Officials said while ₹ 26,000 crore is the upfront payment on the delivery of the trains, ₹ 32,000 crore will be paid to the winning bidder over a period of 35 years for the maintenance of these trains. The <keyword id="6355455" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-railways" source="Orion">Indian Railways</keyword> is now evaluating technical bids for the contract. The financial bids will be opened in the next 45 days. According to the tender document, the successful bidder has to produce a prototype of the sleeper class for Vande Bharat trains within 24 months. The Indian Railways is targeting to roll out the first sleeper version of Vande Bharat train by the first quarter of 2024. Till now, the railways has awarded contracts for manufacture of 102 Vande Bharat trains which are all chair car. The Vande Bharat trains are expected to be a big upgrade from the premium Rajdhani Express service. The sleeper class-version of these trains will be run on the routes to cover overnight rail journey like New Delhi-Patna, New Delhi-Lucknow and others. After four years of intensive work and planning, country's first and the second Vande Bharat trains as electric multiple units at semi-high speed, were flagged off by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> in 2019 on the New Delhi-Varanasi and New Delhi-Katra in J&amp;K routes. The first VB train was flagged on the New Delhi-Varanasi route and the second one was on New Dehi-Katra route to provide fast rail transportation from the national capital to these pilgrim cities. The railway ministry is also working towards exporting these trains by 2026 to cover the international markets of South Africa and European countries. BHEL among 5 bidders for Rs 58,000 cr deal to manufacture, maintain 200 Vande Bharat trains

The order worth EUR312 million (Rs 2,643 crore approx.) includes the design and manufacturing of 234 standard gauge metro cars for Line 7 extension, which is 12.558 km of Pink line on the Mukundpur- Maujpur corridor and, the Line 8 extension, which is 28.92 km of Magenta line for the Janakpuri West - RK Ashram corridor, according to a statement from Alstom. Alstom will also design and manufacture of 78 standard gauge metro cars for the 23.622 km Silver line between Aerocity and Tughlakabad, including 15-year maintenance of these 78 cars. The statement said that Alstom would supply its Metropolis trainsets for this order. Metropolis trains offer a unique design, a wide range of configurations and ensure the highest performance due to the perfect combination of proven and reliable components and innovations, the company said. With its extensive track record, low lifecycle costs, and keen focus on passenger experience, Alstom said its Metropolis metros set the standard around the world. Alstom bags Rs 2,643 crore order to design, manufacture 312 metro cars for Delhi Metro Phase IV

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image">REUTERS/Yuriko Nakao</div></div></div>Bloomberg <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-11/siemens-said-in-talks-with-mitsubishi-on-joint-alstom-bid.html">is reporting</a> German conglomerate Siemens has approached Mitsubishi Heavy, a unit of Japan's Mitsubishi, about coming on as a partner in its bid for French firm Alstom's energy business.
That business was initially sought after by GE. But a minor rebellion in the French government scuttled GE's overtures, allowing Siemens to come in as a rival that some in France find more favorable, since it would keep control of Alstom on the continent.
But GE is still very much in the running.
"French Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg had initially said he would favor a proposal by Siemens," Bloomberg's Jacqueline Simmons, Aaron Kirchfeld and Alex Webb report. "He has since acknowledged that GE's offer is much improved after the U.S. company promised to create 1,000 French jobs. Siemens has meanwhile promised to guarantee French jobs for three years from completion of any deal."

BLOOMBERG: Siemens Talking to Mitsubishi About Joining Alstom Bid

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image">AFP</div></div></div>PARIS (Reuters) - U.S. conglomerate General Electric has improved its offer for French train and turbine maker Alstom, notably concerning the impact on jobs, an official at French President Francois Hollande's office said on Wednesday.
The comments, which followed a meeting between Hollande and GE Chief Executive Jeff Immelt, signaled a change of tone from Paris. The French government had until now criticized GE's $16.9 billion bid for Alstom's power arm and earlier this month passed a decree giving itself an effective veto on any deal.
On Tuesday evening, Immelt told French lawmakers his group would make detailed commitments to increase jobs in France, including by opening new sites.
He also said GE was considering a tie-up in rail signaling that would give Alstom control of that business, addressing government concerns that a straight sale of the power business would weaken the once-bailed out engineering group by reducing it to its smaller transport arm.
"Today we can see that GE's offer has been detailed, improved, strengthened," said the official at Hollande's office, adding, however, that there was still "some work to be done".
