<ul class="summary-list"><li>My 8-year-old loves Lego blocks and has been asking for years to go to <keyword id="23618278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Legoland" source="keywords">Legoland</keyword>.</li><li>As a <keyword id="21623863" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="single-mom" source="keywords">single mom</keyword>, finances can be tight, and I needed to figure out how to make it happen.</li></ul>For years, my 8-year-old son has said he wants to be a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lego-master-builders-life-size-sculptures-2016-7">master builder for The Lego Group</a>. So many of our bedtime stories were about Legoland, and I wanted to take him there as badly as he wanted to visit. It reminded me of visiting SeaWorld as a teenager and being inspired to study marine biology. However, as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/having-cleaning-person-takes-up-budget-but-its-worth-it-2022-4">single mom, finances can be tight</a>, and I knew it would take some strategic planning and scrimping to make the trip happen. Although some parents are willing to go into debt for their dream vacations, I'm not. I've always valued experiences over material things, but not if it breaks the bank. <h2>We created a budget for our trip</h2>In the weeks leading up to our trip, I asked my son to help create our itinerary with one activity per day. The highlight of the weeklong <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/los-angeles-kid-friendly-city-travel-guide-2024-8">vacation would be Legoland</a>, and we put together a list of attractions in the San Diego area that ranged from free options like the beach or low-cost museum visits to the pricier attractions. As I worked on the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-dont-pay-for-accommodations-traveling-trusted-housesitters-review-2024">big-picture budget</a>, I also helped my son create his own. He had been really excited to hear a friend describe how his savings account grew money over time. So when we sold his bike for $80 early in the summer, I set the money aside in my high-yield savings account for his spending money. As for the trip itself, there were a few things I could take advantage of. I was able to cash in a couple of bonds that my grandfather purchased for me decades ago, I had <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-start-collecting-air-miles-2017-9">air miles I could use for the short trip</a> from Oregon to California, and we had access to a family timeshare. Had we not had some help with these expenses, I likely would have shortened the trip or continued saving for another year. I focused on finding deals for the rental car, food, and attractions and saved in those areas by visiting mid-week and buying tickets that included meals. My one splurge was an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/legoland-new-york-resort-hotel-family-review-2023-10">overnight stay at the Legoland hotel</a>, which was completely worth it when I saw my son's smile as we walked into our Ninjago-themed room and played with the Lego bricks in the pool. <h2>We talked about how much money we had to spend each day</h2>We <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-new-yorker-found-surprising-about-visiting-california-photos-2021-12">landed in San Diego</a> early Monday afternoon, dropped off our bags, and headed to Trader Joe's to grab snacks and breakfast fixings for the week. My son was amazed by everything he saw — the palm trees, the playground we spotted across the street, and our big studio room. I thought back to the many trips I'd taken over the years while enjoying seeing the city through his eyes. My son had a nice sum to spend during the week. He'd been saving his allowance, and I matched the proceeds from the sale of his bike. He had earned a meager amount of interest in the savings account, and we talked about how, had the money stayed in the account longer, he would have earned more. He wanted a $150 Lego set at Legoland, so he knew he had limited funds to spend elsewhere. At the start of each day, we discussed how much he had to spend, and then he carefully made a decision at each attraction. Despite this, there were some additional requests for me to buy things, and although I stayed firm on most, I did give in to some, like Ninjago pajamas, which he needed anyway. He loved wearing them around the park the next day. Every place we went had souvenir penny machines. I've collected these since I was a kid and was excited when Noah asked to get them, happily contributing the 50 cents or a dollar it took for the little memento. I stood behind him and thought about which imprint I'd choose as he carefully picked his own, like the Komodo dragon at the San Diego Zoo or the dolphins at SeaWorld. <h2>We slowed down and enjoyed free things</h2>As our energy decreased in the waning days of our trip, we slowed down. At first, I'd really wanted to maximize our time and take in all that we could, hoping to "get our money's worth," but by Friday, we needed a break. A late start wouldn't hurt our visit to SeaWorld, which was open until 8 p.m. We hung out in our studio, eating breakfast and lunch there before heading out. It was a nice reminder that vacation doesn't always have to be about seeing and doing everything; it can also be about relaxing. We spent our last day with friends, enjoying a hike overlooking La Jolla and eventually moving closer to the beach to watch the waves and sea lions. Our activity that day was another beautiful reminder that nature is free and entertaining in its own right. In the days following the trip, I felt exhausted by the daily money decisions yet relieved and satisfied that I navigated them. Creating meaningful moments doesn't require going into debt; instead, it can be about intention and focus on what's important. My son will never know how much I spent on that trip. What he'll remember is seeing the panda at the San Diego Zoo and driving the cars at Legoland. And that's exactly what I want him to remember. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Elon Musk is calling for deregulation and spending cuts to make the government more efficient.</li><li>The billionaire's mindset echoes previous efforts to run the US government like a business.