<ul><li>Jamtara scammers are using the lockdown to scam people with the promise of <keyword id="6359858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="alcohol">alcohol</keyword> <keyword id="40978" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="home-delivery">home delivery</keyword>.</li><li>As shelves at home run dry, people are looking to Google for their liquor needs only to get duped.</li><li>The scammers ask for advance payments, bank details and even offer ‘happy hour’ deals — only to leave you disappointed at the end of the day.</li></ul>If you’re looking to buy liquor during the lockdown — beware. It can understandably get boring as you sit at home and worry about how the coronavirus pandemic is going to play out. But trying to stock up on more alcohol may only add to your anxiety. If you have to place an order, make sure you’re only calling up a known contact and avoid making a payment in advance. Because, Jamtara scammers are making a comeback. The Jamtara scammers Jamtara, a small village in the state of Jharkhand is known for being the cybercrime hub in India. During the lockdown, shopping might have taken a hit, but cybercriminals found a new way to dupe bank account holders — this time scamming people looking to buy liquor during lockdown. Ordinarily, if a person is stuck at home and they’re looking to score some alcohol, their first instinct will be to a quick Google Search on liquor shops located close home. Most listings come with an accompanying number than you can call to check if the shop will deliver. However, there’s no way to easily verify if the listed number is genuine — or just somebody posing as the shop owner but located in some other part of the country. In the melee, anyone who’s desperate enough to transfer money in advance may end up losing a lot more than just the cost of alcohol. How does the liquor scam work? Let’s say you find a phone number on Google for the nearest liquor shop. You call them, and they say that they would be more than happy to deliver — provided you can make the payment beforehand. You’ll wait around for two or three hours before calling them to ask why your delivery hasn’t arrived yet. The people on the other end will likely say that they haven’t received the payment yet. However, if you share your bank details — they may be able to verify the transaction on their system. If you do share those details, the so-called ‘liquor shop’ will call you back in another 30 minutes to let you know that your payment has come through. But, that’s not where the scam ends. Since they have your confidential details at hand, they need your OTP to siphon off more money so they’ll try and lure you in with a ‘happy hour’ deal. In order to avail of the scheme, you have to just forward the OTP SMS that you get from your bank so that they can push the payment from their end. Within a few minutes, a large sum of money is likely to disappear from your account. You can call as many times as you would like, no-one will pick up the phone now. And, there won’t be any alcohol around to drown your sorrows in. How can you protect yourself from Jamtara scammers and their alcohol scheme? It’s obviously better if you have the number of your wine and beer shop beforehand. If you don’t, it’s probably better to forego the idea of buying alcohol — especially since it’s illegal to be supplying liquor during the lockdown anyway. If you do end up calling a number that’s promising the delivery of alcohol, choose to call a landline if the option is available. And, tell them that you will authorise the payment once the delivery is at your doorstep. Assuming you’re rich enough and a bottle of alcohol isn’t going to eat into your budget, you may be coerced into making the payment. But if the delivery still doesn’t show up, under no circumstances should you be sharing your bank details — with anyone. Not your debit card details, savings account details — and especially not your one-time-password (OTP). OTP is a secondary layer of protection, put in place specifically for the bank to ensure that you are the one authorising any payment that is going out of your account. If you share that OTP and someone else uses it for a transaction, the bank is going to assume that it’s still you making the payment at the end of the day. It’s a form of identity theft and you’ll have nobody to blame but yourself. Excise departments and cybercrime cells are already dealing with a variety of complaints with scammers using the names of well-known liquor shops to snatch money from accounts. In Kolkata, the cybersecurity wing of the police has received five complaints so far. The startup said that it will invest $500,000 (₹38 million) on its stores in the post-Coronavirus world. “Given how COVID-19 has virtually changed everyone’s behaviour and lifestyle, we want to assure customers of their safety and of our employees so that they feel confident while shopping,” said <keyword id="8080157" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lokendra-Ranawat">Lokendra Ranawat</keyword>, WoodenStreet’s CEO. This includes virtual contact-less services, virtual reality walkthroughs of a customer’s home via smartphones, sanitization of all its furniture stores and increased use of digital payment methods. “Implementation of virtual store tools and VR modules will reduce person-to-person interaction. Customers can experience virtual store walkthroughs or products from within their homes,” Ranawat said. To regulate supply chains, it will train the artisans and delivery teams as per the sanitization standards — including disinfection of manufacturing facilities, warehouses and delivery vehicles, temperature screenings, touch-free delivery. It’s been a month since the startup closed store operations due to the nationwide lockdown. This furniture startup is investing half a million dollars on virtual reality and contactless shopping in a post-Coronavirus world

