Earlier today, RBIs MPC (Monetary Policy Committee) decided to leave the <keyword id="20094323" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="repo-rate" source="keywords">repo rate</keyword> unchanged at 6.5%, while changing the policy stance toward neutral. The aim, as <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="RBI" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="RBI">RBI</keyword> maintained, was to strike a balance between taming domestic <keyword id="19895000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="keywords">inflation</keyword> and maintaining target growth. A neutral stance gives the RBI the flexibility to adjust <keyword id="19950650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interest-rates" source="keywords">interest rates</keyword> based on the direction of inflation, as opposed to its previous stand of withdrawing accommodation, which eliminates any possibility of rate cuts. While a change of stance doesn’t necessarily mean a cut should follow, most experts view this as a prelude to a possible rate cut in December this year, or even February next year. Says Deepak Ramaraju, Senior Fund Manager, Shriram AMC, "The RBI stance has changed to neutral, indicating that its primary focus is to balance growth and inflation. Growth has been resilient and given the short-term pressure on inflation, RBI may continue to hold interest rates unchanged in Q3 FY 2025. Based on inflation moderating below 4.5% and course of geo-political concerns, the RBI may undertake a rate cut decision in Q4 FY 2025". So, what does this mean for your investments? Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities says that the current market texture is volatile, hence level based trading would be the ideal strategy for the day traders. "For the bulls now, 25,050/81,700 would be the key level to watch out. Above the same market could retest the level of 25,200-25,225/82,000-82,300. On the flip side, 24,900/81,200 would be the key support zone for the traders. Below the same, the selling pressure is likely to accelerate. Below the same, market could slip till 24,800-24,780/81,000-80,700", explains Chouhan. <h2>Time to buy a home? Maybe! </h2>No rate cut can spell some good news for homebuyers who are looking to get their hands on real estate during the festive season. Even as home loan rates remain steady as of now, homebuyers may have to wait until December or beyond to get any tangible relief in their home loan EMIs. Vimal Nadar, Head of Research, Colliers India explains that a change in stance from “withdrawal of accommodation” to “neutral” indicates its clear direction for a possible reduction in interest rates in the foreseeable future. This ongoing stability in repo rate should provide a significant thrust to residential real estate during these festive months as home loan interest rates are likely to remain steady. "Typically, Q4, marked by higher inclination of homebuyers to wrap-up property purchases during the auspicious period combined with instantaneous liquidity benefit aided by developers offering attractive discounts, has historically provided the final push to housing sales across the major markets in the country", he added.

RBI leaves repo rate unchanged. What does this mean for you?

Mumbai, Finance minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> on Friday said Indian companies can now go in for direct listing on foreign exchanges as well as on the <keyword id="6367752" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="international-financial-services-centre" source="Orion">International Financial Services Centre</keyword> (IFSC) bourse in Ahmedabad. The nod, which came after three years of announcement as part of the Covid relief package, will enable domestic companies to access foreign funds by listing their shares on various exchanges overseas. A proposal regarding this was first floated as part of the liquidity package announced during the pandemic in May 2020. "A direct listing of securities by domestic companies will now be permissible in foreign jurisdictions. I'm also pleased to announce that the government has taken a decision to enable direct listing of listed and unlisted companies on the IFSC exchange. So, this is a major step forward. This will facilitate access to global capital and better valuation, <keyword id="18177935" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sitharmanan" source="Orion">Sitharmanan</keyword> said here. The minister was speaking at an event to launch <keyword id="18177936" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="amc-repo-clearing" source="Orion">AMC Repo Clearing</keyword> and a corporate debt market development fund to help deepen the corporate bond market. Further, she called for a regulatory impact assessment so that regulated entities in particular and the markets in general can better understand the fallout of their decisions. She also asked financial market regulators to focus on the quality, proportionality and the effectiveness of their decisions so that companies find further ease in doing their business. Urging large municipal bodies to tap the debt market for their funding needs, <keyword id="679937" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sitharaman" source="Orion">Sitharaman</keyword> said the government has been and will continue to incentivise cities to improve their credit ratings so that they get better pricing for their bonds.

