However, the listed niche omni-channel beauty retailer is not too worried. “We have not seen any impact of it yet. A majority of our business comes from repeat customers. It’s a popular perception that we are the first movers in this area. We are not. Flipkart, Purplle have all been doing this business before us. But we now have a large share of the customer base,” Anchit Nayar, the CEO of beauty and e-commerce of Nykaa told reporters speaking on the sidelines of the company’s Nykaaland event in Mumbai. Nayar also added that he believes in the India consumption story — with a growing number of middle and high income households, urbanization and digitalization of the beauty business. Their average customer spends around $80, whereas the average spend for an India is as low as $15 — he elaborated. The founder of Nykaa, <keyword id="6379793" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="falguni-nayar" source="Orion">Falguni Nayar</keyword>, CEO of Nykaa too believes that the trend of growing premiumization – from mass to masstige products, from masstige to premium; will continue. It will also be less affected by inflation. “Once consumers use premium products and see that they address concerns better, it’s a habit that will be tough to shake off,” Falguni Nayar told Business Insider India on the sidelines of the event. Awareness and availability of beauty Anchit Nayar also added that awareness, education and availability are the barriers for the growth of the sector — and the company is solving them. The company is holding its first ever beauty event between November 4-5, in collaboration with BookMyShow.com. Apart from showcasing over 80 iconic international and Indian beauty brands and their extensive product ranges in the exhibition, the event include entertainment with bands playing live music, food and other forms of games. Curated to look like a wonderworld, the event also has stalls for pampering and experiences like foot massages, hairdos, beauty courses and more. “It’s our way to bring the world of beauty to consumers. It provides a lot of learning and is very experiential,” Falguni Nayar said. Premium personal care retailer Nykaa is yet unaffected a slowdown in consumption. Nykaa says its customers are much more evolved and choose lifestyle over other expenses. “Nykaa is a slightly more premium realtor for beauty. We do sell a lot of mass brands but our consumers are slightly more evolved so it doesn’t seem to be impacting beauty consumption as of yet. Secondly, beauty as a category is a small luxury. If you are sacrificing some of your large luxuries like maybe you’re putting off buying a car, handbag but beauty is part of your everyday routine it’s essential to your lifestyle. So we are not seeing a dip in demand as yet,” said Anchit Nayar, CEO of Nykaa in conversation with Business Insider. The e-commerce company for beauty, wellness and fashion products has partnered with over 3000 brands and 22 global brands who sell their products on Nykaa’s platform. Six out of 10 products of Nykaa are sold in smaller towns In the same universe where consumer products companies have been struggling to find <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/oats-and-honey-are-some-of-the-health-foods-that-indians-are-buying-less-of/articleshow/92697833.cms">demand for certain non-essential items </a>due to high inflation, Nykaa’s huge portion of sales comes from smaller towns in tier II and tier III cities. Nayar says customer behavior in smaller towns is becoming very similar to those in big cities, all thanks to access to social media. “In Nykaa almost 60% of our gross sales comes from smaller towns -- tier II, tier III and beyond. And what is very interesting to us is that consumers in small towns are exhibiting behavior that is very similar to those in small towns,” said Nayar. “This tells us that now there is universal access to information, a lot of that through social media but platforms like Nykaa where a consumer sitting in a small town in Assam can get access to the same information in a large city like Mumbai. As a result, they have the same aspiration so we are seeing very similar consumption trends across the country,” he added.. Nayar said that popular products sold on Nykaa are of active skincare brands like that of Derma Cosmetics, which says a lot about changing consumer priority towards beauty and wellness. “If I were to just say one or two big trends, one is definitely active ingredients skincare like Derma Cosmetics. I would not name brands but brands that are servicing more pharmacies like skincare brands,” said Nayar. The company is still at the early stages of executing this plan and will take concrete steps in this direction by the end this year, Purplle’s Cofounder and Chief Executive (CEO) Manish Taneja told Business Insider. Purplle — which claims to have an annualised revenue of ₹750 crore — will start a pilot programme by setting up 3-4 stores in one city to test out the traction and the impact it has on the business, before making further plans. The company intends to expand the retail store chain further in the next two-three financial years. “I think offline is a huge market and we will love to be a player in it as well... We would like to have a significantly solid play in the omnichannel or offline model,” Taneja added. Half a billion dollar worth Purplle is now taking the next step to take on Nykaa

