"Assuming 80% availability of registered allopathic doctors and around 5.65 lakh <keyword id="20522856" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AYUSH-doctors" source="keywords">AYUSH doctors</keyword>, the doctor-population ratio in the country is around 1:836 which is better than the WHO standard of 1:1000," Patel stated. She also said that there are 731 medical colleges in the country with an annual intake of 1,12,112 <keyword id="20585495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MBBS-seats" source="keywords">MBBS seats</keyword> as of now. Further, there are 72,627 <keyword id="22645227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PG-seats" source="keywords">PG seats</keyword> as of date, she said. Measures taken by the government to augment medical education facilities and to improve medical standards include <keyword id="22366985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centrally-Sponsored-Scheme" source="keywords">Centrally Sponsored Scheme</keyword> (CSS) for establishment of new medical colleges by upgrading district/referral hospitals, under which 157 new medical colleges have been approved and 109 are already functional. Under the CSS, medical colleges have been upgraded to increase the number of MBBS (UG) and PG seats. Support has been provided for an increase of 4,977 MBBS seats in 83 colleges with an approved cost of Rs 5,972.20 crore, 4,058 PG seats in phase-I in 72 colleges with an approved cost of Rs 1,498.43 crore and 4,000 PG seats in phase-II in 65 colleges with an approved cost of Rs 4,478.25 crore. Besides, under "upgradation of government medical colleges by construction of super specialty blocks" component of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), 75 projects have been approved, of which 66 projects are complete. Under the Central Sector Scheme for setting up of new AIIMS, 22 AIIMS have been approved and undergraduate courses have started in 19 of these. Also, DNB qualification has been recognised for appointment as teaching faculty, to take care of shortage of faculty and there has been enhancement of age limit for appointment, extension or re-employment against posts of teachers/dean/principal/ director in medical colleges up to 70 years. <h2>Claims of Indians being unfit "extrapolated" </h2>Furthermore, Union Health Minister J P Nadda told the Lok Sabha today that WHO's recent report stating that half of India's adult population is physically unfit relied on data collected only from three states and one UT, and the results were extrapolated through a modelling technique indicating inbuilt methodological issues. Responding to a question, Nadda said the WHO defines 'sufficient physical activity' as 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activities per week (brisk walk, lifting light load etc.) or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity per week (running, digging, construction work, outdoor games etc.). The activity level so quantified is based on a self-reported response to questions about physical activity lasting at least for 10 minutes. The National NCD Monitoring Survey of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) 2020 has assessed, inter alia, physical activity amongst Indian adults and found that 58.7% had conformed to the WHO recommendations, Nadda told the Lok Sabha.

Expanding the scope of its hearing in the <keyword id="19980518" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patanjali" source="keywords">Patanjali</keyword> Ayurved case, the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Supreme Court" meta.hostid="266" meta.entityid="Supreme Court">Supreme Court</keyword> on Tuesday took a stern view of <keyword id="20610549" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="misleading-advertisements" source="keywords">misleading advertisements</keyword> by FMCG firms and asked three Union ministries to inform it about the steps they have taken to curb the practice which takes "public for a ride" and adversely affects their health. The court passed the order after Yoga guru Ramdev and his aide Balkrishna of Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. told a bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah that they have issued unqualified public apology in as many as 67 newspapers over misleading advertisements and are willing to issue additional advertisements expressing their contrition. The bench said the public apology published in newspapers were not on record and asked those to be filed within two days. It posted the matter for April 30 for further consideration. While hearing the Patanjali case, the apex court said the implementation of the relevant provisions of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and the Consumer Protection Act and the related rules also needed a closer examination. It said the issue was not limited to Patanjali but extended to all Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) firms which have been issuing "misleading advertisements and taking the public for a ride, in particular affecting the health of babies, school-going children and senior citizens who have been consuming products on the basis of the said misrepresentation". "We must clarify that we are not here to gun for a particular party or a particular agency or a particular authority. This is a PIL, and in the larger interest of the consumers, public should know which way they are going and how and why they can be misled, and how authorities are acting to prevent it," the bench said. The court asked the Union ministries of