When it launched in Germany in 1961, it was the first mass-produced car that could traverse land and sea. But after just seven years, the automaker went out of business, and the Amphicar would become a novelty. Of the 3,800 units produced, over 3,000 of them were imported to the US, where only a few remain today.Ethan Langley: Not all of those will actually swim and drive. Within five years of me trying to make this dream come true, I think I found four that were for sale, and most of them were rusted out to the point that you didn't want to own them.Narrator: And only a lucky few own one that still floats, like Ethan Langley.Ethan: So, the Amphicar is basically like a tank. It's set up so everything's sealed. It has a belly pan up underneath it, which is very unique for most vehicles and that kind of thing. But that's what keeps it floating, keeps it watertight.So, to get the car ready to go into the water, you have to do a few things. You want to make sure that the trunk in the front is actually latched down, 'cause there's a seal up there. You're going to hit the water pretty good, and the water's going to come up over. You really want to make sure the plug's in in the back to drain the water out. So you want to make sure that's always put back in. Beyond that, just make sure the doors are latched, and have fun. All right, let's get this beast a-rolling.[laughs] Pretty crazy, huh?It's phenomenal in the water for what I've had per a boat. I think we can drive it around for 1 gallon per hour on the water. On the land, the suspension's a little bit rough, just the way they designed it back in the '60s, but all in all, I mean, it's a great vehicle on land and in water.Narrator: The Amphicar was a huge hit at first, but over time, sales began to dwindle. Production was forced to a halt after two years due to its expensive manufacturing process. And when the US changed its EPA regulations in 1968, the company lost 90% of its customer base. But the Amphicar has not been forgotten. Some have even made a business out of it, like the Amphicar tours that can be found at Disney Springs in Florida. This classic will be around for decades to come.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image"></div></div>Lyndon Johnson, who was <a href="http://www.biography.com/people/lyndon-b-johnson-9356122">born on August 27 1908</a>, was remembered by close advisors and friends long after his 1973 death for a horrifying prank he played on unsuspecting guests at his Stonewall, Texas ranch. 
The prank involved Johnson's Amphicar, the only civilian amphibious car every mass produced, <a href="http://www.nps.gov/lyjo/planyourvisit/presidentialvehicles.htm">according to the National Park Service's website for the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park</a>. 3,878 Amphicar vehicles were built in in Germany during the 1960s in four different colors. Johnson chose Lagoon Blue. On land, the vehicle looked like any ordinary automobile, and the President offered to drive guests around his ranch.
Those leisurely rides created the opportunity for a clever prank that Johnson enjoyed playing on his passengers. It involved barrelling the vehicle down a hill into a lake and exclaiming to his passengers that the brakes had malfunctioned, while they had no idea the car was designed to float in water.
Joseph A. Califano, Jr., the president's special assistant for domestic affairs at the time, recalled his experience as a victim of his boss's prank:
The President, with [<a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=Ixag7Hdf_xMC&amp;pg=PT83&amp;lpg=PT83&amp;dq=vicky+mccammon+lyndon+johnson&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=FMwHOqUrtA&amp;sig=J6KFnXKZDsnUiWktwVAYGttt8bc&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=O-b8U-rkFJShyASjuoDIBA&amp;ved=0CGMQ6AEwCQ#v=onepage&amp;q=vicky%20mccammon&amp;f=false">White House secretary</a>] Vicky McCammon in the seat alongside him and me in the back, was now driving around in a small blue car with the top down. We reached a steep incline at the edge of the lake and the car started rolling rapidly toward the water. The President shouted, "The brakes don't work! The brakes won't hold! We're going in! We're going under!" The car splashed into the water. I started to get out. Just then the car leveled and I realized we were in a Amphicar. The President laughed. As we putted along the lake then (and throughout the evening), he teased me. "Vicky, did you see what Joe did? He didn't give a damn about his President. He just wanted to save his own skin and get out of the car." Then he'd roar. 
Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, John W. Gardner, one of the only Republican cabinet members during Johnson's presidency, <a href="http://autos.aol.com/article/lbjs-amphibious-car-caught-friends-dignitaries-surprise/">was also reportedly a victim of this prank</a>.
The Amphicar was known for its easy transition from land to water. "The process was simple," <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_vault/2013/03/06/photo_lyndon_johnson_drives_in_a_lake_in_his_amphicar.html">Rebecca Onion wrote for Slate</a>. "One: drive the car into the water. Two: engage the two propellers, located under the rear engine compartment. Three: Steer as usual - the wheels acted as stabilizers."