New Delhi, Jun 15 () The CBI has alerted the police and other law-enforcement agencies across the country about an Interpol input warning about racketeers selling fake hand sanitisers and scamming people by posing as suppliers of PPE and other COVID-19-related medical items, officials said on Monday. Once the Interpol passed on the information, the National Central Bureau of India, tasked to coordinate with the international body, immediately alerted the police authorities to remain vigilant about gangs using the modus operandi to make quick money, the officials said. With the coronavirus pandemic gripping the globe bringing the world economy to a grinding halt, several organised criminal groups have mushroomed internationally to make money using illicit activities from banking viruses to ransomware and cheating as representatives of COVID-19 protection gear, they said. The Lyon-headquartered global police cooperation agency in its latest input has alerted its member countries about gangs selling fake hand sanitisers using Methanol, a cheap and toxic alcohol, and online advance payment scam perpetrated by conmen posing as representatives of protective gear manufacturers, they said. Instances have been reported from other countries of use of spurious hand sanitiser during the COVID-19 pandemic, they added. "Methanol can be highly toxic and dangerous for the human body," an official said. In a communication to Interpol Liaison Officers (ILOs) of all states and UTs, the CBI has said that some criminals are approaching hospitals and health authorities posing as representatives of manufacturers of PPE kits and other COVID-19-related protective gear. Exploiting the shortage of such articles, they take online advance payments from authorities and hospitals but after the receipt of payments, no deliveries are made. The ILOs are officers deputed in every state police organisation to coordinate with the CBI over matters related to Interpol. Earlier, the Interpol had alerted about banking trojan camouflaged as information material on the pandemic situation, cybercriminals using ransomware to target hospitals and fake testing kits being in circulation for COVID-19 and international narco-traffickers using medical kits to smuggle drugs. The Drive-Thru: Inside Amazon's delivery plans, McDonald's takes the Chicken McGriddle national, and a tiny IHOP serves tiny pancakes

Around 40 per cent of Indians surveyed have been defrauded when shopping online during the festive season, finds a study. The study was conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of <keyword id="179697" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="norton" source="Orion">Norton</keyword>, a global leader in Cyber safety, which released the Indian findings that explored attitudes toward cyber security and online shopping during the festive season. According to the findings, two-thirds of Indian adults surveyed were concerned about their personal details being compromised (78 per cent), being defrauded by a third-party retailer (77 per cent), buying or receiving a refurbished device as a gift (72 per cent), and a device they receive as a gift being hacked (69 per cent). "Recently, there has been an increase in the number of online shoppers, and with that the rise in online shopping scams, gift card frauds, postal delivery frauds," said <keyword id="2022067" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ritesh-chopra" source="Orion">Ritesh Chopra</keyword>, Norton Director India and <keyword id="497507" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="saarc-countries" source="Orion">SAARC Countries</keyword> at NortonLifeLock. About 78 per cent of Indian adults surveyed agree that spending time online via their connected devices helps them feel more connected during the festive season, and 74 per cent say that it helps their mental well-being. Sixty-five per cent of Indian adults say their mental well-being would suffer if they could not access their connected devices during the festive season, the report mentioned. "Our Norton report also suggests that many Indian adults have been defrauded while doing online shopping, the average loss of those surveyed is Rs 6,216," he added. As the supply chain is affected by the district lockdown and fewer labour in place, e-commerce platforms are too banking on kiranas for efficient delivery of essentials. And this has resulted in a line-up of startups and big corporates all turning to the kirana waala dukaan with offers, new products and more. ‘Kirana stores have become India’s lifeline’ Amazon India launched ‘Local Shops on Amazon’. The program helps customers discover products from local shops in their city from the convenience of their homes, while helping shopkeepers supplement their footfalls with a digital presence and expand beyond their normal catchment, said the company. Amazon had piloted this program for 6 months with over 5000 local shops and retailers from 100+ cities across India. India is home to a vast number of B2B startups who have been working with mom n pop stores. MaxWholesale, a B2B e-commerce platform for kirana stores to source online inventory, raked in sales worth over ₹1 crore in a single day. “During such unprecedented times, kiranas have become the lifeline for the country. We have ensured that our on-ground staff and our suppliers get the best of our capabilities. The confidence that the suppliers and retailers have bestowed upon us has made us achieve this feat. We are committed to make kirana stores comfortable with technology by solving their core problem of dependable supply,” said Samarth Agrawal, Founder &amp; CEO, MaxWholesale. With kirana stores becoming the centrepoint for essentials, startups also figured out the need to start listing