consumer affairs, information and broadcasting, and information technology to explain what action they have taken to prevent the misuse of consumer laws. It also sought an explanation from the Centre over an August 2023 letter issued by the Ministry of Ayush to the licencing authorities of all states and Union Territories and drug controllers of Ayush asking them to not initiate any action under rule 170 of Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945. The bench also asked the <keyword id="20083252" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Medical-Association" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Indian Medical Association" meta.hostid="266" meta.entityid="Indian Medical Association">Indian Medical Association</keyword> (IMA), the petitioner in the Patanjali advertisements case, to "put its house in order". It said several complaints have been made about alleged unethical acts by members of the IMA who prescribe highly expensive medicines and line of treatment. The bench also ordered impleading the National Medical Commission (NMC) as a respondent in the matter for effective assistance to the court. At the outset, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved Ltd managing director Balkrishna, told the bench they have issued on Monday unqualified apology for the "lapses" on their part. "Where? Why it is not filed?" the bench asked. Rohatgi said it was issued on Monday in 67 newspapers across the country. When the court asked the senior advocate why did the respondents wait for a whole week before publishing the public apology, Rohatgi said, "Its language had to be changed". The court also quizzed him about the size of advertisements. "Is it the same size of advertisements that you normally issue in newspapers?" it asked Rohatgi, who submitted "It costs tens of lakhs (of rupees)". The bench ordered that the apology published be filed on record and added it wanted to see the actual advertisement published in newspapers. "The said advertisements are not on record. It is submitted that the same have been collated and shall be filed in the course of the day with copies to counsel for the parties. Needful shall be done within two days with copies to counsel for the parties," it said. The counsel said additional advertisement shall be issued by Ramdev and Balkrishna tendering unqualified apology for the lapses on their part. The bench said it was necessary to implead the three central ministries in order to examine the steps taken to prevent the abuse of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act and rules, the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and the Consumer Protection Act. It said these ministries shall file affidavits enunciating the action they have taken to prevent the misuse/abuse of these statutes along with the relevant data since 2018. The bench said licencing authorities of all states and UTs shall also be impleaded as co-respondents in the matter. The bench told the IMA's counsel that while they are pointing fingers at Patanjali, "the other four fingers are also pointing at you (IMA)". On April 16, the apex court had warned Ramdev and Balkrishna against any attempt to "degrade allopathy" and permitted them to tender a "public apology and show contrition" within a week in the contempt proceedings in the misleading advertisements case against Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. The apex court is hearing a plea filed in 2022 by the IMA alleging a smear campaign against the Covid vaccination drive and modern systems of medicine. Ramdev and Balkrishna had earlier tendered an "unconditional and unqualified apology" before the top court over advertisements issued by the firm making tall claims about the medicinal efficacy of its products. "A lot of clinicians listening to the <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> story were really surprised by the lack of transparency, sort of a somewhat disorganized, presentation of clinical information. It was veiled and not logical and not easy to follow," Peter Chin-Hong, professor of medicine and infectious disease specialist at University of California San Francisco, told Business Insider.That prompted questions about Conley's qualifications, especially after the physician agreed to have Trump take the unproven coronavirus drug, hydroxychloroquine, in May."I think there've been some inconsistencies that many people have wondered about. For instance, the embracing of hydroxychloroquine when, in the initial time when the President took it, I think that many clinicians wouldn't do that," Chin-Hong added.Here's what to know about Conley's medical training, and how he became Trump's doctor.<h2>He has an extensive military history</h2><h2><div type="image" title="sean conley" height="2788" width="3717" msid="78482691" hostid="261"></div></h2>According to <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/sean-conley-do-facep-a2694b135/">Conley's LinkedIn profile</a>, he's been an emergency physician with the US Navy since 2006. But the timeline of Conley's medical training is more complicated than that.After obtaining a Bachelor's of <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword> at Notre Dame University, Conley graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.His then completed a three-year medical residency at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia before being deployed to a NATO hospital in Afghanistan for seven months.Returning to Portsmouth in 2014, Conley then served in a variety of roles at the Naval Medical Center before joining the White House staff four years later.Dr. Ronny Jackson, a retired Navy rear admiral who served as the president's physician from 2013 to 2018, handpicked Conley to be his successor, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/white-house-remains-mum-questions-about-trump-s-annual-physical-n1213266">NBC News reported</a>.Two anonymous sources told NBC News in May that many people within the White House Medical Unit saw Conley as having been unfairly promoted to the job of physician to the president without proper vetting.