But, then again, so was Amazon when it initially launched in India. The American e-commerce giant has been able to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnkoetsier/2018/05/18/report-amazon-india-worth-16b-with-30-market-share-will-hit-70b-gmv-in-2027/#699b8a36b952">capture</a> one-third of the market in its five years in India. The symbiosis with Reliance Jio and its 300 million <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/tech/jio-fastest-global-operator-to-reach-300-million-users-revenue-grows-92-7-percent-yoy-2108289.html">users</a> also makes it easier for Ambani to penetrate the market and take advantage of its strong customer engagement — reportedly with 10.9GB of average day consumption per user. Ambani’s plan also factors in the rural users — one segment of the population that Amazon and Flipkart have been having a hard time bringing online to shop. Jio Point Stores are being put up in over 5,000 towns to bring in last mile connectivity for shoppers who live in rural areas. Not only will that increase connectivity but allow Reliance to cater to new customers that are first-time users or don’t have an internet connection at all. Reliance Retail has already been testing the e-commerce portal in Gujarat where it already has an offline network of 1.2 million local shopkeepers. The facts Physical retailers — with the brick-and-mortar stores— are the immediate benefactors. The new rules are expected to boost sales for offline vendors by taking away the discounts available to consumers online. CRISIL estimates that it could increase revenue for offline retailers by ₹100 billion to ₹120 billion by 2020. Just as the loss of business for e-commerce is the gain for retail chains, the advantage is usually with the larger players in the space — because of the sheer scale, reach and resources at their disposal. And the largest of them all is Reliance Retail. “The impact on e-tailers would be largely in the electronics and apparel segments, which account for a bulk of their revenues,” says Anuj Sethi, the senior director at CRISIL Ratings. Coincidentally, 34% of Reliance Retail’s revenue comes from its electronics arm — Reliance Digital. It’s also the largest holder of foreign brand licences for apparel in India. Some of its top brands include Diesel, Hamleys, Kenneth and Steve Madden. Reliance Retail’s offline avatar served 3.5 million customers a week through 9,146 stores across 5,800 cities as of September 2018. The timing There is no doubt that online retail still has a lot of potential in India. Nasscom and PricewaterCoopers (PwC) estimate that the market will balloon to $150 billion by 2022. Now, he is looking to expand the offerings beyond apparel, with a pilot programme in the state of Gujarat. Before Ambani’s entry, Amazon had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/amazon-takes-the-fight-to-walmart-by-investing-another-27-billion-in-india/articleshow/65404423.cms">invested over $4.7 billion</a> in India over the last six years, primarily because it identified the potential of a market with a population of nearly a billion and half people. For the same reason, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indian-unicorn-flipkarts-board-approves-15-billion-deal-with-walmart/articleshow/64027810.cms">Walmart bought Flipkart</a> in 2018 for a whopping sum of $15 billion, paying a heavy premium for joining the game late. Over the years, Amazon, Flipkart and other early birds have burnt billions of dollars giving discounts, getting people used to shopping online and creating a market. Then, the government revised its policy on foreign direct investment (FDI) in e-commerce on December 26, 2018, changing the rules of the game, which would bring the likes of Amazon and Walmart on a level playing field with new entrants. Less than a month later, Mukesh Ambani took the stage at the investor summit Vibrant Gujarat and unveiled his plan to expand his online retail business. The government’s new e-commerce rules are essentially trying to protect India’s retailers — including Reliance Retail — from the deep discounts offered by e-commerce giants. That is how Ambani’s physical stores gain. What’s more, as a new entrant to e-commerce, going against established players with equally deep pockets, Ambani will not have to burn money through discounts. In fact, he is not allowed to. He gets a level-playing field to fight established giants like Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart, at no extra cost. The spin Ambani had his own spin on why the change in rules was justified. "In this new world, data is the new oil. And data is the new wealth. India's data must be controlled and owned by Indian people and not by corporates, especially global corporations,” Ambani said at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2018. He was alluding to the fact that two biggest e-commerce companies in India are owned by foreigners, and they have access to priceless data on Indian consumer behaviour. Even people from the government echoed the ‘nationalistic’ spin to the story that Ambani offered. “We don’t want to build walls, but at the same time, we explicitly recognize and appreciate that data is a strategic asset,” Aruna Sundararajan, the nation’s secretary of telecommunications said last year at a press conference. The other view can be equally convincing to Ambani’s critics. John Elliott, the author of “Implosion: India’s tryst with reality” begs to differ. “The idea that Reliance is any safer at protecting Indian people’s data than Amazon or Walmart is ludicrous,” Elliott told Business Insider. From groceries to fruits and vegetable sellers, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mukesh-ambani-owned-reliance-vs-vodafone-idea-vs-airtel-vs-bsnl-january-to-april-2019-subscriber-data/articleshow/69928185.cms">Reliance Jio'</a>s 'Hybrid Online-to-Offline' platform is currently in beta testing stage with pilot projects underway in Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. Online inventory management The platform is going to be a mobile app that merchants can sign up for once they're Jio Prime members. From the app, they will be able to place orders for fruits, vegetables and other groceries to sell at their store. Essentially, the app will be able to manage a particular retailer's entire inventory through the portal including a software tool for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/gst-tax-rate-cuts-cost-india-900-billion/articleshow/70022754.cms">goods and services tax</a> (GST) and options to run promotional programmes like loyalty coupons. Once pilot projects are completed, the company reportedly plans to move the app onto Reliance's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/reliance-jios-app-crosses-10-million-downloads/articleshow/54482294.cms">MyJio</a> app making space for a B2C interface so that merchants can then sell supplies from their store directly to customers. Reliance is already a big player in the offline retail space and even <a href="https://www.ril.com/getattachment/b9a51ff7-41b4-421c-bf35-c589cbc66eb6/Financial%20Presentation%20-%20Q4%20Results.aspx">reported</a> an 89% jump in its income from ₹69,198 crore in 2017-18 to ₹130,556 crore in 2018-19. According to the company, it's the first retail giant in the country to have more than 10,000 stores in over 6,600 cities. Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail wants to beat Big Bazaar and More before taking on Flipkart and Amazon