them online for faster delivery and efficiency. Phonepe introduced a new feature ‘stores’ with a list of kirana stores near you, and you can place your order and pay through the app for a contactless delivery. Meanwhile, startups like GoFrugal and LoveLocal started offering free applications to kirana shops to help them take their business online and serve more customers. Nearly 80,000 LoveLocal shops are serving over 10 million consumers across India with no touch delivery and no touch shop pickup. "These are difficult times. The big game – JioMart and its O2O model Big guns are gunning for kirana business too. Paytm Mall, which began operations in February 2017, went through a series of ups and downs. This was until in 2019 when it switched to an O2O model led business. Now, Paytm Mall drives its online traffic to offline stores through gift vouchers, offers and uses offline strength to push online traffic through digital payments only. And now the big player Reliance Retail too wants a piece of the pie. Jio’s e-commerce entity JioMart has also taken to the hybrid model. Facilitating this offline-to-online model, in December 2019, Reliance acquired 85% stake in the Hyderabad-based startup Nowfloats for ₹141.63 crore. Nowfloats offers SaaS-based solutions to SMEs, and enables their digital presence. In August 2019, Reliance acquired a majority stake in the Google-backed fashion e-commerce startup Fynd. In March 2019, Reliance acquired Mumbai-based logistics platform Grab A Grub. Reliance Jio’s latest deal with Facebook is another such move in the same direction. One of the significant factors of the deal is that Reliance Retail and WhatsApp are now in a commercial partnership to accelerate the Indian giant’s e-commerce venture – JioMart. Through JioMart and WhatsApp, the entities will now help support consumer businesses. “The companies will work closely to ensure that consumers are able to access the nearest kiranas who can provide products and services to their homes by transacting seamlessly with JioMart using WhatsApp,” Reliance said in a statement. From Reliance’s JioMart to Amazon and startups all line up to serve kiranas – India’s mom n pop stores

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword> rose to popularity during the pandemic, launching influencers and brands into the spotlight.</li><li>It also allowed small businesses to grow their brand at an unprecedented pace with viral videos.</li><li>Insider spoke with four businesses about the benefits, and drawbacks, of unexpected viral fame.</li></ul>When Jeremy Kim and John Dalsey started their hard-seltzer company, <a href="https://nectarhardseltzer.com/">Nectar</a>, late last year, they went door to door to 200 stores in Los Angeles looking for someone to carry their product. "We would go to these stores, drop off samples, and then, you know, I'd be excited because we're getting all this positive feedback from our friends and family and their friends - these store owners are probably going to have the same reaction," Kim told Insider. "Nobody would give us a call back."Kim said the constant rejection made him and his partner nervous that they had missed their window of opportunity by selling the summer beverage in late fall. That's when they decided to hop on <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@nectarhardseltzer?lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1ebapp=v1">TikTok</a>, which was surging in popularity amid the pandemic."First I put together a video, basically just chronicling our journey of how we got our first box and just to see whether or not anybody would be interested in the drink," Kim said, noting that he added a phone number that viewers could text to show interest."I posted the video in early November and it did OK, got like 30,000 views, and we're, like, 'Right, you know, a hundred more of these videos and we'll be the biggest brand ever.'"The video showed Nectar in production - the cans of hard seltzer being filled, sealed, and boxed - superimposed with captions detailing the time it took to bring the product to fruition. Kim said they put a lot of effort into their videos regardless of whether they go viral: "Shooters keep shooting." A few weeks later, on Black Friday, Kim said that he got a notification that TikTok took down their biggest video for breaking <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/community-guidelines?lang=en">community guidelines</a>. A spokesperson for TikTok told Insider that Nectar's video was flagged by the <keyword id="6519448" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="algorithm">algorithm</keyword> for sharing personally identifiable information by adding the phone number in the caption."I quickly reposted it, and I texted everybody in our group chat, 'Dude, they took down our biggest video,"' he said, adding he was "freaked out" by the move.Much to his surprise, the views on the reposted video grew tenfold. Three days later, Kim said the video had more than 300,000 views, and "hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people across the entire United States" texted the phone number to express interest. As of Thursday, the video had 415,000 views.