Both figures were basically in line with expectations.But it was one often overlooked metric in the April jobs report that continued reflect a deficiency in the economy.Here's your Monday Scouting Report:Top Stories<ul><li>The minor detail in the jobs report that means everything lately. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/april-jobs-report-may-8-2015-5">Friday's jobs report</a> indicated that average hourly earnings climbed by a measly 0.1% month-over-month in April, which was lower than the modest 0.2% expected by economists. This represents <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/wages-meh-2015-5">a 2.2% annual growth rate</a>. Anemic wage growth has been one of the disappointing themes of the post-financial crisis recovery. For DoubleLine's Jeff Gundlach, this means the Federal Reserve will likely keep interest rates lower for longer. "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gundlach-fed-funds-and-hourly-earnings-growth-2015-5">It's one of the best indicators of the Fed</a>," Gundlach said during <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-gundlach-ny-yacht-club-presentation-2015-5">a presentation on Tuesday at the New York Yacht Club</a>." From UBS's Drew Matus: "We are more inclined to believe the employment cost index as it accounts for incentive pay and workforce composition, both of which are increasingly important factors in the US economy. That series suggests a faster pace of wage growth. Since the start of the year, the growth of high wage jobs has outpaced the growth of low wage jobs."</li></ul><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>Economic Calendar <ul><li>Job Openings &amp; Labor Turnover Survey (Tues): From Credit Suisse: "Job openings rose strongly in February to 5.1M, driving the ratio of vacancies to unemployed workers sharply higher to 0.59, the highest level since November 2007. Measures of job turnover, which tend to lead wage acceleration, are elevated relative to recent years, and remain at levels consistent with a pickup in wage growth over the medium-term." Here's Nomura: "More labor market churn would be indicative of diminishing labor market slack and provide more confidence of sustained improvement in labor market performance. We will keep an eye on the measures within this report, as Fed Chair Yellen has noted their importance in gauging the health of the labor market."</li><li>Retail Sales (Wed): Economists estimate retail sales climbed by 0.2% in April. Excluding autos and gas, sales are estimated to have increased by 0.6%. From BNP Paribas: "Unit auto sales fell considerably in the month, and we expect retail sales on autos to decline accordingly. Seasonally-adjusted gas prices suggest that spending at gasoline stations dropped as well. Still, with impressive income gains recently and prior months' savings from low gasoline prices, we expect households to have spent on other goods and services, boosting control group sales."</li><li>Producer Price Index (Wed): Economists estimate PPI climbed by 0.1% month-over-month in April, while falling 0.8% on a year-over-year basis. Excluding food and energy, core PPI is estimated to have climbed by 0.1% and 1.1%, respectively. Here's Nomura: "A drop in wholesale energy prices in April should weigh on the overall producer price index. Moreover, the price indexes within business surveys have remained low."</li><li>Initial Jobless Claims (Thurs): Economists estimate initial claims climbed to 270,000 from 265,000 a week ago. "Still-low claims spell labor market momentum that contrasts with the recent slowing in payroll growth," UBS's Sam Coffin said.</li><li>Empire Manufacturing (Fri): Economists estimate this regional activity index improved to +5.0 from -1.19 in March. Here's Bank of America Merrill Lynch: "The New York manufacturing sector has slowed notably since last summer, but has remained resilient amid a plethora of shocks over the last half-year. Indeed, the 6-month moving average was 5.4 in April, reflecting modest growth. The stronger dollar will remain a headwind in the near term and lower oil prices are finally feeding into weaker investment, but broad consumer and business fundamentals are still in good shape. On net, we would expect the index to continue trending in low positive single-digit levels and occasionally dip into contraction territory."</li><li>Industrial Production (Fri): Economists estimate production saw no growth in April as capacity utilization was unchanged at 78.4%. From Nomura: "Manufacturing surveys suggested that the manufacturing sector remained sluggish in April. ADP/Moody's reported (in its employment report) that manufacturing and goods employment declined in April. As such, we forecast a fall in production in manufacturing and mining sectors. We also expect to see a slight decline in utilities production in April, as weather was close to historical norm and there was likely less heating demand. We forecast that there was a slight uptick in vehicle production in April, but the declines in production in the other sectors mentioned above were likely larger."</li><li>U. of Mich Sentiment (Fri): Economists estimate this index of sentiment improved to 96.4 in May from 95.9 in April. "Gasoline prices have risen in recent weeks, while equity market volatility has picked up as stock prices have declined," said Barclays economists, who look for a decline to 93.5.
