The <keyword id="20376051" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget-airline" source="keywords">budget airline</keyword> is facing significant hurdles, including financial troubles, legal issues, and grounded aircraft, and is in urgent need of capital to meet its obligations. A source told PTI that Singh may sell as much as 15 percent of his stake, depending on market conditions. Another source told the news aggregator that Singh, who serves as both Chairman and Managing Director, will likely sell around 10 percent of his shares, though the amount could increase if necessary. SpiceJet is currently in talks with investors, both in India and abroad, for a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP), with commitments already made for up to Rs 2,000 crore. These funds are expected to help the airline cover operational expenses and address its various liabilities. While no official statement has been made by SpiceJet, insiders expect the funding round to be wrapped up by the end of September. As of June 2024, Ajay Singh and the promoter group held just over 47% of the airline, according to data from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). SpiceJet, which once had a fleet of 74 aircraft in 2019, now operates only around 20 planes. In a recent investor presentation, the airline announced plans to raise Rs 3,200 crore through QIP, warrants, and capital infusion by Singh. This cash will be used to bring grounded planes back into service, settle liabilities, acquire new aircraft, and cover other general expenses. The airline aims to secure Rs 2,500 crore through QIP and an additional Rs 736 crore from previously issued warrants and funds infused by Singh, as detailed in the presentation. Earlier this year, in January, SpiceJet raised Rs 1,060 crore through preferential issues, falling short of its initial goal of Rs 2,250 crore set in December 2023.

Faced with financial woes, legal battles and other headwinds, the no-frills carrier might ask more staff to leave as there is excess manpower now compared to the number of planes in service. A final decision on the quantum of layoffs is expected this week, one of the officials in the know said. When contacted, a SpiceJet spokesperson said the airline has initiated several measures, including manpower rationalisation, for achieving profitable growth but did not provide any numbers. The airline has around 9,000 employees and is now looking at reducing the strength by 10-15 per cent, the official said, adding that layoffs are necessary to reduce the overall costs and annual savings could be up to Rs 100 crore. A reduction of 15 per cent would mean around 1,350 people will lose their jobs. The second official in the know said that layoffs are expected across departments and the final list is being prepared. People from the management and consultancy are working on chalking out the contours of letting staff leave, and all the departments have been asked to give their inputs, the official added. There was no official comment from SpiceJet on the proposed job cuts. The second official explained that the airline has stopped operations on certain RCS (Regional Connectivity Scheme) routes and at those stations, there is excess manpower, especially staff with lower salaries. Relocating such people will be a challenge, the official noted. Currently, SpiceJet has a fleet of little over 30 aircraft apart from 10 planes that are on wet lease. "As part of our turnaround and cost-cutting strategy, following the recent fund infusion, SpiceJet has initiated several measures, including manpower rationalisation, aimed at achieving profitable growth and positioning ourselves to capitalise on the opportunities in the Indian aviation industry. "Through this initiative alone, we anticipate an annual saving of up to Rs 100 crore," the airline spokesperson said in a statement. During a meeting with the airline's senior officials last month, SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director <keyword id="19916067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ajay-singh" source="keywords">Ajay Singh</keyword> emphasised the importance of judicious spending and that he will personally oversee all major expenditures. The carrier will prioritise fleet upgrades, enhance on-time performance and cost-cutting measures will be implemented to streamline operations, according to an internal note last month. SpiceJet, which has undergone multiple ownership changes since inception and is currently helmed by Ajay Singh, is in the process of raising funds from various investors. On January 26, the carrier announced that it has received Rs 744 crore as the first tranche of the total Rs 2,250 crore proposed to be raised through the issuance of securities on a preferential basis. There were reports that there has been a delay in raising the requisite funds. The airline has also availed funds worth around Rs 1,000 crore under the government's Emergency <keyword id="20097541" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-line-guarantee-scheme" source="keywords">Credit Line Guarantee Scheme</keyword> (ECLGS) and Singh has committed to infuse Rs 500 crore. Budget carrier SpiceJet