This scene looks different from all previous <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/pixar">Pixar</a> films and most other feature-length animated <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword>. This is thanks to legendary cinematographer <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/roger-deakins">Roger Deakins</a>, who worked as a visual consultant on the film. </li><li>After consulting with Deakins, the <keyword id="21778" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="60" keywordseo="animation">animation</keyword> team decided to light several scenes (including this one) with "practical lighting." Practical lighting means lighting a scene by using only the lights that appear in the scene — not adding in any extra lighting off-camera. The practical lighting made the scene feel more realistic and intimate.</li><li>Additionally, the animation team used virtual anamorphic lenses in this sequence to create the perfect ambiance for <keyword id="161299" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pixar">Pixar</keyword>'s first romantic scene. Anamorphic lenses create more separation between the foreground and the background. This visual quality helps emphasize Wall-E and Eve's isolation but also increases the cozy feeling of the scene.</li></ul><p><em>Following is a transcript of the <keyword id="21654" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="video">video</keyword>.</em></p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: Most animated films have vivid color palettes and bright lighting, packing their frames with intense hues and gaudy characters. And that's why I love "Wall-E." Specifically, there's a six-minute sequence that takes place in the dark interior of Wall-E's home that breaks the mold of typical animation. And it's unlike any Pixar scene that came before it. Not only is it Pixar's first ever romantic scene, but it also has spectacular and unique <keyword id="42054" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cinematography">cinematography</keyword>, which elevates the intimacy of the sequence. To understand why this "Wall-E" scene is so special, let's take a look at the lighting of a previous Pixar film, "The Incredibles," which was released four years before "Wall-E."</p><p>Like most animated movies, "The Incredibles" often uses extra lighting that emanates from impossible sources. For example, there's only one light source in this scene, an overhead light. But if you take a look at the children's faces, they are somehow fully illuminated from the front. This extra lighting doesn't make any sense in terms of logic or physics, but it allows for the audience to see the expressions on the children's faces. This impossible lighting isn't really a problem, because the audience doesn't notice unless they're looking for it.</p><p><strong>Teacher</strong>: He moves! Right there!</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: Adding extra lights is extremely prevalent in 3D animation because of how easy it is to create any number of virtual lights with a click of a button. However, in this particular scene in "Wall-E," there's essentially none of this extra lighting. One reason for this, according to "Wall-E" director Andrew Stanton, was that he wanted the film to appear as realistic as possible. After all, the story takes place in the real world. There aren't any talking animals or toys, and it's the only Pixar film to feature live-action footage with actors. In fact, Stanton's desire for realism was so great that he hired legendary cinematographer <keyword id="562438" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Roger-Deakins">Roger Deakins</keyword> as a visual consultant.</p><p>One of Deakins' suggestions was to have the animation team strip out many of the fake lights and instead utilize practical lighting. It's something that he often uses in his live-action movies. Take this scene from "No Country for Old Men." This scene is elegantly lit using practical lighting, the technique of lighting the set using only the light sources that are present in the scene, without adding in any extra lighting from off camera. Deakins cites practical lighting as a great way to make a scene feel more "naturalistic."</p><p>You can see this concept applied to the interior of Wall-E's home, only illuminated by several lines of fairy lights. This particular sequence was lit with practical lighting because it adds realism and the lower lighting is much more intimate, matching the mood of the scene. Because there's very little dialogue in this sequence — or the film, for that matter — most of the information has to be conveyed visually.</p><p>Additionally, by removing a lot of the extra lighting, the animation team could use shadows to its advantage, and there are several shots in this scene that wouldn't have been possible if the scene was brighter. For example, this beautiful shot of the flame reflected in Wall-E's eyes when he is looking at Eve that perfectly conveys his feelings for her. Or at the very end of the scene when Eve shuts down. The bold decision to remove all of the lighting, except for Eve's pulsing green glow, not only led to a great-looking shot, but it also helped to tell the story. Wall-E's life suddenly becomes extremely dark and empty without her.</p><p>While they removed most of the light sources in this scene, the lights that the animators did decide to keep are perfect. The fairy lights emanate a soft glow, making the scene feel warm and cozy. Additionally, these lights look amazing out of focus, the beautiful bokeh dotting the frame with color. Bokeh is the quality of out-of-focus points of light. Soft bokeh creates a passionate feeling, and it often appears in romantic scenes.</p><p>While part of the beauty of the bokeh in "Wall-E" derives from the lights themselves, their stunning appearance wouldn't be possible without this specific type of camera lens that the animators decided to use: an anamorphic lens. Traditional anamorphic lenses differ from standard spherical lenses in that they record increased overall image detail, but with a slight catch. The recorded image is stretched and has to be readjusted in postproduction. This stretching and unstretching results in several abnormalities to the recorded image, such as the oval-shaped bokeh in this scene.</p><p>But oval bokeh is just a small part of the major visual differences created by anamorphic lenses. Take a look at these scenes from "Toy Story 4," which utilize both anamorphic and regular lenses. You can see how the anamorphic lens warps the background and increases the separation between the foreground and the backdrop. It's for this exact reason that director Andrew Stanton said that he chose to use an anamorphic lens. The separation that anamorphic lenses provide helps to emphasize how alone Wall-E is. For all we know, Wall-E could be the only sentient being left on Earth.</p><p>That being said, Stanton also noted that anamorphic lenses can be extremely intimate at the same time, and it's for this reason why anamorphic lenses really shine in this scene, the one that's the most private scene in the film and the most romantic scene that Pixar has ever made. This extremely personal scene uses a number of close-ups, which the anamorphic lenses turn into beautiful portraits, isolating the subtle expressions of Wall-E and Eve. When Wall-E is looking at Eve, everything else in the frame is blurry except for her. He's completely enamored, and she's all he can think about. As with most Pixar films, the amount of detail that the animation team put into the film is what makes "Wall-E" so special.</p><p>In fact, not only did the animators make changes to their lighting and camera lenses, they took it even a step further and changed how their virtual cameras moved. They maneuvered as if they were real cameras, even factoring in the weight of the camera rig in regards to how fast the camera was allowed to travel. Notice how the camera subtly drifts side to side in this one long take. Or in this clip, where the nonexistent camera operator doesn't quite nail the zoom, resulting in a lurching movement. These subtle camera movements truly make it feel like there's a real-life camera operator. It's more personal, and it adds to the reality and intimacy of these scenes.</p><p>"Wall-E" does an incredible job of creating the same feeling of intimacy that great live-action films produce. Take a look at the diner scene from "Moonlight." This tender sequence has all of the same qualities as the scene from "Wall-E." It was shot on an anamorphic lens. It has practical lighting and intimate camerawork. It even uses diegetic music in a similar manner.</p><p>♪ I'm so glad ♪ ♪ Ooh ♪ ♪ When time runs out ♪</p><p>These choices in lighting and camera helps create the romantic undertones in both of these scenes. But while "Moonlight" was able to use tender dialogue to emphasize the passionate nature of the sequence...</p><p><strong>Kevin</strong>: You here now, man, that's all that matter.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: "Wall-E" had to rely almost entirely on its cinematography to create the perfect mood for the scene.</p><p>Between the shadowy practical lighting and the distortion of the anamorphic lenses, it's these perfect imperfections that give "Wall-E" charm and make it feel more realistic. It's a film that is beautiful, unconventional, and endearing. Just like its protagonist, Wall-E.</p>