<ul><li><keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>’s <keyword id="35621" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> venture is heading for an October launch with an O2O model.</li><li>This model is similar to <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword>’s approach in China, which resulted in huge success. </li><li><keyword id="10926" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance">Reliance</keyword> Retail and Alibaba were also in talks for a deal for the former’s latest e-commerce venture.</li></ul>Mukesh Ambani’s much awaited e-commerce venture is all set to go live during the auspicious Diwali festival. According to <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/reliance-might-launch-ecommerce-venture-around-diwali-with-kirana-stores-onboard/">reports</a>, Reliance will be taking the offline-to-online (O2O) business model to bring kirana shops on board, to deliver groceries online. The O2O venture will bring thousands of kirana shops online. This strategy is strikingly similar to that of Alibaba in China, before it became a global sensation. Interestingly, Reliance Retail and Alibaba were also in talks for a deal, as the Chinese major was expected to invest in Ambani’s e-commerce venture. However, the talks fell through. The O2O model seems to be a tried and tested model for e-commerce players. Paytm Mall which has burnt its hands in the e-commerce world once, made a quick turnaround with the O2O model. The company ended the last financial year with a Gross Merchandising Value (GMV) of ₹130 billion, and is now aiming for ₹170 billion GMV by 2022. At the recent Reliance AGM, the company had announced an immersive shopping experience using mixed reality (augmented reality and virtual reality combined) for Reliance Fibre subscribers. Ambani is not short of suitors for his next-gen ideas either. It was earlier reported that global e-retail giant Amazon is looking to acquire a 26% stake in Reliance Retail. However, Amazon went ahead and struck a similar deal with Kishore Biyani’s Biyani’s Future Coupons. This company is the promoter of Future Retail, and Amazon will indirectly have ownership of the vast group of offline retail chains including Big Bazaar. Reliance Retail has 10,644 stores across 6,700 cities, with 100 million registered loyalty customers, and saw 150 million footfalls in their stores in the previous year. Reliance Retail posted robust pre-tax profits in the first quarter of 2019-20 as its revenues grew by around 70% to ₹2,049 crore. In the same quarter, it was at ₹1,206 crore last year.

Reliance's e-commerce venture is looking to replicate Alibaba's success in India

Global investment firm Morgan Stanley’s research has shown that it actually doubles. With the average ‘maturity’ of Indian online shoppers standing at 3.3 years today, there’s only scope for growth of Indian e-commerce. According to a <a href="https://www.pwc.in/assets/pdfs/industries/retail-and-consumer/retail-report-300812.pdf">report</a> done by FICCI and PwC on Indian e-commerce, the Indian retail market is expected to cross $1.3 trillion by 2020. The smartphone penetration in the country has led to the increase in <keyword id="6357762" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-shopping">online shopping</keyword>. A <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/retail/number-of-online-shoppers-to-surpass-120-million-in-2018/articleshow/64718407.cms">study</a> done by ASSOCHAM shows that the increase in Indian e-commerce comes from “phone shoppers” from the country’s Tier II and III cities. It is this market opportunity that has brought in the bigwigs of global retail to set up shop in India. Over half of India's 120 million shoppers may double their spend this year