Shares in Alstom jumped as much as 1.9 percent. Alstom management and investors have welcomed GE's bid, saying it would give the company cash to pay its growing debts and the critical mass it lacked in a difficult global power market.
The French government had lately criticized GE's bid and sought to drum up better offers, including from Siemens, Alstom's longtime German rival, which has signaled its interest in making a competing proposal but has yet to make a formal bid.
The chairman of Siemens France said on Tuesday the group hoped to make a formal offer by June 16 to buy most of Alstom's power assets and in exchange give up its own trains business, but that it was still looking at the opportunities and risks of a tie-up.

GE Up Its Offer For Alstom In Proposed Mega-Deal

Amtrak's Inspector General found manufacturing defects in all <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-see-inside-amtraks-new-high-speed-acela-train-cars-2022-5">12 of the trainsets and 22 café cars </a>produced so far.Some of the defects, such as misaligned ceiling panels, are aesthetic, <a target="_blank" href="https://amtrakoig.gov/audit-documents/audit-reports/train-operations-acela-21-program-continues-face-significant-risk">the report, published Tuesday, says.</a> But others are safety-related, like water drainage between cars causing parts that hold the train cars together to corrode. "We want our customers to experience these new trainsets as soon as possible, but Amtrak cannot operate them for passenger service until Alstom has completed testing and meet all safety requirements," an Amtrak spokesperson told Insider. The trains' manufacturer, Alstom, says the culprit isn't the trains themselves, but rather the tracks they're supposed to run on. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Germany introduced its first hydrogen-powered commuter trains in August, 2022.</li><li> Technology and infrastructure upgrades will be critical as transportation systems evolve. </li></ul>In the race to transition to sustainable transportation, Europe has one major advantage over the United States: its expansive rail network. In 2019, the European Union racked up <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Railway_passenger_transport_statistics_-_quarterly_and_annual_data" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">415 billion passenger kilometers traveled</a> on its network, compared to around <a href="https://www.bts.gov/content/us-passenger-kilometers" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">32 billion</a> in the US.Though trains are significantly better for the environment than the glut of internal-combustion engines, they are not emission-free. In Europe, around 45% of railway lines are not electrified and typically use traditional diesel engines to transport commuters, with all the greenhouse-gas emissions that those entail.That's why one rail operator in Germany took the bold step to switch its trains to a type of fuel that has never been tested on trains before: hydrogen. While not cheap, the investment needed to make the switch will pay dividends as other transportation systems phase out fossil fuels. On August 24 this year, the new, emission-free alternative became a reality. In Lower Saxony, in northern Germany, the first hydrogen-powered commuter trains were officially commissioned for full-time service after two years of extensive testing. By the end of this year, all 14 of the trains serving Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, and Buxtehude will be powered by hydrogen. It's a transition that cost the region's Ministry of Transport 85 million euros."We wanted to reduce carbon emissions, and with this project, we are reducing 4,400 tonnes of carbon emissions every year," Melina Gnisa, a spokesperson for LNVG, the region's state-owned rail operator, said. "There were no catenary," or overhead power wires, "so we had to look for alternatives because our company decided we don't want to use diesel anymore."The train that met the brief was the Coradia iLint, manufactured by the veteran French rolling-stock producer Alstom, which had been in development since 2014.<h2>Financing technology is key to transition</h2>Research and development were funded in part by Germany's National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology, which aims to grow the technology in the country. For the iLint, Alstom received 8 million euros in federal German funds to help get the train up and running."Since the beginning, the attitude of the authorities in Germany was definitely in favor of hydrogen, and they were with us to take the risk and to develop it," said Brahim Soua, the vice president of Alstom's Regional Rolling Stock platform, who worked to bring the iLint project to fruition."Germany put in place a financing process to help and to introduce the technology in railway because we know very well that when you are introducing a new technology, there is an investment needed at the beginning," Soua said, adding that this was critical to getting the project off the ground. Otherwise, the lack of hydrogen infrastructure would have rendered the project not viable.Alstom is positioning the iLint as a like-for-like replacement for diesel trains serving regional rail routes that have not been electrified. It's not surprising, given that the design is an evolution of the company's diesel-powered Lint. Spec-wise, the iLint is very similar to its predecessor, with a maximum speed of 140 kilometers an hour and seats for around 150 to 200 passengers, depending on seating configuration.