How Pixar created a perfect animated romance scene in 'Wall-E'

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Quentin Tarantino's just landed quite a punch in his never-ending fight against digital filmmaking.</p><p>In anticipation of his new film "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3460252/">The Hateful Eight</a>," which was shot entirely in 70mm, Tarantino will reportedly take it upon himself to install 70mm projectors in 50 theaters across the US. </p><p><span>The frames on a 70mm film are nearly the same height as standard 35mm film, but about twice as wide (and cost twice as much to produce). Abrams</a> for the <a href="http://montclairfilmfest.org/">Montclair Film Festival</a> Saturday evening, host Colbert pointed out just how much Abrams uses the device in his films.</p><p>Colbert noted that one fan counted <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYgG9MhV5Q0">721 instances of lens flares</a> in his first "Star Trek" film. (That same fan also found <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIF14mwaSKI">826 in the secon</a>). </p><p>"It has to mean something, right?" Colbert asked.</p><p>"I'll say that when we were doing Trek, I loved this idea - Now, of course, I'm going to explain this whole thing, but then when you say, well, there are 825 in 'Super 8,' I have no answer," started Abrams. There are spherical lenses and there are anamorphic lenses that have a different kind of compression," said Abrams. "What you do is you expand the picture so on a 35 mm frame it gets basically crushed, and when you project it you use a lens that uncrushes it. But, what happens when you do that is you get these really cool oval background - when the sun's out of focus - and lens flares on anamorphic lenses, that are not coded, if you must know, had this great streaky quality and I've always loved how that looks." </p><p>"There are so many movies from my childhood that had those that when we were shooting 'Star Trek' I remember saying to Dan Mindel, the DP [director of photography], 'It would be so much fun if we' - I didn't think we were going to have quite that number of them, but it became this thing, and it was ridiculous," he said.</p><p>Abrams recalled Mindel bringing in these giant powerful halogen spotlights called "best in show" on set and they would use them while filming.</p><p>"It became this weird kind of artform of how to make the perfect lens flares with different kind of lenses," said Abrams. "And then I did 'Super 8,' and I did a lot of them there, too."</p><p>However, it was when Abrams returned to work on "Star Trek Into Darkness" that he really hit his tipping point with the art form.</p><p>"There was literally one scene where Alice Eve, who acts in the movie, was so obliterated<span> by a lens flare and I was showing the scene to my wife Katie, who just said, 'Okay, you know what? Enough. I can't see what this scene is about. Who is standing there?'" Abrams recalled. 'I'm like, 'It's Alice Eve.' <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://alessandrodd.deviantart.com/">Alessandro Diddi</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Anamorphic drawings are two-dimensional drawings that, when viewed from a single point of view, seem to leap off the page. <a href="http://alessandrodd.deviantart.com/gallery/">Graphic artist Alessandro Ditti</a> has mastered them.</p>
<p>Ditti is an Italian designer who began working on the 3D-looking art in 2013. "The first drawings helped me to learn the basics of the technique and, once I got assimilated, I began to catch a glimpse of the expressive possibilities that this [medium] could offer," Ditti told Business Insider via email.</p>
<p>To create the 3D illusions with just graphite and paper, Ditti says he has to consider practical aspects (design, photography and lighting) and psychological aspects (what the observer thinks he or she is seeing). His photos of the art often includes a pencil in them to immediately remind viewers that the items are 2D.</p>
<p>Ditti's drawings will be shown on July 19 at Santa Monica's "Masters of Illusion" exhibit. Here are some of his mind-blowing works of art.</p>

