Around 642 million people voted in Lok Sabha elections held over seven phases in a mammoth six-week period. The counting of votes began starting with postal ballot papers amid tight security. The counting for State Legislative Assemblies of 175 Assembly constituencies in Andhra Pradesh and 147 Assembly constituencies in Odisha and results of bypolls in 25 Assembly constituencies also began. The Lok Sabha elections for 543 seats of the lower house were held across seven phases. The Congress party and its allies dismissed the exit polls as "orchestrated" and a work of "fantasy", asserting that the opposition INDIA bloc will form the next government at the Centre. Earlier on April 22, Mukesh Dalal won the election "unopposed". Congress nominee Nilesh Kumbhani's nomination was rejected. His candidacy was rejected because of alleged discrepancies in the signatures of the proposers.

The ruling BJP has demonstrated that it still has the pulse of the people in the Hindi heartland, despite the conflicting views that came from psephologists. Even before all the rounds of counting were over, spokespersons of the party called the elections and celebrations kicked off in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and even Chhattisgarh. Rajasthan: BJP makes a comeback The Bharatiya Janata Party is returning to power in Rajasthan having won 115 seats, as per the Election Commission of India. There are 199 Assembly seats in Rajasthan, and the halfway mark is 100. The Congress was in the incumbent party in the state. The beating of drums and dancing by BJP workers started early in Jaipur as official EC trends showed the party build lead. Rahul Gandhi-led Congress won 69 seats. Former chief minister and BJP leader Vasundhara Raje won from the Jhalrapatan seat. Among the other BJP candidates who won were Diya Kumari from Vidhyadhnagar, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore from Jhotwara, Samaram from Pindwara Abu, Govind Prasad from Manohar Thana, Jaswant Singh Yadav from Behror, Mahendra Pal Meena from Jamwa Ramgarh, Anita Bhadel from Ajmer South, and Madan Dilawar from Ramganj Mandi. The Congress candidates who secured victory included Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot from Sardarpura, Sachin Pilot from Tonk, Shanti Dhariwal from Kota North, Tikaram Jully from Alwar Rural, and Anita Jatav from Hindaun. Madhya Pradesh: BJP returns The ruling BJP looks on course to retain power in Madhya Pradesh. As per the latest figures available with the Election Commission, the BJP was leading in 163 of the 230 seats in Madhya Pradesh, while the Congress was ahead in 66 seats. Many party leaders attributed the electoral success to PM Narendra Modi, who addressed as many as 14 poll rallies in the state. The state Congress office bore a deserted look. In Budhni assembly constituency, Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan of BJP defeated Vikram Sharma of Congress by over 1 lakh votes. Chhattisgarh: BJP back in power Chhattisgarh, witnessed a close fight between Bharatiya Janata Party and the ruling Congress party in the early hours of counting, as per the trends by the Elections Commission of India. The BJP crossed the halfway mark by winning 54 seats Out of the total 90 constituencies, the Congress won 35 seats The Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP) bagged one seat, as per the Election Commission. In the 2018 assembly polls, the Congress had won 68 seats and the then ruling BJP 15. The Janata Congress Chhattisgarh had won five segments. Much ahead of the elections this year, the Congress declared that the state would procure 20 quintals of paddy per acre from farmers in this kharif season. The total number of parliamentary seats in UP is 80. In 2014 general elections for the parliament, SP got only 4 seats out of 80 from Uttar Pradesh. In 2009 elections, SP won from 22 constituencies. The winning statistics for SP during 2004 was 35 seats. In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Akilesh Yadav is fighting from Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat. Dharmendra Yadav fights from Badaun, Devendra Yadav from Etah, and Mulayam Singh Yadav seeks election from Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency. The other important candidates for SP in UP are Azam Khan from Rampur and S.T. Hassan from Moradabad Lok Sabha seat. SP has nominated Shafiq-ur-Rehman from Sambhal ruling out the speculations that the party might field Aparna Yadav from here. In Maharashtra, SP was interested to form an alliance with the Congress party. The Congress did not heed to the demands of SP for any one seat among Mumbai South, Mumbai South Central, Bhiwandi, Mumbai North West, or Mumbai North Central seats. Following that, SP entered into an alliance with the BSP and they both agreed upon the seat sharing formula at the rate of 4 seats for SP and 44 seats for BSP. In Maharashtra, SP contested from four seats namely Mumbai North West, Bhiwandi, Beed, and Nanded.

LJP candidate Rakesh Raushan bagged nearly 25,000 votes in the seat. Tejashwi's elder brother <keyword id="6355331" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tej-pratap-yadav">Tej Pratap Yadav</keyword> also won from Hasanpur seat by over 21,000 votes. However, the NDA seems to be headed for a majority against the Grand Alliance as per the latest trends and results. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav wins Raghopur by over 38,000 votes in Bihar Election 2020

That UAE has a lot of super rich and super successful Indians is not a hidden fact, and in a bid to do something for their country while benefiting from the huge scopes of returns on investment, five such leading Indian-owned businesses in the UAE will be investing over $3.68 billion in infrastructure and industrial development initiatives in the state of Uttar Pradesh (UP). For this, an MoU has been signed during an investment forum held in Dubai. 
 <keyword id="6355031" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akhilesh-Yadav">Akhilesh Yadav</keyword>, the Chief Minister of UP, had earlier launched what he called an ambitious programme to boost the all-round development of the state, which was to be done by attracting NRI investments from across the globe, with a special focus on the Middle East. 
 
