<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Kenyan insect farm InsectiPro is chipping away at the 1,900 tons of organic <keyword id="6398001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="food-waste">food waste</keyword> produced in Nairobi every day.</li><li>The farm feeds more than 30 tons of discarded fruit to black soldier fly <keyword id="6367574" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="larvae">larvae</keyword>, then dries and sells the larvae as animal feed.</li><li>Demand for the company's animal feed has increased since the pandemic began.</li></ul><p>At an insect farm in <keyword id="6360004" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="kenya">Kenya</keyword>, fly larvae are being used to combat food waste.</p><p>It's part of the <a href="https://www.insectipro.com/">InsectiPro</a> farm's mission to chip away at the 1,900 tons of organic waste produced in Nairobi every day.</p><p>InsectiPro uses the larvae of black soldier flies to break down more than 30 tons of discarded fruit each day. The fruit scraps come in from markets, juice companies, and breweries, and are then fed to the larvae.</p><p>From there, the larvae are dried and sold as animal feed. </p><p>Any excess waste created by these larvae are sold to neighboring farms to use in the soil.</p><p>"The biggest difference is that the [black soldier fly] manure, the plant converts it very fast, so it is like fertilizer," farmer Douglas Njoroge told Reuters. "It is taken up very fast, it breaks into the soil very well, and it also helps the soil maintain a very good texture."</p><p>Talash Huijbers founded InsectriPro two years ago. The farm normally produces around two tons of larvae each day, but the pandemic cut production in half.</p><div type="image" title="fly larvae" height="1080" width="1920" msid="78563709" hostid="261"></div><p>Meanwhile, border closures slowed imports of other types of animal feed like fishmeal, which is popular in Kenya, creating more demand for InsectiPro's locally sourced larvae. Growing concerns over fishmeal's environmental impact have made room for more sustainable and affordable alternatives like <keyword id="6433816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Insects">insects</keyword>.</p><p>InsectiPro isn't alone — entrepreneurs and startups in <a href="https://waste-management-world.com/a/in-depth-harvesting-insects-to-recycle-food-waste#:~:text=So%20which%20bugs%20are%20best,house%20fly%20(Musca%20domestica).">North America</a> and <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidebanis/2019/06/14/can-using-insects-as-animal-feed-reduce-the-climate-impact-of-meat-production/#4acaa33e404a">Europe</a> are part of the movement, too.</p><p>The company plans to eventually use every part of the insect, including the shell.</p><p>InsectiPro has more abstract goals in mind too, like getting people to think about waste, and these little grubs, in a different way. </p><p>"We think InsectiPro is a company of the future, because we are where sustainability and profitability meet," Huijbers said. "And more importantly, we see the beauty within the beast. And I think you should too."</p>

A German zoo is losing so much money from coronavirus closures that it may have to start feeding the animals to each other

<p>BuzzFeed co-founder Jonah Peretti told the audience at South by Southwest that last year. And he should know.</p>
<p>His site is investing in original reporting and traditional journalism, but the newsroom has grown on the backbone of truly viral posts which sustain BuzzFeed from a monetary perspective. Many of those viral posts have to do with cute animals.</p>
<p>For example, one article titled "Basset Hounds Running" <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/04/29/buzzfeeds-jonah-peretti-explains-if-you-dont-like-cute-animal-pics-hence-buzzfeed-youre-not-human/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Techcrunch+%28TechCrunch%29">amassed 1.2 million page views</a>.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Because of its highly entertaining animal posts, BuzzFeed has gotten a reputation for producing pieces of "fluff" journalism rather than "real" journalism. In other words, it's great at culling together intriguing photos of animals doing ridiculous things, but it has yet to establish itself as a trusted source of news.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="http://www.thedodo.com">TheDodo</a>, another site Peretti is involved with, just launched. Instead of having to make an excuse for its animal posts (like BuzzFeed sometimes has to do) it's embracing animals right from the get-go.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Today, TheDodo went live with funding from Greycroft, Softbank Capital, Sterling Equities, RRE and a personal investment from Oak Investment Partners' Fred Harmon. It's being run by Izzie Lerer, whose father Ken co-founded The Huffington Post with Jonah Peretti and whose brother, Ben, co-founded Thrillist. <a href="http://nymag.com/news/intelligencer/ken-ben-lerer-2014-1/index1.html">The Lerers</a> also started a </span>venture arm, Lerer Ventures, which has invested in 185 startups over the past few years. Peretti is an advisor. Izzie is joined by Salon's former editor-in-chief, Kerry Lauerman.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The Dodo is the first website built entirely on another Lerer Ventures startup, RebelMouse. This makes it easy for The Dodo to pull in cute animal posts from social media and takes pressure off The Dodo to produce original content, which is more expensive. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">At first glance, The Dodo is cute overload. But Lerer says there will be substance to some of the stories. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"<span>Caring about animals in the past has often been dismissed as overly sentimental or radical, but now the whole movement is moving mainstream," Izzie Lerer justifies her site in a press release. "There's a growing readiness and willingness to listen to people speak about issues concerning animals, and The Dodo will provide a home for these kinds of conversations."</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>In short, you'll never see animals being mistreated on The Dodo. Instead, it's a place that celebrates pets. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>It's tempting to think: why does the web need yet another destination for cute animal photos?</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>But when you stop and mull it over, it's brilliant. The Dodo is setting itself up to be BuzzFeed but without the baggage of having to be a "real" news and journalism site. It can celebrate animals, and celebrate all the viral traffic that comes with it.</span></span></p>