</li></ul><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk">Elon Musk</a> is on a mission to make the US government more efficient, touting deregulation and decreased spending in public appearances as he <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-trump-cabinet-election-x-2024-9">courts a role</a> in a potential second Trump administration.The billionaire evangelized about efficiency during a live appearance at the All-In podcast Summit in Los Angeles on Monday, suggesting he would draw on his business acumen to slash federal spending if chosen as the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-adopts-elon-musk-plan-cut-government-spending-efficiency-reform-2024-9">head of Trump's would-be government efficiency commission</a>."We do have an opportunity to do a once-in-a-lifetime deregulation and reduction in the size of government," Musk said at the summit appearance about a potential <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-wants-elon-musk-on-his-cabinet-2024-8">Trump win</a>.But two political scientists told Business Insider that Musk's desire to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://hbr.org/2017/03/the-u-s-cannot-be-run-like-a-business">run the US government like a private business</a> — an approach many private sector professionals have supported for decades — isn't as foolproof as the CEO might think.Musk did not respond to a request for comment.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-donald-trump-feud-relationship-timeline-2022-7">Musk has done a 180</a> in his support for Trump. The billionaire endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016, but after Trump won, accepted a role on two of the then-president's economic advisory councils. He later departed the administration, citing Trump's environmental policies.But since Musk officially endorsed Trump in July, he's repeatedly <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1834104386303520822">posted</a> on X about the need for government efficiency."The idea that you can run the entire government as a business, it's just not designed that way," said Patricia Crouse, a practitioner in residence of political science and public administration at the University of New Haven. "You have to work around our system of federalism."Trump, a businessman turned politician, based much of his first presidential campaign on the notion that his <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/politics/wp/2017/03/27/trumps-idea-to-run-the-government-like-a-business-is-an-old-one-in-american-politics/">experience in the private sector</a> would guide his approach to politics.While perhaps misguided, both experts said it's not an entirely unfounded line of thinking. According to the academics, the government is inefficient in many ways, and accusations that federal agencies waste time and money are not always unwarranted.But the push to make the government work more like a business <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-efficiency-isnt-best-measurement-government-policy-2022-6">misunderstands a fundamental element</a> of US federalism — profit is not the end-all, be-all, political science experts said."Government is almost always more inefficient than the private sector because their motives are just different," said Christian Grose, a professor of political science at the University of Southern California.<div type="image" title="Al Gore and Bill Clinton stand at a podium holding a government report" height="1460" width="2921" msid="113345808" hostid="261" sizebytes="110754"></div><h2 id="7c8addd5-408c-4950-b159-3797e89f7a84">Profit vs. Protection</h2>Efforts to privatize parts of the US government date back decades. The modern-day push for a business-like government has its roots in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/theres-a-big-difference-between-reaganomics-and-trumponomics-2017-3">Reaganomics</a>, the economic policy put forth by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, which reduced regulation, slashed government spending, and scaled down the federal workforce.The other side of the aisle took a similar approach in 1993 when then-Vice President <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/im-a-recovering-politician-and-wont-run-for-office-again-al-gore-2022-7">Al Gore</a> launched the Reinventing Government initiative, which attempted to streamline government processes and minimize bureaucracy.Former President George W. Bush also had a business background, making his pre-presidency fortune in the Texas oil industry. Once in office, Bush cut regulations with his Faith-Based and Community Initiative, which sought to outsource some social services to faith-based groups.Grose said the pro-business mentality is present in local and state government, too, adding that private sector professionals often run gubernatorial races on such platforms.Political experts said it makes sense that business leaders like Musk would see only inefficiency and wastefulness in the government's operations."In the private sector, the motive is profit. The less efficient you are, the less profitable you are," Grose said. "But inefficiency in the private sector isn't the same."The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/privitizing-public-goods-healthcare-education-doesnt-work-opinion-2022-1">government's job isn't to make money,</a> but to regulate and keep people safe."Sometimes that's not efficient in an economic sense," Grose added.Consider, too, that the government and businesses serve very different stakeholders, Grose said. CEOs have to answer to stockholders and a board of directors — the president has to answer to every American in the country.