Prior to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/github-actions-microsoft-cicd-atlassian-circleci-gitlab-2019-8">Atlassian</a>, Toole had spent over 13 years at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/adobe-analytics-technology-previews-ai-2019-6">Adobe</a> and also six years at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-for-startups-azure-customers-2019-10">Microsoft</a>. At those companies, he enjoyed building organizations and teams from the ground up. He wanted to continue doing that, but at a smaller scale, so he took a job at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-tech-companies-like-atlassian-microsoft-do-developer-interviews-2019-5">Atlassian</a> and relocated to Australia. </p><p>But after over a year there, he hoped to move back to Seattle with his family and work somewhere smaller. </p><p>"This is really a continuation of that trajectory," Toole said. "I knew that was the direction I wanted to go. What I wanted was not quite there. I had undershot in how early stage in development I wanted to be at. I'm excited to be at a company that's right at that stage."</p><p>On Thursday, the startup Algorithmia, which creates artificial intelligence products and algorithms for companies to use, announced that Toole joined as its vice president of platform engineering. </p><p>"What I really like is that it's a low-ego but high-energy kind of environment," Toole said. "There's a lot of clarity around what the company is trying to accomplish and a huge focus on making our customers successful. He plans to bring this to Algorithmia as well.</p><p>"I was very much involved in the early process of how do we build the solutions necessary at a fairly large scale," Toole said. Atlassian's former engineering head explains why he left his post to join the AI startup Algorithmia

<keyword id="3744596" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="algorithmia">Algorithmia</keyword> is what Diego Oppenheimer (Founder and CEO) calls an open marketplace for algorithms—code that companies and developers can use to bulk up their sites and apps—and this marketplace now incorporates deep learning algorithms that handle undertakings like face recognition and character recognition.<br />

Algorithmia utilizes the same marketplace model that startups have applied to such a variety of different products and ventures, including everything from graphic design to real estate and ecommerce. In recent time, Google and Facebook have snapped up such a large number of researchers at the heart of the deep learning movement, an AI movement that is quickly reinventing everything from speech recognition to security. Along these lines, Musk and Altman snatched a few top AI researchers from Google and Facebook and promised to share their work with the world on stage .<br />

“Algorithmia was born in 2013 with the goal of advancing the art of algorithm development, discovery and use. The gamut of AI democratisation includes data, algorithms (pre-trained models), data computing and storage, and the marketplace.<br /><br />Data: It is the raw input for ML from which insights are generated, decisions made, and outcomes predicted. This level is easy to democratise, enables basic analysis of datasets and also helps in training AI models quickly.<br /><br />Algorithms: At this level, data gets engaged. Democratising algorithms, though more complex than data democratisation, is still easy. However, it needs a basic understanding of computer science, statistics, and mathematics to make sense of the algorithm. Platforms like GitHub and Hugging Face boast of hundreds of AI code repositories and pre-trained models which provide a jumpstart and overall acceleration to the AI journey.<br /><br />Data Computing and Storage: At this point, democratisation starts to become more complicated. With major AI/ML providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Compute Platform, Microsoft Azure, and IBM Cloud, transitioning to cloud-based platforms, access to essential hardware components like central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) has been simplified. Additionally, advanced storage solutions like Google Cloud Storage and Amazon S3 facilitate easy and secure data storage and management.<br /><br />Marketplace: The democratisation of the marketplace is still in its early stages, indicating untapped opportunities awaiting exploration. Platforms such as Hugging Face Leaderboard, Kaggle, Algorithmia, and AI Hub are thriving AI communities of ML practitioners. These communities regularly conduct open challenges that promote the creation and enhancement of Large Language Models (LLMs).<br /><br />Much like the printing press democratised information and the internet democratised knowledge – AI and Generative AI, representing the present and future of technology, are on this path now. The full potential of AI is yet to be realised and democratising it is the path forward to unlocking its true capabilities. AI for all: The power and potential of democratising artificial intelligence

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>A new website called <a href="http://www.isitnude.com">IsItNude.com</a> does exactly what you'd guess based on the name: Pop in a picture, and it'll tell you if the photo's subject is naked. </p><p>It sounds like a joke, but it was created by a company called Algorithmia to demonstrate how complicated math and photo detection techniques can automatically filter out images that are not okay to post on more family-friendly websites. </p><p>Basically, Algorithmia <a href="http://blog.algorithmia.com/post/121967357859/isitnude">writes in a blog entry</a>, IsItNude.com scans for faces, and tries to match the skin tone of a subject's nose to any other portion of a picture. That person would then have to meticulously paint over each detail of the image, taking hours to return each to a best approximation of its original color.</p><p>But it's a brave new world out there folks. There's a computer algorithm, free to use on the internet, that can colorize your photos in seconds. It is, according to its creators, the product of machine learning algorithm, though they don't offer a tremendous amount of detail as to how it works.</p><p>We first spotted it in an <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2016/7/18/12216406/colorize-black-and-white-photos-algorithmia-tool-image-editing">article</a> by Chris Plante at The Verge. He used the Algorithmia Colorize Photos software to colorize images from "The Wizard of Oz." I have a whole bunch of old black-and-white JPEGs laying around, and decided to try it on them.</p><p>The tool seems to work best when it can clearly distinguish earthy objects, people, and sky. This is the most amazing new tool for editing your old, black-and-white photos