Brewing the fight are two masterminds – <keyword id="191583" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jeff-Bezos">Jeff Bezos</keyword> and Mukesh Ambani – both of whom want a piece of the large pie that can arise from engaging India’s 500 million internet users. At the annual general meeting of Reliance Industries, Ambani demonstrated how he wants to take over each one of Amazon’s segments. Shopping for India’s internet users Ambani has interesting ammunition. For one, he has over 340 million customers for his telecom service. Added to that, he is planning to get more...around 500 million by providing fixed broadband service at every nook and corner of the country. Reliance Retail which is expected to launch its e-commerce offering by October, also showed a sneak peak into what they have in store for shoppers. Reliance's fibre customers will offer an immersive shopping experience using mixed reality (augmented reality and virtual reality combined). Ambani’s children Isha and Akash also demonstrated a shopping experience with Jio’s augmented reality advancements, where a 3D hologram of the user will help the shopper try on different colours of the garment. This is not good news for Amazon which holds 30% of the Indian e-commerce market, and has plans to grow. Amazon too has been experimenting with virtual reality. During the Prime Day sale, Amazon had set up virtual reality experience zones for consumers. But looks like Reliance will lure its existing fibre customers into its own shopping zones. Ambani also said that Reliance will offer end-to-end digital stack to "enable and empower" small merchants. Today, Amazon too launched The Amazon Marketplace Appstore in India, a platform created for sellers to discover trusted third-party applications that can help them automate, grow and manage their business. Building businesses on cloud One of Amazon’s biggest businesses is its Amazon Web Service finds clients with the bigwigs of the tech industry in the country who use its cloud services to build their businesses. AWS has also partnered with Wipro to set up co-innovation centres in India. Ambani has entered this business too. He joined hands with Microsoft. Satya Nadella made a surprise cameo at the AGM via video feed to announce Jio’s partnership with Microsoft Azure. “Jio will build new custom solutions on Microsoft Azure for large enterprises who have already benefited from our technology platforms. Companies will also have easy and affordable access to best-in-class technologies like data analytics, AI, cognitive services, blockchain, IoT and edge computing to accelerate India’s digital transformation and enable grassroots innovation,” said Microsoft. Prime vs Jio, Indian OTT’s new war Amazon’s content platform Prime Video launched in 2016 and has since then stirred up the OTT competition in India, moving up against Netflix, Hotstar among others. Prime Video has seen multiple original web content series from India like Made in Heaven, Inside Edge which have become big hits. And now, Jio has a strong strategy to disrupt the OTT space in India. Jio Fibre services will come bundled with ‘most-premium OTT applications’. Not only that, premium subscribers of Reliance Fibre will also be able to watch movies on the very same day they release in theatres, taking away Amazon Prime’s sweet spot. Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio is taking on Jeff Bezos’ Amazon in e-commerce, cloud, and content

Almost everything could be sold on Internet now. Keeping this development in mind, <keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword> is about to borrow Rs 4,500 crore to build its <keyword id="436047" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ecommerce">eCommerce</keyword> business. It also plans to open new stores to counter rivals’ expansion in the rapidly growing eCommerce business in India. 
 
The Mukesh Ambani-controlled retail company would borrow the amount through term loans and debentures. 
 
"Reliance Retail is growing rapidly and these are enabling provisions to fund a growing and profitable business," a spokesperson told the Economic Times. "The funds will be utilised, as appropriate, for business operations." 
 
Reliance Retail's revenue rose 21% to Rs 17,640 crore in FY15 with profit after tax of Rs 193 crore. The company became the country's largest retailer in FY14. 
 The company will avail term loans to the tune of Rs 2,500 crore from <keyword id="6354731" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="State-Bank-Of-India">State Bank of India</keyword> and raise another Rs 2,000 crore by issuing convertible debentures, it said in board resolutions filed with the Registrar of Companies last week. 
 
The eCommerce business is expected to grow fourfold to almost $70 billion, or about Rs 4.34 lakh crore by 2019. Reliance Retail is piloting an online site for food and grocery products. 
 "The potential of ecommerce combined with the network of physical store locations will offer tremendous choice and convenience at a great value to the consumer," parent <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance industries</keyword> said in its latest annual report. 
 The move is part of <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>'s wider strategy of placing its communications venture Reliance Jio Infocomm at the intersection of "telecom, web and digital commerce" as he said at the company's annual general meeting last year. 
 The ecommerce business is booming in India, with companies such as Flipkart, Amazon and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> winning Indian consumers by offering heavy discounts across products. 
 
Experts said Reliance Retail's deep pockets and existing logistics infrastructure will help it in the ecommerce space. 
 
Increase in Internet access through affordable smartphones and efforts by online retailers to develop payment channels such as cash on delivery, mobile wallets and streamlined logistics infrastructure are expected to boost ecommerce growth in the country.