<div type="image" title="Elon Musk and donald Trump sit at a table" height="2200" width="3300" msid="113345810" hostid="261" sizebytes="236978"></div><h2 id="77ff06c1-a7ce-42dd-87ed-6be17fc49a6d">The pitfalls of privatized government</h2>Crouse said the consequences could be dire if Trump and Musk are able to make massive cuts to federal agencies."If you decide you want to run the government entirely like a business, you're going to see things like poverty and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-job-market-unemployment-rising-federal-reserve-interest-rate-cut-2024-7">unemployment</a> increase because it becomes every man for himself," Crouse said.For all of its faults, the federal government has a fail-safe of sorts, thanks, in part, to its massive size, Crouse said. She added that outsourcing critical government services to private companies runs the risk that those services could disappear if the company went bankrupt."A business isn't really self-correcting, at least not as easily as government is," Crouse said.Crouse said that privatizing the federal government could also lead to increased corruption, pointing to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/private-prisons-lobby-for-their-own-existence-2016-8">for-profit prison industry</a> as one example. In 2008, two Pennsylvania judges were convicted of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://apnews.com/article/crime-trending-news-government-and-politics-6f30f575dc739415af1e5b47b1be50f0">accepting money in return</a> for sending kids to private detention centers to increase occupancy."Businesses are out to make a profit, so they're going to do what they can to increase profits, and if the consumer gets hurt in the process of doing that, well, that's all a part of business," Crouse said.Beyond the logistical issues associated with a business-like government, Grose said he was skeptical of the sentiment at the heart of Musk's comments earlier this week, casting doubt on whether a second Trump presidency would result in "once-in-a-lifetime" deregulation.While Trump did engage in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wall-street-dodd-frank-deregulation-bill-trump-gop-obama-legacy-2018-5">some deregulation</a> during his first term, Grose said he didn't behave like a traditional business Republican, citing his tariffs and tax cuts, the latter of which helped the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.propublica.org/article/national-debt-trump">national debt surge.</a>"It's not obvious to me that he is a massive budget cutter based on past experience," Grose added.Both Crouse and Grose also expressed hesitation about taking business advice from Musk, pointing to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-looks-like-he-is-destroying-x-intentionally-2023-11">breakdown of Twitter, now X</a>, after the billionaire bought the site in 2022.Ultimately, however, both said the 235-year-old federalism that governs America simply isn't equipped to handle the pressures faced by private businesses."My fear is that it would collapse," Crouse said.

Although it did not divulge the size of the deal, market watchers say that at BT's valuation of roughly USD 15 billion dollars, the deal could be in the ballpark of USD 4 billion. The shares will be purchased through Bharti Televentures UK, which is wholly-owned by Bharti Global. Bharti hopes the investment will further help create new synergies in the telecom sector between India and UK in the areas of AI and <keyword id="19916120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G" source="keywords">5G</keyword> R&amp;D and core engineering among others, "offering great potential to collaborate on industry best practices and emerging technologies". It is pertinent to mention here that Bharti and BT have a relationship going back more than two decades. In 1997, BT acquired a 21 per cent stake in Bharti Airtel, and hence Bharti's latest move to acquire a 24.5 per cent chunk in the iconic British company marks a defining moment for the Indian telecom conglomerate. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises said: "Bharti and British Telecom (BT) have an enduring relationship going back more than two decades wherein BT owned 21 per cent stake along with two board seats in Bharti Airtel Limited from 1997-2001. Bharti's investment in BT aims to support the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards his vision in elevating and broadening the India-UK ties, the release said. It noted that during the recently concluded visit of UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy to India, the UK-India Technology Security Initiative was announced to expand collaboration in critical and emerging technologies across priority sectors including telecom. Sunil Mittal said: "This investment in BT aims to support the commitment of our Prime Minister towards his vision in elevating and broadening the India-UK ties. Bharti's own record of owning and operating telecom and broadband networks around the world is underpinned by placing customers, digital innovation and operational efficiency at the heart of its business". The General Social Survey has found that Americans across the board have become more supportive of access to abortion in any circumstance, but the shift among single women has been especially dramatic. In its 2022 survey, two-thirds of single women said that abortion should be available for any reason, a view held by less than half of single women a decade earlier. While men have also become more supportive of abortion, they haven't shifted nearly as much as single women.It's no coincidence that the Harris campaign is emphatic in its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harris-trump-abortion-presidential-debate-women-reproductive-rights-2024-9">support for abortion and reproductive rights</a>, most recently proposing the elimination of the filibuster to pass federal legislation legalizing abortion. Unlike Biden, Harris has approached the issue <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-trump-biden-abortion-rights-roe-arizona-ruling-2024-4">more directly and unapologetically</a>. To underscore the political power of single women, Trump — after previously <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-abortion-views-biden-arizona-2024-election-2024-4">refusing to answer the question</a> — recently said that if elected, he would veto a national abortion ban.Earlier this year, I wrote about the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-gender-gap-young-men-women-dont-agree-politics-2024-1">growing political divide between young men and women</a> and how the gap began to form in the wake of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/me-too-movement-founder-tarana-burke-says-it-needs-a-narrative-shift-2019-4">#MeToo movement</a>. As