<p class="source"><span>Warner Bros. Pictures</span></p><p class="caption">Can you believe "AI Artificial Intelligence" came out 16 years ago? That was a good movie.</p>Google on Tuesday <a href="https://www.blog.google/topics/machine-learning/introducing-gradient-ventures/">announced</a> a new venture fund called Gradient Ventures, which aims to mentor and develop early-stage startups focused on artificial intelligence.<p>Gradient Ventures will be overseen by Anna Patterson, who has worked within many branches of Google but most recently served as the company's VP of engineering in artificial intelligence, helping integrate AI into Google's various products.</p><p>Google didn't specify the size of the fund, or the amount of money it intends to invest in startups, though it noted that the fund would focus on "early stage" startups, suggesting that investments will be relatively modest. Google said it would take minority stakes in the companies it backed.</p><p>AI has become one of the most valuable building-blocks for tech companies creating new generations of products such as virtual assistants and self-driving cars. Google, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft are all staffing up on AI experts and acquiring companies.</p><p>Google's new AI fund will also be led by Google engineering director Ankit Jain and Shabih Rizvi from Kleiner Perkins. Google launched an in-house AI fund to help startups turn sci-fi into 'nonfiction'

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Trump attends the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>President Donald Trump's legal team says an in-person interview between the president and special counsel Robert Mueller in the Russia investigation would set a bad precedent for future presidents, and would be a waste of time.</strong></li><li><strong>Trump's team has been stonewalling Mueller for months, and it looks like the standoff will continue.</strong></li><li><strong>Experts say that while Trump should be worried about a Mueller interview, his legal team arguing that it would set a bad precedent is a dramatic overstatement.</strong></li></ul><p><br />After months of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-lawyer-strategy-to-block-mueller-interview-2018-1">finding ways</a> to skirt around the issue, President Donald Trump's legal team has come up with yet another strategy for avoiding an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller in the Russia investigation.</p><p>While maintaining that all options for a Trump-Mueller interview remain on the table, one of Trump's lawyers has claimed that a face-to-face interview would set a bad precedent for future investigations.</p><p>"It would be a travesty to waste [Trump's] time and to set a precedent which would cripple a future president," the unnamed lawyer told <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/white-house-legal-team-considers-ways-trump-could-testify-before-mueller-1519560120">The Wall Street Journal</a> on Sunday.</p><p>Mueller is investigating potential cooperation between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russia, including whether the president obstructed justice by, among other things, firing former FBI Director James Comey in May.</p><p>The lawyer also claimed that a face-to-face interview would be unnecessary given the volume of information Mueller's team already has access to.</p><p>The lawyer said Mueller "has all of the notes and memos of the thoughts and actions of this president on all subjects he requested in real time without reservation or qualification, including testimony from his most intimate staff and eight lawyers from the White House Counsel's Office."</p><p>"Any question for the president is answered in these materials and testimony," the lawyer continued.</p><p><span>Instead of a full in-person interview, Trump's team has also floated written responses to interviewers' questions, along with partial face-to-face responses.</span></p><h2>The bigger picture</h2><p>Yale Law School professor Cristina Rodríguez, who specializes in administrative and constitutional law, said the unnamed lawyer's statement about Trump's testimony was not entirely accurate.</p><p>"That seems like a dramatic overstatement to me," she told Business Insider. "Future presidents could ignore what President Donald Trump would do. Sitting down might create a convention where presidents would cooperate with an investigation, but at this point it's very speculative."</p><p>But Rodríguez did acknowledge that sitting down with Mueller would present an awkward situation for Trump.</p><p>"The special counsel is a subordinate to the president," she said. "This is just an ordinary special counsel under the office of the Justice Department's regulations, so it's an ordinary prosecutor. What's awkward about it is that it would be an adversarial meeting to some degree. And Mueller would probably ask questions that the president would perceive as threatening, so this does present concerns for the chief executive."</p><p>Rodríguez said that while independent counsels did interview former President Bill Clinton in <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB953243986346425088?mod=searchresults&amp;page=10&amp;pos=49">the Whitewater investigation</a>, these investigators were protected from removal by Congress.
