And with lots of drinks can come rowdiness. </p><p>I've come across a few troublemakers who had no idea that smashing Champagne glasses in the hot tub could get you booted off the ship.</p><p>Every passenger consents to a hefty conduct policy when they book the cruise, so make sure to read through it to know what's prohibited on board.</p><h2><strong>Make sure to put your phone on airplane mode to avoid expensive roaming charges</strong></h2><p>Cellular rates at sea can sneak up on you, and you can easily rack up a $500 roaming bill. </p><p>Even if you're not actively on your phone, most are still using data, so make sure to put yours <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/surprising-secrets-about-flying-2018-7">on airplane mode</a> to avoid roaming charges.</p><p>Really, just turn your phone off unless you're using it to take photos or access the ship's WiFi.</p><h2><strong>Many passengers don't take advantage of the different dining options on board</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="a wooden, circular table full of food with the ocean in the background" height="2652" width="3536" msid="110801689" hostid="261" sizebytes="482028"></div><p>I often see passengers eat all three meals at the buffet every day. Yes, this means a sit-down meal where you can order seven appetizers, five entrées, and 12 extra cookies for a midnight snack.</p><p>There are also so many spots with free food around most ships, like a pizza station, 24-hour ice-cream machine, and small cafés. Just be aware that specialty dining, like the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/steak-around-the-world-2018-11">steak house</a>, might cost extra.</p><h2><strong>Leaving your room key behind is more of a hassle than you'd expect</strong></h2><p>It is not just a room key — it's your onboard credit card, ticket on and off the ship, and identification for the week.</p><p>Everything is connected to that card, so make sure to set up your information online ahead of time so you can start swiping the moment you get on board.</p><p>Security will scan it when you pass through the gangway to know who is on or off the ship, so it's especially important to have it on port days.</p><p>If you lose it, report it to the service desk immediately to ensure that no one else spends your money.</p><h2><strong>Many guests don't know they can bring their own wine on the ship</strong></h2><p>While many people think no outside alcohol is permitted on the ship, many major cruise lines allow passengers over the age of 21 to bring a bottle or two of wine on boarding day, so you can stop smuggling drinks in empty mouthwash bottles.</p><p>Some terminals will even sell wine to boarding travelers. It is essential to their jobs and affects their livelihoods.</p><p>I'd recommend waiting until the end of the cruise to make sure you're happy with the service instead of removing it on day one. You can also increase or decrease the amount instead of cutting it. </p><h2><strong>Packing prohibited items can lead to a headache</strong></h2><p>As confident as you are that you can sneak on your portable iron, I seriously advise against packing anything that's not allowed on board. </p><p>Security scans your bags on embarkation day, and if a prohibited item — like an iron, a bottle of vodka, or a candle — is found, they will hold your bag.</p><p>Your luggage won't be delivered to your door, and you may have to wait several hours until security contacts you, brings you to the holding area to search the bag, and confiscates the item until the end of the cruise.</p><h2><strong>Prepare your necessary travel documents to avoid trouble at ports</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="a view of mountains and water off the front of a ship" height="2274" width="3024" msid="110801692" hostid="261" sizebytes="443082"></div><p>Cruise ships travel all over the world, so check if you need specific visas or documents based on your nationality.</p><p>You are responsible for knowing and bringing your own paperwork. If you don't have the right documents, you might not be able to get off at a port or, even worse, be allowed back on the ship.</p><p>I saw this happen when traveling to India with many American guests, a handful of whom didn't realize they needed a visa.</p><h2><strong>Dressing down on formal night can limit your dining options</strong></h2><p>Even though walking through the promenade in shorts is your choice, many guests aren't aware that there's usually a formal evening on most cruises.</p><p>Most passengers don <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/julia-roberts-fashion-evolution-2018-10">evening gowns</a> and suits on formal nights, and I've met cruisers who wished they would've packed at least one nice item — besides their Margaritaville shirt, of course.</p><p>Passengers not formally dressed on this evening usually aren't allowed to eat in the ship's main dining rooms, though the buffet is open to everyone.</p><h2><strong>It's worth learning the difference between port and starboard</strong></h2><p>Different announcements will direct passengers to either the port side or starboard side of the ship, so it's best to brush up on the jargon before your vacation.