<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword> user <a href="https://www.instagram.com/carteruno/">@carteruno</a>, who goes by Mr. Carter on the app, posted a video of his encounter with a white woman who called him the N-word and accused him of "stealing" from her.</li><li>The 34-year-old father says he was picking up his children from his aunt's home when he parked in a resident-designated parking spot outside the apartment complex, drawing the ire of the elderly resident.</li><li>In the clip, the woman calls the police and defends her "constitutional right" to use racial slurs while Carter remains composed.</li><li>An officer responded to the call, ultimately expressing disbelief when Carter relayed the details of the altercation.</li><li>Commenters are praising Carter for his behavior during the tense situation.</li></ul><p>As social-media users continue to capture and post video footage of racist altercations, one father is sharing his experience of being accosted by a white woman who used the N-word and called the police over a parking spot.</p><p>The Instagram user <a href="https://www.instagram.com/carteruno/">@carteruno</a>, who goes by Mr. Carter on the platform, posted a video of an encounter with an elderly resident in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Highland, California, just east of San Bernardino. The video has since garnered attention from outraged viewers, the <a href="https://www.dailydot.com/irl/san-bernardino-karen-video/">Daily Dot reported</a>.</p><p>In the 10-minute clip, which appeared to follow an earlier, unfilmed altercation, the woman accused the 34-year-old of "stealing" from her when he briefly parked his car in a resident-designated space while picking up his two sons from his aunt's home.</p><p>"You're still stealing from me," the woman said after accusing Carter of entering the apartment complex to "get a piece of ass."</p><p>"And you called me" the N-word, Carter said.</p><p>"So? I've got a constitutional right to free speech," she responded. "I'm an American and proud of it. I don't have to leave America to go to Africa — like you guys have to leave Africa to come to America."</p><p>Carter went on to point out the historical inaccuracy in her comment and asked the woman to move her vehicle, which she used to block him in as he arranged car seats for his children.</p><p>Ultimately, she refused to move her vehicle and continued to chastise Carter, eventually involving another woman in the apartment complex who observed the altercation from her balcony.</p><p>"Is this your people again, illegally parking?" she asked her fellow resident.</p><p>"Are you fighting with me? No, don't fight with me," the resident could be heard responding from a distance. "They didn't take your space."</p><p>Eventually, a police officer approached the scene, expressing disbelief when Carter relayed the situation.</p><p>"No--" the officer responded when Carter mentioned that the woman repeated her racial slurs once he began filming. "You're in her parking spot, you're just trying to get your kids."</p><p>Carter continued filming his interaction with the woman, explaining that he "accepts" her frustration over his choice of parking space.</p><p>"What I don't want to accept is all this animosity and hate that you have in your heart," he said, adding that he hoped she had a "blessed day" and handled situations "differently" in the future.</p><p>"It's crazy how this lady just really went off on me and my boys, though," Carter concluded in the final moments of the video, panning to show his young sons in the backseat of his car. She would even play with the book on her own and it was one of the first books she "read" to herself. The book includes realistic sounds, finger trails, and cut outs. I didn't know about Usborne when Ellie was still doing tummy time, but I wish I did because I would've definitely gotten these books to keep her entertained and happy. Older babies would love what the brand calls "Touchy-Feely" and "Slide and See" books that don't have much text, but have textures and peek-a-boo slides instead to explore and play. Ellie's favorite slide and see book is <a href="https://amzn.to/2KOxn82" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Baby's Very First Slide and See Farm."</a></p><p>There are a lot of interactive books for toddlers too, like "All Better," which has reusable bandages for kids to put on animals' boo-boos throughout the book, and <a href="https://amzn.to/2XSnhGI" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Busy Car Book"</a> which has a small car that can be moved around the pages as you read to keep kids entertained. This is part of what the "busy books" series. Even though she's only a year old, Ellie already loves to play with the bandages and grabs the toy off the track as I read to her.</p><p>As kids get older, <a href="https://amzn.to/2KVJLmX" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Usborne</a> also offers fiction and nonfiction books with beautiful illustrations and cut-outs with longer text to help readers as they start the transition into chapter books. It also has a series of nonfiction books called "Shine A Light," in which readers use a flashlight to reveal hidden pictures. Reading in the dark with a flashlight is such a novelty for kids, which might encourage them to read.