India's investment ecosystem is undergoing a seismic shift, with index investing gaining unprecedented traction among investors, according to a report by Motilal Oswal. The younger generation, including Gen Z and Millennials, shows a stronger inclination towards index funds as compared to older investors. They also prefer index funds over ETFs for better returns and liquidity. A recent report by Axis AMC also highlighted the growing appetite for ETFs, which witnessed net sales of Rs 15,403 crore in October 2024. While 46% of younger investors favor index funds, only 35% of Gen X and Boomers do so. Millennials and Gen X investors also have a keen interest in factor or smart beta funds, reflecting their appetite for innovative, albeit aggressive investment strategies. Passive funds have become a core component of investor portfolios, with 80% of investors increasing their allocation to these funds in 2024, compared to 53% last year. The Axis report echoed similar sentiments, noting that net sales in the passive category inched up to Rs 8,025 crore in October 2024. The combined assets under management (AUM) of passive funds have surged from Rs 7 lakh crore in September 2023 to over Rs 11 lakh crore by September 2024—a 1.5x growth in just one year. The survey also noted a growing popularity of ETFs, with 57% of respondents investing in them, up from 41% in 2023. Of these, 26% invest solely in ETFs, while 31% have diversified between ETFs and index funds. This rising preference is matched by a commitment to long-term investment. A significant 81% of investors plan to hold their passive investments for over three years, highlighting sustained confidence in the growth potential of these funds. Sectoral indices like Nifty IT and Nifty Bank dominate as the top choice for passive fund investors, selected by 67% of respondents. Benchmark indices such as the Nifty 50 and Nifty 500 follow closely, preferred by 61% of investors. A recent, similar report by stock broker Angel One also throws a spotlight on how young India plans and prefers mutual funds when it comes to savings and investments. The report, titled "Young Indians' Saving Habits Outlook 2024," compiled by Fin One, stated that 45% of respondents aged 22-35 have made it a point to save up some of their savings in mutual funds. A year ago, this figure stood at just 32%. Most of these investors make their way into mutual funds via SIPs, or systematic investment plans. 52% of respondents in the age cohort of 22-35 are now using SIPs to invest in mutual funds, up from 44% in the previous year. As for what was the driving factor behind beginning their investment journey, 42% underlined the past performance of funds, while 38% noted that advice from financial advisors remained a key consideration. 38% of young Indians are now increasingly focusing on building an emergency corpus, compared to 28% the year before. This shift underscores the drastic change in financial sensibilities brought forth by the pandemic and the consequent desire for greater financial resilience. In fact, approximately 4 out of every 5 surveyed investors maintained a dedicated, separate savings account. Out of the 1,650 individuals studied under the FinOne survey, a staggering majority made their first foray into the stock market in their early twenties. Nearly 2 in every 5 investors pick stock as their preferred choice of investment, followed by mutual funds and then savings bank accounts. While 45% of those surveyed picked stocks as their chosen investment avenue, 20% preferred mutual funds, and 15% wanted to keep their money in a savings bank account.

The upcoming budget ensures that every individual in our diverse population, from the youngest to the oldest, can access essential health services, including specialised care." The Union Budget 2024 will be tabled on July 23 by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. With this, she will become the first Finance Minister to deliver seven consecutive budgets, surpassing Morarji Desai. She presented the interim budget on February 1 of this year.