<h2>Recouping on the infrastructure investment as the world becomes greener</h2>But without a solution to the "chicken and egg" infrastructure problem, it's hard to roll out a new fuel technology because of the costs involved."The acquisition price of a hydrogen train is higher than a diesel one," Soua said. "You need investment, at least for the infrastructure and the fueling stations, which don't exist."The good news, though, is that as technology is built out, the economics should start to make more sense. According to Soua, maintenance costs on hydrogen trains are much lower, and hydrogen-powered trains will cost less than diesel after about 15 years of operation.So to seed the deployment, the German federal government also put up an additional 4.3 million euros to fund a refueling station in Bremerhaven — and this could have consequences that extend beyond the railway."When you have a refueling station somewhere, you can also use it for buses, trucks, automobiles, and so on," Soua said. "We need to see it globally as an ecosystem in such a way that even the investment is split on several transportation needs."Now that the railway is fully operational, the fueling station will deposit around 270 kilograms of hydrogen in each 15-to-20-minute-long refueling period. At the moment, hydrogen is manufactured off-site and brought in by truck. The plan is to eventually have the site make its own "green" hydrogen, by having the chemical process take place with water and the electrolysers on-site. This requires a lot of electrical energy, but due to some geographic luck, it shouldn't be a problem."We're in the north of Germany, and there's the North Sea with offshore wind power — there's a lot of opportunities to produce the hydrogen," Gnisa said.It's too early to draw any definitive conclusions about the success or lack thereof from Lower Saxony's experience, but Alstom is optimistic. The company has already signed up its second customer from Germany, as the Rhine-Main region has ordered 27 iLint trains, and similar contracts have been inked in Italy and France. Thanks to hydrogen, in the not-so-distant future, many billion more rail kilometers traveled in Europe — and the rest of the world — could be carbon-free, too.

Addressing a session on the 'future of mobility' at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2022 on Friday, Anjum Parwez, Managing Director, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (<keyword id="6367448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMRCL" source="Orion">BMRCL</keyword>), said as part of the second and third phase of the project, Bengaluru will have 314 km of metro rail connectivity by 2041. He said construction of metro lines is also progressing well on the airport side. He said the biggest challenge in urban mobility is the integration of multi-modal transport systems and moving people to get into public transport from personalised transport modes. Parwez said urban India was the most neglected area until the 1990s, as urban planning was not in sync with connectivity or mobility issues. He said BMRCL is getting a lot of support from startups in mobility to ensure that commuters have last-mile connectivity. He said the corporation is tying up with mobility providers to get people to reach the nodal point and commute to their workplaces. Parwez said the <keyword id="6367447" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Namma-Metro" source="Orion">Namma Metro</keyword> has recently gone digital with its payment options that include the use of QR code scans and UPI-based payment options which has met with good response from commuters. Also, there is no waiting time for passengers who are in a hurry as there is no need to stand in queues to buy tickets or cards now. He said BMRCL is working on a transit-oriented development where commuters live close to the stations and to the workplace. Besides, the BMRCL also intends to integrate all aggregators by bringing out a mobility card for commuters. He said the corporation is in talks with BMTC to have bus stops at metro stations to help commuters hop on and hop off both modes of transport. He said bike taxis and carpooling should be encouraged although the government of Karnataka had put brakes on their operation. The BMRCL is also working on introducing shopping options for commuters inside and outside the metro stations. He said the BMRCL plans to sell office space in metro stations and provide end-to-end solutions to all the stakeholders. Amit Bhatt, Managing Director of the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), said urbanisation in India is 33 per cent while it is about 80-85 per cent in European and American countries. He said about 66 per cent of urban infrastructure is yet to be built in India as the country is set to see a number of cities being built. The biggest challenge is to ensure zero emission, zero exclusion and zero accidents in urban transport, he said. Vadiraj Krishnamurthy, Vice President of Technology and Innovation, Bosch Global Software Technologies, said the future is software-defined fully programmable vehicles. "The key enablers of urban transport are personalised multi-modal mobility, automated mobility, electrified and connected mobility. Connecting vehicles using technology is an engineering challenge of the future," he said. <ul><li>Australia’s transport minister Andrew Constance and Premier Galdys Berejiklian