<ul><li><keyword id="19895203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="keywords">Electric vehicles</keyword> (EVs) are gaining popularity worldwide</li><li>However, concerns remain about their environmental impact</li><li> <keyword id="21881868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="alternative-fuel" source="keywords">Alternative fuel</keyword> vehicles like hydrogen fuel cells and biofuels are some more alternatives we can tap into</li></ul> Electric vehicles or EVs are in their prime right now, with the demand crossing an all-time high. A trend noticeable around the world, EVs are not only becoming increasingly popular but also fairly affordable. Slowly but surely EVs are overcoming the challenges that crossed them — design, features, safety, and most importantly range. A major credit to this trend can be given to consumer acceptance, policy backing, and improving infrastructure. However, there is a downside to EVs as well. Having featured multiple EVs with our series<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCR3PaYxcmk&amp;t=1s" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank"> Short Spin, </a>I developed a strong reference point. This made me wonder why are we so heavily reliant on them. Over its life cycle, EVs cannot be termed as particularly environmentally friendly, which has been their main selling point over the past few decades. <h2>The ‘Red’ side of EVs</h2> There is a bit of red within the go-green agenda that EV manufacturers push. EVs as a whole do come with benefits like low maintenance, improved efficiency and ultimately lower fuel emissions. However, <keyword id="21357488" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EV-production" source="keywords">EV production</keyword> and disposal can have detrimental effects on the natural environment. Here are some socio-ecological concerns over EVs: 1. High carbon footprint in battery production: EV battery production is energy-intensive and often relies on electricity from fossil fuels, leading to a high initial carbon footprint. This is elaborated in a story recently published by Earth Org. 2. Resource constraints and ethical concerns: Particularly with the extensive mining of cobalt and other minerals for EVs, there has been a global outcry. Limited availability of critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, shady mining practices long work hours, unsafe work environments, and use of child labour in underdeveloped parts of the world have raised several ethical issues around the sustainability of EVs. This issue can be explored further in this essay by Al Jazeera. 3. Recycling and end-of-life challenges: EV battery recycling is currently inefficient, costly, and poses significant environmental risks, with a huge amount of batteries ending up in landfills. 4. Manufacturing costs and economic barriers: High production costs, especially for batteries, make EVs more expensive than conventional vehicles and require significant investments in new manufacturing facilities and supply chains. 5. Supply chain and geopolitical risks: Critical mineral resources necessary for EV production are concentrated in a few countries. This leads to vulnerabilities in the complex supply chain and often risks disruptions due to geopolitical tensions, trade conflicts, or natural disasters. China as of today controls 83% of EV battery production in the world, with a major stronghold on the supply chain. While I am in no way suggesting to drop out of EVs, I believe sticking to just one alternative risks replicating the same mistake we did for ICE vehicles. So, what are the alternatives? <h2>The alternates fuel vehicles (<keyword id="23193800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AFVs" source="keywords">AFVs</keyword>)</h2> AFVs are a growing segment of the automotive industry that utilize fuels other than traditional gasoline or diesel. These vehicles offer similar potential benefits such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. While EVs are also a form of AFVs, here we will list out other major alternatives like hydrogen fuel and biofuel options. Hydrogen fuel cells: Convert hydrogen gas into electricity, emitting only water vapour. Currently, <keyword id="19906788" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Toyota" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Toyota" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Toyota">Toyota</keyword> and Hyundai are the only hydrogen-based cars in the Indian market. Hydrogen internal combustion engines: These vehicles use hydrogen as a fuel in modified combustion engines. While road-legal vehicles for this fuel type aren’t out, BMW with hydrogen 7 is working on a prototype. Ethanol: This is a renewable fuel made from plant materials, commonly mixed with gasoline. In America, Ford F-150 Flex-Fuel and Chevrolet Silverado Flex-Fuel are utilizing this technology. Biodiesel and renewable diesel: Derived from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled grease, these fuel types can be used in diesel engines. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG): Perhaps the most famous alternative for cabbies in Delhi, CNG is in popular demand. Technically it is used in specially modified internal combustion engines, primarily for lower emissions. Propane (Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG): A byproduct of natural gas processing and crude oil refining, used in internal combustion engines. As technology continues to advance, these AFVs are becoming more accessible and affordable, making them a promising option for sustainable transportation. EVs are not the only options for alternative fuel — make way for hydrogen and bio-fuel