Nirmala Sitharaman says Indian companies can go for overseas listing

However, they surrendered early gains to close down 0.5% as subdued RBI commentary on inflation weighed on sentiments. The Sensex fell by 294 points to close at 62,848 while Nifty50 fell by 91 points to 18,634. Kotak Mahindra Bank was the biggest loser on the Sensex, sliding 2.6%. This was followed by Tech Mahindra, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Axis Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, Nestle and Titan. NTPC, Power Grid, Larsen &amp; Toubro, HDFC, Reliance and HDFC Bank were among the gainers. “Sharp correction in the last hour trade pulled down the Sensex below the 63000 mark, as realty shares faltered sharply after the recent upsurge. While rate hike pause by the MPC was on expected lines, subdued commentary by the RBI on inflation for this fiscal year dampened the sentiment. Technically, on daily charts, the Nifty has formed a long bearish candle, which indicates further weakness from the current levels,” said Shrikant Chouhan, head of research (retail) at Kotak Securities, adding that the medium-term formation of the index is still in to the bullish side. The RBI has kept its lending rate, or the repo rate, unchanged at 6.5% and maintained its policy stance of remaining focussed on “withdrawal of accommodation”. Moreover, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das insisted repeatedly that the goal of the central bank is to bring inflation down to 4% in the long run. In this financial year, the reading is unlikely to come below 5% with the projection shaved by only 10 bps in the policy. “The policy repo rate has been raised by 250 basis points since last May and they are still working their way through the system. The fuller effects will be seen in the next few months,” Das said in his speech on Thursday. The RBI also expects India’s GDP to grow at 6.5% in 2023-24, with risks evenly balanced. It estimates the headline inflation for FY24 at 5.1%, which is above RBI’s target of 4%. The inflation situation is evolving, the governor said, with monsoon predictions and the effects of the El Nino phenomenon. “From the equity markets point of view, it is quite clear that the rate hike cycle is over (unless there are major global dislocations) and current policy will not cause any hiccups to the growth trajectory that the country is on. Most of the domestic indicators are looking positive; credit growth despite coming off a high base should also remain resilient and current policy stance will not derail that trajectory,” said Christy Mathai, fund manager - equity at Quantum AMC. On Thursday, gold prices fell ₹38 to ₹59,465 per 10 grams in futures trade as speculators reduced their positions. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold contracts for August delivery traded lower by ₹38 or 0.06% at ₹59,465 per 10 grams in a business turnover of 14,330 lots. The rupee also fell 5 paise to close at 82.57 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 82.59 against the dollar, and finally settled at 82.57 (provisional), down 5 paise from its previous close amid a negative trend in domestic equities. According to <keyword id="630853" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="damani" source="Orion">Damani</keyword>, the Comex Gold has made a high of about $1,935 and a low of about $1,630, while silver on other hand made a high of about $25 and a low of about $18. There are a few factors which triggered volatility in the market like, a move in the Dollar Index and yields, aggressive monetary policy stance from major central banks, rising inflationary concern and geo-political tension, which led to this volatility. Concurring with him are Chirag Mehta, CIO and Ghazal Jain, Fund Manager- Alternative Investments, <keyword id="594214" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="quantum-amc" source="Orion">Quantum AMC</keyword> who said in a report: "Gold prices approached an all-time high of around $2,070 in March on the back of risk aversion triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war. But later, as the geopolitical risk premium waned coupled with the Federal Reserve's tightening spree to combat sky-high inflation, prices faced heavy downside pressure." Pointing out the repo rate hikes by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the <keyword id="6356435" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-federal-reserve" source="Orion">US Federal Reserve</keyword>, the two experts said the action resulted in the flight of money from risky assets to the US dollar as the real interest rates (indicated by US 10Y Treasury Inflation Protected Securities) turned positive for the first time in two years in May 2022. "This led to a sell-off in gold taking prices down to a two-and-a-half-year low of $1,614. However, as inflation started to moderate sequentially in Q4 2022, investors started anticipating a less aggressive <keyword id="45672" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fed" source="Orion">Fed</keyword> in 2023, and the dollar came under pressure helping gold prices to scale back up," the Quantum AMC report said. "Stepping into 2023, we can't be sure if this reaction is justified given that inflation in the US remains well above the Fed's two per cent target, and the Fed has made it clear that while the pace of rate hikes could slow down from here on, but the slower pace does not mean lower rates which the markets had started anticipating," the Quantum AMC officials said. According to the Quantum AMC report, there can be another 50-75 basis points hike in the first half of 2023 by the US Fed which in turn could result in bouts of volatility in both risk assets and gold as real rates rise in an environment of cooling inflation and higher nominal rates. Damani said the gold's domestic story is quite different, as even after such macro happenings there was not a great on the MCX, amidst factors like sharp depreciation in the rupee coupled with a hike in basic customs duty by five per cent on gold. He said 2022 has definitely given a boost in market participants' confidence as to gold and silver. Along with Russia-Ukraine tensions, inflationary concerns and the Covid scare in China, market participants will also carry the baggage regarding slower global growth into the next year, Damani said. "Going ahead, market participants will keenly focus on the monetary policy stance of major central bankers. A move in the Dollar Index and Yields will also be watched by the market. The gold/silver ratio has also fallen from the recent peak of about 97 to about 75, supporting the move in silver. And also apart from safe-haven bets, advancement in green technology and increase in industrial demand could continue to support silver prices," Damani remarked. According to him, there seems some signs of exhaustion in gold and silver and dips could be used as buying opportunities for any medium-to-long-term investor for the target of Rs 58,000 in gold and Rs 73,000 followed by 82,000 in silver. Gold & silver markets most likely to see signs of exhaustion in 2023

The central bank expects inflation to remain elevated for next 12 months. The central bank’s stance has also dampened sentiments. RBI has maintained a stance as 'withdrawal of accommodation'. The market will now shift to growth, as rate hikes are not yet over. RBI governor Shaktikanta Das said that, “Over the next 12 months, inflation is expected to remain higher than the inflation 4% target.” Further, Das added that RBI would keep ‘Arjuna’s eye on inflation’. Also, the central bank cut its real GDP growth forecast for 2022-23 to 6.8% from 7% earlier. “Even after this revision in our growth projection for 2022- 23, India will still be among the fastest growing major economies in the world,” he said. Benchmark index <keyword id="6484188" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sensex" source="Orion">Sensex</keyword> was down by more than 200 points after the policy announcement at 62,424 while the 50-stock Nifty was 71 points lower at 18,574. Repo is the rate at which the central bank lends short-term funds to banks. “RBI raised the repo rate by 35 basis points, which is in line with expectations, but the tone of the governor was hawkish. With the GDP forecast cut, he kept the inflation forecast at 5.7%. The market was expecting the governor to signal that the rate hike cycle is coming to an end, but this policy shows no signs of it. However, the market is not reacting much to the policy. It may not be a market event with intraday volatility,” said Parth Nyati, founder at Tradingo. expect one more rate hike starting next year as RBI’s fight against inflation continues. “The Governor made it clear that the fight against inflation will continue, while India's growth remains more resilient.