inaugurated Sydney’s new fully automated driverless <keyword id="59477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Metro-train">metro train</keyword> service. </li><li>The trains are designed by French company Alstom, and were manufactured in Sricity, Andhra Pradesh, India under the ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ initiative. </li></ul>India just manufactured and delivered a fully-automated driverless train---but it will run in Australia! French major Alstom built this train at Sricity facility in Andhra Pradesh, as a part of Make in India initiative. As many as 22 such trains from India, will run as a part of a new metro line in Sydney. Australia’s transport minister Andrew Constance and Premier Galdys Berejiklian inaugurated Sydney’s new fully automated driverless metro train service. Metro projects in India In India, very few cities have metros. And only Delhi’s magenta metro line has driverless features. Apart from Delhi, metros run in nine other cities like --- Kolkata, Bengaluru, Gurugram, Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur, Kochi, Hyderabad, and Lucknow. And, not many of them are profitable. E. Sreedharan, India’s Metro Man, <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/delhi-news/free-metro-travel-just-poll-gimmick-says-e-sreedharan/story-zr9UzTi7R2y16IUuXyHxAM.html">highlighted</a> that Delhi metro was under ₹350 billion debt. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="262185" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amtrak">Amtrak</keyword>'s <keyword id="4791427" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Acela">Acela</keyword> turned 20 years old in December 2020 and its next era is rapidly approaching.</li><li>New <keyword id="6360847" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="trains">trains</keyword> from Alstom, track and station improvements, and non-stop services are set to improve the line, bringing the US closer to European-style high-speed rail.</li><li>I rode Acela for the first time last month and it was enough to make me look forward to what's to come. </li></ul>Amtrak celebrated 20 years of Acela in December 2020 as it prepares to take the service into the next-generation with new trainsets debuting this year. The high-speed line currently connects Washington and Boston with stops in every major city along the way and is a popular alternative to flying thanks to its fast journey times.The same trains have been operating Acela services since its debut in 2000 as the "Acela Express," achieving speeds of around 150 miles per hour at their fastest. They gave Americans a taste of European-style high-speed rail with a sleek design inside and out. But these trainsets are nearing extinction as Amtrak prepares to onboard its new Alstom-made Avelia Liberty trains that have already begun testing across Amtrak's network in preparation for a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amtrak-new-2-billon-acela-trains-are-delayed-full-history-2020-1">2021 debut barring potential delays</a>. The trains are set to improve all the best features of the current Acela trains and more. I took my first Acela ride in November 2020 from Boston to New York and spent just under four hours on the <keyword id="41341" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="train">train</keyword>. It wasn't the fastest way to <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> between the two cities but the train <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pandemic-travel-why-amtrak-is-better-than-flying-in-northeast-2020-12">certainly had its perks over flying</a>. Nevertheless, Acela's 20-year-run wasn't bad for America's first go at high-speed rail in the 21th century. Here's why I'm looking forward to the future of Acela after just one ride. <h2>It's fast but the new trains will be faster</h2><div type="image" title="Amtrak Acela Express" height="2656" width="3541" msid="80725420" hostid="261"></div>The top speed of Amtrak's current Acela trains is 150 miles per hour but they're often bound to travel slower due to the congested and outdated nature of the tracks along the Northeast Corridor. Only a few stretches of track can accommodate the high speeds of which Acela is capable, mostly between Boston and Providence on the New England sector of the route. But Acela is markedly faster than trains like the Northeast Regional, keeping journey times between New York and Boston and New York and Washington under four hours and three hours, respectively. That's also partially because the Acela makes fewer stops than other lines. On our journey out of Boston, I was amazed at how fast we were moving as we zoomed past cars on an adjacent highway. Keep in mind, my rail experience has larger limited been the slower Northeast Regional and my daily commute on the Long Island Rail Road and New York City Subway. Our speed quickly, however, decreased after Providence as we journeyed down the Connecticut coast and entered New York. The new Avelia Liberty trains, however, will be able to travel at faster speeds of up to 160 miles per hour on its initial runs and up to 186 miles per hour once improvements are made, according to <a href="https://nec.amtrak.