banks never told her to close the gap, Evans said she realized that she and Mok had devised the drama to make for exciting reality television. </p><p>"In that moment, the 19, 20-year-old Danielle stood there realizing that it was my one-way ticket out on this side, or keeping my gap on this side and go back to Little Rock, Arkansas," she said. "I was not going to allow something that is physical on my face to stop me from getting out to make a better life for myself."</p><p>And although she adhered to the advice at the time, she explained that she felt the need to speak out amidst the resurfaced controversy. </p><p>"I wasn't tight because of Tyra's comment about me not being able to model with a gap. I wasn't tight about Miss J's comment about leaving the gap wide open for the next girl. All of that was trivial to me. I've heard it all before. That swapped race was a layer added in. It was supposed to be a different concept. I remember that very, very clearly," he said. Homes that look as though they might be within someone's budget end up going for 30% to 40% above asking. All-cash buyers are snapping up prime spots. Many homes <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-sight-unseen-home-buying-real-estate-housing-market-bubble-2022-4">are selling sight-unseen</a>. </p><p>To make matters worse, mortgage rates <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buying-home-is-hardest-since-the-great-recession-2022-4">have rocketed</a>, sending monthly costs higher, and deep-pocketed investors, many of them backed by billions from Wall Street, are adding competition. According to one recent analysis, investors <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/investors-bought-third-us-homes-january-john-burns-real-estate-2022-4">bought a third of all US homes for sale in the first quarter</a>, the highest in at least a decade. </p><p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/single-mother-sold-wall-street-stake-home-equity-investment-point-2022-04">startups are springing up</a> ready to help those who already own a home to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cash-in-home-equity-investment-splitero-startup-launch-wall-street-2022-04">access some of their equity</a>. </p><p>It's not surprising then that the number of people searching for information about a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/real-estate-investing-strategy-housing-market-crash-chief-strategist-2022-4">housing bubble</a> has also skyrocketed. Read for a Q&amp;A with the real-estate reporter James Rodriguez breaking down what's going on. </p><p><strong>What's one of the biggest things we're seeing right now in the housing market?</strong></p><p>The biggest story right now is mortgage rates, which over the past three months have risen at the <a href="https://www.freddiemac.com/pmms">fastest pace</a> in nearly 28 years. Early in the pandemic, record-low mortgage rates encouraged buying activity despite rising home prices. But this week, the average rate for a 30-year loan <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/best-mortgage-refinance-rates-today-friday-april-15-2022">hit 5% for the first time since 2011</a> — meaning hopeful buyers are staring down more expensive monthly payments, on top of the shortage of listings and intense competition for homes. </p><p><strong>One of your recent hit stories focused on </strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/single-mother-sold-wall-street-stake-home-equity-investment-point-2022-04"><strong>someone who sold Wall Street a stake in her home.</strong></a><strong> What's going on with this trend?</strong></p><p>Home values have soared over the past two years, which means American homeowners are sitting on trillions of dollars of equity that's basically trapped unless they sell their home, refinance, or get a home-equity line of credit. </p><p>But those options don't work for everyone, and a number of companies are offering an alternative called "home-equity investments," in which they give homeowners cash in exchange for a percentage of their home's future appreciation. These companies are backed by billions of dollars from Wall Street firms, which are eager to increase their bets on the US housing market. </p><p><strong>The number of people googling "Is there a housing bubble?" has skyrocketed. What would you say to them?</strong></p><p>A lot of the concern about a housing bubble today stems from the Fed raising interest rates, which increases the odds of a recession. The wins solidified Biden's place as a front-runner in the presidential race and calmed some investors who prefer his more moderate policies to Sanders'. </p><p>Stocks moved higher Wednesday following Biden's success, rebounding from investor panic around the coronavirus outbreak that roiled markets in recent weeks. The S&amp;P 500 Healthcare Index is up 3.6% on Wednesday, led by a 5% gain in the healthcare equipment and services sub-index, and beating out the S&amp;P 500 index's 1.9% increase. </p><p>Managed healthcare in particular moved as Biden's victory over Sanders lessens the chance that Medicare for All would become a reality. The ambitious plan would virtually eliminate the private health insurance sector.</p><p>Biden, however, has blasted Medicare for All and lauded the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, which he helped pass in the Obama administration. Armed with mountains of cash and an abundance of resources, their forays into new sectors can erase billions of dollars of market value in a short time.</p><p>Americans on average spent $714, or 1.6% of their take-home pay on <a href="https://www.jpmorganchase.com/corporate/institute/report-affording-healthcare.htm"><span>out-of-pocket healthcare costs</span></a> in 2016, according to a report from JPMorgan Chase. That was up 3.6% from the year before and up 13.5% from 2013. The bank also found that the US spent 18% of gross domestic product on healthcare, up from 13% in 2000.</p><p>"The ballooning costs of healthcare act as a hungry tapeworm on the American economy," Berkshire Hathaway's chairman and CEO, Warren Buffett<a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20180130005676/en/">, said in the statement.</a></p><p>"Our group does not come to this problem with answers. But we also do not accept it as inevitable.
