<ul class="summary-list"><li>Ahmed Sourani of Gaza came to the UN climate summit to accept a $1 million prize for his nonprofit.</li><li>He said the money will go to emergency food aid and rebuilding small farms when the war ends. </li></ul>DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Ahmed Sourani was physically in Dubai, but his mind was in Gaza.The founder of a nonprofit that promotes local food production and women-owned businesses traveled to this year's UN climate summit to accept a $1 million sustainability prize from the United Arab Emirates.Back home, his wife, children, and grandchildren were in the south of Gaza in shelters, having fled from the northern part of the strip that's <a target="_blank" href="https://sheltercluster.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/public/docs/SC-PC%20Joint%20advocacy%20note_241123-1.pdf?VersionId=kPEn3lsQx.2lA5.f5YXzNV3vuWmntrxi">largely been reduced to rubble</a> by the Israeli military's bombardments."We are praying all the time for a lasting ceasefire," Sourani, founder and general coordinator of Gaza Urban and Periurban Agriculture Platform, told Business Insider over Zoom. "That's our most important wish."The Israel-Hamas war erupted after the militant group Hamas and other Palestinian fighters attacked Israel on October 7, killing about 1,200 civilians, according to Israeli authorities. He <a target="_blank" href="https://news.un.org/en/story/2023/12/1144447">invoked a rarely used power, known as Article 99</a>, to call on the 15-member UN Security Council to vote for a ceasefire. But the US for the third time blocked the resolution on Friday, the sole veto. The UK abstained and 13 other countries voted in favor.Even before the war, the majority of Gazans struggled to find food on a daily basis and relied on aid distributed by the UN, Sourani said. Most farming in the densely populated strip is done on small plots in urban areas or just outside the cities.Israel has maintained tight control over the territory through a land, air, and sea blockade since 2007, after Hamas was elected to power, while Egypt controls the southern border. Israel provides half of the Gaza Strip's electricity and there are restrictions on the movement of people and goods.<h2>Food insecurity is a constant problem in Gaza</h2>Sourani said the food insecurity crisis is why he founded the Gaza Urban and Periurban Agriculture Platform six years ago. The nonprofit has helped expand access to local food and boost incomes for family farmers, particularly women.Before the war, there were about 3,000 micro-agricultural businesses led by women, such as crop and animal production and food processing, Sourani said. The nonprofit works on developing more markets in grocery stores and malls, securing quality control certificates for their products, and providing opportunities for women to network and speak with policymakers."We need to help women restore their enterprises and the thousands of families who are in need of food, especially those who are displaced in the shelters," Sourani said.He estimated that at least 50% of those enterprises have been completely or partially destroyed during the war, with hundreds of millions of dollars lost.Sourani said it was a difficult decision to leave Gaza to accept the Zayed Sustainability Prize, but he had the support of his family and help from the UAE and its humanitarian arm, the Emirates Red Crescent, to get to Dubai.He felt it was important to share the mission of the Gaza Urban and Periurban Agriculture Platform and be a voice for Palestine at the UN summit attended by more than 100,000 world leaders, foreign diplomats, corporate executives, reporters, and activists.Palestine can speak at UN meetings, but <a target="_blank" href="https://www.un.org/unispal/history/">has non-member observer status</a> and therefore can't vote on resolutions — including on the war in Gaza.<h2>Protests spill into the UN summit in Dubai</h2>The war has at times spilled into the UN climate summit, known as COP28, including during the first days as world leaders arrived to give speeches. On mine, it's full of drain-unclogging videos, earwax-removal videos, people talking about dark childhood trauma, crash simulations of Ford Broncos, endless clips of podcasts discussing Bam Margera, and one format of video I see more than anything else — which was notably absent from that top 10 list: people talking straight into the camera.It's not too complicated why a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/viral-tiktok-video-cat-out-of-bag-flight-2023-6">funny cat video</a> is more appealing than someone speaking directly into the camera. First of all, cats don't have language barriers, and videos where someone is talking about a specific topic tend to be niche instead of broad. And hey, I like cats, too.But something deeper struck me while watching the compilation video that TikTok put together to show its best clips of the year: Boy, this seems like wholesome fun. But a TikTok full of cheerful cooking videos, cute puppies, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-keith-lee-became-tiktok-favorite-food-reviewer-in-months-2023-1">brand-friendly content</a> does not feel like the reality I see when I open the app.And while I know that everyone's For You page shows them a very different slice of the