The Los Angeles Police Department initially opened up an investigation into the matter last month, but it's since closed the case, according to BuzzFeed. The LAPD would only tell Business Insider on Tuesday afternoon that it was "aware of the matter" pertaining to Houts and her dog.</p><p>Last month, Houts made headlines <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-brooke-houts-dog-abuse-video-hitting-spitting-apology-2019-8">after she accidentally uploaded an unedited video</a> to her YouTube channel featuring her Doberman dog named Sphinx. But a police spokesperson told BuzzFeed News on Tuesday that it had decided not to press charges.</p><p>"Animal Task Force looked into the matter - obviously they saw the video the public had seen," police told BuzzFeed News. "They determined it didn't rise to the level of animal cruelty." </p><p>The video in question was quickly deleted from YouTube, but others were quick to upload their own versions, and Houts was <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=brooke%20houts&amp;src=typed_query">subsequently reamed online</a>.</p><p>In one clip from the video, the dog jumps on Houts while she's filming for the video. In turn, Houts holds down the dog, yells "stop" at him, and appears to spit on him just out of frame of the camera - although Houts has said she didn't do that.</p><p>In the days of backlash, Houts <a href="https://twitter.com/brookehouts/status/1158906113741299712">issued an apology on Twitter</a> to "anyone who has been effected [sic] negatively by the footage." The YouTuber who hit her dog in a video and then accidentally posted the footage reportedly won't face animal-cruelty charges

<ul class="summary-list"><li>As part of an annual labor march, thousands of people in <keyword id="46274" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Taiwan">Taiwan</keyword> protested against the government's decision to overturn a longstanding ban on US <keyword id="79111" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="pork">pork</keyword> imports.</li><li>US pork that contains "acceptable" residues of the animal feed additive ractopamine will be allowed from January 1. Taiwan has banned the sale of pork from <keyword id="6547934" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pigs">pigs</keyword> fed on the drug since 2006.</li><li>Both Taiwan citizens and the opposition party Kuomintang have expressed concerns about the effects ractopamine could have on both animals and humans.</li><li>"I have a child and when we eat things with ractopamine, it's not good for our bodies," protester Jacky Tsui told the <keyword id="176712" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Associated-Press">Associated Press</keyword>. "I hope the government can see that we citizens oppose this."</li></ul><p>On Saturday, thousands of people gathered in the Taiwanese capital of <keyword id="6384167" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="taipei">Taipei</keyword> to protest against the country legalization of US pork imports.</p><p>In August, the government announced it would lift a ban on US pork and beef imports from January 1, prompting Taiwanese citizens and rival politicians to express concerns about the safety of this meat.</p><div type="image" title="Taiwan pork" height="2560" width="3413" msid="79370369" hostid="261"></div><p>Under the new import policy, pork that has "acceptable" residues of ractopamine, a drug added to animal feed to make farm animals more lean, will be allowed to enter the country.</p><p>The drug is banned in most countries including the EU, mainland China, and Russia, but it is legal in around 27 countries including Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand. In the US, it is used to feed turkeys, and cattle, and <a href="https://www.livescience.com/47032-time-for-us-to-ban-ractopamine.html">between 60% and 80% of the country's pigs</a>.</p><p>The sale of pork from pigs given ractopamine has been banned in Taiwan since 2006, but from 2012 the country allowed the use of the drug in cattle feed.</p><div type="image" title="Taiwan pork" height="2673" width="3564" msid="79370370" hostid="261"></div><p>The government's announcement to allow the import of American pork from pigs fed on ractopamine has met with fierce opposition, both by the opposition Kuomintang party and individual citizens.</p><p>"Taiwanese pigs don't eat ractopamine and yet you are asking Taiwanese people to? Does this make sense?" <a href="https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-taiwan-protests-idUSKBN28206H">KMT Chairman Johnny Chiang said</a>.</p><p>Demonstrators marched in front of the Presidential Office Building in Taipei as part of an annual labor march known as "Autumn Struggle," which Kuomintang rallied its supporters to attend. BuzzFeed just launched its second app - and it's like a Tinder for pictures of people's adorable pets 