<div type="image" title="Nectar Hard Seltzer" height="1125" width="1500" msid="84690162" hostid="261"></div>The duo took the videos and hundreds of phone numbers to two mom-and-pop liquor stores in Los Angeles. They put 150 boxes on the shelves at each location and sent out a text to those who texted the phone number from their viral video to let them know that the seltzer was available for the first time to customers.When they arrived at the stores the next morning, Kim said it was "pandemonium," and Nectar sold out in under an hour. "I will always remember this day for the rest of my life," he said. Since then, the popularity has only grown, with other viral videos gaining 500,000 views each. The company's TikTok had 39,000 followers in seven months. Nectar ended up hosting more pop-up events and gaining more traction on TikTok before eventually distributing their product with alcohol retailer BevMo and delivery startup GoPuff, which acquired BevMo in November of last year.The company also made it known to their followers that they would take their product to any city that gets 300 people to text the company phone number and recently sold more than 300 boxes of Nectar in Seattle."Seven months ago, we had zero customers and followers," Kim said. "Today we are in 100 stores self-distributed across California. We ship direct across the entire state of New York. We did this with no distributor, no publicist, no marketing budget."Nectar wasn't the only <keyword id="6359222" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Small-Business">small business</keyword> that leveraged the growing popularity of Tiktok and the platform's algorithm to launch their success. The popular video-based app has joined the ranks of other social-media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to help businesses build their brand and get their name out there.<h2 style="text-align: center;">Digital marketing isn't new, but TikTok's been a game-changer for small businesses</h2>Analiese Ross, the CEO and cofounder of AMR Digital Marketing, said using <keyword id="6354632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="social-media">social media</keyword> as a marketing tool "can really level the playing field for all the businesses, specifically all different sizes and income levels.""You see like the big players on there - Nike, Coca-Cola - and then you see small businesses that have a fraction of the budget, but are actually doing way better on social," Ross said. "And that's like one of the very, I think, unique things about [digital marketing]. That really doesn't happen in any other area of marketing."But what sets TikTok apart from social platforms like Instagram and Facebook, however, is the video app's unique ability to make videos go viral. Ross said the biggest draw to TikTok are the fluctuations in video traffic, even if you have a smaller base of followers."You're not going to see those big fluctuations on Instagram where, like, one post gets a million views and the other gets 200," she said. "That ability to go super-viral and not have it be dependent on your follower count is very unique to TikTok, and it provides, I think, a huge opportunity for a small business who doesn't have a ton of followers, who doesn't have all those resources."Small businesses can use TikTok's interest-based algorithm to get their product in front of the right demographic, Ross said. Whether it is viewers who are looking to buy a specific item or are simply coming across merchandise representing their existing obsessions, the algorithm identifies the viewers' interests and puts specific videos into their <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> feed, known as a "For You Page.""I mean, you can have 200 followers on TikTok and have a video go viral, and it gets a million views and it completely changes everything for you," Ross added.<div type="image" title="TikTok" height="2128" width="4256" msid="84690165" hostid="261"></div>"It's really all about showing people what they want to see," she said. "So Instagram is all about connecting you with your friends, with people that you know, and you have to be able to find those people and follow them ... "We had a few ideas, like, 'Oh, maybe the customer could create their idea,' or 'Oh, maybe we could design something,' and then, sure enough, it just came to this idea," Rankin said. "Our interpretation is going to be put down on what the customer wants onto a shirt, and we're going to keep it as a surprise until the customer gets it.""This is a market that we don't really think exists quite yet," he added.Prompts from customers could range anywhere from designs featuring their favorite musicians and pop-culture fandom to suggestions such as "I like hedgehogs, but I also have borderline personality disorder."Their business concept lends itself to social media: Their product is the result of a conversation with consumers. While they do have 27,000 followers on Instagram - where some customers can post their order on their Story - and an even smaller audience on Twitter, Rankin said their TikTok account, which has 230,000 followers, reaches the most people, especially with the potential of their customers' videos going viral alongside their own.The next logical step after giving customers a surprise design on a T-shirt was getting the reaction, which customers are asked to post on TikTok with the hashtag #niceshirtthanks. The hashtag has nearly 50 million views. Rankin said they noticed their growing popularity early, prompting them to caps the number of shirts they could sell in one day. "Because of the nature of the business - each shirt is individualized - we can't mass-produce a ton of one design," he said. "We found that we're going to have to limit the number of orders because we don't know how many we can produce quite yet."He added that as the company grows, the pair hopes to increase the number of allowed sales and continue working full time on expanding the brand and the appeal of comedic apparel.