<ul><li><keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> is creating these new job opportunities on top of the 33,000 corporate and technology jobs announced last week.</li><li>The new roles announced on Monday offer a starting wage of at least $15 per hour, and in select cities Amazon is offering sign-on bonuses up to $1,000 to new hires.</li></ul>Amazon on Monday said it is hiring 100,000 new full-time and part-time employees in its warehouse and logistics network across the US and Canada amid a surge in online shopping due to Covid-19 restrictions. Amazon is creating these new job opportunities on top of the 33,000 corporate and technology jobs announced last week. The new roles announced on Monday offer a starting wage of at least $15 per hour, and in select cities Amazon is offering sign-on bonuses up to $1,000 to new hires. "We are opening 100 buildings this month alone across new fulfillment and sortation centres, delivery stations and other sites," Dave Clark, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations at Amazon, said in a statement. "We are proud to be hiring 100,000 new associates with pay of $15 per hour or more across those buildings and in our network. Our expansion also comes with an unwavering commitment to safety," Clark said. Amazon has faced lawsuits accusing the company of not putting in place enough measures to prevent spread of Covid-19 in warehouses. The e-commerce giant said it expects to invest approximately $4 billion on Covid-related initiatives getting products to customers and keeping employees safe. "Collectively, our new team members have already completed more than 1,200,000 hours of safety training, with over 500,000 more hours expected, to ensure that in addition to fast and efficient delivery for our customers, we're providing a safe and modern environment for our employees and partners," Clark said. Amazon has already opened over 75 new fulfillment, sortation centers, regional air hubs, and delivery stations in the US and Canada in 2020 to serve customers. Since 2010, Amazon has directly created more than 600,000 jobs in the US across its corporate offices and operations sites, and invested more than $350 billion across more than 40 states, including infrastructure and compensation. Amazon has more than 875,000 employees worldwide. Amazon says it is hiring 100,000 employees in the US and Canada

<ul><li><keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> has doubled its network and capacity to make deliveries during the Diwali sale.</li><li>The e-commerce giant is bullish on sales for the upcoming festive sales season despite the economic slowdown and e-commerce restrictions.</li><li>Amazon has also opened up three large delivery stations this year in Chennai, Pune and Hyderabad.</li></ul>Amazon India is busy preparing for the upcoming festive season in India— Diwali — which is a traditional bonanza season for all retailers. Despite the economic slowdown plaguing the Indian economy and the restrictions on e-commerce — like limitations on deep discounting — Amazon remains bullish on its outlook for the season. "We have always been excited by Diwali. Every year we have expanded our network. Every year we have been bullish and this year, again, we have been bullish about how customers are going to come and shop with us," Akhil Saxena, the Vice President of Customer Fulfillment at Amazon India told Business Insider. Why Diwali’s a big deal for Amazon The Diwali season is a big deal for Amazon because it’s the biggest festive season of the year. It’s not only a prime time for Amazon sales but also an optimal period for sellers and brands to launch new products, according to the company. "This is a time when a lot of sellers and brands bring in unique selections for customers. This is a time we also have new exclusive launches happen," explained Saxena. Amazon’s ready to take on more orders "We believe that this is going to be the biggest shopping period for Amazon in India," stated Saxena. In anticipation, Amazon India doubled its capacity and network to get products from one end of the country to the other. From 700 delivery stations across 350 cities last year, Amazon’s seller network has now expanded to 1,400 delivery stations across 700 cities. A lot of this expansion has been focused on getting last mile connectivity to some of the more "remote" and "deeper parts" of India — Tier 4 and 5 locations like Anand, Cuddapah, Azamgarh, Kodagu, and Solan. Even fleet trucks that will haul the deliveries from the seller’s city to the customer’s city has been doubled to 10,000 trucks on the road on a daily basis, connecting over 1000 cities, according to the company. For longer distances, Amazon has also increased its air capacity 1.6 times. "We have done this with three objectives in mind. The first one is to widen our reach. Secondly, to provide faster deliver promises. And thirdly, to improve the delivery experience for our customers and sellers," explained Saxena. Amazon’s creating its own footprint Amazon’s delivery network operates through third-party couriers. Only 200 out of the 1,400 delivery stations are owned by Amazon exclusively. But, this year, Amazon has expanded to three large delivery stations — a switch from the company’s usual strategy of investing in smaller delivery stations that are normally between 2,000 to 7,000 square feet. Now it has delivery stations as large as 20,000 square feet in Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune. Amazon India however has many dangers lurking around the corner — not just a dull economy. Flipkart has its Big Billion Days Sale coming up soon. In the long run, Jio is foraying into the e-commerce sector, and has also promised to disrupt it.