<keyword id="19955368" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="budget-2024" source="keywords">Budget 2024</keyword>, which is set to be presented on July 22nd, is set to accelerate the growth of <keyword id="20459350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-stock-markets" source="keywords">Indian stock markets</keyword> by as much as 20%, a recent survey by <keyword id="19897999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bloomberg" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Bloomberg" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Bloomberg">Bloomberg</keyword> noted. While some respondents hope that the <keyword id="20983733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-Nifty50" source="keywords">NSE Nifty50</keyword>, which is currently trading at 24,273.35 points, might reach 26,000 points by the end of this year, others estimate the index to inch up even higher. The budget is likely to boost consumer spending, accelerate consumption, and support infrastructure development, noted half of the 24 experts Bloomberg surveyed. Data by Bloomberg Intelligence predicted that the estimated earnings per share (EPS) of companies on the MSCI India Index is set to rise by 15.6% on year basis, for the calendar year 2024. In contrast, Chinese firms are expected to grow at about 10%. One-fourth of surveyed analysts noted that pushing capital expenditure would be the government's top priority, while the other half thought the focus would be on boosting consumer demand. Naturally, analysts see potential growth in consumer discretionary stocks in the months to come, followed by financial services. <h2>Focus on Women, Capex</h2>Many are expecting the government to raise the standard deduction threshold from the current Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000. The government is also thinking of raising the limits of the <keyword id="19930663" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Public-Provident-Fund" source="keywords">Public Provident Fund</keyword> (PPF) from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000. As per Ashwajit Singh, Founder and Managing Director of IPE Global, "the budget is expected to be tilted towards adopting a strategy for the underprivileged, youth, farmers, and women. The budget is expected to reflect the government’s tried and tested formula of ‘guarantees’ by opting for income transfer policies and spending more on welfare schemes in government campaigns in India. Allocations for existing schemes such as 'Housing for All’, MGNREGA, and health insurance for these sections of society are likely to increase while new schemes may be introduced". According to Badal Yagnik, CEO of Colliers India, the real estate segment is optimistic regarding this budget: "Housing, infrastructure development, sustainability, and digitization will remain at the core of the budget, which will go a long way in supporting real estate growth across segments in the long term. EV infrastructure, renewable energy, and green financing will continue to remain in focus, creating a strong base for a sustainable future. Incentivization of green buildings through minimum alternate tax or tax breaks similar to the infrastructure sector will be particularly beneficial. Meanwhile, retail investors are calling for additional rationalizing of the capital gains tax structure. The Union Budget 2024–25 should explore initiatives to boost greater retail engagement in REITs and InvITs". Anooshka Soham Bathwal, founder of Dhanvesttor, a financial management platform, expects that the government's focus is likely to keep driving the increased participation of women in the workforce in the upcoming full budget, where it can attain the same by incentivising higher education for women. "To promote entrepreneurship, the government can introduce special benefits for the businesses started by women. Further steps towards a stable policy environment and ease of doing business are also desirable. Incentives on tax, funding, and growth for women-centric organizations can help to further attain the inclusive growth objective of government". Bathwal also emphasized that the budget should promote entrepreneurs and the country's startup system. "Entrepreneurs are advocating for additional tax breaks for investors and promoters to attract more domestic capital. As India progresses towards becoming a global hub for entrepreneurship and innovation, fostering both technological and process innovations is crucial. Significant improvements in ongoing training and skill upgrades are vital, particularly given the rapid growth in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. Budget 2024 to fuel stock markets: Bloomberg Survey