Global energy outlook will shift once Trump returns to White House: Report

The Congress on Wednesday said the <keyword id="19900449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government" source="keywords">government</keyword>'s proposal of giving individuals the option to choose between two tax rates for long-term capital gains (<keyword id="6357448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LTCG" source="Orion">LTCG</keyword>) tax on properties is not enough. It should also allow <keyword id="21006654" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="indexation-benefits" source="keywords">indexation benefits</keyword> for other forms of <keyword id="20044873" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="savings" source="keywords">savings</keyword> such as <keyword id="19905382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stocks" source="keywords">stocks</keyword> and <keyword id="19975805" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fixed-deposits" source="keywords">fixed deposits</keyword>. Professionals' Congress Chairman Praveen Chakravarty accused the government of "betraying" the middle and salaried class in the Union Budget through the removal of indexation and higher taxes on their savings and <keyword id="22703183" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment-gains" source="keywords">investment gains</keyword>. "On 23rd July, Finance Minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> presented the government's budget in Parliament. We welcomed certain aspects but we strongly opposed many parts of the budget. Among other things, we strongly opposed what the finance did to the middle class and salaried professionals, he said. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi in his response to the Budget in Parliament categorically said that this was a "betrayal of the middle class" through removal of indexation and higher taxes on their savings and investment gains, Chakravarty pointed out. "He (Gandhi) had promised to fight for the middle class on this issue. This issue affected nearly 7 crore Indians who filed income taxes, owned or aspire to own a home and invest their savings. In this budget, effectively, through removal of indexation and increase in capital gains taxes, the taxes of salaried professionals through investment gains went up dramatically," he said. Already, the middle class and the salaried professionals are bearing the brunt of taxation under the Modi government because for the first time in India, total income taxes paid by middle class individuals are higher than taxes paid by rich corporates, Chakravarty said. There were huge protests on social media and in business events in cities like Mumbai where professionals came out spontaneously to protest, he said. Yesterday, the government of India announced a rollback of indexation of property gains by giving individuals the option to continue with indexation benefits. We welcome this. This is a victory to the 7 crore people that file income tax," he said. "But this is not enough. We urge the government to allow indexation benefits for other forms of savings too such as stocks, debt, fixed deposits and so on," Chakravarty asserted. More importantly, this is a testament to middle class power and the power of democracy, he said. "When professionals come together and raise their voice, it will be heard. This is also proof of what a strong Opposition and a concerted and united effort can achieve for the people of India. The AIPC will continue to raise issues that impact the middle class working professionals," Chakravarty said. His remarks come a day after the government proposed significant relief for individuals who bought houses before July 23, 2024, by giving them the option to choose between two tax rates for long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax. The Budget 2024-25 had proposed to lower the LTCG from 20% to 12.5% but removed the indexation benefits. The new rates have come into effect from July 23, 2024. The indexation benefit allowed the taxpayers to compute gains arising out of the sale of capital assets after adjusting for inflation. The tax experts had said that the proposed changes in the Budget would raise the LTCG tax burden. As per the amendments to Finance Bill, 2024, circulated to the Lok Sabha members on Tuesday, individuals or HuF who bought houses before July 23, 2024, can compute his/her taxes under the new scheme (@12.5% without indexation) and old scheme (@20% with indexation) and pay such tax which is lower of the two. After the Budget presentation, the Income Tax department said that 'substantial tax savings' are expected for a vast majority of taxpayers due to a reduction in the long-term capital gains tax (LTCG) rate in the real estate sector. As per the changes brought in the 2024-25 Budget, the government has retained the indexation benefit for the taxpayers on properties bought or inherited before 2001.

We recommend gold as a strategic hedge within a diversified portfolio, suggesting a 5% allocation to the precious metal". Alekh Yadav, Head of Investment Products at Sanctum Wealth, also advises making some allocation to gold in your portfolio, since gold has a negative correlation with equities; whenever equity markets correct, gold typically performs better. Given that US markets are currently at elevated valuations, gold can serve as a hedge against potential global equity corrections, he explains. "In conclusion, we believe that some allocation to gold, even at current levels, makes sense as a hedge against global risks", he continues. As a thumb rule, you should always have anywhere between 5-10% allocation to gold via digital gold, gold bonds, exchange traded funds (ETFs), sovereign gold bonds (SGBs) etc., since it serves as an effective hedge against inflation, and declining yields. Note that your allocation to gold should not be arbitrary or as a lumpsum, but rather in sync with your overall financial goals, and also, should be increased gradually, via SIPs. However, during prevailing economic conditions, increasing your investments in gold might not be a bad idea as well. But remember to consult with your financial planner over this. Over-investing in gold is also not advisable, since the asset class does not generate high-returns, which means a significant potion of your money could be stuck in a non-yield generating asset, when it could have been in equities or other assets, which generate comparatively more returns.

He said the domestic economy and the capital market are in a celebratory mood at a time when the nation is also going through a festive period. Modi underlined that the government is making all necessary changes on the policy level to assist the fintech sector and gave examples of doing away with Angel Tax, allocating Rs 1 lakh crore to encourage research and innovation in the country and implementing the Digital Personal Data Protection Act. He said that fintech has made access to credit easy and inclusive, and gave the example of PM SVANidhi scheme that has enabled street vendors to avail collateral-free loans and further expand their business with the help of digital transactions. "Sustainable <keyword id="19900794" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-growth" source="keywords">economic growth</keyword> is India's priority today," he said and emphasised that the government is creating robust, transparent and efficient systems to strengthen financial markets with advanced technologies and regulatory frameworks. Frontdesk CEO Jesse DePinto apparently told employees that the company would be "filing for a state receivership, an alternative to bankruptcy". The startup was yet to comment on the report. Founded in 2017, the startup managed more than 1,000 furnished apartments across the US. The startup aimed to raise fresh capital but failed in its attempt. Tech companies, including startups, around the world fired more than 425,000 employees in the last two years, with more than 36,000 employees being sacked in India in the same time period. Citing the global macroeconomic conditions, Big Tech firms and startups across the spectrum have sacked employees, and layoffs continue to happen. Union Budget 2024-25 key highlights: Angel tax to be scraped