Amazon bullish on Diwali sales, doubling its delivery network amid economic slowdown and e-commerce restrictions

The company has already started looking for 70-80 square foot space in malls, Economic Times <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/retail/offline-push-amazon-plans-100-mall-kiosks/articleshow/68571696.cms">reported</a> citing sources. These kiosks typically sell devices such as the Kindle ebook reader, the Echo speaker and the Fire TV dongle. The company is also hoping to get a push for its entry into brick-and-mortar stores in India with this move. Amazon started experimenting with kiosks in India when it opened its first retail store in Bengaluru in May 2017. It then introduced four more stores — two in Bengaluru, one in Mumbai, one in Ahmedabad. According to the report , the kiosks will be operated by a third party. In 2017, Amazon received the Indian government’s approval to sell locally-produced and packaged items through its online as well as offline channels. Additionally, Amazon is also planning to venture into brick-and-mortar stores in India similar to that in the US. Currently, Amazon sells food items in India through its website amazon.in. The move to open additional kiosks is in contrast with Amazon’s recent decision to close over 80 pop-up stores in the US as part of its broader retail strategy. In order to be compliant with India’s new e-commerce rules — that bars e-commerce companies from selling products supplied by affiliate companies on their shopping sites — Amazon is going to start selling via vendors instead of selling directly to customers <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/internet/amazon-plans-wholesale-makeover-to-become-ecommerce-fdi-compliant/67826264">according</a> to a report by ETtech. If Cloudtail and Appario were to become wholesale vendors instead, then they would only be supplying their products to third-party ‘prefered’ vendors through Amazon Business in India — Amazon’s Indian B2B marketplace. These third-party ‘preferred’ vendors would then sell those products on the Amazon India portal. Every wholesale vendor has the right to pick its preferred retailer for the products they are selling. Sources told ETtech that Amazon hasn’t completely set aside the idea to sell off its stake to order to comply with the new guidelines, but the wholesale route is a faster process, it will comply with the new forms and Amazon still continues to enjoy the value from the both the companies. The good news for consumers is that items supplied by Amazon will still be available on the site. Category managers at Amazon india are currently figuring out which vendors are ‘preferred’ sellers for each of the brand’s categories. The Amazon Echo smart speakers are still on sale, even though Appario is no longer the supplier. Other brands should be live in the marketplace soon once the business model has been realigned. The new guidelines were issues on December 26 after which, both e-commerce giants — Walmart and Amazon — teamed up to seek an extension of the February 1 deadline but with no success. Amazon may have found a way around India’s new e-commerce rules

Ecommerce giant Amazon is in a tough fight with the commercial tax department of Karnataka. In a yet to be settled case, the deadlock involves VAT for certain transactions by Amazon India. As per a news report by The Economic Times, the department laid down two conditions to the Indian arm of the Seattle-headquartered ecommerce giant as an alternative to being registered as a dealer. Firsty, Amazon India must disclose details of transactions carried out on its website and secondly, it must take primary liability if a merchant defaults paying value-added tax on transactions executed on Amazon. 
 
While Amazon has no problem with the first demand, it has declined the second, senior government officials told the financial daily. The two conditions implied that VAT authorities would want to treat Amazon India as a "commission agent" -- a status the online marketplace is not willing to accept in view of federal regulations that bar foreign direct investment in online retail. 
The Commercial Taxes department began working on a solution after Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah recently asked it to sort out issues flagged by the US firm. The company's dealer-expansion efforts in Bengaluru have been grounded the past one year after VAT authorities stopped issuing branch certificates to merchants wanting to partner with Amazon. 
 
The deal offered by the tax department also required Amazon to prove if VAT had been paid for a certain transaction if the department raised a claim. At a meeting with top tax officials, Amazon India executives held on to the argument that their core activity in India included providing modern warehousing facilities for merchants to store products, display and provide a technology-enabled online marketplace for those products, and facilitate online sale and receipt payment on the merchant's behalf, among other things. Since each partner-merchant is a VAT assessee, and required to remit VAT collected every month, Amazon executives said it cannot get into those aspects. 
 