<p>People are most surprised that from the looks of the photo, the film appears to be shot in 35mm instead of digital.</p>
<p>This comes as a surprise considering the first film was <a href="http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/128450-the-amazing-spider-man-shot-with-3ality-digitals-cameras-" target="_blank">shot in digital</a>. Since the film is planned for a <a href="http://collider.com/amazing-spider-man-2-sequel-marc-webb-interview/" target="_blank">3D release</a>, that means that when all is said and done the film will have to be converted to 3D. </p>

Early 'Interstellar' Reactions Are Hailing It As The Must-See Event Of The Fall

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>This&#xa0;summer's&#xa0;"Fantastic Four"&#xa0;isn't the blockbuster franchise-starter its studio might have been hoping for. Instead, it is a <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/fantastic-four-reviews-2015-8">fascinating failure</a>, one that has everyone who did see it (or caught wind of the<a href="http://www.techinsider.io/fantastic-four-director-josh-trank-blames-studio-2015-8"> nasty behind-the-scenes drama</a>) wondering what could have been.<p><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/fantastic-four-review-2015-8">The movie viewers saw</a>&#xa0;was a slow-burn science fiction story largely set inside of labs and in boring CGI wastelands with a sudden, rushed climax that was wholly unsatisfying.</p><p>Its plot, in summary,&#xa0;followed a young genius Reed Richards, who was recruited into&#xa0;a government think tank in order to develop a teleportation device that leads to another dimension. He's joined by Susan Storm, her brother Johnny, his best friend Ben, and the misanthropic Victor Von Doom when an&#xa0;experiment to travel to the other dimension goes awry thanks to a spur-of-the-moment, unofficial test. They all gain superpowers, which the military is interested in exploiting, until Doom (who was presumed dead) shows up and tries to end the world, for some reason.&#xa0;</p><p>They fight him, and the movie ends. That's it. But it appears the movie wasn't always like this.&#xa0;</p><p>Over at Birth.Movies.Death, writer Devin Faraci has <a href="http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2015/08/18/what-was-fantastic-four-like-before-simon-kinberg">written up a summary of one of the movie's earliest drafts,</a> written in 2012 and credited to writer Jeremy Slater (Slater still has a story credit on the finished film, but executive producer Simon Kinberg was brought on to rework the story as a last-ditch effort to save the movie during all of its development turmoil).</p><p>According to Faraci, the script is entirely different from the movie audiences saw, straying far from the pensive science-fiction vibe of the finished film in favor of full-on crazy cosmic adventure, complete with alien civilizations, the Mole Man, and a certain Devourer of Worlds.</p><p>In short, it sounds like a real Fantastic Four story.</p><p>Here's the basic gist:</p><ul><li>Instead of a barren wasteland, the Negative Zone (Planet Zero in the finished film) the group heads to is an entire abandoned alien city.&#xa0;</li><li>In this city, they find a giant, powerful being named Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds. He's what causes&#xa0;their experiment to go wrong, appearing to kill Doom and nearly destroying the Gate as they return, initiating the accident that begins their transformation.</li><li>In the finished film, there's a time jump after we learn about their powers. That time jump is here too, but it's longer - four years instead of one.</li><li>In the middle of the script, there's an encounter with a secondary villain, Mole Man - a direct homage to the <a href="https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/c3plfwqm4fn50ludti9r.jpg">very first Fantastic Four comic.</a>&#xa0;</li><li>During the whole time, Doom is actually&#xa0;alive, working in the shadows to take over his native country of Latveria. His endgame is to build his own teleportation device, the Quantum Gate, in order to destroy Galactus.</li><li>The final confrontation is between the Fantastic Four&#xa0;and Doom, but with the threat of Galactus looming large. Because of this, the script ends with Reed and the FF kickstarting a school for young&#xa0;geniuses&#xa0;who will help them come up with a way to beat Galactus before he comes to devour Earth.</li></ul><p><span style="line-height: 22.5px;">You can read more on the <a href="http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2015/08/18/what-was-fantastic-four-like-before-simon-kinberg">early script over at BMD here</a>.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 22.5px;">As&#xa0;Faraci says, the script is definitely overstuffed, with&#xa0;a lot going on - but when the&#xa0;finished film doesn't have&#xa0;<em>enough</em> going on, it makes this sound much more delightful.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 22.5px;">What's more, it has Galactus! A&#xa0;<em>real</em> Galactus, not anamorphous cloud-thing that we saw in 2007's "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer."</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 22.5px;"><div></div></span></p><p class="embed-spacer">In comparison, the real Galactus looks like this:</p><p class="embed-spacer"></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p class="embed-spacer">Having Galactus would've been a big deal - mostly because he's emblematic of everything big and crazy about superhero comic books, the biggest, proudest icon of the boundless imagination of creators like Jack Kirby who were inventing things no one had ever seen before on a daily basis. If Marvel Comics truly began with the birth of the Fantastic Four, then the arrival of Galactus within the pages of their titular comic signaled the moment when the publisher was at the absolute peak of their game - a peak that would carry on for a shockingly long time.&#xa0;</p><p class="embed-spacer">"Fantastic Four" still might have failed with this script, but at least it would've had one of the biggest aspects of the source material intact: its ridiculous, crazy, ambitious imagination.</p>