</p><p>In addition to the wide variety of types of books, Usborne also has books in a wide variety of physical sizes too. Ellie's <a href="https://amzn.to/31sy64B" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Baby's Very First Stroller Book Jungle"</a> is only a few square inches and clips to her stroller or car seat. On the other end of the spectrum, she also has <a href="https://amzn.to/2WIDqNW">"Life Size,"</a> which has pictures of animals that are illustrated to scale so she can compare the size of her mouth to a lion's mouth, for example.</p><p>As a teacher, it's so sad to me when I see that the majority of high school students don't like to read. Buying from an independent consultant can be a really great experience because they can recommend books based on your child's age and interests, and they'll help you through the buying process.</p><p>One con to consider with this way though is that shipping can be slow, and at a flat rate of $6, it's a little steep if you're only buying one book.  </p><h3>The bottom line</h3><p>Whether your child already loves to read or you're fighting an uphill battle, you can't lose when trying out <a href="https://amzn.to/2KVJLmX" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Usborne books</a>. Independent consultants can help you choose the perfect book if you're stuck figuring out where to start, or you can take your pick from the wide variety and feel confident that the books you choose will come in handy <em>sometime</em> in your child's life.</p><p>Thankfully, we live in a world where there are thousands of books to choose from, and as J.K. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Four months after having my first child, I challenged myself to run every day for a month to start exercising again.</li><li>Throughout the challenge, physical pain and parental obligations kept me from actually being able to run every day.</li><li><keyword id="32311" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="running">Running</keyword> made me feel stronger, more confident, and more at peace with myself postpartum. </li><li>I can't keep up with this routine, but the challenge inspired me to keep running a few days a week.</li></ul><p>Although I would never call myself a runner, I've always enjoyed it.</p><p>In the years before getting pregnant, I had gone for a run outside whenever the weather was nice or I couldn't make it to the gym. </p><p>But at the time of writing this, four months postpartum, I was feeling things many new <keyword id="6359162" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="parents">parents</keyword> feel: exhausted, overwhelmed, stressed, isolated, and enthralled with my new baby. <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrities-who-had-postpartum-depression-ppd-2017-12">But I also felt physically weak, anxious, a little sad, and severely lacking any sort of self-esteem.</a></p><p>My body had changed so much, <a href="https://www.insider.com/working-out-while-pregnant-2019-2">I hadn't worked out in quite some time</a>, and I was desperate to get back into it. </p><p>So I decided to challenge myself to try running for 30 minutes each day for a month. </p><p>It's worth pointing out that running every day can <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/fitness-exercise/running-everyday">increase one's risk for "overuse injury,"</a> which results from doing too much physical activity too fast, according to Healthline. Still, I decided to go ahead with my challenge with the thought that if I felt too exhausted or in pain, I would rest.</p><h2>The first week was just as hard as I thought it would be</h2><div type="image" title="Screen Shot 2020 01 24 at 3.12.52 PM" height="624" width="467" msid="77875095" hostid="261"></div><p>My first run couldn't have happened on a better day. It was a crisp, sunny Monday morning, and it was warm enough that I could get away with short sleeves.</p><p>Still, I won't lie, that first run was brutal. I had to really push myself to get through the full 30 minutes. </p><p>I started by doing <a href="https://www.insider.com/learn-to-love-running-after-hating-it-2018-12">intervals of walking and running</a> because that's what I knew my body could handle. I did three minutes of brisk walking followed by six minutes of running, and then I repeated that until the 30 minutes was up.</p><p>As hard as that first run was, it also felt amazing. I hadn't pushed my body in that way in such a long time, and I had forgotten how great it felt to do so. </p><p>The next few runs were considerably tougher, and the weather wasn't helping. It was cold and rainy during most of my runs that week, and the perpetual mist left me with chills.</p><p>The other issue was that my legs were incredibly sore, and although the pain lessened the more I moved, it was hard to push myself to get out there for the first few strides.</p><p>My fourth run landed on my birthday and it was very rainy and windy. In the past, I would have used my birthday as an excuse to skip out on my run, but this time, I forced myself to lace up my sneakers.</p><p>It wasn't my best run of the week, but I did the full 30 minutes, and it felt great.