That's down from 51.4% in March and marks the smallest share since the Fed's survey began in 2014.Conversely, the average likelihood Americans retired before 62 closed in on 50%. The chance Americans work beyond 67 also fell in July to a record-low 32.4% from 32.9%.This could be good news for workers but presents challenges for the American economy.<h2>3 reasons Americans are retiring early</h2>More than 1 million older workers have exited the workforce since COVID-19 struck the US in February 2020, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Factors driving the mass exodus - deemed the "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/3-things-labor-shortage-people-quitting-work-afl-cio-spriggs-2021-7">Great Resignation</a>" by the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-everyone-is-quitting-great-resignation-psychologist-pandemic-rethink-life-2021-10">psychologist Anthony Klotz</a> - vary.For some, the risk of catching the coronavirus countered the desire to keep working. Roughly 1.5 million Americans cited COVID-19 as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-report-august-235000-payrolls-unemployment-rate-labor-market-recovery-2021-9">the main reason they stayed out of the labor force</a> in August, according to the jobs report. That count held flat from July levels.Others likely stayed unemployed because of a lack of attractive employment options. The biggest labor shortages are in the service industries that took the biggest hits during the pandemic. It's possible older workers balked and decided to retire early, Julia Pollak, a labor economist at the job site ZipRecruiter, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/3-things-labor-shortage-people-quitting-work-afl-cio-spriggs-2021-7">told Insider's Juliana Kaplan in July</a>.Soaring stocks also made more people rich enough to retire. The number of 401(k) and individual <keyword id="11909870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="retirement" source="Orion">retirement</keyword> accounts holding at least $1 million <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/record-americans-millionaires-401k-ira-retirement-accounts-fidelity-stock-market-2021-8">soared to a record 754,000</a> in the second quarter of 2021, Fidelity said in an August report, up 75% from the year-ago level.For all workers, the average 401(k) balance rose 24% to $129,300 from the year-ago period, Fidelity said. The average IRA balance climbed 21% to $134,900.The latest Fed data suggests early exits are the new normal, not a pandemic-era oddity.<h2>Unlocking the 'golden decade'</h2>The wave of pandemic retirements stands to overhaul the US economy.For one, it freed up younger baby boomers to better enjoy their 60s (the oldest boomers turned 75 this year). The decade already covers the most common retirement ages, but it also serves as the "golden decade" for tax planning, according to tax experts at <a href="https://www.aspire-planning.com/blog/2017/6/20/tax-planning-for-retirement-part-1-the-golden-decade-of-tax-planning-opportunity">Aspire Planning Associates</a>, because it's old enough to retire and young enough to plan ahead to reduce tax costs.Early retirements could also relieve some pressure on the labor market and force employers to shift their focus toward younger workers, as employers have grown increasingly reliant on older workers over the past two decades. While employment has been almost flat for workers younger than 55 since 2000, it's grown by nearly 20 million employees for Americans 55 and older, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Simply put, the US economy was increasingly reliant on workers less than a decade from the average retirement age.The aging of the workforce is another piece in the puzzle of an America shown by the 2020 census <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-birth-fertility-rate-decline-having-baby-millennials-kids-cost-2021-6">to be having fewer babies</a>, with fewer workers around to power the economy. With Americans less likely to work into their 60s and instead take advantage of the golden decade, employers will have to look elsewhere for workers.The search is already taking place. Job openings <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jolts-job-openings-quits-august-labor-market-hiring-data-recovery-2021-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">fell slightly to 10.4 million in August</a>, a historically elevated level that reveals demand for workers is still intense. Yet hiring <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-report-august-235000-payrolls-unemployment-rate-labor-market-recovery-2021-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">slowed sharply that month</a> and was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/september-jobs-report-194000-payrolls-unemployment-rate-down-to-48-2021-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">even weaker in September</a>. Employers will just have to find ways to get younger workers to do the jobs of older ones - or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/restaurant-automation-higher-prices-robot-workers-good-thing-labor-shortage-2021-8">robots will have to pick up the slack</a>.And of course, not all retirements are out of choice. A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirement-age-americans-cannot-afford-basic-care-one-year-study-2021-10">Boston College study</a> that followed the New York Fed survey found that more than a third of Americans between 65 and 69 years old don't have the cash to cover just a year of minimal care.

