Bobble AI report is based on over 50 million smartphone users’ (in 640+ Indian cities) data processed in a privacy-compliant manner. It also revealed that while tier 1 cities dominate the fashion festival figures, transactions in tier 2 cities like Jaipur, Guwahati, Lucknow, Kochi, Mysore, and Bhubaneswar are at an all-time high – up 82% over the previous year. Apart from that, the majority of consumers are between the ages of 26 and 35 accounting for 37%, and between the ages of 18 and 25, accounting for 26% with 72% males and 28% females. According to the data intelligence company’s survey on the state of eCommerce in India, which was conducted across Tier 1, 2 and 3, beauty e-commerce apps usage grew by 64%, whereas fashion e-commerce grew by 368% over the past year. The festive period has only led the two e-commerce domains to skyrocket, with at least two transactions completed by shopaholics during the fashion festivals. In an interesting insight highlighted by the study, India’s fashion e-commerce industry has transformed from ‘Monopoly’ to ‘Ludo.’ Fashion giant Myntra faced tough competition from its competitive counterparts, Meesho, Ajio, and TataCliq. While almost 46% of all transactions belonged to Myntra during the 2020 festive period, Ajio bagged around 69% of all transactions in 2021. The share of Myntra’s active users, also using Meesho, Ajio, and TataCliq has also increased significantly, indicating how users are exploring multiple options this year. The battle of the e-commerce legends, Amazon, and Flipkart is worth noting, with Flipkart’s active user base rising 83% in 2021 online shopping festival compared to Amazon’s 72%. Despite the fact that Flipkart is dominating in terms of engagement metrics like search frequency and active sessions, Amazon is winning in terms of transactions, significantly less average session times. <ul><li><keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> may buy a 26% stake in <keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword> as it looks to expand its offline presence.</li><li>Reliance Retail has 10,644 stores in India and its profits grew by 70% in the last financial year. </li><li>Amazon is also reportedly in talks with Kishore Biyani’s Future Group.</li></ul>Global e-retail giant Amazon is looking to acquire a 26% stake in Reliance Retail, according to a <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/retail/amazon-may-shop-for-stake-in-reliance-retail/articleshow/70474456.cms">report by the Economic Times.</a> The two companies are reportedly in initial talks. While Amazon refused to comment on speculation, Reliance told ET that the company evaluates various opportunities at the same time and would make necessary announcements as is required by SEBI’s rules. Amazon holds 30% of the e-commerce market in India and is looking to hold on to a larger market share in the country. But that’s not enough because e-commerce still makes for only 3% of the country’s total retail market and Jeff Bezoz does not want to miss out on the money he can make from physical stores in India. With the recent changes in Indian e-commerce and the draft e-commerce policy not falling in favour with the likes of Amazon, physical retail seems to be the attractive option now. The deep discounting offered by the online retail giants will be off the shelves, which could once again turn the consumer’s attention to physical stores – where Reliance already has a major presence. Moreover, with the Narendra Modi government seems in no mood to ease its stance on the e-commerce policy and Amazon needs to find other ways of making good the losses. And that’s why it needs to reduce the risk of depending solely on a price-sensitive e-commerce market. Instead of investing in its own stores, the US-based company is looking to pick a stake in existing retailers. It had already attempted one with Kishore Biyani’s Future Group, <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/info-tech/amazons-stake-acquisition-in-future-retail-is-back-on-track-likely-to-be-announced-next-month/article26378967.ece">which is still in the works</a>. That leaves one of India’s largest physical retailers, Reliance Retail, owned by Asia’s richest man, <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>. Why Reliance Reliance Retail has 10,644 stores across 6,700 cities, with 100 million registered loyalty customers, and saw 150 million footfalls in their stores in the previous year. For the last financial year, Reliance Retail posted robust pre-tax profits today as it grew by around 70%, to ₹2,049 crores in the first quarter of 2019-20 as compared to ₹1,206 crore last year. Reliance Retail operates Reliance Fresh, Reliance Smart and Reliance Market stores, while in consumer electronics it has Reliance Digital, Reliance Digital Express Mini stores and Jio stores. In the fashion &amp; lifestyle segment, it has Reliance Trends, Trends Women, Project Eve, Reliance Footprint, Reliance Jewels and AJIO.com. Earlier this year, Reliance Retail had acquired the iconic British toy making company Hamley’s and in July completed the 100% acquisition of the company for a <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/mukesh-ambani-reliance-brands-completes-100-acquisition-of-hamleys/story/365664.html">reported</a> amount of ₹620 crore. Meanwhile, there are also reports that Reliance Retail is bringing the iconic American brand <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/fashion-/-cosmetics-/-jewellery/reliance-to-launch-iconic-jewelry-brand-tiffany-co-in-india/articleshow/70254628.cms">Tiffany &amp; co </a>to India, as per an ET report. The brand could be housed in the luxury mall that Ambani is planning to open next year in the Jio World Centre in Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai. How Amazon can help Ambani Reliance Retail has also been evaluating opportunities. It was earlier reportedly in talks with the Chinese e-retail giant Alibaba, but the deal fell through. Reliance, with its bets with Jio, has <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Money/oi23Lg12aO3MWoBs0Ha5MJ/RIL-Q3-result-Flat-profit-rising-debt-are-a-growing-worry.html">been piling up debt </a>even while the business grows. The main cash earner for Reliance is still its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/reliance-jio-and-reliance-retail-may-help-mukesh-ambani-rils-quarterly-earnings/articleshow/70274830.cms">petrochemical business</a> but with its falling profits it would need help from Jio and Retail. So, the money from selling stake to Amazon would help Reliance deal with the rising cash burn and clear some of the debt.