Now imagine stripping away the entire crew and narrowing it down to just your phone's camera.</p><p>This is the challenge that "Tangerine" decided to take on and not only does it succeed, but it also breaks some new ground in doing so. </p><p>"Tangerine" was shot exclusively using three iPhone 5S phones (this was likely the latest phone model when the film was in production). You will notice it at first (it is hard not to), then you get used to it, then you will barely be able to tell the difference.</p><p>Taking place entirely on one night, Christmas Eve to be exact, "Tangerine" is all the more interesting because it tells a very specific story. It is set in Los Angeles primarily at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Highland Avenue. This is an area notorious for drugs and prostitution.</p><p>This is far away from the glamour of show business and a reminder that yes, this is a diverse, multi-dimensional city. If you have never been to Los Angeles, you will get a completely new perspective of America's second largest city. If you know it well, then you will enjoy the hyper-specific references (for instance, when they say they're "walking to Vermont," they mean the street, not the state).</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Magnolia Pictures via YouTube</span></p><p class="caption">Much of the film takes place around the intersection of Santa Monica &amp; Highland in L.A.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The film centers around Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) and Alexandra (Mya Taylor), two transgender prostitutes who get into a lot of misadventures, some hilarious, and some deeply sad. Sin-Dee finds out her pimp boyfriend (James Ransone) cheated on her while she was in prison. So she takes Alexandra on a mission on Christmas Eve to find and confront him.</p><p>This high stakes mission is treated in a very laid back way, and it allows director Sean Baker to navigate through the strangest places and people in the City of Angels.</p><p>One person who pops in and out is Armenian cab driver Razmik (Karren Karagulian). This might be the first time I've ever heard Armenian be spoken in an American film. Something that makes "Tangerine" unique is that almost every film set in LA will show you the Hollywood Sign and Venice Beach, but few of them ever acknowledge the fact that LA and its suburbs has one of the largest Armenian populations in the world (a portion of Hollywood is referred to as Little Armenia). </p><p>"Tangerine" doesn't make a huge show of the fact that it is shot on an iPhone (the production notes packet, given out at press screenings, dedicates one small paragraph to it). However, I feel like it is as important to the story as Sin-Dee and Alexandra are. It makes the viewer feel like they are there. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Magnolia Pictures via YouTube</span></p><p class="caption">The characters frequently convene at Donut Time, a low key L.A. landmark.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In a way, it feels like the phone captures more than an expensive, nicer looking camera might have captured. </p><p>Baker says that part of the reason he shot the movie this way was that it allowed him to get more natural performances out of his inexperienced leads, as this would be less intimidating than a real camera. It also helped with extras, as most of them were just people the crew found on the street. To give the film that grainy, cinematic look, they attached an anamorphic lens and shot through that. It is kind of like "Bowfinger," in which Steve Martin played a director shooting the lowest budget sci-fi film imaginable. </p><p>This bare bones approach is what makes the film seem so raw and at times more like a documentary than fiction. This fits well, given that "Tangerine" is primarily about people living double lives in a city fueled by lies, even outside of show business.</p><p>At times, you feel like you are getting access to places that you are forbidden from. Or simply, just the bus and the subway. And yes, there is an entire subway system in LA. </p><p>Watching "Tangerine" made me think immediately of "Clerks" and "Slacker."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Magnolia Pictures via YouTube</span></p><p class="caption">Alexandra (Mya Taylor) and Sin-Dee</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>This must be how people felt when they saw those independent classics in the early 1990s which proved you could make an engaging film that exists more on loosely connected scenes and conversations than the traditional three act structure. When people saw that Kevin Smith made "Clerks" so good with so little money, they thought that anybody with a few bucks can make a movie. Now that most people have some form of smartphone, everybody really can make a movie. </p><p>Well, anybody can make a movie. However, not everybody should make a movie. I thought about Alexandra's uproarious fight with a customer in front of some indifferent cops. I thought about that tense moment when you realize that Razmik's secret would be revealed, and his entire world would unravel in an instant. I thought about how this is one of the bleakest Christmas movies I have ever seen, and it takes place in an area covered in palm trees.</p><p>"Tangerine" is a Christmas movie for people who don't feel the Christmas spirit. </p><p>I loved its dark, cynical spirit and how, in that, it ends up being a story about friendship. This brave movie was shot entirely on an iPhone - and it's so good