According to tax experts, the workaround the Commercial Taxes department has suggested will only transfer VAT officials' job to the online retailer. 
 
Also, a merchant on Amazon's digital marketplace is required to pay VAT only on the value-added part of his transaction as he can claim input tax credits on purchases already made. But in the event of a default, Amazon India will not be able to claim input tax credit as it will not have access to a merchant's transaction history, and will have to pay VAT on the full sale price of a product.

Making a virgin industry grow and match upto Indian consumers’ psyche requires tremendous strategizing and reaching out to more people. Flipkart and Amazon India are deploying strategies to reach out to local merchants in cities and towns. According to a news report by The Economic Times, the two market leaders in the eCommerce industry have realized that delivery strategies are becoming a crucial front in curbing costs and winning customers. 
 
Amazon deployed carts offering free tea, cold water and lemon juice to retailers, business owners, sellers and small and medium enterprises in Panchkula, a small town in Haryana where it began a pilot last week of this initiative. 
 
"Each 'Amazon Chai Cart' has an Amazon-trained person who holds discussions with interested sellers on the process of selling online, introduces them to seller-specific services like FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon), Amazon Easy Ship, and also introduces them to Amazon. in's seller education programs,” Amit Deshpande, directorseller services at Amazon India told the ET. 
'Fulfillment' is where Amazon handles delivery of product stored at its warehouses, as against merchants handling deliveries. Easy Ship is a delivery service wherein orders are picked up from a sellers by an Amazon logistics partner and delivered to buyers. 
 
Flipkart, India's largest electronic marketplace, has established training centres in small towns to help local merchants sell online. "A large focus area for us is the creation of a network of local partners who help sellers and facilitate their business needs like catalogue creation, manpower and training, packaging and lending," Ankit Nagori, senior vice president marketplace, at Flipkart told the financial daily. 
 
Hyper Local Formula 
Hyper-local strategies are becoming central to online marketplaces in India as they struggle to contain delivery costs and schedules. Currently, online retailers take at least 3-4 days to deliver a package, at an average cost of Rs 70 per kg of shipment. 
 
With an ambition to reach out to smaller towns also has become imperative as about 13 million of 53 million digital buyers reside in small cities and towns, the non-metros. About 69 million of India's 232 million active internusers reside in rural India, as per a study by the Internet and Mobile Association of India. 
 
Currently, Flipkart and Amazon charge extra for delivering products the same day or the next after an order is placed for products lying in their warehouses. With companies adopting hyper-local strategies this can be obviated.

Ecommerce giant <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> is applying for the media rights to broadcast <keyword id="6354831" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Premier-League">Indian Premier League</keyword> (<keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword>). According to a news report, this move is aimed at strengthening Amazon’s footing in India. 
 <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> is satisfied with the response it has been drawing so far after it announced on last Sunday the sale of the IPL rights - broadcast and digital for ten and five years respectively - to be sold individually or in a bundle for the next designated period, as per The Times Of India. 
 Amazon founded by <keyword id="191583" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jeff-Bezos">Jeff Bezos</keyword> which has more than a dozen global subsidiaries, is the first among interested overseas parties that has picked up the Invitation To Tender. Sources tracking developments say BCCI expects the global market to show keen interest in the digital rights of the IPL and Amazon picking the tender at the first available opportunity is an indicator of the same. "Everybody's talking about the possibility of the IPL rights battle being between Star and Sony. But our guess is there are going to be surprises in store," a source in the know of things told TOI.