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Damian Dovarganes/AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Fortunately, despite the news, alligator attacks are <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/how-often-do-alligators-attack-2016-6">very rare</a> - and we all want to keep it that way.</p><p>While some attacks may be unpredictable, there are a few things you can do to keep yourself safe, like watching alligators from a generous distance and only swimming in daylight, when they are less active.</p><p>But there's also one really important thing you can do that may affect whether <em>someone else</em> has a bad encounter with an alligator: Don't feed them. Ever.</p><p>Like <a href="http://myfwc.com/media/152527/LivingwithCrocodiles.pdf">crocodiles</a>, <a href="http://www.ypf.org/site/News2?page=NewsArticle&amp;id=5185">bears</a>, and other wild animals, dangerous or not, alligators naturally tend to avoid humans.</p><p>But that <a href="https://www.nps.gov/brca/learn/nature/feedingwildlife.htm">instinct can be overwhelmed</a> if people feed them. If enough handouts come along, wild animals begin to associate humans with food.</p><p>That means when those acclimated animals run into a human, they stick around to see whether they can get a snack from them. Animals who have never been fed by humans are more likely to go the other direction, keeping humans and themselves safer.</p><p>That's why Florida has <a href="http://myfwc.com/media/152524/Alligator-Brochure.pdf">strict laws</a> about not feeding alligators or crocodiles, punishable with a fine or even <a href="http://www.naplesnews.com/community/activist-florida-alligator-feedings-happening-in-epidemic-proportions-ep-388652402-333297931.html">jail time</a>. <p>Emergency teams responded to a report around mid-morning of an explosion and building collapse at International Nutrition in south Omaha, where 38 employees were working at the time, authorities said.</p>
<p>International Nutrition makes feed, vitamins and nutritional products for animals including swine, cattle, goats, poultry and aquatic species.</p>
<p>Nine people were injured and taken to local hospitals, according to Omaha Interim Fire Chief Bernard Kanger. Their conditions were not immediately available, but The World-Herald newspaper reported that at least two were critically injured.</p>
<p>Kari Cook told the World-Herald she was waiting for news of her boyfriend, John Broderick, a shift supervisor at the plant.</p>
<p>She told the newspaper he sent her a text at 10:09 a.m. reading: "Major accident. I'm hurt and trapped. Love you."</p>
<p>She said she replied: "Honey, answer me," but that he had not responded.</p>
<p>Nate Lewis, a production line worker, told the newspaper that the building caved in from the third floor. He also said it turned pitch black inside the plant and he crawled through the rubble to safety.</p>
<p>Kanger said authorities had not yet been able to search all areas of the facility, which sustained significant damage.</p>
<p>The grain handling industry, which includes feed plants, is considered "high hazard," due partly to the risk of fires and explosions from grain dust accumulation, according to the Occupational Safety &amp; Health Administration website.</p>

Chinese pork prices have fallen more than 40% since mid-January amid sluggish demand, increased imports, and panic-selling after a recent swine fever outbreak.</p><p>The price rout since February triggered  a sell-off in the large pigs that could be delaying a rebound in prices, Lin Guofa, senior analyst at consultancy Bric Agriculture Group told Bloomberg.</p><p>For farmers who still own the larger hogs, falling pork prices have led to poor returns on the animals because they're larger and more expensive to feed. <br /> <br /><br /><br /><br /></p>

New Delhi, May 8 () The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) on Friday launched an interactive webinar to create awareness about procedures to be followed in the dairy value chain during the COVID-19 pandemic.<p> Dairy farmers and other stakeholders from Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Assam participated in the webinar. More than 500 queries were raised and were responded immediately by NDDB experts, an official statement said.</p><p> "During this pandemic, milch animals must be taken care of, as any compromise on their feeding and healthcare would impact reproductive efficiency and productivity," NDDB Chairman Dilip Rath said.</p><p> Experts at NDDB are working to ensure that COVID-19 does not become a barrier in sharing information on new innovations and technologies with dairy farmers, he said.</p><p> Dairy farmers need to connect with the board's experts through the digital platform and follow guidelines to overcome the difficult situation, he added.</p><p> The 45-minute webinar had peak live viewership of 1,664 and total views have crossed 18,000 in 24 hours with total watch time of 925 hours, the board said.</p><p> NDDB's experts from the departments of animal health, animal nutrition, animal breeding and cooperatives services addressed the immediate concerns of dairy farmers and discussed ways to handle the prevalent challenges.</p><p> The webinar highlighted ayurveda-based Ethno Veterinary Medicine (EVM) for cost effective management of some major ailments of milch animals (like FMD, Mastitis, heat stress), importance of vaccination and ear tagging, feed management, and balanced feeding to increase milk production.</p><p> That apart, the webinar also discussed about importance of artificial insemination and breeding management, difficulties faced by cooperatives and ensuring regular payments to farmers.</p> This digital platform will continue maintaining connect with the stakeholders, disseminate information, and get diverse set of experts on the platform to delve on developments in the sector including innovative practices and success stories, the NDDB added.