</p><p>To be completely honest, I did miss two days the first week. One day I planned to run, then my babysitter canceled. The second day, errands and obligations got in the way — although <keyword id="2276734" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="I-tried">I tried</keyword> to make up for it by taking my daughter for a long walk.</p><p>By the end of the week, I had started looking forward to my runs despite my sore legs and the considerably colder air. It wasn't just a chance to get back into <keyword id="6358589" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="exercise">exercise</keyword>, it was also a full 30 minutes to focus on myself.</p><h2><strong>I felt a little more motivated during the second week</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Screen Shot 2020 01 24 at 3.16.04 PM" height="864" width="1152" msid="77875098" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Despite missing two days of the previous week, I felt motivated to get back into my new routine. </p><p>For me, one of the best things about my runs was that it was time for myself. When I was running, no one needed me to feed them, or clean up spit up, or hold them until they stopped crying. No one was asking me questions about the baby, no one was reminding me about writing deadlines, no one was interrupting me.</p><p>It was just me, my music, and the fresh air.</p><p>Still, halfway through the week, I noticed that I was feeling some physical pain.</p><p>My upper back was hurting by the end of the day whenever I ran, and it was starting to really bother me. I know <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-making-lower-back-pain-worse-2018-10">lower back pain is common with running</a> — especially on hard pavement — but I hadn't heard much about upper back pain.</p><p>To make sure everything was OK, I spoke with Hope Gaston, a biomechanics and muscle-health specialist with <a href="https://activbody.com/fitness-activ5/">Activbody/Activ5</a>. She told me that upper back pain usually comes from spinal-extension problems.</p><p>"If there is weakness in spinal extension, gravity starts to win and we begin to round forward. This shifts our shoulder blades forward, which may irritate the muscles around them, leading to pain," she said.</p><p>In other words, I was subconsciously leaning forward while I was running, which was hurting my upper back and shoulder blades. </p><p>For my next run, I paid attention to the way my body was moving and noticed several minutes in that I was indeed leaning forward. By the end of the week, the pain lessened just from me being cognizant of my running posture. </p><h2><strong>During the third week, I started feeling really great about myself mentally — but physically, I was hurting</strong></h2><p>By the beginning of the third week, I found an excellent source of motivation: listening to some of my favorite, angry pop-punk songs <a href="https://www.insider.com/list-of-2000s-teen-movies-to-watch-2019-3">from the early 2000s</a>. It was fun, brought back high-school memories, and really got me moving. </p><p>One run of the third week stands out: it was very cold and windy, and I pushed myself to go for a run before the forecasted snow began. Halfway through, however, an icy rain began to fall leaving me drenched. By the time I was nearly done, it was snowing.</p><p>But I wasn't deterred. Wiping water off my face with my sleeve, I kept moving and I felt so proud of myself.</p><p>It was the strongest I had felt since the day I gave birth. I had been dealing with some very intense self-esteem issues since <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-pregnancy-symptoms-2018-9">handling the body changes that come with getting pregnant,</a> and I realized that running was slowly making me feel a little bit better about myself. </p><p>The week wasn't all good, though.</p><p>Toward the end, my upper back pain had subsided, but my knees hurt and my legs were super sore. The pain in my knees was so bad that I actually had to take two days off.</p><p>I spoke to Gaston about avoiding injury while running, and she said it's important to space out workouts in order to let my body rest.</p><p>My body needed a break, and as much as I wanted to run every day for my challenge, I knew I had to listen to it. </p><h2><strong>By the fourth week, I had improved a little bit, but I was still hurting</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Screen Shot 2020 01 24 at 3.18.53 PM" height="1356" width="1146" msid="77875102" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Going into my last week of the challenge, I noticed that my pace had improved a little bit. I had also adjusted my intervals: instead of only running for six minutes, I was able to run for seven minutes, sometimes eight.</p><p>Small improvements, sure, but for me, they felt awesome. </p><p>Still, I had other challenges that week. Some days, it was hard to find a babysitter and it was starting to get dark earlier.</p><p>I was also still in pain. My knees were hurting a lot and one day my back hurt so much that I couldn't do much at all. </p><p>Again, I didn't get to run every single day, but I did learn a lesson: You have to listen to what your body is telling you, regardless of how often you want to work out.