Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol's 'Animal' enters ₹100 crore club in 2 days

On Friday November 7, 2014 it was the turn of Rang Rasiya and Shaukeens. The movie Rang Rasiya has been awaiting a release for the last six years and has Randeep Hooda in the lead role. 
 
The movie managed a mere 5% opening on Friday and its first weekend collections totalled 2.35 crore. 
 
Notably, Shaukeens is a remake of the old movie with the same name and stars Akshay Kumar, Anupan Kher, Anu Kapoor, Piyush Mishra and Lisa Haydon. The movie got a 25% opening and managed to collect Rs 18.52 crore in the first weekend. On the first Monday, post release, it managed to add another Rs 2.83 crore to its tally. 
 
However, the big release this week was the Hollywood movie Interstellar. Though it is not a franchise movie but it garnered a good buzz especially in the metros. The movie garnered earnings to the tunes of Rs 2 crores on the first Friday of its India release. The business grew further on Saturday to touch Rs 3 crore, and interestingly, even on Sunday the movie manage to pocket another Rs 4.10 crore. 
 
Interstellar has managed to get good collections worldwide. Early <a href="file:///C:\Users\surbhi.chawla\Documents\CyberLink">numbers</a> for this movie directed by Christopher Nolan's are reporting <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> at $52.2 million. That's slightly short of expectations which had the film outpacing the opening weekend for last year's sci-fi space epic, Gravity. That film made $55.8 million upon debut. 
 
Now, all eyes are on November 14, 2014 when Kill Dil releases. The movie stars Parineeti Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Ali Zafar and Govinda in the lead role.

The report, first launched in 2016, looks at the Indian box office across languages, highlighting key trends in the theatrical sector. Because of theatres being shut for several months during the pandemic, Ormax Media has released a combined edition for the two pandemic-impacted years (2020 and 2021). The report analyses the impact of the pandemic on the Indian box office. Compared to gross box office of almost ₹ 11,000 Cr in 2019, the cumulative revenue across 2020 and 2021 put together stood at only ₹ 5,757 Cr (an annual average of less than ₹ 2,900 crore. If 2019 is taken as the benchmark, the Indian film industry lost at least ₹ 15,000 Cr at the box office because of the pandemic. The footfalls also came down from 103.0 Cr in 2019 to 22.5 Cr and 42.7 Cr in 2020 and 2021 respectively. The pandemic years also saw significant changes in the share of different language industries within the Indian film industries. With 29% share of box office (2020 &amp; 2021 cumulative), the Telugu language industry took the top position, ahead of Hindi, whose share declined from 44% to 27%. Four Telugu films (Pushpa, Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, Sarileru Neekevvaru &amp; Vakeel Saab) feature in the top 10 films across the two years, compared to only three Hindi films (Tanhaji, Sooryavanshi &amp; 83). Spider-Man: No Way Home (Hollywood), Master &amp; Darbar (both Tamil) complete the top 10 list. Speaking about the report, <keyword id="161338" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shailesh-kapoor" source="Orion">Shailesh Kapoor</keyword>, Founder &amp; CEO - Ormax Media, said: “The pandemic has severely impacted the Indian box office, with five out of the eight quarters in 2020 and 2021 having zero or negligible business, because of theatres being shut in all or most parts of India. The good news is that the last quarter of 2021 (Oct-Dec) saw excellent recovery, registering gross box office of more than Rs. 2,000 Cr, which reaffirms that the theatrical business is very much here to say.” Speaking about the growing share of box office from the Southern languages, <keyword id="265335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gautam-jain" source="Orion">Gautam Jain</keyword>, Partner - Ormax Media, said: “The cumulative share of the four South languages went up from 36% in 2019 to 59% in 2020 &amp; 2021, highlighting how these industries managed to navigate through the pandemic with more relative success than Hindi films. While we can expect Hindi cinema to stage a recovery in 2022, the rise of South cinema is a story to watch out for.”