<p>If you're heading out to see the film, which opened in theaters Friday, you want to make sure you're seeing it in the best possible way.</p>
<p>Now that I've seen the movie twice, in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/interstellar-review-2014-11">70mm IMAX</a> and 70mm film, it <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">became instantly clear Nolan's sci-fi film should be seen on the biggest screen possible. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Friday evening, I headed over to New York City's Ziegfeld theater </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">to see the movie on 70mm film. Since Nolan <span>filmed the movie in both 65mm IMAX and 35mm anamorphic film, I figured it only made sense to see it in both IMAX and film before making a decision on the right way to see it.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>M</span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">y biggest concern was how the big IMAX scenes would transition over to a smaller screen. There are a few absolutely gorgeous moments when Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway's characters are blasting through space that </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I couldn't imagine looking better in any format other than IMAX.</span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">While I was pleasantly surprised to still feel the pull of being taken through space in 70mm, </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">those scenes felt much more immersive while seeing it in IMAX. You feel like you're on a ride as you appear to zoom through a wormhole and across an icy planet.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Your eyes can't help but wander up the screen as you feel the enormity of a giant wave on another planet. </span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The only problem is that if you want to see "Interstellar" on a legitimate IMAX screen, they are few in the US. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">As IMAX has become an increasingly popular format, many theaters started </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/real-imax-screens-size-difference-2014-1">retrofitting theaters with smaller IMAX screens that are around 30 feet high</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">There is only one real IMAX screen in New York City, the <a href="https://www.imax.com/theatres/t/amc-loews-lincoln-square-13-imax/">AMC Lincoln Square theater</a>. It's about a 600-person theater with a screen that's 80 feet high and 100 feet wide. If there's a movie worth seeing in IMAX, that's the theater I'll want to see it at.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">According to Paramount, there are <a href="https://interstellar.withgoogle.com/imax-experience-in-70mm">42 theaters showing "Interstellar" in 70mm IMAX</a> in the US and Canada. <p><span>While the sound didn't appear to distort any of the dialogue during my IMAX screening at Lincoln Square, I did pick up on a few more jokes from a wise-cracking robot named TARS that I missed the first time around. </span></p>
<p>The sound of composer Hans Zimmer's harrowing soundtrack was less deafening and dynamic in the Ziegfeld. If you're not a fan of very loud films, <a href="https://interstellar.withgoogle.com/70mm-film">70mm may be the way to go</a>.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>

Here Is The Only Way You Should See 'Interstellar'

