Former Representative Mark Meadows took Mulvaney's role in the White House. Mulvaney now serves as a special government employee and plans to continue in the role while founding Exegis, a source familiar with the matter told <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2020/08/28/mick-mulvaney-hedge-fund-404643?nname=playbook&amp;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&amp;nrid=00000164-0375-dae3-ade4-4f7da1e00000&amp;nlid=630318;nlid=630318">Politico</a>.</p><p>The former chief of staff highlighted recent market rallies as backing up his argument that fundamentals now play second fiddle to Washington. Stimulus progress and positive coronavirus drug news have repeatedly pushed major equity indexes higher in recent weeks despite continued economic pain, he said.</p><p>That trend will surely continue, and those with experience in government will know how to best position themselves with respect to future legislation and regulation, Mulvaney added.</p><p>"Not a lot of folks get it. Not a lot of folks understand, OK, this person has hired this staffer to run this subcommittee, what is that going to mean for what kinds of legislation you're seeing come out?" he said.</p><p>Mulvaney and Wessel began raising capital for the fund about a month ago, Wessel said on the podcast. The two aim to open the fund on January 1, and will do so whether Trump or Vice President Joe Biden wins November's presidential election.</p><p>Other government players moved into the market recently as stocks rebounded from their virus-induced lows. Former House Speaker Paul Ryan is <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/paul-ryan-spac-chairman-blank-check-300-million-ipo-acquisition-2020-8-1029521755">set to hop on the "blank-check" bandwagon</a> with the special-purpose acquisition company Executive Network Partnering, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/former-house-speaker-paul-ryan-starts-blank-check-company-11597934227">The Wall Street Journal</a> reported on August 20. Ryan will serve as the firm's chairman. Former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney to open hedge fund focused on financial stocks

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>I'm sitting in a WeWork office in San Francisco that looks torn from a West Elm catalog, talking with Michael Brandt <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-biohacking-wefast-2016-8">about Nootrobox</a>, a subscription service for "smart drugs," or cognitive-enhancement supplements.</p><p>But I can't stop admiring his shoes - a pair of fuzzy gray sneakers.</p><p>"They're really awesome. I don't wear socks anymore," Brandt, a cofounder of Nootrobox, says as he flexes his feet to show off his treads. "'Cause it's just like wearing a sock."</p><p>Allbirds' debut sneaker, the $95 "Wool Runner," has been called <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/allbirds-sneakers-review-2016-5/#allbirds-uses-wool-from-new-zealand-and-a-mill-outside-milan-italy-the-result-is-an-incredibly-comfortable-fit-which-stretches-out-a-bit-after-a-few-days-you-want-the-shoes-to-be-tight-when-you-first-try-them-on-1">the world's most comfortable shoe</a> by venture capitalists and startup founders - as well as the company itself.</p><p>Tim Brown was playing professional soccer in New Zealand when he dreamt up the idea for a wool sneaker. Allbirds uses merino wool from Brown's home country that's processed in Milan, Italy. The result is a shoe so incredibly comfortable, they're like slippers made of clouds.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>If you choose to wear them without socks like Brandt, Wool Runners can be tossed into the washing machine on a wool cycle (delicate or hand wash cycles with cold water work, too) for easy cleaning.</p><p>Brandt isn't the only Silicon Valley techie hopping on the Allbirds bandwagon.</p><p><a href="https://twitter.com/lizwessel">Liz Wessel</a>, CEO and cofounder of WayUp, a<span> startup that connects college students with local job opportunities and internships, also got pretty excited about her pair of Wool Runners.</span></p><p><div></div></p><p>But it's venture capitalists who are singing Allbirds' praises the most.</p><p><a href="https://twitter.com/brettrjackson">Brett Jackson</a> worked for four years at Crocs, the titan of comfort footwear, before becoming managing director of venture firm v1.vc. He's now an investor in Allbirds.</p><p><div></div></p><p><a href="https://twitter.com/kylebrussell">Kyle Russell</a>, a deal partner at venture firm Andreessen Horowitz, is also a fan.</p><p><div>    </div></p><p>Venture capitalists on the East Coast are catching wind of the shoes. Here's a tweet from <a href="https://twitter.com/mitchellcandrew">Andrew Mitchell</a>, founder of the New York-based venture firm Brand Foundry Ventures.</p><p><div></div></p><p>And <a href="https://twitter.com/henrylmcnamara">Henry McNamara</a>, a general partner at Great Oaks venture firm, liked Allbirds enough to invest, as well. Silicon Valley is obsessed with these wool sneakers that claim to be the 'most comfortable in the world'