 The incarnation dramedy involves three brothers who are supposed to marry three sisters but things go haywire after one of the brothers ‘remembers’ their past. The film features Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Bobby Deol, Kriti Sanon, Kriti Kharbanda, Pooja Hegde and Chunkey Pandey. This is the fourth in the series of the heavily successful Housefull series whose stories revolve an ensemble cast, confusion---all in a large home. While all the other movies were directed by Sajod Khan, his involvement in the #metoo scandal, made the team bring in a new director to helm the project. This movie directed by Farhad Samji opened on October 25 to mixed reviews, but made nearly ₹19 crore on the first day. Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 4 beats bad reviews to make ₹80 crore in 4 days

Filmmaker-actor Rohit Shetty's latest release 'Kantara' collected Rs 170 crore in India and Rs 18 crore overseas, for a worldwide gross of Rs 188 crore, becoming the second highest-grossing Kannada film of all time beating Yash-starrer 'KGF'. Due to the Diwali weekend, the film got a boost at the collections. The total box office collections of the film have reached Rs 170 crore.  Disney’s FROZEN 2 is now the biggest weekend grosser for any animation movies in India collecting ₹19.10 NBOC (₹22.74 cr GBOC) in 3 days. Families and kids thronged theaters in huge numbers. According to Box Office India, the film posted a healthy weekend but might not hold well on weekdays. Disney India got Priyanka Chopra and Parineeti Chopra on board to voice Elsa and Anna — two lead characters of Frozen 2 (Hindi Version), says Walt Disney Studio. Avengers Endgame box office collection and booking

Directed by Anil Sharma, the film is a sequel to Deol's 2001 blockbuster "Gadar: Ek Prem Katha". The actor has reprised his iconic role of Tara Singh in the film, released in theatres on August 11. The film had collected Rs 83.18 crore in the first two days of its release and on Sunday, registered a surge of over 20 per cent. The film has created a "non-solo, non-holiday release's fastest 100-crore milestone", the makers said in a press note. "With each passing day, its dominance has only grown stronger, culminating in a staggering day three collection of Rs 51.70 crore net, amassing a colossal total of Rs 134.88 crore net," they said. Produced by Zee Studios, the movie also features Ameesha Patel returning as Sakeena and Ukarsh Sharma as Charanjeet. "Gadar 2" is set in 1971 and follows Tara Singh's journey to Pakistan to rescue his son, Charanjeet Singh from the Pakistani Army. The original was set during the Partition.

Sunny Deol's 'Gadar 2' crosses Rs 100 crore mark at box office

Centered around holiday characters, "Guardians" opened to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/skyfall-crosses-200-million-in-the-us-2012-11">studio's weakest performance since 2006</a>. 
Analysts anticipated the film would earn in the <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2012/11/dreamworks-animation-stock-rise-guardians-opening-box-office/">neighborhood of $60 million</a>. Rather, it grossed nearly three times less with <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=guardians.htm">$23.8 million</a>. 
As an immediate result, the company's stock <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dreamworks-stock-tanksafter-weak-debut-2012-11">dropped nearly five percent</a> the following Monday. Stifel analyst Benjamin Mogil predicts the film could earn <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/dreamworks-animation-stock-surges-8-428424" target="_blank">$150 million domestically and another $300 million overseas</a>. 
Those numbers are 20 percent below the $60.3 million opening of last summer's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=madagascar3.htm">Madagascar 3</a>." Current tracking for "The Croods" is more in line with the "Shrek" spinoff "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=pussinboots12.htm">Puss in Boots</a>." 
If the film performs well, then it will prove the "Guardians" debut was simply an anomaly. 
However, if it fails to meet analyst's estimates, and teeters close to DreamWorks Animation's Thanksgiving debut, the studio could have a larger problem on its hands with only one other film — <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1860353/" target="_blank">about a racing snail</a> — out later this year. 
Right now, there are two major problems DreamWorks Animation has to overcome: it's over-inflated film budgets and its heavy reliance on animated features to produce most of the company's revenue. 
The studio's immense budgets puts an insane amount of pressure on DreamWorks Animation to make sure every one of its features are box-office gold. 
"They spend as if every movie they produce is a new 'Shrek,' but it's unreasonable to spend as if you are making big, big tentpoles when you really aren't," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dreamworks-are-out-of-control-2013-2">Vasily Karasyov, an analyst for Susquehanna Financial Group, told The Wrap</a>.