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, audiences were taken by zany comedy "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3824458/?ref_=ttfc_fc_tt">Tangerine,</a>" the latest film from "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280257/?ref_=nm_knf_i2">Greg the Bunny</a>" co-creator <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0048918/?ref_=tt_ov_dr">Sean Baker</a>.</span><p>Baker enjoys telling stories set in real settings, casting actors with little to no experience, and exploring stories you've likely never seen before on the big screen. That can range from a New York garment district wholesaler dealing with fatherhood ("<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1000769/?ref_=nm_knf_i3">Price of Broadway</a>") to a porn actress befriending an elderly woman ("<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2035630/?ref_=nm_knf_i1">Starlet</a>").</p><p>"Tangerine" continues that motif as Baker tells the story of a transgender prostitute named Sin-Dee (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm6702770/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t1">Kitana Kiki Rodriguez</a>) who learns that her pimp is cheating on her and navigates through Los Angeles on Christmas Eve to confront him.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But what has grabbed people's attention beyond Baker's unconventional tale is his decision to shoot the film only using the iPhone 5S.</span><p>"I didn't see any other way the film could be done," Baker told Business Insider in the Manhattan office of the film's distribution company, Magnolia Pictures, last week.</p><p>With a micro budget of only around $120,000 to make the film, Baker knew he had used up all his favors doing his previous films, and that if he wanted to make "Tangerine" he had to be creative.</p><p>"The film that turned me onto [shooting on an iPhone] was Spike Lee's '<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1989593/?ref_=nv_sr_1">Red Hook Summer,</a>'" Baker said, referring to Lee's low budget 2012 drama. "Remember the kid shooting on his iPad? There's something about every time it cuts to his iPad footage I got more interested. I thought, Why isn't anyone doing a whole film like this yet?"</p><p>Around the same time Baker realized that the iPhone 5S was coming out, and included an upgraded camera lens from its predecessors.</p><p>Baker realized he could pull off shooting the movie with the phone (he used three total, but never at the same time).</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Through camera tests with his co-cinematographer <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0156547/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cr4">Radium Cheung</a>, Baker liked the high quality of the picture the 5S provided. But he was completely sold on shooting with the phone after coming across a new anamorphic lens adapter for smartphones created by <a href="http://www.moondoglabs.com/">Moondog Labs</a> and the app, <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/filmic-pro/id436577167?mt=8">FiLMiC Pro</a>.&#xa0;<p>With the lens adapter and the app, which made it possible for the phone to shoot at the level a pricey DSLR camera provides, Baker felt the phone would be "elevated to a cinematic level." (The FiLMiC Pro app costs $7.99 and the Moondog lens adapters range from $160-$175.)</p><p>And his financiers, who included <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0243233/?ref_=tt_ov_wr">Mark</a> and <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0243231/?ref_=tt_ov_wr">Jay Duplass</a> (creators of HBO's "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3061830/?ref_=nv_sr_2">Togetherness</a>"), agreed after Baker showed them his test footage.</p><p>What Baker didn't realize until principal photographer on "Tangerine" began in the February of 2013 was the level of sophisticated shots they could pull off with the phone. Baker used his talents as a former bike messenger in Manhattan to weave closely around his characters as they said their lines. Biking with one hand on the handle bar and another holding a smart-phone designed Steadicam called a "<a href="http://www.tiffen.com/steadicam_smoothee_home2.html">Smoothee</a>" ($149), the movie has these slick, eye-catching passing shots of Sin-Dee as she walks furiously throughout L.A.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But perhaps the most dazzling of the cinematography in the film are the "crane" shots.</span><p>Throughout the film a handful of scenes begin high above buildings and then smoothly travel down to the faces of the characters. On traditional movie sets giant crane rigs that cost in the thousands of dollars are used to pull this off. Baker was able to do the same shots cheaper and in a more practical way.</p><p>"We purchased a large painter's pole and we would rig the phone to the end of it and do these up and down movements," Baker explains has he stands and imitates the movements, almost like he's painting the walls off the Magnolia meeting room with a long paint roller. "We would do like 10 shots, one after the other, and then look at all of them on the phone and decide if we had to do it again. It was basically like being back in your parent's yard, 12 years old, doing stuff with the VHS camera."</p><p>Baker admits if the film was done a few years later they probably would have used drones for some of those shots.</p><p>Though shooting with the phone was a success, Baker was weary about promoting how "Tangerine" was shot. When the film got into this year's Sundance Film Festival back in January, he did not allow any of the publicity material to state that it was shot with an iPhone.</p><p>"We didn't want people to have any preconceived notions about how it would look," he said. "I have to say, if I had a choice to see a movie between a film shot on 35mm and a film shot on an iPhone, I would pick the film shot on 35mm."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>But following the premiere screening, Baker knew he had to reveal how they shot it. Overnight, he became the poster child of the future of low budget filmmaking.<p>"It's starting to get crazy," Baker admits. "I'm getting way too many Facebook messages and Twitter DMs from people asking how I made the movie. I just don't have the time to answer all of them. It's so easy - you get the phone, you get the app, you get the rig and you just do it."</p><p>Apple has even warmed to the film.</p><p>Baker said when they originally sent Apple the film treatment they got the typical response that the company didn't want to be involved. But after the Sundance premiere he began hearing from multiple departments in the company. Some praising what he did. Others, not so much.</p><p>"A few times they had been really nice to me, but a few times they rubbed me the wrong way," he said. "One time a department was like, "We're coming to your apartment and we're going to shoot the way you edit and shoot and we're going to spend two days with you.' I was like no, you're not."</p><p>But all is well, as Baker said Apple invited the film to take part in one of their Apple Store filmmaker chats recently, and they were all given new iPhones.</p><p>Baker is not planning to make another film on an iPhone, hoping that he will have a much larger budget to work with on his next one. But he believes audiences will be seeing more movies made on phones in the years to come.</p><p>"I went to Sundance thinking we would be one of many films shot on a phone," he said. "But a lot of people are starting to use it for features and shots. And a lot have been used for commercials already. Here's how a filmmaker shot his critically-acclaimed movie using just an iPhone

S<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">o far reviews have been <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/interstellar_2014/">somewhat mixed</a> and that may be because "Interstellar" is the sort of film that deserves to be watched twice through, as is the case with many of director Christopher Nolan's complex films <span>("Inception," "The Dark Knight" trilogy)</span>.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The space voyage is easily </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">one of Nolan's most thought-provoking films yet. It's definitely his most ambitious. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">In the not-too-distant future, we're not fearing for our lives from zombies or a virus, but rather a food shortage brought on by the adverse effects of Mother Nature. Devastating dust storms that leave piles of soot and cause lingering respiratory issues are our biggest concern.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>

<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a former test pilot and engineer, is told his daughter's generation will be the last to survive on Earth. Their only hope is for Cooper to head to the stars and traverse through a wormhole in search of a habitable planet along with five other companions.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">At its best, "Interstellar" is a joyride through the great unknown while tearing at your heartstrings. The farther you get into the film the more abstract it becomes until you're floating, literally, into the bizarre unknown. There's a moment near the film's climax where you'll probably look at the screen, stop, gauge the audience's reaction, and then look back and wonder what the heck is going on because it's that out there.</p>
<p class="p1">The film's 2-hour and 47-minute runtime plays out in what I like to refer to as five acts. It builds as a slow crescendo from family film on Earth to space exploration with an unexpected twist to Kubrick-level crazy before coming back down to Earth for its final leg.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">At the surface level, "Interstellar" is Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" meets Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey." It has the innocence and mysteriousness of an other-worldly being's presence in "Close Encounters," while there are an endless amount of comparisons to be made to "2001." Nolan has said both served as inspiration for the film, along with other sci-fi films including "Metropolis" and "Star Wars," and it shows. Many visual cues in space are taken from "2001" and a scene toward the final act feels like it could have had a place in the 1968 film.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>