on Monday said its subsidiary <keyword id="6866514" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SpiceXpress" source="Orion">SpiceXpress</keyword> and Logistics will receive USD 100 million investment from a UK-based group. SpiceJet, which is facing financial headwinds and an insolvency plea by an aircraft lessor, had recently hived off SpiceXpress. Also, last week, the airline said it has no plans to file for insolvency and would invest USD 50 million to revive 25 grounded planes. The United Kingdom-based SRAM &amp; MRAM Group will invest USD 100 million in SpiceXpress. Both sides have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as part of the investment deal, the airline said in a release on Monday. The MoU also comes after a debt restructuring agreement between the carrier and aircraft lessor Carlyle Aviation Partner wherein the latter bought a stake in SpiceXpress at an anticipated future valuation of USD 1.5 billion (Rs 12,422 crore). SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said the USD 100 million investment should help SpiceXpress to grow further and expand and provide a more streamlined and efficient service to its customers. SRAM &amp; MRAM Group has interests in agricultural and agro-food products, neural networks, artificial intelligence, hedge fund management, hospitality services and solutions, media and publishing, among other areas. SpiceJet subsidiary SpiceXpress to get USD 100 mn from UK group

He termed the Go First development as "extremely unfortunate" and expressed hope that the airline can use this opportunity to resolve their issues. Asked about concerns on hike in airfares as a consequence of competitor Go First filing for voluntary insolvency, the SpiceJet chief said: "Those are temporary phenomena". "Of course when there is a mismatch of supply and demand, airfares will go up but this settles quite nicely as you would have seen the last time an airline went down there was a temporary period of mismatch and the capacity came into the system and fares were back to normal," Singh said. He further said that while the era of low airfares has helped in boosting air travel in this country, sometimes it has also led to difficulties for airlines as is evident for all to see. He observed that more rational airfares are required in the country and hoped that the fares will be more rational in the times to come. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an Assocham event, Singh, who is also the President of the industry body, said it was "Not at all likely" that the aviation sector will be affected by one airline going down. "You will see that the number as on April 30, we had 4,50,000 people who travelled by air, that was a record number. At no time in the past has <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> seen such a record number of people travelling by air and you will see the numbers bounce back really really quickly," he said. Rise in airfares due to Go First's bankruptcy is temporary says SpiceJet CEO

The airline on Friday said that despite a big jump in passenger traffic, business continued to be impacted by high fuel prices and the depreciating Rupee. The total revenue for the reported quarter was Rs 2,794 crore as against Rs 2,679 crore in the same quarter of the previous year. SpiceJet net profit jumps to ₹107 crore in Q3 FY2023

The no-frills airline, which has been grappling with multiple headwinds, including legal woes, is looking to raise fresh capital through issuance of eligible securities to qualified institutional buyers. Besides, the carrier plans to issue equity shares on preferential basis consequent upon conversion of outstanding liabilities into equity shares of the company, subject to applicable regulatory approvals, according to a filing to the <keyword id="35140" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bse" source="Orion">BSE</keyword>. Both plans will be taken up by the board of directors during its meeting scheduled for February 24. Specific details about the proposals could not be immediately ascertained. In December last year, SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director <keyword id="6357826" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ajay-singh" source="Orion">Ajay Singh</keyword> told shareholders that the company is engaged with investment bankers to raise up to USD 200 million in order to achieve its future plans. He had also said the increase in the <keyword id="9254513" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="emergency-credit-line-guarantee-scheme" source="Orion">Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme</keyword> (ECLGS) to Rs 1,500 crore will go a long way in providing the much-needed stability to the sector. "The infusion of additional funds will help SpiceJet normalise its obligations, unground its fleet and induct new planes into our fleet... we have also completed a series of settlements with most of our major partners including manufacturers and lessors setting the stage for our seamless growth and expansion," he had said. SpiceJet board will meet to consider fund raising funds, conversion of outstanding liabilities into equity

