At the same time, he said the "future politics option is always there and I will use that option". "I have given my resignation. The future politics option is always there and I will use that option," the Chief Minister, who was active in the politics for 52 years, told the media after resigning from the post. Without mincing words, he clarified that, "I have not resigned from myself". "I am in Congress, will discuss with my colleagues and then decide the future course of action," he said. Justifying his decision on his resignation in less than six months of the state going to polls, Amarinder Singh said, in the past two months the high command summoned the legislators thrice. "I had decided in the morning. I had spoken to the Congress President in the morning. I had told her I am resigning," Amarinder Singh said. The resignation of the Chief Minister and his council of minister came just minutes ahead of a crucial meeting of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP). The party's high command is learnt to have conveyed to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to resign to enable the election of a new incumbent. According to some senior party leaders, the high command had categorically asked Amarinder Singh to step down. The minute-by-minute changing political tussle began at about 11.42 p.m. on Friday when Punjab Congress in-charge Harish Rawat tweeted about the decision to hold an urgent CLP meeting on Saturday. Almost 10 minutes later state party chief Navjot Sidhu directed all the MLAs to be present at the CLP meeting. The announcement by Rawat was seen as an indication from the high command to appoint the new incumbent under whose helm the party will go to Assembly polls, slated in March 2022. Responding to the political developments, former state President Sunil Jakhar tweeted: "Kudos to Sh Rahul Gandhi for adopting Alexandrian solution to this Punjabi version of Gordian knot. "Surprisingly, this bold leadership decision to resolve Punjab Congress imbroglio has not only enthralled Congress workers but has sent shudders down the spines of Akalis." The decision to call the CLP comes in the wake of the fresh letter signed by a majority of legislators who expressed dissatisfaction with Amarinder Singh and demanding his removal from the Chief Minister's post. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh resigns amid ongoing turmoil in Congress

Former <keyword id="6354953" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="punjab" source="Orion">Punjab</keyword> Chief Minister <keyword id="6361287" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="amarinder-singh" source="Orion">Amarinder Singh</keyword> on Wednesday announced the launch of his own political party, ahead of the Assembly elections slated for early next year. However, he said the name of the party, which could have an alliance with the BJP, would be announced later after consulting the Election Commission of India. Amarinder Singh told the media here that he would be meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday regarding issues concerning the state. This would be his third meeting with him in recent days. The former two-time Chief Minister favoured the deployment of the BSF up to 50 km of the India-Pakistan border, saying this was required for the security of the state. On his resignation from the Congress, he replied: "I have been in the Congress for the past 52 years. If I can't resign for the next 10 days, what is the harm to it." Earlier, responding to personal attacks by his former Congress colleagues, Amarinder Singh on Tuesday said: "From personal attacks they've now stooped to threats and harassment of my supporters in Patiala and elsewhere. "Let me tell my rivals they can't defeat me with such low-level political games. They will neither win votes nor people's hearts with such tactics." He added: "Those who have stood by me have done so because they believe in and want to continue working for Punjab's peace and development. They will not be scared away by such petty acts of intimidation or persecution. We will continue to fight for Punjab's future." Formally saying goodbye to the Congress which made him the Chief Minister of Punjab twice and the state party President thrice, an "upset" Amarinder Singh last week said that he would soon announce the launch of his own political party to serve the interests of the people, including the farmers who've been fighting for their rights for over a year now. He also said he is hopeful of a seat-sharing arrangement with the BJP for next year's Assembly elections in the state, if the farmers' issues are resolved in their interest. He added that he would not rest until he can secure the future of his people and his state. Former Punjab CM Amarinder Singh announces new political outfit ahead of assembly elections

AICC general secretary <keyword id="180100" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harish-Rawat" source="Orion">Harish Rawat</keyword> said in a tweet, "It gives me immense pleasure to announce that Sh. #CharanjitSinghChanni has been unanimously elected as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab." Channi (58), a minister in the outgoing Amarinder Singh cabinet, comes from the Dalit community. Channi's selection assumes significance as the dissension-riven Congress faces the Assembly polls in less than five months. The BJP had earlier announced that if voted to power in Punjab, it will make a Dalit the chief minister, while the SAD, which is fighting the coming polls in alliance with the BSP, had said that its Deputy Chief Minister would be from the Dalit community. The resolution, while acknowledging the freedom of speech, felt that some senior leaders going public with their statement regarding a change of leadership in the Congress was improper, as it not only gave ammunition to the opponents to criticise the party, but also demoralised the party cadres. The resolution noted that this was an issue that should have been raised in the internal forum of the party, instead of going public by leaking it to the media. Sonia Gandhi was made the party interim President in August last year after Rahul Gandhi stepped down following the debacle in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The CWC meeting on Monday could be a stormy affair after a letter written by scores of party leaders has surfaced, calling for drastic changes and reform in the grand old party. The party sources said that there is no challenge to the leadership of Rahul Gandhi but if the name of another person is pushed forward, there will be protests from others. It's anticipated that Rahul Gandhi may push the name of KC Venugopal, so everybody is gearing up with their strategies. But if the CWC decides for elections, the matter may be laid to rest. In the meantime, top Congress managers are busy reaching out to dissenters in the party. However, after the letter surfaced calling for reform from top to bottom within the Congress, the pro-Gandhi family lobby has come out against the letter and lashed out at those behind it. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh also rejected the letter, as he said in a statement that Sonia Gandhi should continue as party president. "What the Congress needs is a leadership that is acceptable not just to a few but to the entire party, through its rank and file, and the nation at large," he said, adding that the Gandhis were the right fit for this role.
