According to data released by GJEPC -- the apex body for the gems and jewellery industry in India -- the overall <keyword id="19916774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports" source="keywords">exports</keyword> in the category in July 2023 stood at Rs $ 2,170.71 million. "The exports are mainly affected due to decline in demand following geopolitical disturbance in key markets like the US and China. The demand in the China market has drastically slowed down due to a struggling economy," GJEPC Chairman Vipul Shah told PTI. The overall export of cut and polished diamonds (CPD) declined 21.34 per cent in July to $907.67 million from $1.17 billion in the year-ago period. Gold jewellery exports also witnessed a 10.53 per cent decline in July to $530.38 million compared to $603.12 million in the same period of last year. Meanwhile, the apex trade body said during the recent six-day India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) Premiere 2024, held from August 9-13, business worth about $12 billion (approximately Rs 1 lakh crore) was generated. IIJS Premiere 2024 attracted over 50,000 buyers and international delegations from over 13 countries, including Cambodia, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, and Uzbekistan. "IIJS Premiere 2024 was a tremendous success, generating over $12 billion in business for our exhibitors. The business was mainly dominated by gold jewellery following weakness in prices of the yellow metal," Shah said. The show featured an array of products that highlighted the brilliance in designs and clearly reflected the shift towards catering to millennials and Gen Z, he said. "IIJS Premiere 2024 played a crucial role in boosting exports and expanding our global footprint. The presence of these international participants underscores the importance of IIJS as a premier platform for connecting with global markets and enhancing trade opportunities," he added. With 13 per cent returns, gold continued to be the most attractive investment option in 2023, he stated. But many investors remained sceptical: was this IPO an honest attempt to expand Hyundai’s footprint in India or was it trying to offer a way to cashout for existing investors and promoters? Or perhaps, is it an attempt by the Korean chaebol — a large family-owned business conglomerate — to break free from the aforementioned “Korean Discount”? When shares listed on October 22, these concerns seemingly weighed on the minds of most investors and the stock promptly dipped 5% below the issue price on the day. A tepid grey market performance had already foreshadowed this muted debut in the Indian markets. Now, after almost 35 trading sessions on Indian market, the stock remains almost exactly at price it listed on October 22 at Rs 1820—no gain, no loss. <h3>The gamble of hyper-valuation</h3>Much of this hesitation stemmed from Hyundai’s valuation. On listing, Hyundai was valued at $18 billion, positioning it as one of India’s most valuable automotive companies. However, such high valuations often temper investor enthusiasm, resulting in more cautious short-term outcomes. For most investors, the Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio is the most preferred parameter to gauge if a company is overvalued or undervalued. With a P/E ratio of 26.3, HMIL was priced significantly above the Indian automotive industry average of 24.4. HMIL’s South Korean parent Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) trades at a meagre 3.07, believe it or not! For Indian investors, the high premium hinted at overvaluation despite Hyundai’s strong domestic position. Such stark difference in valuation obviously sparked debates — is the Indian market assigning a premium to Hyundai Motor India’s growth potential, or is it simply reflecting the general exuberance around the prospects of the Indian economy? Another concern is the allocation of IPO proceeds. Hyundai’s IPO was structured as an offer for sale (OFS), meaning all funds raised would flow to the parent company rather than Hyundai India’s operations. Although Hyundai has committed to investing in R&amp;D for EVs and hybrids, critics argue that the lack of immediate reinvestment in India’s operations reflects a missed opportunity for domestic growth. Despite the early disappointment, Hyundai was confident that the valuation was fair. It did have some factors going for it, in addition to the fact that other auto giants like Mahindra &amp; Mahindra and <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> command even higher P/E ratios. And looking at the company fundamentals, it does seem like Hyundai is playing a long-term game. <h3>Hyundai in India: A proven track record</h3>Despite the initial stumble, Hyundai India’s long-term story is compelling. Since entering the Indian market in 1996, the automaker has sold over 8 million vehicles and firmly occupies the second spot in the domestic passenger vehicle market, trailing only Maruti Suzuki. India's merchandise <keyword id="35090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports" source="Orion">exports</keyword> slipped by 2.83 per cent to USD 33.90 billion in November while the <keyword id="113688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trade-deficit" source="Orion">trade deficit</keyword> narrowed to USD 20.58 billion, according to government data. <keyword id="35091" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="imports" source="Orion">Imports</keyword> also