world, I feel pretty certain that literally no one out there is seeing only this rainbow-and-sunshine version of TikTok.That makes sense. The year in review made by TikTok is, of course, a piece of PR; it's marketing. It's meant to make you feel like TikTok is a positive and happy place, not the kind of of place where controversial things take place, like people talking about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-tiktok-shaping-future-election-news-2023-11">Osama bin Laden's "Letter to America"</a>.While the Top 10 videos appear to be based on views, other intangible categories like "breakthrough stars" and businesses "loved by locals" are likely a curated list to emphasize the positive.The compilation might not actually reflect what most people are doing on the app. It's probably meant to appeal to potential <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-ads-sponsored-posts-for-you-page-affiliate-creators-promotion-2023-11">advertisers</a> and maybe even calm the would-be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/montana-ban-on-tiktok-is-a-blueprint-for-federal-ban-2023-5">government</a> regulators who believe that TikTok is a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/majority-americans-think-tiktok-threat-national-security-pew-study-2023-7">national security risk</a> and hotbed of political unrest, sleaze, and addicting content for young teens.YouTube used to put out a year in review video called "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-rewind-2019-video-reactions-2019-12">Rewind</a>" every December. I will continue to watch a lady dig a tunnel under her house for a reason she never explains for as long as the US government will allow me to use this app.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The USDA is suing an exotic pet farm that houses animals like capybara, lemurs, wallabies, and a red kangaroo.</li><li>The feds say Even Keel Exotics deprived animals of food and water.</li></ul>The US Department of Agriculture has sued an exotic pet farm in Michigan that has been scrutinized by animal rights advocates for years, alleging a variety of violations and instances of mistreatment, including failing to feed an emaciated, nursing cat with four kittens, and harming a baby ring-tailed lemur by separating it from its mother. Even Keel Exotics, owned by Zachery Keeler, is a USDA-licensed facility that breeds and deals in exotic animals like capybara, kinkajou, mink, foxes, porcupines, and sugar gliders. The facility even houses a red kangaroo and two zebu — a type of humped cattle originating from India — which inspectors said had no shelter or perimeter fence. The facility, which boasts events like "Baby Animal Day," also harmed young animals like a baby wallaby and a baby endangered ring-tailed lemur by improperly allowing guests to hold and interact with them. The USDA included a social-media photo showing the baby wallaby being held by a customer."The baby wallaby was too young to be handled by members of the public, as evidenced by its small size and appearance and haricot," the lawsuit said, adding that inspectors "noted the animal was at risk of hypothermia and stress from over-handling."The lawsuit also alleged that Keeler continually removed a lemur pup from its mother and group in order to have it interact with employees and members of the public. Not only can public handling of a lemur result in "trauma, aggression, and infectious disease transfer," but removing it from its mother and group even briefly can cause "stress-induced physiological and behavioral problems, reproductive health problems in the mother, and abnormal levels of aggression in the young lemur," the lawsuit said.Ring-tailed lemurs are highly social animals that live in groups known as "conspiracies." Removing one lemur even briefly can cause the conspiracy to oust that lemur. The lawsuit said Keeler has even attempted to sell the lemur pup for $3,500.Even Keel Exotics did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.Inspectors who visited Even Keel Exotics also documented multiple instances where animals had no potable water in their enclosures. When the inspectors offered the animals water, they drank excessively, sometimes for minutes at a time, the inspection records said.One capybara drank for 40 seconds straight when inspectors offered water, and a rabbit whose water dish was dry and full of shavings gulped down water for a full minute, the reports said. A porcupine also spent two minutes "excessively" drinking, and inspectors said two arctic foxes "drank ravenously" when they ordered Keeler to provide water.An adult female cat and her four nursing kittens had no food or potable water, and when inspectors ordered Keeler to provide food, the adult cat ate for two minutes, while the kittens gorged themselves for over four minutes, the court documents said.Animal rights advocates have sought to draw attention to Even Keel Exotics in the past. Earlier this year, the ASPCA criticized the USDA for failing to take action against the facility's failure to allow inspectors to visit."This USDA-licensed facility has a long, problematic history of harming animals and endangering the public," the ASPCA wrote, accusing the government of "leaving an estimated 600 vulnerable animals in [Keeler's] care without any oversight at all."