I have helped many successful senior executives, veterans, and athletes faced with the sudden transition into post-work life. Here are four keys to better prepare.First, is time. Increasing your time agency is the first key to preparing yourself and your loved ones for post-work life. Rather than letting work structure your time, plan periods of slow time in your day; first 10 minutes, then an hour, during which you do not jump on every email notification.Can you give yourself this time to journal or take a walk? Whatever you choose, be present in the moment. Feel your ability to suspend the rush of tasks, build your agency in deciding when to run and when to simply wander. You may discover that you are enjoying your slow time to yourself or by sharing it with a friend. If remote work gives you more flexibility, capitalize on this opportunity to grow your time agency. Second, is success. Executives often worry that redefining success means lowering their standards. The corporate ladder, promotions, and bonuses act as markers of success in a work-centric world. We expect them to fulfill us through a sense of belonging, purpose, and achievement. But these are externally derived.Once work no longer provides a horizon to strive for, where will your sense of accomplishment and purpose come from? True success is living a life you will feel satisfied with on your deathbed. To authentically redefine your success, find what you truly care about and dedicate more time to it. Third, we have identity. Major life transitions shake our identity. Returning to civilian life after military service, retiring from a career as a pro athlete, losing an important job, all challenge us to reinvent ourselves. Building self resilience is a process that few people anticipate. If you do only one thing: take a piece of paper and write down 20 statements describing what makes you who you are.Now see if you can add statements for each of the eight following facets: what you like and dislike, your psychological characteristics, your physical traits, your social and group identities, your demographics, your activities, what you possess or have accomplished, your memories and hopes for the future. Your self is dynamic: embrace the challenge to explore new facets. The fourth key is meaning. In a work-centric view, value is indexed on productivity and time spent with loved-ones or relaxing is referred to as "down" time. We can operate a key shift in mindset by learning from cultures where elders act as the glue that ties generations together, the center of social networks, rather than perishing at the margins of "productive" society. In these cultures, personal growth, grounding, and a sense of purpose are derived from our place in our community and time spent together. To build meaning outside of work, try prioritizing connection and service to others.<keyword id="12168699" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-great-resignation" source="Orion">The great resignation</keyword> is but a tremor announcing a much larger change in our relationship with work. The quake of post-work life is coming sooner than we prepared for and it will shake work-centric societies to their core, challenging us to rethink our culture and practices to invest in values that are not measured on a 9-to-5 scale.As rapidly aging societies, where most of us will soon not be able to rely on work to provide a sense of who we are and how we contribute to our community, it's high time we started preparing.

She majored in English, landed a prestigious internship at a top-five publishing house in New York City, and accepted a full-time position as an editorial assistant at The Center of Migration Studies of New York. Then, the pandemic sent Da'Mes back to her parent's home in Boulder, Colorado, where she left the editorial industry behind to become a freelance surface-pattern illustrator. "I finally had the time and energy to explore what I had loved as a child and discovered that when I didn't have work, I turned to art," she told Insider. Starting over in a new industry wasn't easy. Da'Mes picked up three part-time jobs as a barista, a layout editor for a small-town newspaper, and a substitute teacher at a preschool.After buying an iPad and teaching herself Procreate, she opened an Etsy shop where she sold prints and stickers with her designs. Almost a year later, she's now able to support herself on client commissions and Etsy alone. Da'Mes is one of the millions of Americans who quit their job during the pandemic, fueling what has become known as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-resignation-labor-shortage-workers-thinking-about-quitting-joblist-report-2021-10">"The Great Resignation."</a> The phenomenon was coined by Texas A&amp;M psychologist Anthony Klotz who said "pandemic epiphanies" have inspired one in four workers to leave their jobs in 2021. But people aren't just quitting, Linkedin CEO Ryan Roslansky explained in a <a href="https://time.com/6107587/linkedin-ceo-ryan-rolansky-interview/">recent interview with TIME.</a> They're transitioning jobs and switching industries entirely, otherwise known as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-great-resignation-reshuffle-gen-z-millennials-quitting-switching-careers-2021-10">"The Great Reshuffle."