fell by 4.33 per cent to USD 54.48 billion in November, the data released by the commerce ministry on Friday showed. Cumulatively, the country's merchandise exports in April-November FY2023-24 contracted by 6.51 per cent to USD 278.8 billion. Imports were also down by 8.67 per cent to USD 445.15 billion in the eight-month period due to a fall in <keyword id="522549" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oil-imports" source="Orion">oil imports</keyword>. Oil imports dipped to USD 113.65 billion as against USD 139.29 billion in April-November 2022-23. The trade deficit - difference between imports and exports - during the eight-month period was USD 166.35 billion against USD 189.21 billion in the corresponding period last year. Briefing reporters here, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said that given the global situation, India's export numbers are good. All key export sectors have recorded negative growth during the April-November period of this fiscal and that include petroleum products, <keyword id="44517" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gems" source="Orion">gems</keyword> and jewellery, chemicals, garments, and engineering goods. Sectors which registered positive growth include electronics, iron ore, and pharma. However, gold imports increased by 21 per cent to USD 32.93 billion. Electronic goods' imports have risen to USD 57.83 billion during April-November 2023-24 against USD 51.89 billion in the same period last year. The gold imports in November rose by 6.24 per cent to USD 3.44 billion. Oil imports during the month, however, dipped by 8.47 per cent to USD 14.93 billion. Barthwal said the global trade is suffering but, "we are holding the fort". He added that GDP growth of many countries are "not so high", interest rate regime is not softening, global conflicts are aggravating, irrespective of these issues, "we are doing well". Exports in October had grew by 6.21 per cent. According to the data, the estimated value of services export for November is USD 28.69 billion, as compared to USD 26.93 billion in November 2022. During the eight-month period, these exports stood at USD 220.66 billion as compared to USD 208.30 billion in April-November 2022. The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has forecast that global trade will grow only by 0.8 per cent in 2023. According to UNCTAD report, global trade expected to shrink by nearly 5 per cent in 2023 amid geopolitical strains and shifting trade patterns.

The gems and jewellery exports grew 2.48% year-on-year to ₹3,00,462.52 crore (over $36 billion) in FY23, according to the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). Addressing the media, on the sidelines of an event here on Monday evening, the GJEPC Chairman said that the Commerce Ministry has given a target of $42 billion for the gems and jewellery segment exports in 2023-24. "For gems and jewellery, the major contributing market is the US and China, the demand is slowing there. Rising <keyword id="888190" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interest-cost" source="Orion">interest cost</keyword>, <keyword id="22195" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="Orion">inflation</keyword>, all these concerns and consumers' confidence is also going down," Shah said. Going ahead, "we expect that overall we should see a 10 to 15 % decline in the gems and jewellery exports," he said on GJEPC estimates for the current fiscal ending March. Diamonds constitute more than 55% of the overall gems and jewellery export basket, Shah said. The exports target (for the current fiscal) is $42 billion, which was given by the Ministry of Commerce, he added.

New Delhi, <keyword id="44517" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gems">Gems</keyword> and <keyword id="463718" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="jewellery-exporters">jewellery exporters</keyword> have been permitted to send their goods across the globe to their buyers using the convenience of cost effective and reliable courier services. <keyword id="9257566" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-central-board-of-indirect-taxes">The Central Board of Indirect Taxes</keyword> and Customs (CBIC) has issued a circular clarifying that <keyword id="10424966" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="extant-regulations">extant regulations</keyword> do not restrict exports of gems and jewellery through the courier mode and such restrictions only apply to imports. This would mean that gems and jewellery exports could be done through courier services following all other regulations in place for such exports. Doubts had arisen over use of courier services for exports as Regulation 2(2)(a)(iv) of the Courier Imports and Exports (Electronic Declaration and Processing) Regulations, 2010 places a restriction on imports of precious and semi-precious stones, gold or silver in any form, through courier. The Regulation 2(2) (a) (iv) reads as "These regulations shall not apply to the following imported goods requiring testing of samples thereof or reference to the relevant statutory authorities or to experts before their clearance, namely precious and semi-precious stones, gold or silver in any form". Thus, the restriction imposed by Regulation 2(2)(a)(iv) on gems and jewellery is applicable only on their imports, CBIC has clarified.