<h2>Conley is the first DO to serve as the president's physician</h2><div type="image" title="sean conley and co" height="3092" width="4122" msid="78482693" hostid="261"></div>Conley doesn't have an MD, or Doctor of Medicine, degree like Jackson does.Instead, Conley graduated with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, or a DO, and seems to be <a href="https://thedo.osteopathic.org/2018/05/navy-veteran-do-is-serving-as-president-donald-trumps-physician/">the first DO</a> to serve as the president's physician since Congress established the position in 1982.The focus of a DO is to emphasize a "whole-body" approach, looking at <a href="https://medschool.ucla.edu/body.cfm?id=1158&amp;action=detail&amp;ref=1019ref=1019">holistic medicine and disease prevention</a> to treat a patient ailments, rather than isolating specific symptoms. Unlike naturopaths, however, they get licensed by the same state boards as MDs, have near-identical training, and can prescribe medications and treat patients in all 50 states.Historically, DOs may offer manual treatment on muscles and joints (known as osteopathic manipulative treatment, or OMT), while MDs typically refer patients to a physical therapist or prescribe medications. Recently, the treatment lines have started to blur, because MDs are being trained in and using more of a whole body approach now, and <a href="https://jaoa.org/article.aspx?articleid=2093117">DOs are using less OMT in visits</a>.But Chin-Hong said the concern over the type of Conley's medical degree is unwarranted: "This is not a time to be divisive about MD versus DO."DOs receive the same amount of training as MDs do: They complete pre-med course work as undergraduates, take the MCAT exam, and attend medical school for four years before completing a multi-year residency program.DO degrees include an additional 200 hours of coursework beyond the general medical school curriculum that focuses on muscles and nerves, to learn how to perform OMT.These massage techniques help DOs diagnose illness or injury, and enable physicians help their patients' bodies self- heal. MDs, by contrast, study allopathic medicine, which is based on treating specific symptoms with their remedies."In the past, maybe people had conceived ideas about MD versus DO, but I would say in modern medicine, at least in San Francisco, by the time they reach up to, you know, the level of your colleagues, it's pretty much indistinguishable," he said.That being said, Chin-Hong said there are aspects of Conley's recent medical track record that are worrisome.<h2>A controversial coronavirus treatment</h2>In May, Conley <a href="https://int.nyt.com/data/documenthelper/6959-letter-from-white-house-physic/e3e29d81b7d6339b9f56/optimized/full.pdf">issued a memorandum</a> confirming he'd approved Trump's use of the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a preventive measure against COVID-19 after the president touted it as a pandemic <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/17/health/trump-hydroxychloroquine-coronavirus.html">"game changer."</a>"After numerous discussions he and I had regarding the evidence for and against the use of hydroxychloroquine, we concluded the potential benefit from treatment outweighed the relative risk," Conley wrote. <div type="image" title="plaquenil hydrochloroquine chloroquine drugs covid-19 coronavirus" height="624" width="832" msid="78482696" hostid="261"></div>Experts like Chin-Hong viewed Conley's move with skepticism."At that point, when President Trump took the initial course of hydroxychloroquine, there was ample evidence already — and now there's even more — that there was no benefits, in fact, there was a lot of potential harm in cardiac arrhythmias or other adverse effects," Chin-Hong said.Trump's support for hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug, started in March, when <a href="https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/journal-publisher-concerned-over-hydroxychloroquine-study-67405">a French study</a> suggested it could be effective against the coronavirus and the drug received emergency authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration. Later, the journal that published the findings suggested the study <a href="https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/journal-publisher-concerned-over-hydroxychloroquine-study-67405">was poorly done</a>. In the months that followed, multiple studies showed the drug <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hydroxychloroquine-fails-to-prevent-coronavirus-study-in-nejm-2020-6">didn't prevent coronavirus infections</a> in people who were recently exposed to the virus, or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hydroxychloroquine-fails-covid-19-prevention-study-2020-7">decrease the severity of symptoms</a>.A month after Trump's 10-day hydroxychloroquine treatment, the FDA <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hydroxychloroquine-emergency-use-authorization-revoked-by-fda-2020-6">revoked the drug's emergency approval</a>, citing a lack of evidence showing the drug worked. The National Institutes of Health also <a href="https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/">recommends against the use of hydroxychloroquine in its coronavirus treatment guidelines.