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Tom Szczerbowski/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Chuck Pagano will be back with the Colts in 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div>After a slate of head coaching jobs opened up in the last two days, the Indianapolis Colts came up with one of the biggest surprises of the end of the NFL regular season.</p><p>Late Monday night, the Colts announced they agreed to a four-year contract extension with head coach Chuck Pagano, <a href="http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000617775/article/colts-chuck-pagano-agree-on-contract-extension">according to NFL.com's Chris Wesseling</a>.</p><p>The move comes as a surprise after the Colts went 8-8 and missed the playoffs.</p><p>Similarly, early in the year there were <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/indianapolis-colts-problems-2015-9">reports of tension among Pagano and the Colts front office</a>. The Colts declined to give Pagano a contract extension before this season, and there were reports that Pagano wanted more personnel control while the Colts front office was losing faith in his ability to bring the Colts to a next level.</p><p>However, despite all that, it seems Pagano and the Colts were able to work through their differences.</p><p>Surprisingly, the Colts held together after the early-season drama, and the absence of Andrew Luck for nine games this season surely helped Pagano's case. Colts sign coach Chuck Pagano to surprising contract extension

<p><span>Andrew Chen joined Uber back in 2015 during what he calls "happier times." The company was still a small startup, and his offer letter was signed on a sticky note. He even took a selfie of the moment for posterity. </span></p><p><span>Chen is the head of rider growth at Uber, and one of the early Uber employees upset by Kalanick's resignation. He and other Uber employees have taken to social media to express their gratitude and say their goodbyes to their former CEO. </span></p><p><span>Despite the controversy surrounding Kalanick (or, as his employees call him, TK), the former CEO still has a vocal fan club at Uber, and they want him back. Axios <a href="https://www.axios.com/over-1-000-uber-employees-ask-for-travis-kalanick-to-return-2446313529.html">published a letter</a> this morning from Uber employees petitioning for Kalanick to return in an operational role. Uber employees are conflicted over Travis Kalanick's resignation - over 1,000 have petitioned for his return

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://class.coursera.org/financialmarkets-001/lecture">Yale/Coursera</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Yale economist and Nobel laureate Robert Shiller says America should start preparing for a day when inequality is much worse than it is now.</p>
<p><a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304256404579451513719842826">In a new interview with David Wessel</a>, who <a href="https://twitter.com/davidmwessel">remains a contributor at the Wall Street Journal</a> despite having left for a position at the Brookings Institution, Shiller says the wealthiest of the wealthy must begin redistributing their income much more aggressively.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>We should start preparing for a day, maybe 10 or 20 years in the future, when inequality may be much worse. We don't yet know whether it's going to be worse. We should have a contingency plan now. The simple idea I have is raising the taxes on the rich, which sounds like the most politically inexpedient move right now, but the nice thing is that when you talk to people about risks of the distant future, they are more idealistic and more sharing in their attitudes.</span></p>
<p><span>If higher tax rates do prove unfeasible, Shiller advocates expanding the scope of<span> charitable deductions, as well as </span>capping how many more billions existing billionaires can make. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Y</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">ou'll still be a billionaire, so what?" he says, calling out "s</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">elfish people at the top who don't want to give it away."</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> You could turn into a </span><a href="http://topics.wsj.com/person/G/Bill-Gates/685" data-ls-seen="1">Bill Gates</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> or an Andrew Carnegie. I think that's OK. Instead of just taxing people-saying, "We're just taking the money, and you'll go to jail if you don't turn it over"-we can find a better way.</span></p>
<p>In the rest of the interview, Shiller explains why certain people, including himself, are capable of picking stocks, why bubbles may prove useful in the long-run, and whether you should be investing in housing.</p>

