<ul><li>The <keyword id="6393794" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dairy" source="Orion">dairy</keyword> industry has been experiencing a consistent surge in raw <keyword id="6362951" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="milk" source="Orion">milk</keyword> prices. </li><li>Both the major dairy brands, <keyword id="15267021" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="amul-and-mother-dairy" source="Orion">Amul and Mother Dairy</keyword> had in August hiked milk prices by ₹ 2 per litre. </li><li>This is being done owing to multifold increase in varied input costs.</li></ul> After <keyword id="26280" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="amul" source="Orion">Amul</keyword>, another dairy major <keyword id="6376312" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mother-dairy" source="Orion">Mother Dairy</keyword> has raised its milk prices by ₹ 2 per litre on full cream and cow milk variants with effect from Sunday (October 16). A Mother Dairy spokesperson said that the dairy industry has been experiencing a consistent surge in raw milk prices, which has increased by about ₹ 3/kg in the last two months alone, owing to multifold increase in varied input costs. "Increased fodder prices and low rainfall in some northern states have aggravated the situation. We are therefore compelled to revise prices to support farmers and ensure availability of quality milk for consumers," he said. Earlier, during the day, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (<keyword id="134812" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GCMMF" source="Orion">GCMMF</keyword>), which sells milk and milk products under the brand name 'Amul' had announced raising the rates of full cream milk and buffalo milk by ₹ 2 per litre amid the festive season. The price of full cream milk has increased from ₹ 61 per litre to ₹ 63 per litre. Both the major dairy brands, Amul and Mother Dairy had in August hiked milk prices by ₹ 2 per litre to compensate the increase in procurement costs. Mother Dairy raises milk prices by ₹ 2 per litre on select variants

New Delhi, Dec 14 () India's leading dairy firm Amul on Saturday announced hiking milk prices by Rs 2 per litre across various states, while Mother Dairy increased rates by up to Rs 3 per litre in Delhi-NCR due to rise in procurement cost.
 The new prices will be effective from Sunday (December 15), Mother Dairy and Amul said in separate statements.
 Prices of raw milk are generally lower in the winter season, but this year they have risen due to late monsoon followed by excess rains.
 Increase in milk prices by the two major dairy firms could impact retail inflation, which spiked to a more than three-year high of 5.54 per cent in November due to costlier food products.
 Mother Dairy has increased prices of token and poly pack or pouched milk by Rs 2-3 per litre.
 Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets dairy products under the Amul brand, said it has decided to revise milk prices by Rs 2 per litre in Ahmedabad and Saurashtra markets of Gujarat, Delhi NCR, West Bengal, Mumbai and Maharashtra.
 GCMMF supplies 1.4 crore litres of milk per day across the country, of which 33 lakh litres is in Delhi-NCR.
 Mother Dairy too sells over 30 lakh litres per day of milk in the national capital region.
 Both the dairy majors attributed the price increase to higher procurement cost and said they pass on 80 per cent of the sales realisation from milk towards its procurement from dairy farmers.
 As per its rate chart, Mother Dairy has hiked the price of bulk vended milk (token milk) by Rs 2 to Rs 42 per litre.
 In poly packs, Mother Dairy's full cream milk has become costlier by Rs 2 to Rs 55 per litre. Price of half litre full cream milk has been hiked to Rs 28 from Rs 27.
 Mother Dairy's toned milk price has been hiked by Rs 3 per litre to Rs 45, while double-toned milk will now be sold at Rs 39 per litre compared to Rs 36.
 Price of Mother Dairy cow milk too has been raised by Rs 3 per litre to Rs 47 per litre.
 In NCR, Amul Gold and Amul Taaza will be costlier Rs 2 each to Rs 55 per litre and Rs 44 per litre respectively. Cow milk will now be sold at Rs 44 against Rs 42 per litre earlier.
 Amul said that in the last three years, it has made only two price revisions for pouch milk which is only Rs 4 per litre and less than 3 per cent per annum increase in MRP.
 "This year the price of cattle feed has increased by more than 35 per cent. Considering increase in cattle feed and other input costs, our member unions have increased milk procurement price in the range of Rs 100 to Rs 110 per Kg fat which is more than 15 per cent increase than the last year for the 36 lakh milk producers of Gujarat," Amul said.
 Mother Dairy said that milk availability across various states is under severe stress due to adverse climatic conditions including extended monsoon and delayed start of the flush season.
 Stating that adverse climatic conditions have resulted in a significant increase in feed and fodder prices, Mother Dairy said: "This has impacted the prices paid to milk producers. The raw milk prices, which in a normal year come down during the winter months, have firmed up substantially."
 The prices paid to milk producers have increased by about Rs 6 per litre, up by almost 20 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year, the company said, adding that it was compelled to raise milk rates. MJH ABM

Talking of the growing concerns on <keyword id="6361617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change">climate change</keyword>, Microsoft founder, Bill Gates, in his <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/bill-gates-warns-of-the-dangers-of-cow-farts-and-the-world-should-take-his-words-seriously/articleshow/67962704.cms">annual letter</a>, expressed concern over the dangers of cow farts. "I wish more people fully understood what it will take to stop climate change," the letter said. A 2018 study, titled <a href="http://science.sciencemag.org/content/361/6399/eaam5324.full">‘The Future of Meat</a>’ published in Science Mag explores the correlation between human meat consumption and population growth. Conclusions drawn show how these consumption habits are increasing and because of which, not only is it a health hazard for humans but there are negative consequences for the <keyword id="6356826" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ENVIRONMENT">environment</keyword> as well. However, there are two key areas other than the growing population and their intake of meat -- manufacturing of building materials and agriculture -- which may have a dangerous consequence, according to him. While the world is on a swing to twice the number of buildings by 2060, the letter highlighted that the raw materials used for buildings constitute 21% of the <keyword id="82635" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="greenhouse-emissions">greenhouse emissions</keyword>, globally. Contributing his bit, Gates was addressing climate change via Breakthrough Energy Ventures and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/bill-and-melinda-gates-foundation">Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation</a>, aimed at enhancing healthcare. Climate change Livestock, inclusive of cattle, chickens, sheep, pigs and goats, are <a href="https://news.un.org/en/story/2014/04/466012">responsible</a> for nearly 14.5% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions according to the United National Food and Agriculture Organisation. That means that the emissions from livestock are at par, if not a little in excess, with emissions from transport that stand at around 14% <a href="https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/global-greenhouse-gas-emissions-data">according</a> to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