</p><p>Port is the left side of the boat and starboard is the right, always configured facing the front of the ship.</p><p>Just remember that "port" and "left" are both four letters. The most common causes include: </p><ul><li><strong>Poor dental hygiene: </strong>If you don't brush or floss daily, not only do you miss getting rid of food particles in between your teeth, you risk plaque buildup, the sticky film of bacteria that coats your teeth. This bacteria can lead to bad breath, as well as cavities and gum disease.</li><li><strong>Foods:</strong> Any food that collects on and between teeth can be the culprit of bad breath, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/health-benefits-of-garlic" target="_blank" rel="noopener">garlic</a> and onions can especially produce foul odors. </li><li><strong>Dry mouth: </strong>Saliva helps keep odors at bay naturally by killing bacteria and neutralizing the acids produced by plaque. It's best to use purified, filtered, or distilled water because tap water may have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/signs-tap-water-contaminated-unsafe-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">contaminants</a>. I also got the Sandy Drink cocktail ($8) and Thai tea ($5). I found <a href="https://www.insider.com/hiking-trails-worth-traveling-for-2018-3">hiking boots</a> that fit me perfectly. The verdict was fish tacos from <a href="https://www.muchasgraciasmexicanfood.com/locations/oregon/portland-oregon/">Muchas Gracias Mexican Food</a> ($10).</p><p>Following a busy work day, we left for happy hour at <a href="https://victoriapdx.com/">Victoria Bar</a> around 4:15 p.m.</p><p>At the restaurant, I ordered <a href="https://www.insider.com/vegan-alternatives-for-popular-recipe-ingredients-2018-7">vegan "chicken" strips</a> with Parmesan-herb fries ($11) and the Inigo Montoya cocktail ($13). I got one more drink ($13.20) before we moved on, so all in all, I spent $35.08 at Luc Lac.</p><p>After we left the restaurant, we didn't want the night to end and also needed to use the restroom, so we set out in search of a bar. </p><p>We ended up at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=113638178668871">Yamhill Pub</a>, a quiet dive bar where we promised to get a round of beers ($17 for three drinks) in exchange for access to their bathrooms.</p><p>It was a late night, and we didn't get back to the van until 2 a.m.</p><h2>Day 5: I splurged on a facial and edibles — $220.50</h2><div type="image" title="Mississippi Marketplace in Portland, Oregon" height="3024" width="4032" msid="92372311" hostid="261" sizebytes="1647764"></div><p>Since my skin was breaking out, I booked a 60-minute custom holistic facial ($120) at <a href="https://www.bloomingmoonspa.com/">Blooming Moon Spa</a>, which offers organic skincare services using cruelty-free products. <br /><br />I also bought a small red calcite crystal ($5), which I placed on my chest during the treatment for its grounding energy, and a sticker ($4). </p><p>After tipping my esthetician, I spent a total of $155, which I thought was well worth it.</p><p>From the spa, I walked over to Mississippi Avenue and popped into <a href="https://paxtongate.com/">Paxton Gate</a>, a store that carries ethically sourced taxidermy, fossils, bones, and crystals. I opted for a latte from <a href="https://www.bloodbuzzpdx.com/">Bloodbuzz</a> ($5.50) and a sushi burrito from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TeppanyakiHut/?ref=page_internal&amp;mt_nav=1">Teppanyaki Hut</a> ($12). </p><p>Marijuana <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/legal-marijuana-states-2018-1">has been legal</a> in Oregon since 2015, so we made a final stop at <a href="https://nectar.store/">Nectar,</a> a dispensary that sells locally grown cannabis. There was a sale on edibles that day, so I ended up buying four packages of <a href="https://wyldcanna.com/">Wyld gummies</a> ($12 each). </p><p>At that point, our time in Portland had come to a close. And that's without paying for accommodations.</p><p>An Airbnb or <a href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.insider.com/things-you-should-never-do-in-a-hotel-2019-12&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1655837937801498&amp;usg=AOvVaw2yw57BjIXraaezVxFPUXq7">hotel</a> would have cost at least $500 for the five days we were there, so I'm grateful that my friend's parents let us borrow their sprinter van for free. </p><p>The van was also our main mode of transportation to and from Portland. So even though gas was expensive, we balanced out the cost by walking a lot and only driving when it was really necessary.</p><p>Additionally, we saved <keyword id="11918408" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="money" source="Orion">money</keyword> by bringing groceries with us and cooking a few meals. Though I rarely regret spending money on food and drinks, I would've liked to spend less money on <a href="https://www.insider.com/drinks-to-always-and-never-order-at-a-bar-bartender-2022-3">alcohol</a>.