<ul class="summary-list"><li>On Tuesday, 27 CEOs, including the CEOs of American Express, IBM, and <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, announced the creation of the New York Jobs Council. <keyword id="44660" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="JPMorgan">JPMorgan</keyword> CEO Jamie Dimon, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, and Accenture CEO Julie Sweet will co-chair.</li><li>The goal of the group is to hire 100,000 workers Black, Latino, and Asian, along with low-income workers by 2030.</li><li>25,000 of those jobs will be given to students of The City University of New York, using student support networks to guide job applicants to in-demand professions. </li></ul>On Tuesday, 27 CEOs announced the creation of the <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/27-ceos-launch-the-new-york-jobs-ceo-council-301109612.html">New York Jobs Council</a>. The aim is to hire 100,000 workers from Black, Latino, Asian, and low-income communities within the city. The goal is to have these roles filled by 2030.The companies include American Express, IBM, and Amazon. Jamie Dimon, chief executive of JPMorgan, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, and Accenture CEO, Julie Sweet will be co-chairs of the council. This comes after a summer of calls froth both employees and consumers to make workplaces more diverse and inclusive spaces after the death of George Floyd sparked demonstrations in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-states-response-george-floyd-protests-curfews-national-guard-2020-6">all 50 states.</a>"The economic crisis brought on by COVID-19 has had a disproportionate impact on low-income communities of color, and our recovery starts with investing in them," said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio in a statement. "I'm thankful the New York Jobs CEO Council is joining us to promote economic justice and provide opportunities for our City's diverse workforce. Together, we will build back our economy fairer and stronger than ever before."Even before the pandemic, which has disproportionately affected Black, Latino, and Asian communities, unemployment in the <a href="https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/bronxcountybronxboroughnewyork">Bronx</a> was 85% higher than in <a href="https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/newyorkcountymanhattanboroughnewyork/EDU635218">Manhattan</a>. The Bronx is 43% Black, while Manhattan is 17% Black.The council will team up with The City University of New York (CUNY), to "support student learning and the development of in-demand career pathways." This partnership will provide 25,000 jobs of the 100,000 pledged.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>President Biden is a lifelong public servant, and he's behind in polls for reasons he can't change.</li><li>So, for the sake of the country, Biden has a critical decision to make:</li></ul>President Joe Biden has dedicated almost his entire professional life to serving our country.This summer, he will have another critical opportunity to do that.Specifically, he will have to make a decision that, in my opinion, could determine the future of American democracy.That decision is this:Whether to accept his party's nomination to run for a second term… or step aside and let the Democrats nominate another candidate.Whether or not you believe that "democracy is on the ballot" this fall (or care), you will probably agree that the stakes in this election are unusually high. So, at their convention this summer, the Democrats will want to nominate the strongest possible candidate.Based on recent polls, it does not seem that Biden is necessarily the strongest possible candidate.And even once he finishes sweeping the primaries, Biden does not necessarily have to be the candidate.Because, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://abcnews.go.com/538/biden-trump-suddenly-leaves-2024-race/story?id=106136493">as political experts explain</a>, Biden could still step aside before the Democratic convention this August and allow the Democrats to nominate someone else.So, over the next six months, for the sake of his country — or at the very least the Democratic party and its policy objectives — Biden needs to dispassionately assess whether he is, in fact, the strongest possible candidate. If not, he should step aside.In making this decision, Biden needs to look and think carefully about not what is "true" or "right" or about what he wants most Americans to think, but what Americans actually think.According to recent polls, even in our polarized country, most Americans actually agree about several things.One is that ex-President Trump would do a better job than Biden <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/poll-biden-trump-economy-presidential-race-rcna136834">on the economy</a> (mostly, it seems, because of still-high inflation). Another is that Trump would do <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/poll-biden-trump-economy-presidential-race-rcna136834">better on immigration</a>, another highly visible issue. A third is that most Americans (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/poll-americans-on-biden-age/story?id=107126589">a remarkable 81% of us</a>) think that Biden is too old to run for president. (Most of us think Trump is too old, too, but fewer of us.)In a diverse country, 81% is a startling and resounding consensus.What’s more, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/bidens-age-fitness-top-list-voters-concerns-poll-finds-rcna137212">76% of