</p><p>Even though I didn't technically complete the challenge I had set out to do, I was doing what I could — even on the days I didn't want to.</p><h2><strong>Overall, the challenge was beneficial for me physically and mentally</strong></h2><div type="image" title="picture7" height="3088" width="2320" msid="77875106" hostid="261"></div><p>At the end of the 30 days, I was really proud of myself. My pace was slowly-but-steadily improving, and I was getting better at stretching, cooling down, and keeping an upright posture through my runs.</p><p>Mentally, I felt stronger — <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-to-expect-after-giving-birth-2018-9">like I had more control over my body than I had for months</a> — and confidence was slowly coming back to me. Plus, the extra "me time" was helping me feel more like myself again. </p><p>Will I keep running every day? Honestly, no. It's an unrealistic schedule for a working, new mom to keep up with.</p><p>Even though I work from home, I can't always find a sitter, and my daughter can't safely ride in a jogging stroller for a few more months. I tried running 30 minutes each day for a month, and it was painful but I saw major improvements

But we still thought we had some idea of what to expect. Turns out we were wrong about a lot of things.</p><p>Here are nine things that surprised me about being a new parent.</p><p><strong>1. Nothing will really prepare you for being a parent.</strong></p><p>Before I gave birth, I took parenting classes and read parenting books. But the truth is that nothing can really prepare you for your baby. Each baby is different, and you'll get to know your baby and cater to his or her needs.</p><p>I still panic sometimes when my daughter cries, but at least by now I recognize what the different cries mean. Also, babies reach the big milestones in their own time, so don't panic if your baby isn't rolling over or crawling when the baby books say they should. </p><p><strong>2. Newborns sleep constantly.</strong></p><p>Newborns can sleep up to 18 hours a day. When I brought my baby home from the hospital, I kept waiting for her to wake up and play. Turns out that she mostly just slept (and ate and cried and pooped). Feeding her was a challenge because she would constantly fall asleep, and we would spend hours on end tickling her feet, calling her name, and even rubbing water on her to try to get her to wake up and eat. </p><p><strong>3. Sleep deprivation is utterly debilitating.</strong></p><p>Just because a newborn is sleeping doesn't mean parents will get any rest. <span>The single hardest thing about being a new parent is the sleep deprivation. When you bring home a newborn, there's a good chance you'll never sleep for more than two or three hours at a time - at least in the very beginning. Even though newborns sleep for almost 18 hours a day, they're up every two to three hours to eat - and eating can easily take an hour, meaning that sometimes you'll only be able to sleep for one hour at a time before it's time to start the next feeding. Try to sleep when the baby sleeps.</span></p><p> <strong>4. Babies are extremely expensive.</strong></p><p><span>I knew that a baby would be expensive, but I didn't factor in how much the basics really rack up. </span><a href="http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/diapers/buying-guide.htm">Consumer Reports estimates</a><span> that parents will spend at least $2,500 on diapers by the time their child is potty-trained. I signed up for </span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Family">Amazon Family ($99/year),</a><span> which offers discounts on diapers and baby essentials as well as free shipping, and it's already paid for itself. </span><a href="http://www.diapers.com/">Diapers.com</a><span> also had great deals. Formula can also be really pricey, but it's a necessity if you're planning to formula feed your baby. And then there are the essentials, like cribs and strollers, that can add up to thousands of dollars.If you choose to buy them used<span>, make sure they are up to current safety standards. </span>There are also<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/unexpected-costs-of-having-a-baby-2014-4"> unexpected costs,</a> like takeout meals (since you won't have time to cook) and doctor's visits. </span></p><p><span>But those costs are minor compared to the big picture: It costs an estimated $<span>$245,340</span> for a middle-income couple to raise a child to 18 years of age, </span><a href="http://www.cnpp.usda.gov/ExpendituresonChildrenbyFamilies">according to a 2014 report</a><span> from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.</span></p><p><strong>5. Breastfeeding can be incredibly difficult.</strong></p><p>Before I had a baby, I thought they just grabbed on and started sucking. Turns out it's a lot more complicated than that. There can be difficulty with latching, swallowing, milk supply, clogged milk ducts, and more. And when a baby can't eat, it's terrifying because it can mean a life or death issue. I learned that there's a whole industry devoted to breastfeeding: There are lactation consultants, all sorts of products, and even whole stores devoted entirely to breastfeeding. </p><p><strong>6. Babies make a ton of laundry.