</p><p>My biggest expense was the <a href="https://www.insider.com/reasons-to-get-a-facial-often-2018-4">facial</a>, but the cost was worth it to leave the city feeling rejuvenated after breaking out early on in the trip. Many passengers overlook it, but it <a href="https://www.insider.com/advice-for-buying-and-fixing-up-a-used-van">can save you a lot of time and money</a>.</p><p>It contains important information like the hourly activities, the weather, special happenings, the drink of the day, and information on the ports. </p><h2><strong>Missing the all-aboard time on port days is an expensive mistake</strong></h2><p>In my years of working cruises, I have seen more than a handful of guests miss the ship.</p><p>While this is a huge fear for most passengers, it usually happens to <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-cruises-for-retirees-to-go-on-2019-5">avid cruisers</a> — people who have been to the port many times before sometimes assume the all-aboard time is always the same.</p><p>But this time varies by cruise, and it's stated on multiple signs at the exit gangway, in the daily planner, and in the captain's announcement.</p><p>Also, always triple-check whether the all-aboard time is based on the ship's clock or the local time.</p><p>If you miss the ship, you'll have to get yourself to the next port, which can be very pricey.</p><h2><strong>Passengers miss out on discounts by not booking their next cruise while still on the ship</strong></h2><p>Booking a future vacation while cruising <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-cruise-ship-loyalty-programs-to-join-2019-6">can get you bigger discounts</a>, access to new itineraries not open to the general public yet, and a lot of onboard credit.</p><p>These booking appointments are usually filled up by the last few days of the cruise, so head there at the beginning of your stay for more deals and no wait.</p><h2><strong>Booking a tour with an outside operator can be risky</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="ship crew having fun" height="2802" width="3736" msid="84068001" hostid="261"></div><p>Although it might be a lot cheaper to book your tours independently, it's also a lot riskier. </p><p>The onboard excursions through the ship are with verified operators. And most cruise lines will wait for the ship's tour to return before leaving the port, even if it's hours late. </p><p>But this is not the case if you book on your own, and running through the port to <a href="https://www.insider.com/cruise-ship-horror-stories-2018-7">find the ship sailing away</a> is probably not the excursion you're looking for.</p><h2><strong>Immediately removing the automatic gratuity affects many staff members</strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/adults-disney-cruise-line-2018-9">On most cruise ships</a>, there is a preset daily gratuity charged per passenger unless it's removed at the guest-services desk.</p><p>I see so many people come on board and immediately remove the charge, but this fee is usually split between your housekeeping, dining, and cleaning staff. It is essential to their jobs and affects their livelihoods.</p><p>I'd recommend waiting until the end of the cruise to make sure you're happy with the service instead of removing it on day one. You can also increase or decrease the amount instead of cutting it. </p><h2><strong>Packing prohibited items can lead to a headache</strong></h2><p>As confident as you are that you can sneak on your portable iron, I seriously advise against packing anything that's not allowed on board. </p><p>Security scans your bags on embarkation day, and if a prohibited item — like an iron, a bottle of vodka, or a candle — is found, they will hold your bag.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/travel-packing-tips-and-tricks-2019-3">Your luggage</a> won't be delivered to your door, and you'll have to wait several hours until security contacts you, brings you to the holding area to search the bag, and confiscates the item until the end of the cruise.</p><h2><strong>Prepare your necessary travel documents to avoid trouble at ports</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="a view of mountains and water off the front of a ship" height="2274" width="3024" msid="84068003" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/top-cruise-destinations-this-year-2019-7">Cruise ships journey all over the world</a>, so make sure to check if you need specific visas or documents based on your nationality.</p><p>You are responsible for knowing and bringing your own paperwork. If you don't have the right documents, you might not be able to get off at a port or, even worse, be allowed back on the ship.</p><p>I saw this happen when traveling to India with many American guests, a handful of whom didn't realize they needed a visa.</p><h2><strong>Dressing down on formal night limits your dining options</strong></h2><p>Even though walking through the promenade in shorts is your choice, many guests aren't aware that there's usually a formal evening on cruises.</p><p>Most passengers don <a href="https://www.insider.com/julia-roberts-fashion-evolution-2018-10">evening gowns</a> and suits on formal night, and I've met cruisers who wished they would've packed at least one nice item — besides their Margaritaville shirt, of course.