Even the studio knows its films are gambles. 
From DreamWorks Animation's latest <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1297401/000129740113000005/dwa-12312012x10xk.htm">10K SEC filing</a>: 
"Our success is primarily dependent on audience acceptance of our films, which is extremely difficult to predict and, therefore, inherently risky … Our business is currently substantially dependent upon the success of a limited number of film releases each year and the unexpected delay or commercial failure of any one of them could have a material adverse effect on our financial results and cash flows." 
The <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1297401/000129740113000005/dwa-12312012x10xk.htm" target="_blank">company reported</a> it relies on the performances of its features to earn most of its revenue: 
"We currently derive a significant percentage of our revenue from a single source, the production of animated family entertainment, and our lack of a diversified business could adversely affect us."
Translation: any film DreamWorks Animation puts out can be a huge success story or a potential disaster for the company.

It will be the only animated kids' film out The Weinstein Company's kid flick "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=escapefromplanetearth.htm" target="_blank">Escape From Planet Earth</a>" will be heading out of the box-office top ten this week during its sixth week in theaters.
Disney's "Oz," meanwhile, will be in its third week at the <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword>. After grossing <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&amp;id=oz.htm" target="_blank">$41.3 million</a> last weekend, if it continues to follow the trend of similar film "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&amp;id=aliceinwonderland10.htm" target="_blank">Alice in Wonderland</a>," it should take in somewhere around the range of $25-$30 million this weekend.
The other two big releases this weekend are the Tina Fey and Paul Rudd rom-com, "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=admission.htm" target="_blank">Admission</a>," and a Gerard Butler action thriller, "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=olympushasfallen.htm" target="_blank">Olympus Has Fallen</a>," as competition.
Positive ticket sales As of Wednesday, "The Croods" was <a href="http://www.fandango.com/" target="_blank">Fandango</a>'s number one selling movie representing 31 percent of daily ticket sales. 
The film is currently outpacing ticket sales 2009's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=cloudywithachanceofmeatballs.htm" target="_blank">Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs</a>." That film went on to earn $30.3 million opening weekend.
The only thing that could prevent the DreamWorks' cavemen family from a good weekend is the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hollywood-is-having-a-terrible-year-2013-3" target="_blank">poor box-office performance of the year</a> so far.

"Finding Dory" took the second place slot in the category when it opened at $6.2 million earlier this summer, according to Box Office Mojo.Four of the top ten highest-grossing movies of the year have been animated, including "Zootopia", "The Angry Birds Movie" and "Kung Fu Panda 3," in addition to "Finding Dory."If "The Secret Life of Pets" continues the trend it started Thursday, it will mean half of the top-ten movies will be animated.Comcast and Disney are the two companies that stand to benefit most from the animation boom. Animated movies are taking over the 2016 box office

 Long before release, Darbar has been the twitter trend. The movie is already a winner since it earned as much as <a href="https://twitter.com/LMKMovieManiac/status/1215339822216175617">₹220 crore by selling rights</a>. And, it could bring in viewers en masse since it’s the only movie released during Pongal, the biggest festival in South India. The film, directed by AR Murugadoss, sees Rajinikanth play a cop named Aaditya Arunasalam, who has no rules or mercy. Like most of the heroes in Murugadoss's films, Aaditya Arunasalam has to break the law to ensure justice is served. When he is sent to Mumbai on a special operation to handle the city's drug menace, he goes on a murderous rampage. He gets labelled 'a murderer' and 'a cop with no ethics' by the papers. As part of the operation, Aaditya crosses paths with dreaded gangster Hari Chopra (Suniel Shetty) and the ensuing face-off between them forms the crux of the story. Among the other stars are Nayanthara, Suniel Shetty, Nivetha Thomas, Prateik Babbar and Nawab Shah. It is also off to a good start in several foreign countries including Singapore, Malaysia and Australia. It is the number one debut in Singapore followed by 1917, Ip Man 4: The Finale and Ashfall. The film has earned $615 in the USA as well, according to trade analyst Ramesh Bala.