</a>Insider spoke to six people who successfully pivoted <keyword id="11894132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="careers" source="Orion">careers</keyword> this year - here's how they did it. <h3>1. Highlight your transferable skills and network </h3>"I leveraged my skills that weren't very industry-specific. For example, I had to work in a very ambiguous environment and create processes for myself ... that's the sort of thing that I would leverage in my interview experience. Also, doing your due diligence and speaking to people in the industry will be really beneficial. Take advantage of free resources online </h3>"There are free courses on YouTube and that can give you a lot of experience, so you can try the area out a little bit. I think before you invest in a course, you have to try and check if it is really for you. Trying some projects by yourself and studying for free gives you a little bit of an insight into what the correct career is and if you can go through with it."- Tiago Einloft, Biotechnology Researcher to UX designer<h3>4. Create a budget and fallback plan</h3>"Figure out your budget - how much money you need to spend on your mortgage, your utilities, food, debt, all your expenses. How much can you comfortably live with while you transition to your new role? Make sure you have at least six months of savings. If it's possible, having a part-time position you can lean on is super helpful so that anxiety can be kept at bay. Then with the worst-case scenario, figure out at the beginning what to do if you run out of money. Will you sell your car? Will you default to your 401k? Will you sell your stocks? What type of skills can you lean on to make money in a part-time capacity?"- Cherie Wilcox, Operations to Pivot career coach <h3>5. Keep a positive mindset</h3>"Have a good attitude. That's just one thing I always try to live by, trying to smile and keep a good attitude and knowing that even if you fail you can do better. Balance creative freedom with financial security </h3>"My advice for people who are worried about the stability of a creative freelance job is to do something that I didn't do: keep your full-time job until you have some confidence that your freelancing jobs will get a little steadier ... I think a smart way of doing it would be to keep your full-time job, develop your portfolio as much as humanly possible, and work on expanding your network and telling people about what you're doing ... <ul class="summary-list"><li>The pandemic forced millions of workers out of work, so why are millions quitting their jobs?</li><li>William Spriggs, chief economist for the AFL-CIO, broke down why people are leaving work.</li><li>Some workers are switching to new sectors, while others may be burnt out or opting out entirely.</li></ul>A strange paradox has emerged in the reopening <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>: Millions of workers are quitting, even though millions were laid off during the pandemic and abruptly left without work. It's what psychologist Anthony Klotz has termed the "<keyword id="11591498" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="great-resignation">Great Resignation</keyword>," as <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jul/03/us-jobs-report-june-trend">reported by The Guardian</a>, and the number of people who are unemployed after quitting their jobs reached a new pandemic-high in June.Separately, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Wednesday that 3.6 million people quit their jobs in May, with only <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jolts-may-job-openings-labor-market-data-worker-shortage-hiring-2021-7">one available worker for every job opening</a>. That came after 4 million people quit their jobs in April, itself a 20-year high. While the <keyword id="6469296" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="quits">quits</keyword> rate may be slightly declining from April to May, it's still the highest since December 2000, when the BLS started collecting this data.So why are people quitting, and why is it so hard to hire right now?Ahead of Wednesday's data release, Insider spoke to Dr. William Spriggs, an economics professor at Howard University and chief economist at the AFL-CIO, and he offered three reasons America is seeing so many people say, "I quit."<h2>(1) A whole lot of people have retired</h2>Spriggs told Insider that the number of people retiring is a "huge factor" in the current <keyword id="409455" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="labor-market">labor market</keyword>, as the pandemic looks to have accelerated the end of workers' careers, especially in certain industries."I think a lot of people who were 59 or 60 last year" got enough support so they were prepared to retire in 2021. This created a loop where now-empty roles need to be backfilled, and none of the firms <keyword id="6357342" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hiring">hiring</keyword> had expected they've have to make up for so many retirees.An October 2020 <a href="http://teresaghilarducci.org/images/documents/Status_Of_Older_Workers_Report/Q3_2020_OWAG_V6.pdf">report</a> from the Retirement Equity Lab found that workers over 55 had <keyword id="6358907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="unemployment">unemployment</keyword> rates higher than the younger cohort for the first time in 50 years - meaning that perhaps they cashed out their stimulus checks, enhanced unemployment benefits, and <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-pandemic-is-pushing-more-americans-to-retire-11619624451?mod=article_inline">opted out of job searching together</a>. That could be a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-of-inequity-age-discrimination-could-cost-economy-trillions-2021-6">serious blow to the economy</a>.The <a href="https://www.aarp.org/work/working-at-50-plus/info-2021/pandemic-workers-early-retirement.html">AARP reported</a> on the disparate impact for older workers. Those who are lower-income were more likely to involuntarily lose their jobs. And some retirees opted to duck out of the labor force earlier than expected due to COVID fears.Julia Pollak, a labor economist at job site ZipRecruiter, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-3-things-overlooked-julia-pollak-times-journal-ziprecruiter-2021-6">previously told Insider</a> that the biggest labor shortages are in the fields that saw the biggest employment hits during the pandemic. Older workers may have taken a look at the state of the industry, and decided just to retire instead, she said.