<ul><li>The '<keyword id="10038985" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="antisera">antisera</keyword>' has been developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in collaboration with a Hyderabad-based bio-pharmaceutical firm.</li><li>The pre-print version of the study regarding the development of the equine antisera has been posted on the Research Square platform. </li></ul>The <keyword id="682334" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drugs-Controller-General-of-India">Drugs Controller General of India</keyword> has given permission for conducting Phase-1 human clinical trial for an "antisera" that was developed by injecting inactivated SARS-CoV-2 in horses and can be a potential treatment for COVID-19, ICMR officials said on Tuesday. The 'antisera' has been developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in collaboration with a Hyderabad-based bio-pharmaceutical firm. "With Biological E Limited we have developed an horse 'antisera' and we have just got clearance for conducting clinical trials for that," ICMR Director General Dr Balram Bhargava said at press briefing on Tuesday. The 'antisera' is yet to undergo human clinical trials to establish safety and efficacy. Antisera are blood serum high in antibodies against specific antigens and are injected in humans to help kickstart the immune system to fight specific infections. "The ICMR and Biological E Limited, <keyword id="6354552" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hyderabad">Hyderabad</keyword>, have developed highly purified antisera (raised in animals) for prophylaxis and treatment of COVID-19," the apex health research body had earlier said in a tweet. The pre-print version of the study regarding the development of the equine antisera has been posted on the Research Square platform. "The study provides evidence of the potential of generating highly purified F(ab')2 from equines against SARS-CoV-2 that can demonstrate consistent and high neutralisation activity," the study paper said. "Further, in-vivo testing for efficacy of this indigenously developed, cost effective product will pave the way to clinical evaluation. Additionally, being a donor independent method, this may prove as an efficient alternative to convalescent plasma for treatment of COVID-19 patients," it said. Earlier such measures were used for controlling several viral and bacterial infections. "Although, plasma recovered from patients experiencing COVID-19 could serve similar purpose, the profile of antibodies, their efficacy and concentration keep varying from one patient to another and therefore, make it an unreliable clinical tool for patient management," the ICMR had said in a tweet. "Standardisation achievable through equine sera based treatment modality thus stands out as yet another remarkable public health initiative supported by ICMR in the time of COVID-19," it said. As part of the study, 10 healthy horses were immunised with inactivated SARS-CoV-2 and after 21 days of immunisation, plasma samples were tested. The results of the plasma samples indicated presence of SARS-CoV-2 specific IgG antibodies as detected in ELISA with neutralising capacity. It was first identified in Peru <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/map-shows-lambda-coroanvirus-variant-spread-around-world-2021-7">last year</a>, and has since spread to other countries in South America and around the world.The World Health Organization declared Lambda a "variant of interest" on June 15, in part due to its unusual and potentially dangerous mutations. That means it's suspected to be extra infectious or dangerous. (The <keyword id="6383835" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="delta">Delta</keyword> variant also started at that level, before being promoted to a <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/variants/variant-info.html#Concern">"variant of concern."</a>)<h2>The Lambda variant vs. antibodies</h2>Three mutations in the spike protein of the virus may make the Lambda variant able to resist vaccine-induced antibodies, according to lab studies summarized in a recent <a href="https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.07.28.454085v1.full.pdf">preprint paper</a> by Japanese researchers that has not yet been peer-reviewed.In the paper, the researchers wrote that the Lambda variant could be a threat to human society. "Because the Lambda variant is relatively resistant to the vaccine-induced antisera (blood serum containing antibodies against specific antigens), it might be possible that this variant is feasible to cause breakthrough infection," the authors <a href="https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/world/2021/08/coronavirus-lambda-variant-of-covid-19-a-threat-to-humanity-scientists-say.html">wrote</a>.Two additional mutations make the variant highly infectious, according to the study.However, Dr. Ricardo Soto Rifo, a researcher at the University of Chile, Santiago who is studying the Lambda variant, told the <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3ct1nvg">BBC's Health Check podcast</a> it is something to monitor, but not yet panic about.<h2>Lambda is not uniformly dominating</h2>Three months ago in Chile, half of sequenced cases were of the Lambda variant, but that has dropped to around 23%, Soto Rifo said. In Peru, however, the Lambda variant is increasingly dominating, accounting for 80% of sequenced cases now."So we cannot say what's going to happen in other countries," Soto Rifo said."We have to be worried because it has a pattern of mutations that has been associated [with] immune escape, but we still don't have evidence for increased transmission and we don't have evidence for increasing disease severity, and we don't have evidence showing that the Lambda variant is responsible for immune escape from <keyword id="79555" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vaccines">vaccines</keyword>," Soto Rifo said.<h2>Research in South America is needed to help the rest of the world understand this variant</h2>As of August 4, there had been <a href="https://www.gisaid.org/hcov19-variants/">at least 1,053 instances of Lambda infection in the US</a>, 12 of which were recorded within the past four weeks. However, the Lambda variant is not yet listed alongside other "notable" variants, such as Delta, on the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/variants/variant.html">US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website</a>. Soto Rifo said South American countries need funding and resources to sequence and track variants. If Lambda is indeed highly transmissible, it could drive a spike in cases, as has been seen with the Delta variant that's spreading worldwide. More cases also means more <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-who-got-covid-after-vaccine-describe-mild-breakthrough-illness-2021-5">breakthrough infections</a>.But there's not yet any evidence that Lambda will surpass Delta, the most transmissible variant to date."I don't think there's any more reason to be concerned than before we knew about this variant," Nathaniel Landau, a microbiologist at the New York University Grossman School of Medicine, told the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/08/health/lambda-variant-covid-peru.html">New York Times.</a> "There's no reason to think that this is now something worse than Delta."