</strong></p><p><span>It's amazing how such tiny beings can make such an insane mess. Between explosive poops, spraying pee, and spit-up and throw up, be prepared to go through tons of diapers, clothes, burp cloths, bibs, and blankets. And I mean TONS. If you can afford it, hire someone to do the laundry for you - you'll be happy you did.</span></p><p> <strong>7. New parents are late for everything.</strong></p><p><span>Don't even bother scheduling appointments when you're caring for a newborn. Your baby has other plans for you. It's hard enough to get yourself and the baby dressed, but there's always an element of the unknown. Just as you're walking out the door, your baby may start wailing inconsolably or take such a big poop that the clean-up will require a full bath. </span></p><p><strong>8. Everything can be forgiven when your baby smiles.</strong></p><p><span>Don't underestimate the power of cute. You can forgive the messy diapers, the lack of sleep, and everything else when your baby smiles at you. And the first time my baby laughed? That was one of the best moments of my life.</span></p><p><strong>9. It changes your life in every way possible.</strong></p><p><span><span>After you become a parent, there's no going back. It was less aspiration than a desperate move away from offices, which just two years out of college I had already realized I could not stomach. The small talk, the insipid jokes, the banal daily existence in the same cubicle one day after the next - this seemed so far removed from the professional life I'd imagined. It felt like a game I couldn't win, an equation I continually failed to square. I broke free and went out on my own.</p><p>Running my own business didn't come naturally. I seemed to specialize in mistakes, miscalculations, and missed deadlines. Then I grew more accustomed to the rigors of satisfying client demand, more fulfilled by my successes, even challenged by the difficulties. Work was good. I was happy. </p><p>Fast forward a decade and a half. I was working from my preferred venue - the late, lamented Café Yesterday in Berkeley, California - sitting on a couch, writing about the mechanics of taking out a home loan, watching a wrecking ball destroy the city library across University Avenue. It was 10 o'clock in the morning and life was exactly as I'd hoped it would be during the more turbulent times. </p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e5840adfee23d4b7e6164b8-960/allison landa headshot.jpg" alt="Allison Landa" /><p class="source"><span>Courtesy of Allison Landa</span></p><p class="caption">Allison Landa.</p><p><em>Was this it? Would things be any different five years from now?</em></p><p>Not long after that strange spate of momentary doubt, I stood looking at a positive pregnancy test. Seemed <em>that </em>question had been settled. The pregnancy was unanticipated but not unwanted, and as my husband and I struggled to wrap our minds around the idea of parenthood, I found inside myself a singular set of worries.</p><p><em>What would happen to my career? How would things change when I was working not at a leisurely pace in one of Berkeley's many cozy cafes, but rather around the margins as my child slept? Would the tiny nest egg I'd nurtured start to dwindle and eventually die? Would freelancing become nostalgia?</em></p><p>I pictured the swing of the ball, the crumbling of yet another library wall. Destruction bit by bit, total and complete. The teardown of something that must have taken years to conceive, approve, design, and build, simple as that. The symbolism sent me running for the ginger candies I'd found allayed my morning sickness.</p><p>I couldn't lose my career. I <em>couldn't</em>. More than simply a way of earning a living, freelance writing made up the bulk of my identity. It was my personal sensibility, a source of pride. I'd constructed my professional fortress and now my fetus was coming to get me, walls be damned. I stood looking at the Amazon boxes piled haphazardly in the corner of our living room - stroller, car seat, something called a Bumper Jumper - and felt my throat catch with panic.</p><h2>I decided to take action.</h2><p>Action, my mother once counseled, is the key to easing anxiety.</p><p>So I started the swing into motion. I contacted my clients, emailing them with the subject line "Good News!" I spun the pregnancy as an exciting addition to my life and a fruitful challenge to my work. As I typed, I chewed on my lower lip so hard that I could taste the coppery blood. </p><p>The responses flowed in, all with congratulations, some with better news than others. One of my mainstay clients warned that I may not be able to handle my current workload once the Beloved Bundle arrived; another questioned if I wanted to work at all while I was learning how to handle being a parent. Some simply said <em>rock on </em>and handed me another assignment. </p><p><em>Ah</em>, I thought. <em>The filtering process begins. </em>I could feel the nerves ratchet up another notch. Then I made a decision, one that has stayed with me from then on: <em>You're going to have feelings. Acknowledge them. Own them. Then work with them.</em></p><p>Life as I knew it wasn't <em>about </em>to change; it already had. My career was shifting even as my waistline expanded. <em>All right, action. Let's see what you've got for me.