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Organizations are shifting to hybrid cloud and on-prem IT infrastructure for more control over data.</li><li>This trend is driven by data privacy, security concerns, and AI's growing influence.</li></ul>There's a change in the winds of IT infrastructure. After a decadeslong rush to the cloud, many organizations are exploring ways to exercise more control over their data and IT infrastructure.Rather than depending solely on third-party cloud services, they're looking to operate their IT data networks on-site. This strategy, often referred to as on-premises or on-prem, is gaining renewed interest thanks to factors such as data privacy and security concerns, regulations designed to hold organizations accountable for the data they collect, and the rise of artificial intelligence.The interest in on-prem doesn't represent a wholesale rejection of the cloud; many organizations are looking for more control from the cloud services they choose and seek to blend them with on-prem hardware."We're seeing more demand for on-prem," Hang Tan, the hybrid cloud chief operating officer of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, told Business Insider. "I don't think customers are thinking about it like it's a zero-sum game where either something goes to the public cloud or entirely on-prem. There's a recognition that customers need to have a more hybrid environment."<div type="image" title="Hang Tan wearing a suit jacket over a dress shirt in a portrait" height="2674" width="2526" msid="112500772" hostid="261" sizebytes="546952"></div><h2 id="729c5a6d-1380-4364-adfa-d63ff00eb555">A push for on-prem</h2>This trend is a response to concerns about the reliability, security, and cost-effectiveness of cloud services. But it's not a binary choice between hosting IT networks on the cloud and hosting them on-prem. Often the most important decision isn't about the physical location of an organization's infrastructure but about the level of security and control the organization is given over it."It's more about the governance of infrastructure, including data, networking, and servers," said Peter Wang, the cofounder and chief innovation officer of the software developer Anaconda. "Who manages it? Who gets to say, 'No, absolutely, you can't do that.'" His company, founded in 2012 to help organizations use <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/snowflake-announces-partnership-with-anaconda-python-data-science-2021-9">Python for business analytics</a>, found itself at the leading edge of this discussion as Python became a popular <a target="_blank" href="https://www.techzine.eu/blogs/devops/117952/popularity-of-python-continues-to-rise-against-backdrop-of-ai-race/">programming language for AI workloads</a>.<div type="image" title="Peter Wang wears a button-up dress shirt and smiles in a portrait shot" height="5111" width="5111" msid="112500766" hostid="261" sizebytes="379940"></div>Anaconda works with organizations that pursue a spectrum of solutions. Those seeking the most extreme security may operate "a box in a building somewhere, oftentimes guarded by people with machine guns, where you go in with a flash drive," Wang said. But that's applicable to only the most security-conscious industries and some public-sector customers.Rather than placing infrastructure under lock and key behind a barbed-wire fence, Wang said, many organizations prefer to see cloud services include more detailed data-governance controls and low-level access to system resources. This can give organizations a level of control over cloud infrastructure that's more like what they'd have if the hardware were on-prem.Dennis Duckworth, the head of product and end-user experience at Kindo, an AI-driven workforce-software developer, offered a similar perspective. Kindo provides a secure management platform for AI systems that lets organizations control which users have access to internal AI resources.Duckworth said that some Kindo customers used an air-gapped on-prem strategy but that most were using, or looking to use, a secure and controllable solution that could be deployed within a cloud service such as Amazon Web Services. "They're not hosting it themselves, but we can deploy within that infrastructure," he said.<div type="image" title="Dennis Duckworth smiles while wearing a dress shirt and jeans" height="1000" width="750" msid="112500768" hostid="261" sizebytes="50674"></div>Perspectives on the trend differ depending on an organization's size and industry. Chris Stegh, the chief technology officer at the IT consulting company eGroup Enabling Technologies, said some sectors, like education and healthcare, pursued on-prem solutions for cost reasons."The commonalities of those organizations are they've got brick and mortar," Stegh said. "They've got sunk costs in their data center because they own some real estate."