The <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2016-05-18/earth-s-relentless-warming-just-hit-a-terrible-new-threshold">warming of the planet has been relentless</a>, according to scientific surveys.<p>Miserably hot summers are not the worst problem we face in the coming decades. Rising seas, an uptick in hurricanes and wildfires, and more invasive insects are already <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-climate-change-affects-your-state-2017-6">beginning to transform</a> the United States. </p><p><em>Ali Sundermier contributed to an earlier version of this post.</em></p>

The US will be unrecognizable by the end of this century

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>The Perseids are a meteor shower that occurs each year in late summer.</strong></li><li><strong>This year, the astronomical event peaks August 11-13.</strong></li><li><strong>A bright moon will make seeing the meteors more challenging, but NASA says stargazers can expect to see one every couple of minutes.</strong></li></ul><p>Right now Earth is plowing through a cloud of tiny bits of comet dust, turning the rice-grain-size debris into what many call shooting stars.</p><p>Known as the Perseid meteor shower, this recurring astronomical event is easily the most-watched - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stunning-perseid-meteor-shower-photos-from-around-the-world-2015-8">and beautiful</a> - shower of every year.</p><p>The Perseids in 2017 run from July 13 until August 26; they peak in the late evening and early morning hours of August 11, 12, and 13, according to <a href="http://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/everything-you-need-to-know-perseid-meteor-shower" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">EarthSky.org</a>.</p><p>Some websites have claimed that there will be more meteors visible per minute this year than any other time in nearly a century, but experts say this is hogwash.</p><p>"This year, we are expecting enhanced rates of about 150 per hour or so, but the increased number will be cancelled out by the bright Moon, the light of which will wash out the fainter Perseids," Bill Cooke, who leads NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, wrote in <a href="https://blogs.nasa.gov/Watch_the_Skies/2017/08/03/the-greatest-meteor-show-of-all-time/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">an August 3 blog post</a>. "A meteor every couple of minutes is good, and certainly worth going outside to look, but it is hardly the 'brightest shower in human history.'"</p><h2>How to watch</h2><p>This year's conditions will be challenging for two reasons.</p><p>First, there'll be a waning gibbous moon - the full moon will have just ended, but it will still be full and bright.</p><p>Second, the moon will rise in the evening and set near dawn. Normally the best time to watch for meteors is after the moon sets. TimeAndDate.com has a convenient <a href="https://www.timeanddate.com/moon/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">moonrise and moonset tool</a> you can use fo find out when that will happen in your location. In New York, for example, the moon will set around 6:44 a.m. EDT.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Given this year's conditions, the best time to head outside is between midnight and dawn. The closer to dawn the better - though twilight begins to eat up the dark sky a couple of hours before the sun rises.<p>You won't need any telescopes or fancy equipment to see the meteors - just clear skies, your eyes, and a bit of patience. Find a dark, remote spot away from the light pollution of nearby towns and cities, make yourself comfortable, and set aside a good chunk of time to enjoy the show.</p><p>"Give yourself at least an hour of viewing time for watching any meteor shower," <a href="http://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/everything-you-need-to-know-eta-aquarid-meteor-shower#when-how">EarthSky.org advises</a>. "Meteors tend to come in spurts that are interspersed by lulls. Also, it can take as long as 20 minutes for your eyes to adapt to the dark."</p><p>Perseids meteors are bright and fast, and they often leave persistent trains - the bright streaks that linger in the sky. They are best seen from the northern hemisphere. The meteors travel at the mind-numbing speed of 132,000 miles per hour - 500 times faster than the fastest car in the world.</p><h2>What causes a meteor shower?</h2><p>When a comet swings too close to the sun, the sun's light boils its icy surface, releasing particles of ice and dust.</p><p>This debris coming off the comet forms a tail that points away from the sun. As Earth crosses the orbit of this comet, we pass through the tail:</p><p><br>The gravity of our planet attracts the dust and ice that the comet has left in its wake. When that debris is pulled into our atmosphere, it rubs up against air molecules, causing it to burn up and streak through the sky.</br></p><p>That process results in the glowing trails of light that we see as meteors, or "shooting stars."</p><p>The comet producing the meteors in the Perseids is <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/multimedia/gallery/iss028e024847.html">Swift-Tuttle</a>, a 16-mile-wide hunk of space rock that takes 133 years to orbit the sun. It's the largest object in our solar system that makes <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-watch-the-persieds-august-meteor-shower-2015-8">repeated close approaches to Earth</a>.</p><p>The meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, but if you trace their paths back, they all appear to come from the same point, called the radiant. That's because the meteors are all approaching us at the same angle.</p><p>Meteor showers are all named after their radiant - the apparent point in the sky that the meteors come from. The most spectacular meteor shower of the year peaks this week - here's how to watch