</em></p><p>I struck bargains with my clients: In return for working ahead, I would take two months off to bond with my child. To my shock, even the recalcitrant ones agreed. Then the nerves struck again: <em>How was I going to get all this done?</em></p><p>I made content calendars for myself, sorting out what was to be accomplished and when. I set goals. I popped ginger candies like it was going out of style, only occasionally marveling at the fact that it took a hard right hook to spin me around to the type of organization of which I'd only dreamt in the past.</p><h2>How would we afford our new family?</h2><p>Then came the financial aspect, which made planning seem like cake. I've never been good with money. Six months into my freelance career, I broke into my savings and embarked on a month-long trip to Europe. I'd spent years ducking and diving from landlords, decades playing chicken with credit cards. By the time my husband entered my life, my credit was a rotting corpse. He reanimated it like some fiscal Frankenstein, putting me as an authorized user on his plastic, taking over payments on my massive student loans. Now I was responsible for making sure I could pay my part of the bills and still take time away from my work. No amount of ginger could make that fear subside.</p><p><em>Face it. Stare it down and make it happen. </em>I went into accountant mode, calculator in hand, pen tucked behind my right ear. By the time the numbers were sorted and the fractions made whole, I had somehow hashed out a plan to manage my obligations.</p><p>My husband and I sat together on the worn couch in our tatty living room. We lived like college kids. How would we accommodate a child?</p><p>This time, though, I made the fear my friend.</p><p>"Look," I said. "We've come this far."</p><p>When Baz arrived, I relied on the same skills I'd developed pre-planning my career in order to handle having an infant. I got lucky - the kid has always been mellow and easygoing, gentle and cooperative - but still I threw myself into the process of anticipating his needs. It wasn't flawless or foolproof - nothing is - but I grew to understand him as I'd come to know the ebbs and flows of my work. I found myself able to ride through the victories and hang on during the difficult times.</p><p>By the time I returned to full-time work, I grew amazed at how easily things fell into place. Planning and budgeting - dirty words to me in the past - helped me master what could easily have been disastrous. Getting pregnant made me terrified I'd lose my freelance business. Here's how I persevered and became even more successful with less time in my day.

<p><img class="float_right" src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/53503723eab8eaf813f1c954-912-684/crying-scared-baby-7.jpg" border="0" alt="Crying-Scared-Baby " />When my husband and I decided to have a baby, we knew that we were entering into the unknown. But we still thought we had some idea of what to expect. Turns out we were wrong about a lot of things.</p>
<p>Here are nine things that surprised me about being a new parent.</p>
<p><strong>1. That nothing will really prepare you for being a parent.</strong></p>
<p>Before I gave birth, I took parenting classes and read parenting books. But the truth is that nothing can really prepare you for your baby. Each baby is different, and you'll get to know your baby and cater to his or her needs.</p>
<p>I still panic sometimes when my daughter cries, but at least by now I recognize what the different cries mean. Also, babies reach the big milestones in their own time, so don't panic if your baby isn't rolling over or crawling when the baby books say they should. </p>
<p><strong>2. That newborns sleep constantly.</strong></p>
<p>Newborns can sleep up to 18 hours a day. When I brought my baby home from the hospital, I kept waiting for her to wake up and play. Turns out that she mostly just slept (and ate and cried and pooped). Feeding her was a challenge because she would constantly fall asleep, and we would spend hours on end tickling her feet, calling her name, and even rubbing water on her to try to get her to wake up and eat. </p>
<p><strong>3. That sleep deprivation is utterly debilitating.</strong></p>
<p>Just because a newborn is sleeping doesn't mean parents will get any rest. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The single hardest thing about being a new parent is the sleep deprivation. When you bring home a newborn, there's a good chance you'll never sleep for more than two or three hours at a time - at least in the very beginning. Even though newborns sleep for almost 18 hours a day, they're up every two to three hours to eat - and eating can easily take an hour, meaning that sometimes you'll only be able to sleep for one hour at a time before it's time to start the next feeding. Try to sleep when the baby sleeps.</span></p>
<p><strong>4. That breastfeeding can be incredibly difficult.</strong></p>
<p>Before I had a baby, I thought they just grabbed on and started sucking. Turns out it's a lot more complicated than that. There can be difficulty with latching, swallowing, milk supply, clogged milk ducts, and more. And when a baby can't eat, it's terrifying because it can mean a life or death issue. I learned that there's a whole industry devoted to breastfeeding: There are lactation consultants, all sorts of products, and even whole stores devoted entirely to breastfeeding. </p>