<h2 style="text-align: center;">Going viral on TikTok persuaded some small business owners to turn their side gig into a full-time venture</h2>Like Nice Shirt. Thanks!, TikTok fame convinced another small-business owner to invest in their business full time. Alyssa Brianna started her business, Fabulyss, last July selling self-defense key chains and jewelry. Brianna, a 22-year-old recent college graduate, said she made herself a key chain after she was harassed on campus and later decided to sell self-defense products.Brianna said she initially intended on casually running the business on the side until graduation, and she said she was only advertising products on Instagram, which mainly friends and family followed. About a month into creating Fabulyss, she decided to make <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@fabulyssboutique?lang=en">TikTok videos</a> for fun."And then one day, one of my TikTok videos blew up, got millions of views," Brianna, who has 1.3 million followers on TikTok, said. "And ever since then, I've been selling out consistently since November because of TikTok." Brianna has since expanded her business to an office space in February and has two family members working for her. She said she hopes to get a warehouse for her products within the next year and do pop-up shops to meet her customers in person - a vision that would not have been made possible if she had not gone viral on TikTok."Because of, like, the algorithm, it changed my entire future. I actually didn't want this as a full-time thing," Brianna said. "I thought once I graduate, I'll just stop it, but it showed me that I can just be my own boss and do what I want."She added: "So if it wasn't for TikTok, I would just be working a regular 9-to-5 job like everybody else does, but instead I get to do what I want and on my own time."<h2 style="text-align: center;">Going viral can put big pressure on a small business</h2>Having their businesses go viral can be a welcome surprise for entrepreneurs looking to build their customer base, but it doesn't come without drawbacks. For Clariz Marielle, who owns a custom pet-jewelry business, Woof Palace, millions of views generated a lot of sales, as well as a lot of pressure.Marielle receives photos of her customers' pets to turn into line-art drawings she designs herself. From there, the designs are engraved onto jewelry pendants to create personalized accessories for her customers, a process that takes a few weeks. Marielle posts videos of her design process on her business' TikTok account, which has nearly 412,000 followers.In one of her <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@woofpalace/video/6921447780846259461?lang=de-DE&amp;is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1ebapp=v1">first viral videos</a>, which has 9 million views, she talked about a customer stealing from her business by complaining about the necklace and refusing to return the product after Marielle granted her a refund. "It generated a lot of sales that I couldn't really handle," Marielle said. "I mean, I didn't think about stopping my store. So I just took all of the orders, thinking that I could draw everything in one week and then ship them out the next week, but that wasn't humanly possible."Though Marielle scrambled to keep up with the new demand as a result of her viral videos, she said her customers started to complain and send angry messages, and some even posted publicly accusing her of scamming them. Ali Mirza, a digital-marketing strategist and founder of #iSocialYou, said he has seen small-business owners and entrepreneurs getting overwhelmed by a lot of sudden attention from social media. Mirza told Insider that businesses can safeguard themselves from those situations by setting the right expectation and capturing customers' contact information to notify them of a restock if they order when inventory is sold out.He also advised owners and entrepreneurs that find themselves in that situation to remember that social media is "just one piece of your whole business. It's not the business.""My perspective is, we want to use social media to build our business - we don't want to be used by social media," Mirza said. "I want to use social media to bring traffic to me, but then I have other aspects of my business to really capture that traffic and use it to my benefit."Since going viral, Marielle said she brought on her friend to help with customer service and her uncle to help with the pet pendant engravings, and she said the positive reactions from her customers receiving such a personal product gives her "so much drive to wake up every day and do something for my small business.""Seeing the reactions of my customers made me feel so happy and content inside because, you know, I feel like I created that," Marielle said. "I drew their dog, and seeing them really happy and just cherish the jewelry is really what motivated me to keep going and do it every day. And ever since I think I didn't have a free day for like six months, and it was so much fun."

Credit rating agency CARE ratings has given the retail sector in India a ‘Negative’ outlook. “The impact on demand, which is expected to remain muted at least for the next three or four quarters, will be more in case of players with presence in non-essential items and luxury segments,” said the ratings agency in its report. However, it believes grocery will prevail as king. “The retailers with presence in essential commodities continue to have some cash flows to support their fixed costs,” said the report. Low consumer spending even after lockdown Because of the coronavirus pandemic, stock markets across the world have crashed, oil prices have seen a record low, and organizations across the world are taking cost cutting measures. So, as the global economy worsens even after the lockdown lifts, consumers are going to be cautious about their spending.In lieu of a global recession, people aren’t going to loosen their purse strings. “After the control of the spread of the coronavirus and post the lock-down period, the spending as well as shopping patterns of the consumers are expected to change significantly. The consumers are likely to curtail their discretionary spending with reduced income in their hands as well as tendency to preserve cash,” said the CARE report.