</a><h2>A press conference gone awry</h2>Conley held a briefing on Saturday for the first time since Trump's coronavirus diagnosis. But in it, he evaded many critical questions. He wouldn't say whether Trump had at any point received supplemental oxygen, when the president last tested negative, or what temperature his fever reached.While Conley answered the first of those three questions during a follow-up press conference Sunday morning, the fact remains that it's difficult to discern key details about the president's condition.<div type="image" title="Trump, Walter Reed" height="1333" width="1777" msid="78482698" hostid="261"></div>"Traditionally, anyway, when presidents have been sick, the public actually gets a lot of information about the leader of the country," Chin-Hong said. "Because it has to do with the security of the country, whether we feel, you know, confident that our country is being ruled with the right structure at right time."Conley failed to do that on Saturday as he addressed reporters and sidestepped questions about what prompted Trump's helicopter flight to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, according to Chin-Hong, who has been caring for COVID-19 patients throughout the pandemic."I think probably the most glaring absence was the dancing around with the discussion around oxygen requirements. The reporters kept asking him about oxygen and trying to get more and more specific. If there is pressure to say certain things and not to say certain things, that could be part of the game as well," he said.

New Delhi, Apr 30 () The Delhi government on Thursday set up a COVID-19 testing centre exclusively for police personnel in wake of several members of the force testing positive for the novel coronavirus.The country's first ever COVID-19 testing centre for police staff has been set up at Primestay Hotel in northwest Delhi's Shalimar Bagh, an official said. He said Chief Secretary Vijay Dev has directed health authorities to ensure dedicated services to frontline police personnel in this battle against the deadly virus."The chief secretary also directed senior police officers to take all steps for safety and protection of field-level police personnel," the official said.At the dedicated testing centre, samples will be collected from 8 am to 4 pm every day. The centre has 15 rooms for collecting samples from police personnel, he said, adding this unique endeavour of the Delhi government shall go a long way in boosting the morale of police in this time of crisis.According to a senior police official, the Delhi Police is 82,000 strong force personnel."An allopathic doctor, three Ayush doctors, lab technicians and nursing orderlies have been posted at the COVID-19 testing centre to ensure round-the-clock medical care of the police personnel suspected of having contracted the virus," the official said.Arrangement of sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical equipment have also been made to ensure observance of requisite standard protocols, he said.Earlier this month, Lt Governor Anil Baijal had directed authorities to set up dedicated COVID-19 facility to treat infected Delhi Police personnel, officials said. Her first test was conducted on September 4 and the last one on January 7. Each time, she tested corona positive she has left medical practitioners confused. The patient, Sarada Devi, has been residing in Bharatpur's Apna Ashram since August last year. Being a new entrant to the ashram, she was tested for Covid as per the regular protocol of the ashram where she came out positive. "Since then, she has been staying in isolation and has been given all three types of treatment namely allopathic, Homeopathic and Ayurveda. However, despite all treatments, each time, her report comes positive. "Surprisingly, despite having positive Covid report, she is healthy and has gained around 7-8 kilo," said Dr B.M. Bhardwaj, from Ashram, adding that she was too weak and fragile when she had come here and could not even stand on her own. "Although her present condition satisfy us as she is healthy, however, her Covid-19 status is at another level and we are worried." "We have called Bharatpur Health officials and Sawai Man Singh hospital, Jaipur, health officials too to take up her case and explain her reports," he added. Ashram officials said when she was brought in it was said that her mental and physical health is not too good. Since then, she has been staying here, however, following all medical protocols. "She is still staying in isolation in ashram as we need to care for other people staying in ashram," said an official. Bhardwaj said that the doctors who visited here have opined that low immunity in Sharda Devi may be the reason that her tests are continuously coming positive. Kaptan Singh, CMHO Bharatpur told IANS that the patient is now completely healthy and does not show any ILI symptoms. "As per the rule, those showing no symptoms for COVID-19 for last 10 days should be treated as normal," he said adding that sometimes, the dead virus houses inside stomach and intestine which brings in positive report although the person at this time does not transmit the virus, he said adding that the patient has low immunity and that must be the reason she is showing positive report."