us have either "major" or "moderate" concerns</a> about Biden’s mental and physical fitness for a second term.Now, maybe all of that is just unfairness or perception. Maybe Americans who think those things are just being stupid or falling for oppositional propaganda or are just being worrywarts.But here’s the thing:When it comes to elections, perception is reality.And, for most voters, our current perception is that Trump is the less bad and less old of two weak candidates that most Americans have deep misgivings about.If, despite Biden’s age, Americans agreed he was doing a bang-up job as president or were thumping Trump in the polls, we could dismiss these concerns.But only <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.reuters.com/graphics/USA-BIDEN/POLL/nmopagnqapa/">37% of us approve</a> of the job Biden is doing.And Biden is now <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.economist.com/united-states/2024/02/04/trumps-lead-over-biden-may-be-smaller-than-it-looks">trailing ex-Pres. Trump in the swing-state polls and losing to him in the betting markets</a>.True — the election is nine months away.True — a lot might change before then, including the polls.But the way things stand today, it looks to many like Biden’s decision to accept the Democratic nomination might affect the future of America’s democracy — and, with it, the Constitution and country that Biden has sworn to protect.Of course, a key factor in deciding whether to step aside is whether there is anyone else the Democrats could nominate who could be a stronger candidate.Polls suggest, for example, that it would be stupid for Biden to step aside so the Democrats can nominate Vice President Kamala Harris because she <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.newsweek.com/kamala-harris-matchup-against-donald-trump-1868650">would do even worse</a> against Trump.But most potential Democratic candidates deferred to Biden's desire to enter the primaries and didn't enter the race, so I don't think we really know yet whether there is a stronger candidate. By nominating someone at the convention, moreover, Democrats can choose the candidate they think has the best chance to win the general election, as opposed to the one that appeals most to Democratic voters in the primaries.As New York Times columnist Ross Douthat <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/10/opinion/joe-biden-convention-2024.html">has explained</a>, it would be better if Biden waited until mid-summer to make (or at least announce) his decision:The next six months would provide time to see whether the polls change meaningfully — a key factor in the analysis. The waiting period would also give the broader Democratic party time to figure out whether anyone else might make a stronger candidate. And it would allow more of Trump's legal trials to play out.If, by early August, the analysis suggests that Biden is, in fact, the strongest candidate, then the best way to serve his country would be to accept the nomination. If, on the other hand, Biden concludes that someone else might have a better chance, he could serve his country better by dropping out.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Over a decade after forming, a Canadian band parted ways with their label and released a new track.</li><li>After multiple attempts to gain traction on TikTok their song went mega viral and became a hit.</li></ul>On May 22, rock band The Beaches posted <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thebeachesband/video/7236113867347201286" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a short clip</a> to their TikTok account which showed their lead singer, Jordan Miller, performing vocals as she recorded their new track "Blame Brett." The four-piece from Toronto, Canada, had already teased the song a few times online with little success, but this time things were different.The video racked up 2.9 million views and over 1,300 comments from viewers who were hooked on the verse and desperate to hear more.The band had been together for over a decade at this point, but had never experienced anything like this. Their song suddenly became a huge hit, amassing hundreds of millions of views on TikTok across various videos, before it soared up the charts on Spotify, and eventually led to a string of stateside, sold-out shows.<h2>The band experimented with a variety of videos hoping one would blow up</h2>In late 2022, The Beaches parted ways with their longtime label Island Records, and spent the first few months of 2023 in the studio creating new music."We wanted the next thing to really kind of be like a breakthrough standout track," Kylie Miller, the lead guitarist and co-founder of the band, and Jordan's sister, told Insider.The group, which is also made up of guitarist and keyboardist Leandra Earl, and Eliza Enman-McDaniel on drums, came up with the concept of a break-up song that addressed how someone might treat their future partners after a split, with a reference to Jordan's ex named Brett, as a personal joke.They knew <a href="https://www.insider.com/tiktoker-the-bun-discovers-aspiring-musicians-sarah-crean-record-label-2023-6">TikTok had the potential to help launch a song</a> and boost ticket sales, and were hoping to have "a little bit of a viral moment," Kylie said, so they started uploading teasers of the track to their account which now has over 113,000 followers.They experimented with different formats to see what would hook people's attention, uploading clips that showed them miming along to the chorus on a rooftop, in a bathroom, and performing it live. Then they tried the same approach with the <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thebeachesband/video/7228771367733218565" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pre-chorus</a> instead, but none of them really took off. It was the low-key, behind-the-scenes TikTok of Jordan recording the verse that skyrocketed the track. "I think people really connect to something that's a little bit more like lo-fi," Kylie told Insider. "They like kind of being a part of how the song gets created and seeing someone do it for real."