 The analysis done in the study compares the variation in the levels of GHG emissions across different meat production cycles. Their study shows that ruminant mammals like <keyword id="52148" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="cows">cows</keyword> are responsible for the highest amount of emissions, followed by non-ruminant mammals and poultry, in that order. Even in comparing the different production systems, intensive rearing is more environmentally friendly than its extensive counterparts. What can India do? It’s no secret that India is home to largest cow population in the world. Between Mother Dairy, Amul and various regional milk brands, milk is essentially India’s largest ‘crop’ <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/expert-view/milk-is-indias-largest-crop-worth-around-rs-6-5-lakh-crore-says-rs-sodhi-of-amul/articleshow/63171485.cms">valued</a> at around ₹650 billion. There are a quite a few different schools of thought on the matter. While some approach the problem from the consumption side, where human choice behavior is analysed, others believe the solutions lie in changing livestock rearing techniques. The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) is working towards <a href="https://theconversation.com/to-reduce-greenhouse-gases-from-cows-and-sheep-we-need-to-look-at-the-big-picture-56509">tailoring</a> the diet of cattle in such a way that <keyword id="859515" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Methane-Emissions">methane emissions</keyword> are minimised. Using physical and environmental parameters, the ideal feed quantities and mineral supplements are determined. According to their study so far, the tailored diet can mean up to 12-15% less methane emissions from cows and buffaloes. The issues of livestock rearing and consumption patterns are highly localised and need policy changes at a local level. There is no blanket solution that can be applied globally and be conducive for all countries involved.

Cow farts and livestock dangerous for climate change: Bill Gates

In a small town called <keyword id="2648" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anand">Anand</keyword> in western India in 1946 farmers were having a difficult time having to deal with the exploitative trade practices followed by the local trade cartel. Refusing to be cowed down by the cartel, farmers of this area went on a milk strike. And they approached the great Indian patriot Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for a solution. His advice was natural, start a cooperative movement. 
 
And they did. 
 
Inspired by India’s freedom struggle, it all began when farmers in a small town near Anand city in Gujarat made milk as a symbol of protest. Tribhuvandas Patel was a local leader who had been imprisoned number of times during India’s struggle for freedom. With the help of his supporters, he found a dairy co-operative in 1946 in Anand. The cooperative movement was a movement against the atrocities of Polson Dairy, a locally-owned dairy in Anand, which procured milk from farmers at very low rates to sell to the Bombay (now Mumbai) government. 
 28 year old Mechanical Engineer from Kerala, <keyword id="168701" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Verghese-Kurien">Verghese Kurien</keyword> arrived in Anand in 1949 as a government employee to manage a dairy. Fed up with his monotonous and unchallenging job he had already made up his mind to leave but upon Tribhuvandas Patel’s request he agreed to stay back for few months to oversee installation of the newly ordered machineries. No one then knew that Dr. Kurien would never leave Anand and make it the milk capital of India. In 1955 <keyword id="26280" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="amul">Amul</keyword> (then short for Anand Milk Union Ltd) was born. Verghese Kurien was in almost every way the architect of Amul. He went from helping farmers repair their machinery to revolutionising the Indian dairy industry by scripting Operation Flood, a cooperative movement that turned India from a net importer of milk into one of the world’s largest producers. Not for nothing was Dr. Verghese Kurien called the Milkman of India. 
 
The first dairy, Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union, which created Amul in 1955, handed over the brand name to Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) in 1973. Thus, in 1973 the GCMMF was established to market milk and milk products manufactured by six district cooperative unions of Gujarat. 
 
 
 Branding played a major role for Amul’s success, the (original) Amul Girl was created by <keyword id="245066" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sylvester-daCunha">Sylvester daCunha</keyword> (daCunha Communications) to counter the Polson dairy girl. Polson’s sexy village belle didn’t stand a chance to the tubby little moppet in the polka-dotted dress and a matching ribbon. Amul ads were cleverly designed to add a tinge of nationalism to an essentially rural revolution. The first Amul Ad campaign came in 1967 in Bombay (now Mumbai). And the response was phenomenal... and continues to be. Amul is also credited with a Guinness world record for longest running ad campaign of the world for its Utterly Butterly girl portraying day-to-day issues since 1967. In 1977, the Amul story was showcased through a Hindi movie titled Manthan directed by Shyam Benegal starring Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Smita Patil and Amrish Puri which also won National award for best film. The movie again demonstrated the power of collective might as the movie was financed by a contribution of Rs. 2 by 5 lakh farmers. 
 
And then, Amul became a brandname in its own right. It is said that for Operation Flood, Kurien’s idea of having farmers own the brand went a long way in creating a sense of ownership and, in turn, responsibility for the product’s quality. Since the mid-90s, Amul has been able to take the range outside the security of traditional products, milk powder and butter. Amul diversified to everything from ice-cream, curd to long-life flavoured milk. Brand Amul is now present in over 50 countries. 
 
 
 
Amul has come a long way since its inception. The contribution of Amul in development of rural India as well as economic growth of the nation is legendary.