 Twitter was flooded with positive reviews soon after the film was released. At some theatres in South India, people were seen showering flowers and coins to celebrate the movie.

 However, film critics are not very pleased with the movie. They believe the movie is strictly for Rajinikanth’s fans and delivers nothing new. “Despite A.R. The film, about the first caveman family, performed <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/showdowns/chart/?id=dreamworksmarch.htm">better than the release of "How to Train Your Dragon"</a> back in March 2010. 
Meanwhile, Gerard Butler's cold streak has come to and end at the box office. After a slew of romance flops at in 2012, "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=olympushasfallen.htm">Olympus Has Fallen</a>" soared at theaters opening weekend. 
The only new release that didn't catch on this weekend was Tina Fey's rom-com, "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=admission.htm">Admission</a>," which suffered from <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/admission/reviews/" target="_blank">underwhelming reviews</a>. 
<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=silverliningsplaybook.htm">"Silver Linings Playbook</a>" finally bows out of the top ten in its 19-week at theaters. The Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence comedy has now earned $216 million worldwide. 
Also out of the top ten this week are Nicholas Sparks' "Safe Haven" and teen film "21 and Over." 
Here are this week's winners and losers in Hollywood: 
10. After dipping four spots, The Rock's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=snitch.htm">Snitch</a>" just makes it into the top ten this week earning $1.9 million. The Lionsgate film has now earned $40.3 million after five weekends. 
9. "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=identitythief.htm">Identity Thief</a>" featuring Melissa McCarthy also fell four spots with $2.5 million in its seventh weekend. Universal's comedy has managed to bring in $135.9 million worldwide earning the majority of its money at the domestic box office. 
8. "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=jackthegiantkiller.htm">Jack the Giant Slayer</a>" took a tumble with three new films out earning just under $3 million. Now out for a month, the fairytale-inspired movie featuring Ewan McGregor has earned $119.6 million worldwide. The film is estimated to have cost Warner Bros. $195 million to produce. 
7. Steve Carell's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=burtwonderstone.htm">The Incredible Burt Wonderstone</a>" drops 58 percent in week two earning $4.3 million. The film, which cost an estimated $30 million to produce, has earned $17.4 million since its debut. 
6. After debuting successfully in three theaters last weekend, "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=springbreakers.htm">Spring Breakers</a>" opens in more than 1,110 theaters bringing in $5 million The indie film with James Franco and Selena Gomez had a low budget estimated at $2 million. 
5. Tina Fey and Paul Rudd's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=admission.htm">Admission</a>" didn't get a warm welcome in theaters. The film, with an estimated budget of $13 million earned $6.4 million. 
4. Halle Berry's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=call2013.htm">The Call</a>" drops two spots earning $8.7 million in week two. The TriStar film has now grossed $30.9 million. 
3. "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&amp;id=oz.htm">Oz the Great and Powerful"</a> moves down two spots in week three with $22 million. Disney's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekly&amp;id=aliceinwonderland10.htm">Alice in Wonderland</a>" performed similarly in week four at theaters back in 2010. "Oz" is performing just as well overseas as it is at home, earning $356.4 million worldwide. 
2. "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=olympushasfallen.htm">Olympus Has Fallen</a>" has secured director Anton Fuqua's largest opening yet with $30.5 million. Fuqua previously made "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=trainingday.htm" target="_blank">Training Day</a>" which debuted at $22.6 million. After two romance flops in 2012, the Gerard Butler White House action thriller solidifies the actor's genre in theaters. 
1. DreamWorks Animation's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=croods.htm">The Croods</a>" managed to bring in $44.7 million to take the box office this weekend. The film's performance all but proved that the studio's last film, "The Rise of the Guardians" low gross was an anomaly. "The Croods" earnings came in slightly higher than 2010's March hit "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=howtotrainyourdragon.htm">How to Train Your Dragon</a>" ($46 million) and just under "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/showdowns/chart/?id=dreamworksmarch.htm">Megamind</a>" ($46 million).