In my early 20s I became a true vegetarian, and then in my early 30s I became a vegan.The notion that someone tried to influence my diet in my formative years has made me reluctant to do the same for my son. As an adult, I'm happy that my food choices finally reflect my values.<h2>The one thing he can't eat is tuna</h2>Aside from avoiding excess salt and sugar, the only place I've drawn the line is with tuna. Nobody knows for sure yet, but it's possible these irresistible snacks — laced with mysterious pills — might be helping the old dogs live longer, healthier lives. Researchers hope that rapamycin might be a kind of fountain of youth in pill form: an anti-aging drug that could help people — and their pets — live longer, healthier lives.<h2>Dogs with more energy and less gray hair, or "Wishful thinking?" </h2><div type="image" title="dog and owner at home" height="902" width="1200" msid="99239436" hostid="261"></div>So far, more than 85 dogs including Dennis and Jake are involved in the rapamycin study, formally called TRIAD (Test of Rapamycin in Aging Dogs.) The research includes teams of veterinarians working in at least 15 different trial sites nationwide, from New York to Texas, Colorado, and — soon — California. It's all being spearheaded by longevity researchers <a href="https://live-uwhalo.pantheonsite.io/people/daniel-promislow/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Daniel Promislow</a> and <a href="https://live-uwhalo.pantheonsite.io/people/matt-kaeberlein/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Matt Kaeberlein</a> at the University of Washington School of Medicine and veterinarian <a href="https://vscs.tamu.edu/person/6067/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kate Creevy</a> at Texas A&amp;M, who are hoping to enroll 580 dogs in the study by 2025, and finish the study by 2028."They take blood, urine, fecal samples, they do blood pressure," said Jake's owner, Timothy Cleary.Jake "is getting more comprehensive physicals than I do," Cleary said, referencing the checkups the dog gets at the University of Georgia every six months, which can last for up to four hours. The dogs, and their owners, as well as researchers conducting the study, have no way of knowing exactly what dose of medication the dogs are taking, or if they're even on any medication at all. The study is designed so that while some dogs get medicine, other dogs get placebo pills. That way, researchers hope to actually figure out the real effect of this drug on dog lifespan. Cleary says it might be "wishful thinking" but he's convinced that after a few months on the pills, he started to notice a difference in his dog. But the effects of rapamycin on aging dogs — and on <a href="https://www.insider.com/heres-why-a-longevity-researcher-takes-rapamycin-for-joint-pain-2023-3">aging people</a> — is still being studied. And the drug is not without risk factors: Because rapamycin suppresses the immune system, <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/druginfo/meds/a609032.html#:~:text=you%20may%20develop%20sores,your%20treatment%20with%20everolimus." target="_blank" rel="noopener">patients on the drug sometimes develop mouth sores, and can have slower healing times</a> for wounds and cuts.That's why researchers are studying the drug on dogs first, before moving to more expansive human clinical trials. <a href="mailto:kaeber@uw.edu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Matt Kaeberlein</a>, co-director of the Dog Aging Project, told Insider that dogs are a great animal to use for research because they share our environment.Unlike yeast and flies, dogs don't live in laboratories; they roll around in the grass, sniff pollen and pollutants, and accompany us through the drive-thru, sometimes snagging bites of our food. The fact that a dog's life "mirrors the human environment gives us some reason to be more confident that this will in fact work in people," Kaeberlein said.<h2>A biotech startup is also testing aging pills for dogs — with one specifically formulated for larger breeds </h2><div type="image" title="picture of celine" height="1220" width="1626" msid="99239442" hostid="261"></div>Kaeberlein and the University of Washington team aren't the only ones testing anti-aging treatments on dogs.Celine Halioua, founder and CEO of biotech startup Loyal, is similarly dedicated to helping dogs live longer and stay healthier, with an eventual eye towards helping humans do the same. Loyal recently received what Halioua believes is the very first <a href="https://blog.loyalfordogs.com/loyals-latest-milestone-the-first-longevity-clinical-study-design-supported-by-the-fda/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Food and Drug Administration-supported longevity study design</a>, for upcoming trials of two different drugs for aging dogs. No drug has ever been FDA approved for <a href="https://www.insider.com/metformin-diabetes-weight-loss-anti-aging-drug-long-covid-prevention-2023-2">aging as a condition</a> — in animals or in people — so if her trial is successful, it could be a watershed moment for a whole new area of drug development, discovering what scientists call geroprotectors, drugs that could help combat death."It's a very, very important milestone for the aging field, because if we want to have more aging drugs, we need to have a defined clinical path for a drug going from zero to market for aging," she told Insider. Loyal is working on developing <a href="https://loyalfordogs.com/products" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two different pills.</a> The first, called LOY-001, is designed to help bigger dogs live longer, by minimizing factors that promote premature aging among bigger breeds. The second, LOY-002, is one that Halioua says works a lot like rapamycin but is a different compound. It also mimics fasting and improves a dog's metabolism, and it could be used in dogs of all sizes, if trials show it works.<h2>Anti-aging drugs that don't break the bank</h2><div type="image" title="matt k with his dog" height="1199" width="1599" msid="99239444" hostid="261"></div>Halioua says that the anti-aging field often gets a bad reputation for being "associated with billionaires who wanna live forever," but what's great about developing drugs for dogs is it's exactly the opposite of that. Treatments need to be cheap, accessible, and super safe if dog owners are going to be willing to use them. "Our drugs are gonna be cash pay," she said. "We're not betting on insurance for marketing our drugs. And so by definition, anything we're developing would have to be accessible if we want it to be marketable at all." Eventually, the same model could be used for people, she suspects. "My vision of what an aging drug should be is just a daily, cheap pill that the vast majority of the older US population is on to reduce the risk and severity of future age-related diseases," she said. "It's kind of the ultimate preventative medicine."Kaeberlein, who isn't shy about admitting <a href="https://www.insider.com/heres-why-a-longevity-researcher-takes-rapamycin-for-joint-pain-2023-3">he's already tried rapamycin out on his own aging joints</a>, agrees with Halioua that yes, it would be fantastic to have a cheap salve for age-related decline in people some day, especially one that costs just a few bucks per pill. But, even if that's not possible, he'd still be satisfied with research that enables his own dog, and other pooches, to stick around just a little while longer. "If we can increase the healthy longevity of pet dogs, that would be fantastic," he said. "I'm a dog person and I can say I've achieved something important in my career if we have that impact."