<h2>They were blown away by the magnitude of the viral reach</h2>The video had been up for a few hours before it suddenly skyrocketed, amassing comments and views at speed, which Kylie said "was really wild to see."The band capitalized on the initial success and continued posting clips featuring the <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thebeachesband/video/7237878928977693958" target="_blank" rel="noopener">track</a> which started to rack up hundreds of thousands of views each. More comments poured in from viewers who wrote that they loved the song and had rushed to the band's Spotify to hear more, and couldn't stop listening. Then TikTokers started uploading the song themselves, using it as background music for their own videos where they <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@greta.onieogou/video/7238441756503723306" target="_blank" rel="noopener">showed off their outfits</a> or <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thevampiresconsort/video/7243945823296490798" target="_blank" rel="noopener">danced along</a>, transforming it into <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/discover/blame-brett" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a hugely popular sound</a> featured in clips that have been viewed over 680 million times.Now in their mid-twenties, The Beaches have been making music since they were in their teens, and were firmly established on home turf in Canada, having won a <a href="https://junoawards.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Winners-list.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year</a> in 2018, then another in 2022 for <a href="https://twitter.com/TheJUNOAwards/status/1525629995347070976" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rock Album of the Year</a>. But breaking into the American market had been a little challenging until their recent social media success propelled them to a broader audience."I don't really understand how the TikTok algorithm works but I'm extremely grateful for it," Kylie told Insider.On June 19, the band posted <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thebeachesband/video/7246229285143416070" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a video</a> reacting to the sudden exposure. It featured an on-screen caption that read, "pov you've been a band for 12 years and your music starts to go viral," and showed all four members jokingly acting flustered and confused while a popular clip from "The Office" played in the background, where character Michael Scott could be heard panicking while telling everyone to stay calm.<h2>The TikTok success directly translated to more ticket sales and streams</h2>Before they blew up, Kylie said they had around 200,000 monthly listeners on <a href="https://open.spotify.com/artist/6ws5XBA70XgeBpnLZhQBoy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Spotify</a>; now they have 1.6 million. "Blame Brett" is the most popular track with 12 million plays alone, and reached <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thebeachesband/video/7240952868692348166" target="_blank" rel="noopener">number two on Spotify's US Viral Chart</a>, and new fans were sticking around to see what else the group could do. "All of our numbers on every song that we've done have gone up," Kylie told Insider. "So it's really kind of just helped us I think get people to discover us who never had before."Kylie noticed the demographic of the fans was shifting too as a direct result of TikTok. Their mostly male, Canadian audience was filling up with younger women, many of whom wrote comments beneath their videos to say the song was helping them through their own heartbreak. The band was <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thebeachesband/video/7267336296161414405" target="_blank" rel="noopener">selling out shows in the US</a> and getting played on US radio too, which Kylie said had never really happened before.A few days after "Blame Brett" was released, the band played at Boston Calling Music Festival in Massachusetts, where fans "erupted" and "started like vibrating," when they played the song, Kylie said. "They were moving so much, it was crazy."Kylie said she gets recognized way more often now when popping out for a coffee as well, and it's usually because people have seen her on TikTok. It was all "a little overwhelming" at first, she said, but the overall success was "something that we wanted to have happened for so long so it felt like so good."In August, "The Beaches" released their latest track "<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thebeachesband/video/7268025260971183366?lang=en">What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Paranoid</a>" and are set to release their full album "Blame My Ex" on September 15. They said they're having fun making more videos on the side to promote their new music in the same way and ride the TikTok wave."It's gonna be more and more a part of what we end up doing," Kylie told Insider.