Amid the financial turmoil, the airline plans to raise USD 200 million, which is around Rs 1,600 crore at current exchange rates and expects to complete the hiving-off of its profitable cargo business into a separate company in the current quarter. In continuing woes for the carrier, aviation watchdog DGCA on Wednesday deregistered two more <keyword id="6357957" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="boeing" source="Orion">Boeing</keyword> 737 planes of SpiceJet, following non-payment of dues to lessors. With the latest deregistration, a total of six Boeing 737 aircraft of the budget carrier have been deregistered in August. The crisis-hit airline has also delayed payment of salaries to staff for the second straight month. However, SpiceJet said it has started crediting salaries from today and like the previous month, "salary will be credited in a graded format". Moreover, in the independent auditor's review report of the airline's latest quarterly results, it has been mentioned that there are indications of material uncertainties "that may cast significant doubt about the group's ability to continue as a going concern". On Wednesday, the airline also said that its Chief Financial Officer Sanjeev Taneja has resigned. The low-cost carrier had a net loss of Rs 729 crore in the quarter ended June 2021. In the latest June quarter, the net loss is Rs 420 crore, excluding forex adjustment. "Total revenue for the reported quarter was Rs 2,478 crore as against Rs 1,266 crore, a year-on-year growth of 126 per cent, in the same quarter of the previous year," the airline said in a release. The airline, which had delayed its March quarter and FY2022 earnings, saw its net loss widen to Rs 458 crore in the 2022 March quarter from Rs 235.3 crore in the year-ago period. For the full fiscal year 2021-22, the net loss surged 73 per cent to Rs 1,725 crore from Rs 998.30 crore in the comparable period. According to the airline, business was severely impacted by the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic and high fuel prices in the March quarter. SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director <keyword id="6357826" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ajay-singh" source="Orion">Ajay Singh</keyword> said the industry has been witness to one of the most severe operating environment in the recent past, which impacted the progress and recovery made in the third quarter of FY2022. In the June quarter, jet fuel prices rose 105 per cent on a year-on-year basis and 40 per cent on a sequential basis, the airline said. "We are optimistic about our future and our continued recovery and in order to achieve our future plans, the board has mandated fresh capital issuance and the company will be shortly engaging with investment bankers for a potential raise of up to USD 200 million," he said. The airline's cargo arm <keyword id="6866514" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="spicexpress" source="Orion">SpiceXpress</keyword> was in black during the first quarter of the current fiscal. It reported a net profit of Rs 18 crore. Cargo revenues rose 74 per cent to Rs 1,944 crore in FY2022. "We will soon conclude the hive-off of cargo business into a separate independent company, SpiceXpress in the current quarter which will be followed by capacity enhancement with additional freighter aircraft within FY2023," Singh said. Meanwhile, certain concerns have been flagged in the independent auditor report of the company's quarterly results. "... the group has an incurred net loss (after other comprehensive income) of Rs 7,827.82 million during the quarter ended 30 June 2022 and, as of that date, the group's accumulated losses amounts to Rs 67,471.11 million, which have resulted in complete erosion of its net worth and the current liabilities have exceeded its current assets by Rs 67,719.67 million as at 30 June 2022," it said. According to the report, these conditions and other matters indicate the existence of a material uncertainties that may cast significant doubt about the Group's ability to continue as a going concern. Singh said that despite the complex operating environment and highest-ever input costs, SpiceJet has been able to sustain its operations. "Last year was a period of restructuring and settlements and we successfully completed and implemented settlements with most of our major partners, including manufacturers and lessors setting the stage for our seamless growth and expansion. "As we move ahead, we are encouraged with the strong travel demand and our focus for the next year would be to induct more fuel-efficient Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft and concentrate on our regional and international routes," he added. In recent months, SpiceJet has been facing turbulent times, including financial headwinds. In July, the regulator directed the airline to operate only 50 per cent of flights in the wake of many of its planes facing technical issues. SpiceJet promoter <keyword id="6357826" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ajay-singh" source="Orion">Ajay Singh</keyword> holds a stake of around 60 per cent in the budget carrier. Sources said a big Middle Eastern airline