</p><p>Passengers not formally dressed on this evening aren't allowed to eat in the main dining rooms, though the buffet is open to everyone.</p><h2><strong>It's worth learning the difference between port and starboard</strong></h2><p>Different announcements will direct passengers to either the port side or starboard side of the ship, so it's best to brush up on the jargon before your vacation.</p><p>Port is the left side of the boat and starboard is the right, always configured facing the front of the ship.</p><p>Just remember that "port" and "left" are both four letters. Originally slated to return home on December 15, troops will now remain at their assignment through at least January 31, 2019.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-troops-are-staying-at-the-us-mexico-border-through-christmas-2018-12">US troops are staying at the US-Mexico border through Christmas and into the new year</a></em></p><p>These are not the only troops who will be away from home for the holidays - some 14,000 service members are currently deployed to Afghanistan, and many more are in Syria to fight ISIS militants, as well as on missions around the globe.</p><p>While nothing can compare to spending time with loved ones over the holidays, there are a few ways to make the holiday away from home a little easier to bear.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>One of the best ways to help support deployed troops is to send a care package - a box packed with items from home that are difficult to acquire overseas. </p><h3>What to send</h3><p>Think of anything you use or love that gets you through the day - odds are troops need those things too, and commodities can be difficult to acquire overseas. </p><p>Non-perishable food and snacks are always a welcome surprise. Items like peanut butter, jerky, trail mix, nuts and dried fruit are perfect for mailing overseas. Consider powdered drink mixes that can be mixed with water, condiments that can be added to MREs, and individually packed protein snacks.</p><p>Try to avoid items that will likely melt or stick together, and if you think something will spill or get messy during the journey - things like chocolate, gum and gummy candy - wrap it in a plastic bag so it won't ruin everything else. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>The plastic bag trick also works with toiletries, something troops definitely enjoy. From baby wipes to hair products, the right item in the hands of the right service member can boost morale tremendously. Be careful sending wipes to ships, though - they clog the ship's plumbing system (and nobody wants to know what it takes for the sailors to make that repair).</p><p>Unless you know the individual to whom you will be sending the package, try to send unscented items. Lotion, sunscreen, deodorant, mouthwash and hand sanitizer are good items to send. Shaving supplies are also recommended, with a preference for unscented items that can be used by any gender.</p><p>Tobacco products. Many service members use tobacco products, and even if they don't, they can trade dip or cigarettes for other stuff. Just make sure any products are sealed. Do not send alcohol or drugs. Just don't.</p><p>Books and magazines are a hit or miss, so make sure any reading materials are clean, popular items. Nobody wants to read Dianetics, no matter what L. Ron Hubbard's service record looks like.</p><p>Cards and letters have tremendous sentimental value, especially drawings from children, which can also at times provide comic relief. This is a great way to let our troops know that real people at home are thinking of them, especially during the holidays. </p><h3>How to send </h3><p>Regular rules apply for USPS restricted items. No aerosols, liquids, weapons or animal or plant products. Those are just a few examples, so make sure to check out <a href="https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/703.htm#ep1113810">this link for the postal service's guidelines</a>. </p><p>The link above also gives details on how to address packages. Take special care not to include any reference to foreign cities or countries on the package and leave out "United States" or any variation thereof. This may result in your package entering an international mailing system, which will subject it and you to extra costs and conditions.</p><p>Mail can not be addressed "any soldier" or variations thereof. Packages must be addressed to a specific person or job title, such as "Commanding Officer" or "Sgt. John P. Doe." The second line should identify the individual's unit or PSC, and the FPO/APO and AA/AE/AP designations will fall on the city/state/zip code line. <a href="https://www.usps.com/ship/apo-fpo-dpo.htm">This link shows several examples</a>. </p><h3>Organizations that can help</h3><p>If you don't know anyone in the military but still want to send a package, there are a number of organizations that can help you to help the troops. </p><p>If you live near a military or national guard installation, you may be able to provide support to one of its deployed units.