<p class="p1">On a deeper level, Jessica Chastain may have said it best when <a href="http://insidemovies.ew.com/2014/10/16/interstellar-christopher-nolan-anne-hathaway/">telling Entertainment Weekly that  "Interstellar" is a love letter from Nolan to his daughter, Flora</a>. The film's production title was "Flora's Letter." Underneath it all, that's what "Interstellar" really is - a father-daughter story reflected in the relationship between Cooper and his daughter, Murph (MacKenzie Foy), the two lead characters at the center of the film. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">There's a line about half way into the film delivered by Anne Hathaway's character, Amelia Brand, in which she says "Love is the one thing we're capable of perceiving that transcends time and space." </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">That quote is very much the heart of "Interstellar," as McConaughey fights to get back home to his family.</span></p>
<p class="p1">Nolan's movie isn't just a letter to his daughter, it's also one to the planet to make sure we don't end up depleting our own resources foolishly. There are minor jabs to our heavy focus on gadgets and new devices consuming us. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Time serves as a constant antagonist of the film </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Cooper and Brand frequently discuss how much time it will cost them to travel to X planet vs. Y planet. It will take eight months to get to Mars and two years to get to Saturn. An hour scouring one foreign planet will cost them seven Earth years. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">We watch as time steals away precious moments Cooper has with his family while he fulfills a duty he feels obligated to do <span>- </span>save mankind. As he watches transmissions from his children over the years as they grow and he appears to stay the same, you can't help but want to tear up alongside the rough and tough McConaughey who is reduced to a puddle of tears onscreen. </p>

<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">And while this may not be another Oscar-winning role, </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Mc</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Conaughey delivers again. He has this easy-going, rugged demeanor that can equally charm you while he's embracing his daughter close or joking casually with one of two military droids and disarm you when butting heads with Brand. At this point in his ongoing McConaissance, he just has to show up to win you over.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> Michael Caine - a Nolan favorite now appearing in six of the director's films - and Jessica Chastain also deliver strong performances, but the real breakout star is 13-year-old MacKenzie Foy, who plays Cooper's young daughter. </span></p>

<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">You may recognize Foy from the "Twilight" franchise as a young vampire, but boy does she stand out here as a feisty and stubborn yet brilliant young girl who follows in her father's footsteps with a love for science. </span></p>
<p class="p2">Comedian Bill Irwin is also a welcome delight bringing to life TARS, a sarcastic giant military droid whose concrete slab appearance parallels Kubrick's <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=kubrick+monolith&amp;espv=2&amp;biw=1620&amp;bih=748&amp;tbm=isch&amp;tbo=u&amp;source=univ&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=TfVYVLCFBsbLsAT70YLwBA&amp;ved=0CDEQsAQ&amp;dpr=0.9">mysterious monolith from "2001."</a> You'll probably be taken aback when you first see him moving strangely around on screen but you'll be entranced when you see him scurry back and forth on a water-logged planet.</p>

<h3 class="p2"><strong>The Moment Audiences Will Be Talking About</strong></h3>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">As cool as TARS and his counterpart CASE are, o</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">ne of the best parts of the film happens about half-way through when a huge actor reveal occurs, shaking up Cooper's mission. If you've been following along with <a href="http://screenrant.com/interstellar-role-matt-damon-christopher-nolan/">casting announcements</a>, you won't be surprised, but a good many people should be shocked as the big star goes uncredited in the film. </span></p>
<h3>The Music Makes the Movie.</h3>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">You can't talk about "Interstellar" without mentioning the music. The two go hand in hand, really. Nolan's fifth collaboration with composer Hans Zimmer is dynamic. His soundtracks always breathe life into Nolan's films and this time is no different. </span></p>
<p class="p2"><span>There's something about the ability of Zimmer's scores to make the film feel bigger than it really is and that's one perk of seeing it in IMAX. You can instantly be filled with an eerie sense of wonder of what it's like to be in space but at any second Zimmer can crank up the noise gradually or suddenly so that your heart tightens in your chest and your fingers clutch nervously at your sides.</span></p>
<p class="p2">Some of his darkest tunes in "Interstellar" bring to mind "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uU5FyxKLfm8">Gotham's Reckoning</a>" from "The Dark Knight Rises" soundtrack, another collaboration with Nolan.</p>