<h2 id="1e22b520-3eb5-417e-9814-5cca0937b265">AI is igniting changes in IT strategy</h2>Tan said AI was "pouring rocket fuel" into the on-prem trend by driving a desire for greater control and better governance of data and IT infrastructure. While many organizations hope AI will improve efficiency, they've discovered it can require a rethink of how their infrastructure operates.The particulars of IT infrastructure are often guided by the relationship between the applications people want to use and the data those applications require to function, Tan told BI. "With AI, because the data is dominating the equation, you have to move the application to the data, not the other way around," he explained.Tan said that an HPE customer that runs a large retail business originally put infrastructure on-prem to allow operations to continue if internet connectivity was interrupted. Over time, the retailer expanded its capabilities with theft detection and inventory control powered by AI video analytics handled on hardware in stores.These edge servers were "becoming AI-enabled cloudlets," or small-scale data centers that use <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-a-graphics-card">graphics processing units</a> to operate "a whole private cloud stack," Tan added.In other cases, a company may need to take multiple approaches. Tan used self-driving vehicles as an example: Autonomous vehicles make decisions on local hardware, but the data is also sent to a data center, where it may be used to train new AI models. Because of that, many organizations interested in AI need a hybrid cloud infrastructure that includes cloud and on-prem elements — and that can connect them when needed.<h2 id="d0eb7c75-c19f-416a-8f59-5dec5d0980a6">The role of regulation</h2>Regulatory concerns are further strengthening interest in on-prem and hybrid cloud strategies. The landscape of data protection and AI regulation is evolving rapidly as different nations and states or jurisdictions within nations implement varying rules and requirements. Duckworth said this would lead to a complex regulatory future."We're going to see a patchwork of different regulations across the globe," he said. "It might be that in Germany you can't use ChatGPT, but you can use Mistral," he said. He also referenced recent <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tomshardware.com/software/switzerland-mandates-government-agencies-use-open-source-software">legislation in Switzerland</a> mandating that government agencies use open-source software.Even cities may implement specific regulations. In 2021, Portland, Oregon, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.opb.org/article/2020/09/09/portland-passes-nations-toughest-restriction-on-facial-recognition-technology/">passed restrictions on facial recognition</a> that applied to both public and private services. Other cities, such as San Francisco, have experimented with bans that apply to specific public services, such as police departments.Duckworth argued that organizations were struggling to keep up with existing regulations, never mind those that might be implemented in the future. As more regulations arrive and are enforced, organizations could find themselves scrambling to adapt. "It will, in my personal opinion, be a madhouse for three to five years," he added.<h2 id="2775415b-3109-40e7-8e21-e8ce8fef1ab8">Moving ahead with caution</h2>AI might be the catalyst for a broader reexamination of how organizations manage their IT infrastructure. Cloud services aren't going away but may be approached with more skepticism and a greater focus on the long-term implications of adopting a particular service. The winners will be those that can bridge cloud and on-prem to provide the level of control organizations are demanding."My view is that customers that made the cloud journey learned some lessons. They know, 'Oh, if I move my data to the cloud, I'm kind of stuck,'" Tan told BI. He said he expects that organizations burned by that experience will be more skeptical of going all in on the cloud moving forward, adding momentum to interest in on-prem and hybrid cloud alternatives.

He said the third reason for failure was the small 500m x 500m site identified for landing the spacecraft. "The craft was trying to reach there by increasing the velocity. It was almost close to the ground and kept on increasing the velocity," Somanath said. He said instead of success-based design in Chandrayaan-2, the space agency opted for a failure-based design in Chandrayaan-3. "We expanded the area of landing from 500m x 500m to four km by 2.5 km. It can land anywhere, so it doesn't limit you to target a specific point. It will target a specific point only in nominal conditions. So, if the performance is poor, it can land anywhere within that area," Somanath said. He said the Chandrayaan-3 also has more fuel so that it has more capability to travel or handle dispersion or move to an alternate landing site. "We looked at very many failures - sensor failure, engine failure, algorithm failure, calculation failure. So, whatever be the failure we want it to land at the required speed and rate. So, there are different failure scenarios calculated and programmed inside," Somanath said. The ISRO chief said the Vikram lander now has additional solar panels on other surfaces to ensure that it generates power no matter how it lands. "We asked if it lands with higher velocity, what will happen? Can it not land? Then we increased the vertical velocity component from 2 m/s to 3 m/s and tested it totally," he said. The spacecraft was also tested for ability to withstand vibrations by flying it over different terrains using a helicopter, while cranes were used to test the landing processes, he said. "We did new test beds for simulation, which was not there last time. This was to look at failure scenarios," Somanath said.