 "Post demonetisation, November sales had turned weak. But December onwards the sales growth has been strong and in double digits,” <keyword id="162214" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Govind-Shrikhande">Govind Shrikhande</keyword>, managing director at <keyword id="64373" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shoppers-Stop">Shoppers Stop</keyword>, told ET. He expects this year's end-of-season sale to beat all previous records. 
 
The e-commerce websites such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Myntra&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Myntra</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Jabong&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Jabong</a>, Tata Cliq and Reliance's <keyword id="3421090" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajio">Ajio</keyword>, too, have got good response to their end-of-season sales that coincided with those of brick-and-mortar retailers. 
 Top retailer <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>'s Brand Factory, which retails some 200 fashion brands including Wrangler, <keyword id="69300" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="nike">Nike</keyword>, Louis Philippe and <keyword id="197443" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Allen-Solly">Allen Solly</keyword>, said it crossed its sales target for special sale events planned around demonetisation. 
 
"The only impact of demonetisation was in the first week after announcement. We are out of it now,, Jitendernath Patri, chief marketing officer at Central, told ET. 
 
However, most brands report healthy growth in sales some feel it could have been better. 
 "This could have been one of the best seasons if not for demonetisation,” Kavindra Mishra, chief executive at denim brand <keyword id="737532" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pepe-Jeans">Pepe Jeans</keyword> that reported 18% likefor-like growth in the sale period, told ET. 
 Yogeshwar Sharma, executive director at Delhi's <keyword id="726947" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Select-Citywalk-Mall">Select Citywalk Mall</keyword>, expects luxury retailers to grow at a slower pace or remain flat, while other categories will grow 10-12%. 
 
"All retailers have put their best foot forward and are giving 40-60% off on merchandise, which is good enough to attract people to malls,” he told ET.