<h2>(2) Workers are switching into better jobs</h2>Workers in lower-paying jobs may be ducking out of one job for another. For instance, they could be leaving behind leisure and hospitality jobs - which despite some recent wage growth, still pay far lower than many professions - for jobs with even higher pay growth. Even working at a fulfillment center offers consistent hours and pay, Spriggs noted, something that isn't generally true for restaurant work.Spriggs said that with a lot of switching between roles, employers seem to favor workers who already employed: "The workers who are employed are finding ways to get jobs in the sectors that are expanding and hiring." In May, the quit rate in leisure and hospitality remained stubbornly high at 5.3%."It's not like workers have all this power or new power, but it's just simply that there are more opportunities because these other sectors are finally expanding," Spriggs said.<h2>(3) Workers are no longer 'captive' to jobs</h2>Finally, the expanding web of new opportunities has disrupted the "captive nature" of ubiquitous, low-paying jobs, according to Spriggs - opening workers' eyes and wallets to a wider web of opportunity, even if they're not moving directly into a new position.Not being captive to a job means workers could also be waiting things out, whether due to COVID fears or a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-hiring-outlook-skill-gap-job-market-chamber-commerce-2021-6">mismatch</a> between what's available and their particular skillset. For instance, <a href="https://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/sites/5a700c4b-en/1/3/1/index.html?itemId=/content/publication/5a700c4b-en&amp;_csp_=d31326a7706c58707d6aad05ad9dc5ab&amp;itemIGO=oecd&amp;itemContentType=book#boxsection-d1e3771tion-d1e3771">the OECD</a> is warning long-term unemployment could remain high in wealthier countries because of a mismatch between open positions and workers' skills.Of course, people also quit because they just don't like their jobs. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-workers-quitting-quit-job-pandemic-covid-survey-monster-2021-7">Burnout</a> is the primary driver for the 95% of workers considering quitting right now, according to a new Monster.com survey, while many workers are "rage quitting," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/workers-rage-quitting-jobs-in-a-tightening-labor-market-2021-5">as Insider's Aine Can reported</a>, after getting fed up with treatment and safety precautions at their places of work.While people might have wanted to quit just as much in the before times, the COVID economy is giving them the confidence to say no thanks - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-pandemic-relief-programs-expire-end-unemployment-student-loan-deferral-2021-6">for now</a>.

Terry McAuliffe and the Republican Glenn Youngkin is shaping up as a test of the state's Democratic strength and President Joe Biden.Here are the key things to watch in the final closing weeks:McAuliffe appears to be in the lead: The former governor led by 5 percentage points in <a href="https://static.foxnews.com/foxnews.com/content/uploads/2021/10/Fox_October-10-13_Virginia_Topline_October-14-Release.pdf">the latest Fox News poll</a> among likely voters (11 points among all registered voters). Respected political handicappers like Sabato's Crystal Ball are also still giving McAuliffe the edge.Who's rocking in the suburbs?: Democrats have been ascendant in the commonwealth for over a decade. Explosive growth in northern Virginia, home to the state's fastest-growing suburbs, has powered presidential victories in a state the GOP once dominated. Both McAuliffe and Youngkin, a former co-CEO of Carlyle Group, call the area home.<ul><li>Experts say Youngkin's background may help him try to woo voters back to the GOP: "He's not hated as much as Trump is here - that's for sure," J. TSA agents have had it: Nearly 20 years after their agency's creation, TSA screeners, known as transportation security officers, told Insider they were burned out by low wages, high turnover, conflicts with management, angry travelers, and, since the onset of the pandemic, the threat of COVID-19. "They're angry, they're violent, they want to fight, they want to throw things," an Atlanta TSA officer said of unruly passengers. Texas' abortion law will stand for now: A federal appeals court sided with Texas in refusing the Justice Department's request to reinstate a temporary ban on the state law that effectively bans abortion in the state, The Washington Post reports. Anthony Klotz, a professor of management at Texas A&amp;M, is predicting a wave of quitters to make a comeback. Democrats say they don't know what Sen. Kyrsten Sinema wants: A major holdup in the talks over the party's massive $3.5 trillion spending plan is said to be opposition by Sinema to any tax increases for individuals and large corporations. Such a position threatens to deprive the package of over $700 billion in revenue to finance the bulk of Biden's agenda. Progressives recently assailed Sinema and a fellow centrist, Sen.