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/NextGen-Fact-Sheet_Proof5.pdf">Amtrak</a>. The train's "anticipated tilting system" helps achieve these speeds on the winding tracks of the Northeast Corridor. The system will also provide a smoother ride than Acela's current models. While I didn't have a problem in that regard while sitting, trying to walk while the train was moving did sometimes prove difficult. <h2>More non-stop trains between major cities</h2><div type="image" title="Riding Amtrak Acela During the Pandemic" height="1406" width="1875" msid="80725422" hostid="261"></div>Amtrak inaugurated a new Acela service in September 2019 that saw non-stop trains between New York and Washington. The aptly named "Acela Nonstop" brought travel times down to around two and a half hours, offering a time savings of nearly 30 minutes. Bringing travel times on the line down even more made Acela more competitive against the airlines in the fight for market share. Near-hourly "shuttle" service is offered between New York, Boston, and Washington with perks like prime boarding gates and complimentary alcohol on some flights. I had taken <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pandemic-travel-why-amtrak-is-better-than-flying-in-northeast-2020-12">Acela down from Boston after flying up on Spirit Airlines</a> and the train still took longer, albeit by just a few minutes, even when factoring in getting to the airport, arriving early to go through the security checkpoint, and taking a bus downtown. When competing against the airlines, however, every minute counts. But while a popular alternative to the local trains, the service was quickly suspended due to reducing ridership during the height of the pandemic and its aftermath. Having taken a total of three Acela trips during the pandemic, I haven't seen trains more than one-quarter full, and that's even with Amtrak limiting capacity at 50%. Once the pandemic ends and Acela's riders return to the rails, the time may come to not only bring back Acela Nonstop but increase its offering to include trains to Boston or even offer a hybrid that cuts out smaller stops like Metropark in New Jersey or New Carrollton, Maryland.Amtrak has 40 trainsets on order, 40% more than the current number of Acela trains in service, allowing for more frequent service and room to expand the Nonstop. And with the new Alstom trainsets, maybe New York to Washington, and vice versa, can be done in under two and a half hours. <h2>The new trains will feature expanded onboard amenities</h2><div type="image" title="Amtrak new Acela trains interior" height="975" width="1300" msid="80725423" hostid="261"></div>I was impressed after stepping on Amtrak to see the amenities it offered including two 120v AC power outlets at every seat, complimentary WiFi, a tray table and footrest, and overhead lighting. The WiFi was strong enough to facilitate a Zoom meeting in which I participated during the ride with no interruptions or lack of quality.There were more amenities on Acela than on the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-on-spirit-airlines-newest-jet-airbus-a320neo-review-photos-2020-12">Spirit Airlines aircraft on which I'd flown to Boston</a>. Amtrak is promising more amenities on the Avelia Liberty trainsets including USB charging ports, stronger WiFi, and adjustable reading lights. Digital signage will also give the train a "futuristic look," as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amtrak-new-acela-train-cars-photo-2019-8#read-more-about-amtraks-acela-express-11">Business Insider's Graham Rapier</a> reported, while seats will have winged headrests and handles on which to grab to maintain balance when the train tilts. And in the cafe car, Amtrak says the new trains will have a greater selection from which to choose. Renderings show a new bar-like dining area with countertops, much like what current trains have instead of the tables found on the Northeast Regional.<h2>A new train hall has come to Pennsylvania Station complete with new lounges</h2><div type="image" title="Moynihan Train Hall" height="1665" width="2221" msid="80725425" hostid="261"></div>"One entered the city like a god; one scuttles in now like a rat," art critic Vincent Scully once wrote, as noted by the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/12/arts/design/a-proposal-for-penn-station-and-madison-square-garden.html?auth=login-google">New York Times</a>, regarding the transformation of Pennsylvania Station in the 20th century from an architectural masterpiece to a subterranean waiting room. New York has always been an outlier in the Northeast Corridor as featuring perhaps the least endearing station in the system. Most stations along the route in major cities - whether it be Union Station in Washington, DC, Pennsylvania Station in Baltimore, or South Station in Boston, and 30th Street Station in Philadelphia - feature the classical architecture befitting a train hall. But the days of a subpar Pennsylvania Station days are thankfully over. The long-awaited <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-moynihan-train-hall-photo-tour-penn-station-amtrak-2021-1">Moynihan Train Hall in New York City opened on January 1, 2021,</a> bringing back the glory of the original Pennsylvania Station before its demolition in the 1960s. Amtrak has a new home in New York and Acela passengers have a new lounge to enjoy. The new Metropolitan Lounge replaced ClubAcela and is accessible to Acela's first class passengers, riders with elite frequent rider status, and riders in sleeper cars.Lounge patrons will be greeted with complimentary food and beverages, power outlets, USB charging ports, and a business center.Visitors may once again arrive like gods, especially if just disembarking from the new Acela trains.