New Delhi, Apr 7 () To ensure optimal utilisation of resources to provide care to novel coronavirus patients, the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday proposed classification of health facilities into three categories COVID Care Centre, Dedicated COVID Health Centre and Dedicated COVID Hospital.These COVID-19 dedicated facilities will have separate earmarked areas for suspected cases and confirmed cases, and ensure the available hospital bed capacity is used only for moderate to severe cases of the infection, it said in a document.The ministry said that under no circumstances should suspected and confirmed cases be allowed to mix. "Series of measures have been taken by both the central and state governments to break the chain of transmission. One among these is to isolate all suspect and confirmed cases of COVID-19," it said. "However, as the number of cases increases, it would be important to appropriately prepare health systems and use the existing resources judicially," the ministry said.The document stated that available data in India suggests that nearly 70 per cent of cases affected with the infection either exhibit mild or very mild symptoms. Such cases may not require admission to COVID-19 blocks or dedicated COVID-19 hospitals, it said. COVID Care Centres will offer care only for cases that have been clinically assigned as mild or very mild or as suspect cases, according to the document.These centres can be makeshift facilities and can be set up in hostels, hotels, schools, stadiums, lodges, among other places, both public and private. If the need be, existing quarantine facilities can also be converted into COVID Care Centres, the standard operating procedures (SOPs) in the document stated.Functional hospitals like community health centres (CHCs), which can handle regular non-COVID cases should be designated as COVID Care Centres as a last resort. This is important as essential non-COVID medical services like those for pregnant women and newborns are to be maintained, it said.Every Dedicated COVID Care Centre must also have a dedicated basic life support ambulance (BLSA) equipped with sufficient oxygen support round-the-clock for ensuring safe transport of a case to dedicated higher facilities if the symptoms progress from mild to moderate or severe, the SOPs said.The human resource to man these care centres can be drawn from AYUSH doctors. The Ministry of AYUSH has also carried out training sessions. Their work can be guided by an allopathic doctor, the SOPs stated.The Dedicated COVID Health Centre (DCHC) are hospitals that will offer care for all cases that have been clinically assigned as moderate and these should either be a full hospital or a separate block in a hospital with preferably separate entry and exit zones, it said. Private hospitals can also be designated as COVID Dedicated Health Centres.These centres must necessarily be mapped to one or more Dedicated COVID Hospitals and every DCHC must also have a dedicated basic life support ambulance equipped with sufficient oxygen support for ensuring safe transport of a case to a dedicated COVID Hospital if the symptoms progress from moderate to severe, the SOP said. The third category --- Dedicated COVID Hospitals will offer comprehensive care primarily for those who have been clinically assigned as severe and these should either be a full hospital or a separate block in a hospital, it said. These hospitals will have fully equipped intensive care units, ventilators and beds with oxygen support. The Dedicated COVID Hospitals would also be referral centers for DCHCs and COVID Care Centers. All these facilities will follow strict infection prevention and control practices, the ministry said in the SOPs. States and union territories have been asked to identify hospitals with dedicated and separate space and set up fever clinics, which can be set up in CHCs, in rural areas, it said.