"The banking sector, which has shown relative strength but stalled at key levels, will be crucial in determining the market’s next move. Traders should keep a close eye on this sector for guidance. Notably, the week saw improved market breadth with several individual stocks posting notable gains. However, a selective approach remains essential in this volatile environment", continued Bhosale. The immediate focus is on the core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) data due later in the day to assess the Fed's policy stance ahead of the next rate decision on Nov 7. Vinay Bansal, CEO and founder of IPV, discovered some obvious pain points that both investors and startup founders faced for the smallest of funding rounds. While the process was tedious for the founders, lack of clarity was a big issue for angel investors. IPV set out to resolve all three issues with its own unique propositions. “We decided to solve these problems and started investing in a few startups with a sharp focus so that the founders could grow. Some of these startups include the likes of Milk Basket and Fitso that went on to become very successful.” IPV decided to do things differently to improve the success rate of startups in India, which also improved returns for investors. In less than four years, IPV has invested in 140 companies and the IRRs (internal rate of returns) are significantly higher compared to many others. India has spawned many unicorns in the last three years, as the pandemic led to innovative models to solve problems thrown up by the lockdowns. India saw 44 unicorns emerge in 2021 and the trend continues in 2022, albeit at a slower pace. Interestingly, the startup bug is not just restricted to the big cities. Today, there’s a startup in each of the 625 districts of India and 50% of these come from Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns. IPV is one of the few players that has had its eyes on such players since 2020. Nearly 10% of its portfolio companies come from the hinterland. Born in 2019, this platform has funded some very interesting startups that nobody was willing to bet on – these were from India’s Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, but were solving problems that are unique to the country’s hinterland. The venture platform is agnostic to sector, stage and geography in which the startup is in. What matters to IPV is the quality of the founder, idea and valuation. “Great people can come from anywhere and we took bets on startups nobody was betting on back in 2020. We go by great ideas that can come from anywhere, which is why we funded BluSmart in Ahmedabad and Multibhashi from Jaipur. These founders are sharp, smart and hardworking to their core,” explains Bansal. Thanks to ventures like IPV, television shows like Shark Tank and a media blitzkrieg are helping more startups in Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns. What also makes IPV unique is that its model of raising capital is more broad-based, which is why its investments are not held hostage by any funding winter or moves made by the Federal Reserve. “We want to continue to democratise investments for average Indians who have a ticket size of ₹5 lakh.” The platform has 7,295 investors on its platform and it continues to grow. “The way we set ourselves up was to be different from others. We were able to fund even during the pandemic and all these investments are between Series B and D today. We went against the market in 2021 and started exiting from our investments. We don’t work on the dry powder concept as we get funds from salaried investors. Over the last couple of months we have cut million dollar cheques. Winters are good for us as we get access to good companies at better valuations. We have to overcome our fear of investing when others are not,” says Bansal. The average ticket size that the angel investors cut out each year ranges between ₹5-7 lakh. IPV’s investors come from not just India but also from other countries. To invest, all that the angel investors need to do is fill a form and get started. The process is equally easy for startups that need funding. Inflection Point Ventures’ focus on great founders takes it to Tier 2 & 3 towns

New Delhi, The Finance Ministry has notified 21 countries, including the US, UK and France, from where non-resident investment in unlisted Indian startups will not attract angel tax. The list, however, excludes investment from countries like Singapore, Netherlands and <keyword id="56022" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mauritius" source="Orion">Mauritius</keyword>. The government had in the <keyword id="6358021" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="budget" source="Orion">Budget</keyword> brought overseas investment in unlisted closely held companies, except DPIIT recognised startups, under the Angel Tax net. Following that, the startup and venture capital industry sought exemption for certain overseas investor classes. The <keyword id="121964" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-board-of-direct-taxes" source="Orion">Central Board of Direct Taxes</keyword> (<keyword id="128665" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="cbdt" source="Orion">CBDT</keyword>) on May 24 notified classes of investors who would not come under the Angel Tax provision. Excluded entities include those registered with <keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sebi" source="Orion">Sebi</keyword> as Category-I FPI, Endowment Funds, <keyword id="148003" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pension-funds" source="Orion">Pension Funds</keyword> and broad-based pooled investment vehicles, which are residents of 21 specified nations, including the US, UK, Australia, Germany and Spain, as per the notification. The other nations mentioned in the notification are Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Israel, Italy, Iceland, Japan, Korea, Russia, Norway, New Zealand and Sweden. The CBDT notification comes into effect on April 1. Nangia Andersen India Chairman Rakesh Nangia said by explicitly mentioning this list of countries, the government aims to attract more foreign investment (FDI) into India from countries that have robust regulatory frameworks. "Surprisingly, countries such as Singapore, Ireland, Netherlands, Mauritius etc from where the majority of inbound FDI is channelised into India, do not find a mention in this notification," Nangia said. Stakeholders may still have to hold their horses on a formal notification on the valuation guidelines as rules on the same are proposed to be released after a stakeholder consultation process, he added. The CBDT is expected to come out with valuation guidelines for valuing non-resident investment in unrecognised startups for the purpose of levying income tax. Under the existing norms, only investments by domestic investors or residents in closely held companies were taxed over and above the fair market value. This was commonly referred to as an angel tax. The Finance Act, 2023, has said that such investments over and above the FMV will be taxed irrespective of whether the investor is a resident or non-resident. Post the amendments proposed in the Finance Bill, concerns have been raised over the methodology of calculation of fair market value under two different laws.