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The "Nobel Prize of high school competitions" just got the most money it's ever received in its 95 years of existence from biopharmaceutical giant Regeneron.</p><p>On Thursday at the American Museum of Natural History, Regeneron made the largest single commitment the <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword> Talent Search (STS), the nation's oldest and most prestigious high school science competition, has ever received.</p><p>Oh, and Neil deGrasse Tyson was there too.</p><p>The unprecedented $100 million donation is estimated to last the next decade. This will not only double the amount of prize money given to students and schools, but will also be used to support new outreach and equity programs to reach more students across US, encouraging interest and participation in science, technology, engineering, and math research (STEM), Maya Adjmera, president and CEO of the Society for Science and the Public (SSP), told Business Insider.</p><p>The competition is the flagship program of the SSP, which promotes understanding and appreciation of science and the vital role it plays in human advancement.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Ali Sundermier</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>"The Science Talent Search is an incubator for some of world's greatest scientists, academics, entrepreneurs, and executives of innovative and leading companies," Adjmera said at a press conference on Thursday. "Among its alumni are 12 Nobel Laureates, five National Medal of Science winners, and an Oscar winner."</p><h2><strong>The real heroes</strong></h2><p>The STS has been changing the lives of high school students for nearly a century, enabling confidence, encouraging curiosity, and instilling sense of pride in being part of an important and impressive community, Adjmera said.</p><p>And the founders of Regeneron are a testament to that.</p><p>When George Yancopoulos, founding scientist and Chief Scientific Officer at Regeneron, was growing up, his heroes were famous ball players and he dreamed of becoming one. But that all changed when he started attending the Bronx High School of Science, where kids spoke in "hushed tones in the hallways about the real heroes" - students who had won what was then known as the Westinghouse Science Talent Search.</p><p>"Legend was that these kids were destined to change the world: Invent amazing things, cure disease," Yancopoulos said at the press conference. "That changed everything for me. I had new goals. I wanted to become one of these kids. I wanted to win a Westinghouse. I wanted to become a freaking scientist and I wanted to make a real difference in the world."</p><p>The press conference was speckled with STS alumni. Aside from Yancopoulos, who went on to become a finalist in the 1976 STS, Regeneron's President and CEO, Len Schleifer, who also founded the company was a semifinalist in 1970 and Adjmera was a finalist in 1985.</p><p>Although Tyson, who was Yancopoulos' friend and classmate at the Bronx High School of Science, was quick to point out that he was not a winner or semifinalist in the competition (in fact he didn't even enter), knowing other students who were was a point of pride for him.</p><p>"The knowledge that they were doing this created a landscape of learning, an atmosphere of discovery," Tyson said.</p><p>With this new money, Regeneron and the Society hope to expand the reach of their competition so that it doesn't only focus on prestigious schools. They will support teachers, research labs, and grant programs, making sure to allow other schools to access to opportunities that hadn't been there before.</p><p>"Right now the competition is dominated by the best, elite high schools," Yancopoulos told Business Insider. "But all it takes is a couple of dedicated teachers with a little support and guidance to run important research programs that can produce winners in this competition and more importantly kids who are going to go on to become scientists and change the world."</p><p>Science has fallen off as one of the top destinations for talents, Yancopoulos said. Through programs like the Science Talent Search, the Society and Regeneron hope to get the nation back on track with science.</p><p>"Over last few decades society has gotten confused about who the real heroes are," Yancopoulos said. "Just like many of you out here I got hooked on reality shows like 'American Idol' and 'So You Think You Can Dance.' But the reality show we should care about the most is the Science Talent Search.