<h3><strong>The Moment That Will Make You Scratch Your Head</strong></h3>
<p>I mentioned earlier there's a strange moment that may make you raise your eyebrow and wonder what's going on. Without spoiling much, there's a moment late into the film that screams Kubrick. It's so bizarre and wacky at first that y<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">ou'll either embrace this moment as a brilliant risky move </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">or dismiss it as jumping the shark in trying to tie together the film's vast plot. I'm still grappling with whether or not I liked this Kubrick-esque fourth act in the film. A second viewing may help me enjoy it more.</span></p>
<h3><strong>Should you see it in IMAX?</strong></h3>
<p class="p1">People over the next week will surely ask whether or not they should see "Interstellar" in IMAX 70mm or which of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/interstellar-different-format-to-see-the-movie-2014-10">other five formats</a> I recommend. Before seeing the film, I was ready to tell everyone to see this movie on the largest screen possible. After viewing it in IMAX 70mm at AMC's Lincoln Square, I'm not so sure that's the case. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">I know Nolan filmed the movie in both 65mm IMAX film and 35mm anamorphic film, but since the film goes back and forth between space and Earth and other planets in between, not every moment is filmed in IMAX. There were a handful of moments where I felt watching in IMAX was absolutely necessary: when you see the scale of the other planets being explored ranging from a water planet with waves cresting at what appear to be 100 ft tall or more to a tundra with clouds made of sharp ice.</p>

<p class="p1">There are two other moments in the fourth and fifth legs of the film, the latter housing an <a href="http://hdwallpapersbase.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Inception-Wallpaper-1.jpg">"Inception"-inducing moment</a> from the collapsing dreams. (You'll know it when you see it.)</p>
<p class="p1">There's one must-see scene in IMAX about an hour into the film, when Nolan first takes us into space. When McConaughey, Hathaway, and the rest of their 6-team crew first shoot through the stars you feel like you're right there with them, soaring through that wide expanse of space. And it's such a strange and wonderful feeling because you're not wearing 3D glasses or IMAX 3D glasses. You're experiencing it all on screen with the naked eye. It's a beautiful, mesmerizing depth perception trick that repeats when the crew heads through a wormhole soon afterward. Nolan says his main focus for the film was to try and put the audience in space and he succeeds in doing just that.</p>
<p class="p1">Will you get the best experience out of one of the IMAX screenings? Probably. Since Nolan filmed a large chunk of the movie that way you may as well pay to see it the way the director intended. It's not like you're shelling out the big bucks to see a post-converted 3D film. I just wasn't as blown away during my experience at the Lincoln Square theater as I was by last year's space epic "Gravity."</p>
<h3 class="p1"><strong>The film is not without its faults. </strong></h3>
<p class="p1">Early on, Cooper just happens to stumble upon NASA at the exact moment when they need a pilot to command a space shuttle leaving in search of a new planet to sustain life. The whole bit seems rather convenient and contrived. Even Cooper points this out; however, it's something that makes a bit more sense by the end of the film. </p>

<p class="p1"><span>Nolan consulted theoretical physicist Kip Thorne who serves as an executive producer on the film, but t</span>he science itself can be a bit dense and go over the average viewer's head as a NASA team tries to solve an equation about gravity and there are discussions about finding the shortest route to embark on their journey.</p>
<p class="p1">And while the many nods to Kubrick's filmmaking are there, I'm not sure if it works all the time. There's a particular scene where the camera cuts multiple times from no sound in space to sound onboard the shuttle with McConaughey, Hathaway, and others and it's a little bit jarring. Nolan says the scene is supposed to "emphasize the claustrophobia of the ships"; however, I'm not sure that completely works. Then again, there are some on Twitter suggesting the IMAX sound mix of the film may not be the best.</p>

<p class="p2">Perhaps, one of the biggest flaws in "Interstellar" is<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> that it feels slightly formulaic. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">Whenever I watch a Christopher Nolan film I've grown accustomed to obsessively looking for clues in the beginning of the film that will tell me something about its end. If you've seen the brilliant mind-boggling 2001 indie "Memento" or equally mind-bending "Inception," you know how a Nolan film works. You need to go back and watch the film a second and possibly third time because there's always something at the start of the film which may allude to the end. This is true of "Interstellar." I won't give anything away, but pay close attention to the start. *mini-spoiler*<span style="color: #000000; background-color: #000000;">If you do, you won't be completely surprised by its end.</span>*mini-spoiler* This common element makes Nolan's filmmaking process a bit predictable. Stick a hint about the end of the film at its start. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Where's the fun in that for his biggest fans?</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Overall, </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Interstellar" makes you think a lot about survival, the future of the human race, and the lengths we'll go in order to ensure that future. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">You'll leave the film thinking about it long after you've seen it. You may not even want to leave the theater right away. That may be why Nolan's credits are simple white text on black to let you ruminate on everything you just saw.</span></p>
<p class="p1">Is it Oscar gold? In the visual department, sure. It makes for one of the best cinematic experiences you'll see all year; however, in having so much occur in a nearly 3-hour film, Nolan's ambitious space film may have attempted too much. </p>
<p class="p1">"Interstellar" is being released in in 70mm IMAX film, 70mm film, and 35mm film Nov. 5. It's everywhere Nov. 7.</p>