celebrities, whistleblowers, and regular women felt emboldened to speak out about their sexual mistreatment, women gained a sense of solidarity with each other. A 28-year-old woman <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2022/09/29/more-than-twice-as-many-americans-support-than-oppose-the-metoo-movement/">interviewed by the Pew Research Center</a> in 2022 about her support for #MeToo said: "I feel it's good for people to know they aren't alone and there are a lot of people out there that have gone through the same things they may have."The cultivation of shared experiences, especially online, helps explain why so many unmarried women believe that what happens to other women in the US has a direct bearing on their own lives, a phenomenon referred to as "linked fate." In a 2022 Survey Center on American Life study, 63% of single women said that in all ways or in most ways, what happens to other women in the US affects their own lives.This newfound alliance has thrived even as gender inequality and sexual misconduct have persisted. A 2020 Pew Research Center study found a dramatic uptick in the number of incidents of sexual harassment on social media young women reported. More than one in three young women reported being stalked, called a derogatory name, or threatened. In a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/from-swiping-to-sexting-the-enduring-gender-divide-in-american-dating-and-relationships/">2023 study</a> my team conducted, four in 10 single women said they had received unsolicited sexual images. In the wake of #MeToo, more women have reported feeling afraid of becoming a victim of sexual assault, a fear that is felt more acutely among unmarried women. In a 2023 Gallup survey, nearly four in 10 single women reported that they frequently worried about being sexually assaulted or raped. Only 16% of married women said the same.These fears gain more weight considering that being single is no longer a temporary stage for many women — it's a permanent lifestyle for many. With the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/death-of-typical-american-nuclear-family-economic-crisis-marriage-divorce-2024-3">average age of first marriages</a> continuing to climb, even women who end up married or in long-term partnerships now spend more time living and working on their own. Issues such as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-expensive-cities-for-childcare-daycare-us-affordable-care-cost-2023-5">childcare</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pay-gap-by-state-how-much-women-and-men-earn-2024-3">wage gaps</a>, and protections for women become even more important when you're building a life without a partner.More than anything, what defines the politics of single women is the growing unease they feel about women's place in American society. For most of the past two decades, women felt largely content with their treatment in the US. That all changed after Trump's election and the #MeToo movement. Less than half of women in a 2021 Gallup survey said they felt satisfied about the way women were treated in American society, a historical low. Single women were the least satisfied.The combined feelings of connectedness and discontent have critical political implications. The belief that women across America face similar struggles fosters a sense of solidarity that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/21565503.2021.1908371">research</a> has found can spur political engagement.In one way, the Democrats got lucky with Harris. Even though single women typically support Democrats, they were not overly enthusiastic about Biden's candidacy. But poll after poll has found that single women have become strongly supportive of Harris.While she has downplayed the historic nature of her candidacy, the possibility of electing the first female president is important to single women voters, which could explain the surge in support for Harris. In a new poll by my team at the Survey Center on American Life, 60% of single women voters said the election of a female president was "very important." Far fewer married women voters, 43%, shared this view. But even if Harris has been circumspect about the issue of gender, her campaign has engaged in extensive outreach to women's groups, such as Win With Black Women, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and She the People. She also recently appeared <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/podcaster-new-politics-power-broker-harris-and-trump-know-it-2024-10">on the hit podcast "Call Her Daddy,"</a> which is extremely popular among Gen Z women.Harris can do something that Biden never could: convince Americans that she represents a break from the past. Biden, an 81-year-old white guy who has been in politics for half a century, was always going to have a difficult time making the case that he's an agent of change — especially among single women. Even if Harris has not diverged much from Biden on the issues, voters are more likely to believe she represents change. And for single women who increasingly believe the status quo is intolerable, the promise of a new direction voiced by a candidate who says she understands their struggles is a critical part of her appeal.For now, Republicans seem more intent on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-targets-young-men-theo-von-logan-paul-adin-ross-2024-8">appealing to young men</a> than to single women. The Trump campaign recently ran ads in key swing states criticizing Gov. Tim Walz, Harris' running mate, for raising taxes on Zyn, a tobacco-free nicotine pouch popular with young men. Another ad featured Jake Paul, a YouTuber who has a large following of young men, criticizing Harris. I imagine myself crying, but I also see a sense of closure and a cue to move on.It's the unanswered questions that keep me from fully healing. But I now must accept that some friendship breakups do not come with closure.I'm trying to turn this into a positive learning experience. I learned that I do not want to be like them. If I have a problem in the future, I will be transparent and discuss it with my friends — not just ghost them.It's up to me to stop the cycle because I have been on the other end. I know how it feels to be left alone to be fed to the wolves of my mind.