New Delhi, As the e-commerce battle intensifies in India, with <keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword>'s JioMart being the latest major entrant with a massive potential to disrupt the space, the next big thing is the <keyword id="6355447" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="delivery">delivery</keyword> of <keyword id="389479" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="groceries">groceries</keyword> online and the market size is estimated to grow eight times in the next five years in the country. As companies from Reliance to BigBasket put their top dollar in serving daily grocery at your doorsteps, <keyword id="1640900" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-grocery">online grocery</keyword> is going to be the next battleground for growth, expanding to over $18 billion by 2024. The eGrocery market has grown 60% from the calendar year 2020 and is expected to grow 41-49 per cent by the first half of CY21, according to the latest data provided by homegrown consulting firm RedSeer. Another recent report by Bengaluru-based RedSeer and Bigbasket (Brand Intelligence) found that demand for comfort foods like noodles and cookies, immunity boosters such as lemon, and hygiene products like sanitisers picked up after the pandemic while essentials remained strong. Within snacks and branded foods, biscuits and cookies were the largest sub-category and grew the most. "We have observed that traditional brands which pivoted quickly to be digitally ready brands have seen 2x+ jump in sales compared to offline brands," said Anil Kumar, founder and CEO of RedSeer. Now, JioMart is set to take the pole position in online delivery of groceries. "Grocery is the largest retail category. This makes it an important category for retailers and one that is going to drive future growth of online retail sales. JioMart will definitely be a key player in the months to come," said Satish Meena, Senior Forecast Analyst with global market research firm Forrester. Driven by the uptick in online grocery adoption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, "online retail sales will grow at a CAGR of 30 per cent from 2019 to 2024 and reach $359 billion", Meena informed. India is witnessing a surge in demand for online grocery. The latest Reliance takeover of <keyword id="44949" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>'s retail business is a major consolidation of organised grocery retail. In terms of grocery retail, the revenue of Reliance Retail in FY20 was Rs 346 billion and that of Future Retail's annualised revenue for FY20 was Rs 100 billion. According to Meena, grocery will also be the category where most marketplaces' investments will be made in the next five years. It is likely to be India’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/e-commerce-wars-amazons-jeff-bezos-vs-mukesh-ambani-in-india/articleshow/67620116.cms">largest retail chain operator</a> Reliance Retail, owned by Mukesh Ambani — the richest man, not only in India, but in Asia. The facts Physical retailers — with the brick-and-mortar stores— are the immediate benefactors. The new rules are expected to boost sales for offline vendors by taking away the discounts available to consumers online. CRISIL estimates that it could increase revenue for offline retailers by ₹100 billion to ₹120 billion by 2020. Just as the loss of business for e-commerce is the gain for retail chains, the advantage is usually with the larger players in the space — because of the sheer scale, reach and resources at their disposal. And the largest of them all is Reliance Retail. “The impact on e-tailers would be largely in the electronics and apparel segments, which account for a bulk of their revenues,” says Anuj Sethi, the senior director at CRISIL Ratings. Coincidentally, 34% of Reliance Retail’s revenue comes from its electronics arm — Reliance Digital. It’s also the largest holder of foreign brand licences for apparel in India. Some of its top brands include Diesel, Hamleys, Kenneth and Steve Madden. Reliance Retail’s offline avatar served 3.5 million customers a week through 9,146 stores across 5,800 cities as of September 2018. Brokerage house CLSA further estimates that the company’s revenue may grow nearly 12-fold to $138 billion in the next 10 years.

The timing There is no doubt that online retail still has a lot of potential in India. Nasscom and PricewaterCoopers (PwC) estimate that the market will balloon to $150 billion by 2022. So for Mukesh Ambani, as the chairman of Reliance Industries, it’s an unavoidable opportunity. One part of Reliance Retail— the apparel brand Ajio — is already online. Now, he is looking to expand the offerings beyond apparel, with a pilot programme in the state of Gujarat. Before Ambani’s entry, Amazon had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/amazon-takes-the-fight-to-walmart-by-investing-another-27-billion-in-india/articleshow/65404423.cms">invested over $4.7 billion</a> in India over the last six years, primarily because it identified the potential of a market with a population of nearly a billion and half people. Over the years, Amazon, Flipkart and other early birds have burnt billions of dollars giving discounts, getting people used to shopping online and creating a market. Then, the government revised its policy on foreign direct investment (FDI) in e-commerce on December 26, 2018, changing the rules of the game, which would bring the likes of Amazon and Walmart on a level playing field with new entrants. Less than a month later, Mukesh Ambani took the stage at the investor summit Vibrant Gujarat and unveiled his plan to expand his online retail business. The government’s new e-commerce rules are essentially trying to protect India’s retailers — including Reliance Retail — from the deep discounts offered by e-commerce giants. That is how Ambani’s physical stores gain. What’s more, as a new entrant to e-commerce, going against established players with equally deep pockets, Ambani will not have to burn money through discounts. In fact, he is not allowed to. He gets a level-playing field to fight established giants like Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart, at no extra cost. The spin Ambani had his own spin on why the change in rules was justified. "In this new world, data is the new oil. And data is the new wealth. India's data must be controlled and owned by Indian people and not by corporates, especially global corporations,” Ambani said at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2018. He was alluding to the fact that two biggest e-commerce companies in India are owned by foreigners, and they have access to priceless data on Indian consumer behaviour. Even people from the government echoed the ‘nationalistic’ spin to the story that Ambani offered. “We don’t want to build walls, but at the same time, we explicitly recognize and appreciate that data is a strategic asset,” Aruna Sundararajan, the nation’s secretary of telecommunications said last year at a press conference. The other view can be equally convincing to Ambani’s critics. John Elliott, the author of “Implosion: India’s tryst with reality” begs to differ. “The idea that Reliance is any safer at protecting Indian people’s data than Amazon or Walmart is ludicrous,” Elliott told Business Insider.
