It's gone viral for how rough it is.</li><li>Alyssa Ramos, a travel influencer, has crossed it three times back and forth — and keeps going back.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Alyssa Ramos, a travel influencer who's sailed the Drake Passage. It has been edited for length and clarity. I've crossed what's widely known as the <a href="https://www.nomadasaurus.com/crossing-the-drake-passage-to-antarctica/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most treacherous ocean passage in the world</a> three times back and forth by boat. This is why I keep going back.<h2>I'm a travel influencer </h2>It's my job. It has been for 10 years, back when it wasn't that common to be a full-time influencer. I make a living off of collaborations and sponsorships. As a travel influencer, I've always had those bucket list destinations that are just dreams to me. One of those is Antarctica.<h2>The most economical and environmentally-friendly way to get to Antarctica is <a href="https://www.antarcticaguide.com/how-to-get-to-antarctica" target="_blank" rel="noopener">by ship</a> </h2>That <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/9-things-everyone-should-know-before-going-to-antarctica-review-2022-12">journey to Antarctica</a> takes you right through the Drake Passage, which has a <a href="https://www.nomadasaurus.com/crossing-the-drake-passage-to-antarctica/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reputation for being one of the roughest seas in the world</a>. The Drake Passage is a body of water between the southern edge of South America and the lonely continent of Antarctica. Within the Drake Passage, three seas converge. The Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Seas all meet there, and without any land to offer resistance for the water, it can get treacherous. I've gone through the Passage six times now on three Antarctic trips, and you never know if you're going to get the Drake Lake (the nickname for when the Passage is calm) or the Drake Shake (the nickname for when the Passage is rough).<h2>As a travel influencer, I share my travels online </h2>A <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@mylifesatravelmovie/video/7173784831828987182?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video I posted of what it's like to cross the Passage has been viewed more than 4 million times</a>. In the video, you can see the reality of the Passage: how it throws you around while you're just trying to walk, how the waves can reach heights of 40 feet, and how the boat literally rocks up and down. My best tip to anyone going on the Drake Passage is to bring Dramamine, which is an anti-nausea medication. It saves my life. I still throw up every time, but with medication, I'm able to keep myself from throwing up for the entire duration of the two days it takes to get through the Passage. <h2>People say they could never go because they get so motion-sick</h2>But honestly, I get motion-sick just sitting in the backseat of a car and I'm able to do it. You just have to accept that you're going to throw up and be prepared with anti-nausea medications. There's also been a doctor on board each ship I've been on in case someone can't stop vomiting.<h2>It's wild to go through the Drake Passage</h2>It's like being in an elevator that drops. Your stomach falls into your feet, and it feels like gravity is just slamming you around. You're rocking side to side with no control over what's happening. I've had a chair slide across the room from the motion and hit my leg while I was sleeping. Every time I go through the Passage, there's a moment where I'm cleaning up after throwing up and looking at myself in the mirror like: Why did I do this to myself?<h2>But then you get to Antarctica and you remember why the journey was worth it</h2>You get to step foot on the seventh continent. You get to see penguins and whales. You see wildlife you can't see anywhere else in the world. Not only is it a crazy journey, but it leads you to the most incredible destination.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A 17-year-old boy is on life support after being shot by a police officer in San Antonio, Texas.</li><li>The officer, who's been fired, shot at Erik Cantu while he ate a burger in a McDonald's parking lot.