<p><strong>5. That babies make a ton of laundry.</strong></p>
<p><span>It's amazing how such tiny beings can make such an insane mess. Between explosive poops, spraying pee, and spit-up and throw up, be prepared to go through tons of diapers, clothes, burp cloths, bibs, and blankets. And I mean TONS. If you can afford it, hire someone to do the laundry for you - you'll be happy you did.</span></p>
<p><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">6. That babies are extremely expensive.</strong></p>
<p>I knew that a baby would be expensive, but I didn't factor in how much the basics really rack up. <a href="http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/diapers/buying-guide.htm">Consumer Reports estimates</a> that parents will spend at least $2,500 on diapers by the time their child is potty-trained. I signed up for <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Mom">Amazon Mom ($79/year),</a> which offers discounts on diapers and baby essentials as well as free shipping, and it's already paid for itself. <a href="http://www.diapers.com/">Diapers.com</a> also had great deals. Formula can also be really pricey, but it's a necessity if you're planning to formula feed your baby. And then there are the essentials, like cribs and strollers, that can add up to thousands of dollars. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/expensive-items-on-newborns-checklist-2013-5">If you choose to buy them used</a>, make sure they are up to current safety standards.</p>
<p>But those costs are minor compared to the big picture: It costs an estimated $241,080 for a middle-income couple to raise a child to 18 years of age, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/this-is-the-insane-cost-of-raising-a-kid-2013-8">according to a 2013 report</a> from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.</p>
<p><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">7. That new parents are late for everything.</strong></p>
<p><span>Don't even bother scheduling appointments when you're caring for a newborn. Your baby has other plans for you. It's hard enough to get yourself and the baby dressed, but there's always an element of the unknown. Just as you're walking out the door, your baby may start wailing inconsolably or take such a big poop that the clean-up will require a full bath. </span></p>
<p><strong>8. That everything can be forgiven when your baby smiles.</strong></p>
<p><span>Don't underestimate the power of cute. You can forgive the messy diapers, the lack of sleep, and everything else when your baby smiles at you. And the first time my baby laughed? That was one of the best moments of my life.</span></p>
<p><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">9. That it changes your life in every way possible.</strong></p>
<p><span><span>After you become a parent, there's no going back. There's no more late night bar-hopping, no more spontaneous travel, and no more last-minute plans - at least at the beginning. </span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">You'll always be responsible for this tiny, helpless being, and that's a terrifying but amazing feeling. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>

9 Things That Surprised Me About Being A New Parent

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5768289552bcd01d7b8ca13c-1067/mike_mccue_flipbard_ceo_2.jpg" alt="mike mccue" data-mce-source="Flipboard" data-mce-caption="Flipboard CEO Mike McCue." /><p class="source"><span>Flipboard</span></p><p class="caption">Flipboard CEO Mike McCue.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Flipboard, the magazine-style curation app, is about to turn profitable "reasonably soon," the company's CEO Mike McCue revealed to Business Insider on Monday.</p><p>Speaking to Business Insider at the Cannes Lions <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> festival, McCue said it's all down to "class over mass" when it comes to its advertising model.</p><p>Like many other web companies, Flipboard makes its money by selling ads. But unlike other platforms, which allow marketers to buy ads using automated tools - known as "programmatic" advertising - the curation app is also careful to also curate its advertisers. </p><p>You won't see ads on how to trim your belly fat on Flipboard, but you will see promoted stories, videos, and magazine-style full-page ads from brands like Rolex, Starbucks, Apple, Porsche, and Merrill Lynch.</p><p>"Rolex does not want to be adjacent to a belly fat ad and that is crucial: Who are your fellow advertisers? It actually matters. Advertisers want to be adjacent to high-quality content and high-quality brands," McCue said.</p><h2>Why Instagram has gotten 'less cool'</h2><p>Last year, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/instagram-switches-on-ads-api-2015-8">Instagram opened up its advertising API</a>, opening up the floodgates for all types of brands - big and small - to be able to place ads within the app. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/instagram-ad-spending-up-11000-2015-12">Media buyers reported spending on Instagram immediately rocketed as a result</a>, however some in the industry <a href="http://www.adweek.com/news/technology/will-instagram-s-advertising-gold-rush-send-users-running-167873">have questioned whether Instagram has been able to maintain the magazine-like quality</a> of its advertising offering now everyone can advertise there.</p><p>"Instagram users really don't like [the influx of new advertisers] and it's not going to hurt them overnight, but it does make the brand less cool in the eyes of people and that means what will happen there is that ultimately someone else is going to come out with a product that's going to start to rival Instagram," McCue said. "If you go for scale and mass, versus what we focus on - class over mass - you get two different types of experience."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/576829bc52bcd020008ca49a-1340/rolexdaydatelandscape.jpeg" alt="RolexDayDateLandscape" data-mce-source="Flipboard" data-mce-caption="A full-screen Rolex ad, as it appears on Flipboard." /><p class="source"><span>Flipboard</span></p><p class="caption">A full-screen Rolex ad, as it appears on Flipboard.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Equally, Flipboard wants to make sure its ads look luxury to suit its roster of high-end advertising. Flipboard took its design cues from print - including full-page ads and the idea of pagination. </p><p>McCue thinks the rise of ad blocker usage has come from "a lack of respect for people" when it comes to monetizing content online.</p><p>"A lot of this is to do with the way ad products work; they were created by geeks in Silicon Valley, not by thoughtful designers and people who understand how you do creative. I think now the industry is starting to realize what's important and become more respectful of people and creative," McCue said.</p><h2>Not worried about Nuzzel or Apple News</h2><p>Flipboard isn't alone in offering a mobile curation tool that allows people to pull in the latest news from their favorite publishers and social feeds.</p><p><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/nuzzel-how-it-works-and-why-it-is-cool-2015-6">Nuzzel is one example</a>. It creates a feed based on what the people you follow are sharing on social media and what their friends are sharing.</p><p>McCue thinks there's a space for Nuzzel and Flipboard - with Nuzzel you're following people and with Flipboard you're following topics. (Incidentally, McCue and Nuzzel cofounder Jonathan Abram are friends and used to work with each other at Netscape in the 1990s.)</p><p>McCue said: "Nuzzel is doing a lot of what we did with Twitter integration very early on. Flipboard, interestingly, was powered 100% by Twitter, but we started to grow concerned that Twitter's API may not be enduring for us. We had to build our own social creation layer, which is what we did for magazines."</p><p>Lots of people also get their daily dose of what's going on in the world from Apple News - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-apple-ios-9-features-for-iphone-2015-9">a news curation service that came pre-baked into iPhones with its iOS9 update last summer.</a></p><p>McCue said Flipboard got plenty of warning Apple News was coming and it hasn't been detrimental to his business. Flipboard also comes pre-installed into Microsoft, Huawei, and Samsung devices (outside Europe). Apple also isn't focused on driving the advertising ecosystem - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-apple-is-pulling-direct-sales-support-for-iad-2016-1">as demonstrated by the shutdown of its iAd division</a> - McCue said.</p><p>"[The launch of Apple News] has had no impact in terms of engaged users and we have been big partners - they usually feature us when there's a big release, still," McCue added.</p><h2>85 to 90 million users and updates coming this fall</h2><p>Six years after launch, Flipboard has between "85 to 90 million" users. McCue won't reveal revenue numbers but he says the company will become "cash flow positive pretty soon."</p><p>McCue is enthused by the fact that JPMorgan led a $50 million funding round in Flipboard last year. It brought Flipboard's total funding to $210.5 million and valued the company between $800 million to $1.32 billion, <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2015/07/23/flipboard-confirms-its-50m-funding-round/">TechCrunch reported.</a></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/557b20b7ecad045c4e8b4567-2400/gettyimages-167755184.jpg" alt="Flipboard CEO Mike McCue" data-mce-source="Brian Ach/Getty" /><p class="source"><span>Brian Ach/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Flipboard CEO Mike McCue.</p></div><p></p></div></div>McCue said he tried to bring the JPMorgan in during Flipboard's earlier financing because the "those guys are phenomenal." So when they signaled an interest, even though Flipboard had "a lot of cash in the bank," McCue jumped at the opportunity to get JPMorgan on board.</p><p>"JPMorgan invested originally in Thomas Edison when he was building out the electric grid in New York City," McCue said. "They are long-term oriented, they are very entrepreneur-friendly, they are very big thinkers. Pretty much anything I want to do that's huge, I'm sure JPMorgan will play a role in that.