has expressed interest to pick a 24 per cent stake and a board seat in SpiceJet. A big Indian business conglomerate has also approached Singh for a stake in the airline. Reacting to the development, a <keyword id="1002649" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="spicejet-spokesperson" source="Orion">SpiceJet Spokesperson</keyword> said, "The company continues to be in discussions with various investors to secure sustainable financing and will make appropriate disclosures in accordance with applicable regulations." Earlier, on Tuesday, SpiceJet said that it entered into a full and final settlement with the <keyword id="54875" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="airports-authority-of-india" source="Orion">Airports Authority of India</keyword> (<keyword id="47439" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aai" source="Orion">AAI</keyword>) and has cleared all outstanding principal dues of the airport operator. With this, SpiceJet will no longer remain on 'cash and carry' at AAI run airports across the country and will revert to advance payment mechanism for daily flight operations. "Tatas have submitted a financial bid for Air India," a Tata Sons spokesperson said. Taking to Twitter, DIPAM Secretary, Tuhin Kanta Pandey said that the disinvestment process now moves to the concluding stage. "Financial bids for Air India disinvestment received by Transaction Adviser. Process now moves to concluding stage," he posted. Though Tatas have confirmed their particiupation in the financial bid, sources said that the promoter of domestic carrier SpiceJet, <keyword id="6357826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajay-Singh" source="Orion">Ajay Singh</keyword> may also have placed the bids for the debt-ridden carrier. The Tatas bid was much-anticipated as its name of had been doing the rounds for some time now. Further, the CBDT also allowed new owners of erstwhile public sector companies to carry forward losses and set these off against future profits, in a bid to raise more interest for the proposed privatisation processes. During the Budget speech for FY22, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said that all the proposed privatisation process would be completed by the end of the fiscal, including the much-delayed strategic disinvestment of Air India. As per the company, business continues to be severely impacted by the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic which has adversely hit <keyword id="6363823" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="operations">operations</keyword> and travel demand. The airline reported a net loss of ₹998.3 crore in <keyword id="9290552" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fy2021">FY2021</keyword>. On a segment wise basis, the revenue from cargo operations increased by 518 per cent aggregating to ₹1,117.5 crore for FY2021 with profit of Rs 130.9 crore for the full year against a loss of ₹134.2 crore for the previous year. SpiceJet to raise ₹2,500 crore, quarterly loss narrows

SpiceJet Ltd on Monday said it has hived off its cargo and logistics business <keyword id="6866514" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SpiceXpress" source="Orion">SpiceXpress</keyword> into a separate entity -- SpiceXpress and Logistics Pvt Ltd, from April 1. The move results in a one-time gain of Rs 2,555.77 crore for SpiceJet, substantially reducing its negative net worth, the company said. It also paves the way for SpiceXpress to raise funds independently, SpiceJet said. The decision to hive off SpiceXpress is in sync with the company's long-term business plan and will unlock significant valuation of the logistic business, SpiceJet Ltd Chairman Ajay Singh said. Singh further said "the separation of our cargo and logistics arm is a stepping stone in our growth story which shall unfold in the times to come". SpiceXpress reported a net profit of Rs 51.4 crore for the April-December period of FY23. "In a bid to boost the growth of its cargo business and provide a more streamlined and efficient service to its customers, SpiceJet Ltd has completed the hive off of its cargo and logistics division 'SpiceXpress' into a separate entity, SpiceXpress and Logistics Private Limited," the company said. The consideration for the slump-sale will be discharged by SpiceXpress by issuance of securities in the combination of equity shares and compulsorily convertible debentures to SpiceJet for an aggregate amount of Rs 2,555.77 crore which will also strengthen the balance sheet of SpiceJet, it said. According to Singh, "SpiceXpress will provide greater and differentiated focus to cargo and logistics business and will allow the possibility of raising capital for the business to accelerate its growth". Both SpiceJet and SpiceXpress have great potential and will complement each other well, he added. He also said that the hive off will not only enable SpiceXpress to raise cash independently, it will significantly reduce SpiceJet's negative net worth. "Having restructured over USD 100 million, outstanding dues to Carlyle Aviation Partner last month, the hive off will further strengthen and deleverage our balance sheet," Singh said.