</li></ul>The 17-year-old boy who was shot by a Texas police officer <a href="https://www.insider.com/teen-shot-by-police-mcdonalds-parking-lot-life-support-lawyer-2022-10">multiple times in a McDonald's parking lot</a> is undergoing surgery to patch up holes in his organs, according to the family lawyer. The lawyer, Brian Powers, told Insider that Erik Cantu, who appeared to be eating a burger in his car before he was shot on October 2, remains on life support. "It's been two weeks of pure misery since the day Erik was shot multiple times at close range with a .40 caliber," said Powers in a text message on behalf of the family."The bullets brutally tore through his stomach, liver, diaphragm, lungs and arms," Powers continued. "Bullets from the two rounds grazed him deeply on other places of his body. His body has suffered so much from the damage and invasive surgeries to keep him alive."A friend of Cantu's, George Ramos, said Cantu was active and athletic. Ramos recalled days spent playing sports, roller skating, and hanging out with Cantu and other friends outside school."He was probably the fastest out of all of us," Ramos said. "He's quick on those skates."Ramos added: "He's a very ambitious kid. He always had big goals, and he still has big goals." The officer, James Brennand, was fired two days after the shooting. Brennand, 25, was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault by a public servant, according to the San Antonio Homicide Unit. He posted a $200,000 bond and has been released, said the Bexar County district attorney's office, which is investigating the incident.<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUr0vhSpj-0&amp;t=1s">Body-camera footage released by the San Antonio Police Department</a> shows Brennand, a probationary officer with seven months on the job, approaching a black car on foot.The officer abruptly opens the driver-side door, revealing Cantu, who appears to have just taken a bite of the burger in his hand. "Get out of the car," Brennand can be heard saying. "Why?" Cantu asks and then puts the car in reverse. Brennand appears to struggle with Cantu as he reverses the car with the driver's-side door still open. Cantu then attempts to drive away, and Brennand begins firing at the car, shooting at least 10 rounds, the footage shows. Brennand had been at the McDonald's responding to an unrelated incident, Captain Alyssa Campos, the SAPD training commander, said in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaEf668S5WQ">video statement</a>. Brennand thought that Cantu's car had evaded him earlier in the day at a traffic stop, and he suspected it might be stolen, Campos said. Travel influencers and bloggers have already seen their upcoming plans put in flux as fears over COVID-19, the coronavirus disease, continue to spread internationally. In Facebook groups and group texts, influencers are hungry for answers on whether they should cancel their trips, what they should relay to panicked fans, and if they've also experienced brands pulling out of planned campaigns at the last minute.Cases of the coronavirus <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-virus-everything-we-know-deadly-2019-ncov-wuhan-spread-2020-1">have now been reported</a> in nearly 50 countries affecting more than 82,000 people. Many have used their blogs and Instagram presences to assuage fans' fears and relay tips for safe traveling, as well as dispel extraneous rumors about the disease. "If you keep listening to the news that's trying to scare you, you're not going to go anywhere," <a href="https://www.instagram.com/mylifesatravelmovie/">Alyssa Ramos</a>, who runs the blog <a href="https://mylifesamovie.com/">My Life's a Travel Movie</a>, told Business Insider. "Followers ask me questions about if they should cancel their plans. I get very angry about it because I want people to travel."Some creators are instead choosing not to travel over concerns about being able to return to their home countries without being delayed or stopped because of coronavirus screenings and quarantines.Stories of <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2020/02/25/world/middleeast/25reuters-china-health-iran-turkey-airplane.html">weeks-long quarantines</a> for citizens traveling home have already made headlines. Many of them were passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, where <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-diamond-princess-cruise-ship-coronavirus-quarantine-went-wrong-2020-2">more than 700 people</a> had contracted coronavirus by the end of a two-week quarantine on board.At least five influencers told Business Insider that the fear of a potential quarantine was enough to keep them from leaving home. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/beckyvandijk/">Becky van Dijk</a>, a United Kingdom resident moving to the U.S. in a few months, has halted all traveling plans for fear the country will soon "close its borders" to certain travelers. Travel influencer <a href="https://www.instagram.com/johnnyjet/">Johnny Jet</a> said leaving the U.S. was "just too risky," in the case he were to be quarantined and kept apart from his two young children at home for weeks on end. "You tell someone you just came back from Asia, they take a step back. They're nervous. It's scary because it's unknown," Jet told Business Insider. "I dont want to risk being quarantined.