SHILLER: We Should Start Preparing For A Day When Inequality May Be Much Worse Than It Is Now

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Today is prestigious startup incubator <a href="https://www.ycombinator.com/">Y Combinator's</a> Demo Day for its Winter 2015 class. </p><p>Every year, Y Combinator has two funding cycles - one goes from January through March, and the other is from June through August.</p><p>At the end of each of these funding cycles, participating startups pitch their ideas at Demo Day to potential investors who want to fund the next big thing in tech.</p><p>Y Combinator provides funding to startups and perhaps even more importantly, gives visibility to startups to help them catch the eye of top Silicon Valley investors. Jackson <a href="http://startupljackson.com/post/114347589480/open-letter-to-yc-founders-on-fundraising">posted an open letter to YC founders</a> in advance of Demo Day.</p><p>He offers a few pieces of advice to founders of startups that are about to pitch their companies to an audience that includes potential investors: Know what your Series A round needs to look like, and raise the right-sized round. Founders should vet VCs like they're going to be employees. Have a backup plan. Don't optimize for ego.</p><p>"<span>You're about to raise the most important money your company will ever take," he says. "It has the more potential than any other financing to kill your company if done poorly. <p>"The question is often whether it's possible for anyone to pick stocks, and I think it is. It's a competitive game. It's like some people can play in a chess tournament really well, but I'm not recommending you go into a chess tournament if you are not trained in that, or you will lose. So for most people, trying to pick among major investments might be a mistake because it's an overpopulated market. It's hard. You have to be realistic about how savvy you are. But if you are thinking about buying real estate and renting it out, fixing it up and selling it, that's the kind of market that's less populated by experts. And for someone who knows the town, that's doing business, I'm not going to tell someone not to do that."</p>

<p>A survey of high net worth individuals under the age of 40, by SEI Investments Co., Scorpio Partnership, and NPG Wealth Management, showed that they place more importance on human factors. "Understanding of individual needs, level of experience, and market knowledge," each received a score of 65 out of 100, reports Joyce Hanson at Investment News. They attached less importance to digital technologies. "The most significant study result to me is that you just can't replace the importance of human contact in the advisory experience," Al Chiaradonna, of the SEI Wealth Platform for North America told Hanson.</p>

<p>Hedge funds with $100-$499 million in assets under management (AUM) and $500-$999 million in AUM have had 12-month average returns of 13.79% and 13.71% respectively. These funds beat bigger hedge funds in 12-month average returns in 2013, according to a report by Preqin. Meanwhile, hedge funds with $1-$5 billion in AUM had 12-month average returns of 12.08%. </p>
<p>"As funds become larger, the distribution of returns among the best performing funds moves towards the lower end of the return spectrum," Amy Bensted, Preqin's Head of Hedge Fund Products said in the report. </p>
<p>"The size range $500-999mn had the lowest proportion of funds suffering a loss in 2013, and the longer term return and volatility characteristics of these funds are similar to funds with assets of more than $1bn. Therefore, those investors which are looking to move away from investing in just the largest funds, but without taking on too much volatility, may choose to look towards investing in those funds with more than $500mn in assets."<strong><br /></strong></p>