Besides, there is also an ongoing fight for the third spot between <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> Mall and <keyword id="6357066" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ShopClues">ShopClues</keyword>, while <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> has come down to fifth place in terms of volumes. In March, Flipkart registered an average of five lakh shipments daily, whereas <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> reported nearly 4.5 lakh shipments every day. ET quoted sources saying Snapdeal saw its volumes dip significantly to 30,000 a day from a high of 1.5 lakh daily shipments in March 2016. Flipkart's strong gains come from major categories such as fashion and smartphone segment. It saw 57% rise in smartphone category in first quarter of 2017. While Amazon India had a 27% share, according to data from Counterpoint Research. In the whole of 2016, Amazon increased its share to 31% in this category while Flipkart slipped to 44%, the research firm said. "While higher GMV means more sales, higher orders mean more customers or more orders from the same customers, both are desirable for the sizeable growth of the industry," Krishna Choudhury, senior business analyst at RedSeer Consulting, told ET. "Flipkart continues to remain ahead of Amazon India in terms of gross sales," sources in the know how told ET. "We continue to see tremendous momentum despite our scale, growing at about 85% in Q1 this year. We cannot offer comment on any other financial details," a representative for Amazon India told the news daily. Meanwhile, the battle may heat up if talks of Snapdeal buyout to Flipkart become true. "Marketplaces will look to increase the commissions earned from merchants as well as from chargeable services to consumers, reducing operational costs (including manpower), and rationalising marketing expenditure whose efficacy isn't really being monitored," Devangshu Dutta, chief executive at consulting firm Third Eyesight who expects 2017 to be a year of consolidation, told ET.

Yesterday, <a href="https://factordaily.com/amazon-future-group/">news broke</a> that <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> was planning to buy a 10% stake in the <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> arm of Future Group, an Indian conglomerate headed by Kishore Biyani. The move highlights Amazon India’s ambitions in the brick-and-mortar retail space, and follows its acquisition of a 5% stake in Shoppers Stop last September. Given that foreign companies are barred from directly investing in India’s multi-brand retail space, as <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> knows all too well, Amazon has to make its investment through an entity that is registered as a foreign portfolio investor. It is also limited to a 10% stake. Talks between the two companies commenced <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/retail/kishore-biyani-explores-future-groups-journey-with-amazon/articleshow/62798408.cms">in January</a>. The $600 million deal, if it goes through, will be significant for India’s retail market. Future Retail Ltd includes the company’s Big Bazaar, Easyday and Foodhall brand of supermarkets. The companies already have <a href="https://www.amazon.in/b?ie=UTF8&amp;node=8520579031">a strategic alliance</a> in place, wherein Amazon sells clothes on its online platform from Future Retail’s fashion brands. With the deal, Amazon can give Future Retail’s <keyword id="35621" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> and sourcing operations a leg up while gaining access to the latter’s extensive customer base and supply chain network. Amazon wants to expand its grocery businesses in India and a tie-up with Future Retail, which sources a large portion of its sales from the food and grocery segment, can achieve that. Amazon’s potential consolidation of a multi-channel approach to India’s retail market, with a special focus on grocery, comes hot on the heels of US competitor Walmart’s $16 billion acquisition of <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, India’s largest e-commerce firm. Walmart, <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/walmart-flipkart-deal-signals-churn-in-e-grocery/1174255/">which has its own plans for India’s food and grocery market</a>, is also said to be in talks to buy a stake in Future Retail, although sources revealed that Amazon was a frontrunner. The Whole Foods acquisition The move echoes Amazon’s retail strategy in the US, where it’s fending off Walmart’s entry into e-commerce by expanding into physical retail. In June 2017, Amazon agreed to buy Whole Foods Inc, a food supermarket chain with an entirely physical presence, for <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/16/business/dealbook/amazon-whole-foods.html">$13.4 billion</a>. While this was partly an attempt to take on the giant Walmart in the brick-and-mortar retail space, it also showed Amazon’s intent to become a bigger force in the food and grocery market. It realised that there was still a sizeable amount of customers who preferred buying their food in person. By combining its online and physical presence, Amazon wanted to provide customers in the US with a variety of channels to purchase groceries and other items - just like it plans to do in India. But the plan in the US wasn’t just limited to groceries. It wanted to start selling groceries offline, and then use that as a launchpad for selling everything that is non-perishable to customers. The battle comes to India It was clear with Amazon’s counter-offer for Flipkart that Amazon and Walmart are gearing for another faceoff in India. With a lot of cash at their disposal, both companies will exploit a number of retail channels in the race to sales and customer growth. Amazon has already got it’s online grocery business in India <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/amazon-food-retail-pune/">off the ground,</a> and now it will look to one-up Walmart and make inroads in the physical retail space. As has been said before, one thing is for certain. It is Indian consumers who stand to benefit most from this competition in the short term. Not only will all kinds of products be more accessible than ever before, they will be cheaper. However, the freedom of choice isn’t going to last forever. There will be more acquisitions, and Flipkart and Amazon India will get bigger and smaller players will be eaten up. One company will likely edge the other out. And then we’ll be totally dependent on the winner.