The companies have pledged to invest in the upcoming manufacturing, utilities and healthcare initiatives in the state, and their names will be made public in the coming weeks. 
 
It was a few months back that the Abu Dhabi-based Lulu Group had announced its decision to invest Rs 1000 crore to set up a shopping mall, convention centre and five-star hotel in the state, which would also create more than 3,000 jobs once it is completed.

Five Indian-owned firms from UAE are going to revamp UP’s infrastructure

Chief minister <keyword id="6355031" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akhilesh-Yadav">Akhilesh Yadav</keyword> on Thursday said having a President's rule in his state is not desirable and if needed, he will tie up with <keyword id="6355170" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BSP">BSP</keyword>. 
 In case <keyword id="6354265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party">Samajwadi Party</keyword> doesn’t get majority, Akhilesh Yadav told <keyword id="60684" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BBC">BBC</keyword> that it is better to join hands with <keyword id="6357690" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mayawati">Mayawati</keyword> than to see the state under Presidents Rule.

His surprising remarks right when exit poll predicted BJP could win with majority in the state. While some of the survey predicted BJP emerging as the single largest party in UP, other gave them a clean majority. 
 Despite <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> alliance with the ruling Samajwadi Party, the alliance seems to have failed in gaining desirable results. 
 
Notably, Times Now's exit poll gives the BJP a sharp edge, saying it will win between 190 and 210 seats in Uttar Pradesh; 201 seats will obviously give the BJP a majority. Times Now expects the SP-Congress alliance to win between 110 and 130 seats, while the BSP may get anywhere between 54 and 74 seats, it says. 
 
VMR's exit poll predicts as many as 200 seats for the BJP, 120 for the SP-Congress alliance and 64 for the BSP.

UP CM Akhilesh Yadav says he is ready to tie up with BSP if needed

Ninety-five-year old wheelchair ridden <keyword id="4104199" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jal-Devi">Jal Devi</keyword> just proved that age is just a number when it comes to bringing about change in the society as she filed her nomination as an independent candidate for the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UP+ELECTIONS&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">upcoming assembly elections </a>in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=uttar+pradesh&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Uttar Pradesh</a>. 
 
With this, she became the oldest candidate to do so. Elaborating on why she is intent on fighting the elections, Jal Devi said that her aim is to weed out corruption apart from ensuring smooth functioning in the constituency. 
 
"Current government is fooling and troubling people. If they don't stop I also have my lathi which can swing anytime," she said while talking to ANI.

Ahead of the last phase of polling, Rashtriya Janata Dal <a href="https://www.bbc.com/hindi/amp/india-48275180?__twitter_impression=true">(RJD) has alleged</a> that Nitish Kumar, the current Chief Minister of Bihar and leader of the Janata Dal (United), will do a backward flip-- and break away from its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The basis of this speculation comes from JD(U)’s party secretary, K C Tyagi’s statement seeking special status for the state,which is one of Modi’s undelivered promises from 2014. While striking a dissonant chord with ally BJP, JD(U)’s Tyagi has also tried to woo rivals in Odisha ( Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD) Naveen Patnai), and in Andhra Pradesh (YSR Congress’s Jaganmohan Reddy and his immediate rival <keyword id="83019" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telugu-Desam-Party">Telugu Desam Party</keyword>’s (TDP) Chandrababu Naidu), who have similar demands from the centre. A motley crew of regional satraps ahead of the last phase of polling may be a crucial political manoeuvre. On May 19, 60 seats in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh are going to the polls. The Kingmakers Apart from its traditional rival, the Congress Party-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is challenged by Mahgathbandhan or a Grand Alliance that includes 12 political parties. It is led by Mayawati of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and <keyword id="6355031" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="akhilesh-yadav">Akhilesh Yadav</keyword> of <keyword id="6354265" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party">Samajwadi Party</keyword> (SP), who were former foes turned friends; proving yet again politics makes strange bedfellows. These are the clear sides in the election so far and one of the leaders is likely to become the next Prime Minister. However, the BJD, the YSR Congress, its state rival TDP, and the Telegana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) led by K Chandrashekhar Rao who are yet to pick sides, will have fewer seats but an outsized say in deciding the winner of this Lok Sabha election, in the case of an utterly fractured mandate. The three states put together have 86 seats at stake in the Lok Sabha. Even half of those seats will wield significant power in case any of the other three national coalitions fail to cross the halfway mark. ‘Special’ unity The one factor binding four out of the five regional parties is the demand for ‘special status’ for their respective states. Special status is given to states with historic disadvantages be it geographic issues like tough terrains or unviable state finances. It provides them with autonomy like the ability to establish development boards, and decide on reservations. Special status has also been the bone of contention between BJP and TDP. TDP head Chandrababu Naidu broke away from the NDA, after BJP refused the status, as Naidu re-builds the state after Telangana split from AP. What is bringing these parties together is a recent comment from the union finance minister and BJP leader Arun Jaitley that categorically dismissed the demand for <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/business/2019/apr/04/arun-jaitley-against-special-status-special-financial-packages-for-states-1960238.html">special status for AP</a>, saying the ‘time for seeking special status is over’. While JD(U) has denied any attempt to break away from the NDA, it has enough common ground with the other four parties that can influence government formation. This may be the prelude to hectic parleys after the results on May 23.