<p>But most of these are just passing fads that only serve to sap your time and drain your bank account.</p>
<p>We've put together a list of some of the worst <keyword id="6354750" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> trends that still persist today.</p>
<h3 class="slide-title">Coconut Water</h3>
<p>Coconut water may be nature's version of Gatorade, but some brands have already caught fire for over-hyping the nutrient content. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rihannas-favorite-coconut-water-will-pay-10m-to-settle-suit-over-super-hydrating-claims-2012-2#ixzz1sQd2Pj36" target="_blank">Vita Coco agreed to settle</a> a $10 million class action lawsuit over an independent study that showed the drinks didn't pack near as many electrolytes as advertisements implied.</p>
<p>Plus, some coconut water products are also loaded with added sugar. Instead, pick up your own young green coconuts on the cheap from an Asian produce market. Just <a href="http://southeastasianfood.about.com/od/dessertsfruitsanddrinks/ss/OpenYoungCoco_2.htm" target="_blank">crack them open with a cleaver</a>, and pop in a straw. </p>
<h3>All-Natural Foods</h3>
<p><a href="http://health.yahoo.net/experts/eatthis/8-food-trends-2011-will-make-you-fat-or-keep-you-skinny-2012" target="_blank">More Americans</a> may be going au naturel, but what are you really paying for?</p>
<p>There's no clear-cut regulation on what makes food "natural," which means just about any company can slap that label on its packages, add a fancy "green" design, and jack up the price.</p>
<p>Says Andrew Schrage of <a href="http://www.moneycrashers.com/" target="_blank">MoneyCrashers</a>: "Before buying any food that is touted as being 'all natural,' take a look at the ingredient list before you check out. Keep in mind that butter and salt are indeed natural ingredients. So stocking up on natural foods may not achieve anything other than increasing your grocery bill." (Not to mention, your waistline.)</p>
<h3 class="slide-title">Weight-Loss Wardrobes</h3>
<p>When it comes to ridiculous-looking toning shoes and clothing designed to help shed pounds faster, you might want to hold off. </p>
<p>Reebok's already paid $25 million to consumers for allegedly over-marketing the <span>weight loss power</span> of its toning shoes. And <a href="http://www.shape.com/latest-news-trends/toning-clothing-does-it-really-boost-calorie-burn" target="_blank">the one study</a> that seems to support the claim that tight-fitting threads help burn more calories only involved about 15 participants.</p>
<p>"I think there are much simpler and less expensive ways the average person can bump up calorie burn and build strength," says <a href="http://www.shape.com/latest-news-trends/toning-clothing-does-it-really-boost-calorie-burn" target="_blank">Shape.com's Liz Neporent</a>. "For instance, <a href="http://www.shape.com/latest-news-trends/toning-clothing-does-it-really-boost-calorie-burn#" class="kLink"><span><span class="kLink">interval </span><span class="kLink">training</span></span></a> and hill work. These workouts certainly have the science behind them."</p>
<h3 class="slide-title">Hormone Injections</h3>
<p>People really will do anything to shed pounds, even if it means injecting themselves with hormones made from a woman's placenta.</p>
<p>The FDA ordered companies to stop selling HCG (a protein made in the placenta and passed through pregnant women's urine) after it was used in conjunction with low-calorie <keyword id="6358230" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="diet">diet</keyword> regimens. A <a href="http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=hcg&amp;hl=en&amp;prmd=imvns&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;tbm=shop&amp;cid=881720153146005695&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=dN-NT9fON8Xz0gHYvM2dDw&amp;ved=0CHsQ8wIwBQ" target="_blank">40-day kit</a> sells for $120, but the hormone's only been approved for use in fertility treatments.</p>
<p>Per the <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hcg-diet/an02091" target="_blank">MayoClinic</a>: "HCG is not approved for over-the-counter use, nor has it been proved to work for weight loss. Companies that sell over-the-counter HCG weight-loss products are breaking the law."</p>
<h3 class="slide-title">Detox Diets</h3>