The fashion and beauty ecommerce platform will launch its three-day-long IPO this Thursday (October 28), at a price band of ₹1,085-₹1,125 per share. The company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/nykaa-may-launch-its-ipo-next-week-to-raise-a-little-over-5000-crore/articleshow/87198148.cms">reportedly plans to raise </a>₹5,200 crore with this public issue. The nine-year-old startup — launched by Falguni Nayar in 2012 — has elaborate plans on how to use these proceeds. But the most intriguing of all is Nykaa’s aim to expand its offline retail stores, even though they are not a major part of its business. Anchit Nayar, chief executive officer (CEO) of Nykaa’s beauty ecommerce business, highlighted that retail stores currently contribute around 5% gross merchandise value (GMV) of Nykaa’s beauty business. Pre-COVID the number had spiked up to 7-10%. The company currently has 80 stores across 40 cities. “So even though the large majority of our business comes from our online app, we have a very large network of physical stores as well... Also it [retail stores] has allowed us to gain a reputation and also a large [set of] customers interact with the brand Nykaa in a physical way, Nayar said, adding that the omnichannel approach is an important one for them especially in the beauty space. According to Nykaa’s <a href="https://investmentbank.kotak.com/downloads/fsn-e%E2%80%93commerce-ventures-limited-RHP.pdf">red herring prospectus </a>(RHP), the company intends to spend ₹42 crore of the money raised from public issues in setting up retail stores. Overall, the company will spend ₹54 crore for this expense. Nykaa seems to be doing pretty well without retail store intervention Nykaa’s operating revenue grew by ₹670 crore in the financial year 2021, even though the footfall in its retail stores declined by 55-60% in the same time frame. After accessing Nykaa’s financial performance in the April to June quarter of 2021, the company decided to have a “more aggressive expansion on physical store as well as warehousing capacity,” Arvind Agarwal, group chief financial officer (CFO) of the beauty and ecommerce business said. The company will spend another ₹42 crore from its proceeds in setting up warehouses, which act as fulfilment centres for Nykaa’s ecommerce businesses. In total, Nykaa has planned an investment of ₹92 crore for this expense. Nykaa plans to go ‘aggressive’ with its retail store network, a vertical that contributes less than 10% to its revenue

Being stuck at home because of the pandemic further triggered the desire to make life and work easier at home, which resulted in a significant increase in <keyword id="10547863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="shopper-spends">shopper spends</keyword>. People who would otherwise go out to buy groceries and medicines at the pharmacy, turned to e-commerce platforms to get essentials delivered at their doorsteps. 2020 accelerated the e-commerce industry by a decade, revolutionising the way brands operate, run, and grow their businesses, as well as how consumers choose to shop and pay. Indian e-commerce sector is poised to reach US$99 billion by 2024 from US$30 billion in 2019, expanding at a 27% CAGR, with grocery and fashion/apparel likely to be the key drivers of incremental growth.’ The second half of the year, which is the festive season in India, brought cheer for many brands and further pushed the adoption rate of e-commerce. Players like Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, and Snapdeal together sold goods worth $3.1 billion in the first 4.5 days of the festival season sale. Consumers are still hesitant to return to in-store shopping completely and audiences from Tier II and Tier III are also preferring to shop online. Snapdeal saw 70% of its orders come in from Tier II and Tier III during Diwali. The pandemic and lockdown period has brought many learnings for all businesses, and e-commerce has undoubtedly been one of the sectors with the biggest takeaways. As we enter a new year, we reached out to e-commerce platforms to understand what role it would play in 2021.