<p class="source">Here's a trend that makes nutritionists' blood boil: the idea that people can purge their bodies of toxins by consuming different variations of liquid diets. </p>
<p>From the cabbage soup plan to the <a href="http://www.shape.com/celebrities/celebrity-photos/detox-and-cleanse-diets-should-you-try-these-popular-celeb-diets?page=3" target="_blank">infamous "Master Cleanse</a>," there's hardly any science to back them up, says <a href="http://www.essentialnutritionforyou.com/" target="_blank">Essential Nutrition for You</a>'s Rania Batayneh.</p>
<p>"What consumers need to know is that your body naturally detoxifies itself through our lungs, skin, and kidneys," she said. "Sweat it out, breathe it out, and eliminate. Eating a clean diet daily will give you the feeling you are looking forward to at the end of your depriving cleanse, so get started. Besides, cleanses are unnatural and typically based on eliminating food groups and/or foods altogether." <strong> </strong></p>
<h3 class="slide-title">Gluten-free Diets</h3>
<p>Batayneh calls this one of the worst <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dont-get-suckered-into-weight-loss-scams-2011-12" target="_blank">weight-loss myths</a> out there and another attempt to play on the low-carb fad sparked by the Atkin's diet. </p>
<p>"A gluten-free diet does not necessarily mean a low-carb diet," she says. "A person who eats gluten-free can ingest plenty of carbohydrates from gluten-free breads, pastas, cereals, and baked goods, as well as vegetables, fruits, beans, and legumes."</p>
<p>Gluten-free lifestyles have been proven to ease symptoms of Autism in children and, obviously, are vital to anyone with a gluten allergy. But "if you don't have a medical reason for following a gluten-free diet, there's probably no benefit," <a href="http://www.eatingwell.com/nutrition_health/nutrition_news_information/the_13_biggest_nutrition_and_food_myths_busted?page=14" target="_blank">says Tricia Thompson, R.D.</a>, founder of <a href="http://www.glutenfreedietitian.com/" target="_blank">glutenfreedietitian.com</a>.</p>
<h3>Snack Packs</h3>
<p class="source">Weight loss has much to do with portion control, but those helpful little 100-calorie snack <span>pack</span>s are nothing but a big budget suck.</p>
<p>"We have portion distortion in this nation, and even though I like that [100-calorie packs] are pre-portioned, that can be a more expensive option," Batayneh says.</p>
<p>Instead, keep a measuring cup in your desk drawer to scoop out perfect portions of whatever you're munching on at work (almonds, trail mix, etc.) rather than paying more for packaging. </p>
<h3 class="slide-title">Acai Berries</h3>
<p class="source">There are <em>no clinical studies</em> that support claims that antioxidants in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/this-is-the-scam-that-never-ends-yes-it-goes-on-and-on-my-friends-2012-1" target="_blank">Acai berries will make you live longer</a>, help you fly, smooth your crow's feet, or anything else.</p>
<p>"We've had waves of costly 'super juices' in the marketplace that were nothing more than fruit juice," says clinical nutritionist <a href="http://stellametsovas.com/" target="_blank">Stella Metsovas</a>. "Testing chemical properties in a laboratory is completely different once the product is pasteurized. There is no possibility of processing a super-fruit to compete with the natural form (i.e. a handful of berries)." </p>
<p>The Acai berry's popularity in the U.S. spawned a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/this-is-the-scam-that-never-ends-yes-it-goes-on-and-on-my-friends-2012-1" target="_blank">new wave of consumer scams</a> involving "free trial offers" for smoothies, juices, and other products.</p>
<h3 class="slide-title">Diet Drinks</h3>
<p class="source">Not only will they destroy your teeth, but a <a href="http://ww2.aievolution.com/ada1101/index.cfm?do=abs.viewAbs&amp;abs=10061">study by the American Diabetes Association</a> pretty much proved diet soda drinkers were <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/diet-soda-makes-you-fat-2011-6" target="_blank">packing on pounds</a>, not shedding them.  </p>
<p>Zero-calorie sodas <a href="http://articles.businessinsider.com/2011-06-29/news/30010277_1_diet-soda-weight-gain-aspartame#ixzz1sQb33dSJ" target="_blank">have also been linked</a> to a slew of nasty diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.</p>
