<ul><li>The multiplex behemoth now owns more than 1,650 screens across over 350 properties in 110 cities in the country.</li><li>The combined entity aims to open 180-200 screens per year, across formats, in the next two years.</li><li>The merged entity can definitely achieve bigger goals, but needs good content.</li></ul>After the merger of two <keyword id="16783584" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="multiplex-chains-PVR-and-Inox-Leisure" source="Orion">multiplex chains PVR and Inox Leisure</keyword> this year, the merged entity has become a behemoth in the country, and fifth largest listed multiplex chain globally by screen count. While the merger was announced last March, the record date for the scheme of amalgamation between the two multiplex operators happened in February 2023. The combined entity will start trading with the name PVR-INOX on exchanges in March 2023 and their combined financials would be reported from 4QFY23. The multiplex behemoth now owns more than 1,650 screens across 350 properties, in 110 cities. “PVR-INOX now controls 18% screen share (43% share in multiplex screens in India) and 30% box-office share (over 50% share of multiplex box office). The merged entity commands the highest multiplex market share in all key regions of India. PVR-INOX would become the fifth-largest listed multiplex chain globally by screen count with the highest number of admissions per screen (around 127,000 admissions/screen in 2019),” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. The combined entity aims to open 180-200 screens per year, across formats, in the next two years. “Capex per year would be ₹8-8.5 billion (₹800-850 crore). Over 40% new screen openings will come from the South as it remains underpenetrated,” said the report. While merged entity gains the lion’s share, real issue still remains poor content While the merged entity can definitely achieve bigger goals, analysts believe the real issue still remains poor content leading to flop movies on screen. “The management has guided for annual synergy benefits of ₹2.25 billion (₹225 crore) at the EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) level in the next 12-24 months,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Analysts say that the merged entity has no real competitor and should remain focused on strengthening its position at the cost of single-screen theatres and smaller chains. Yet, there are challenges that all multiplexes will face bringing in the mega footfalls. For one, the Hindi cinema industry itself is facing the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/its-not-bollywood-films-its-the-superstars-that-people-seem-to-be-tired-of/articleshow/92382077.cms">shifting trend and migration of audiences to South movies</a> which captured audiences with larger-than-life characters. Rapid adoption of OTT, proliferation of social media and an active ‘Boycott Bollywood’ campaign and higher ticket prices have impacted footfalls in theatres, say analysts at Emkay Global. “While focus of the merged entity now shifts to realising synergies, the crucial issue of footfall recovery remains moot. Post-Covid, we have witnessed a clear dichotomy in box-office performance, with a high proportion of movies turning out to be duds; we believe the main culprit is the sub-par content quality, punctured by the weak critic and audience reviews,” said a report by Emkay Global. Not star power, alone It’s because of the increasing Southern push that <keyword id="4568700" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PVR-INOX" source="Orion">PVR Inox</keyword> are planning to boost the addition of new cinemas there. “With Bollywood content not up to the mark, footfalls have not seen a meaningful uptick post Covid. Only select movies with differentiated offerings have managed to taste success at the box office. As we have emphasised in the past too, Bollywood’s recovery is critical to box-office collections, with regional and Hollywood contribution being only sporadic in nature,” said the report. Bollywood continues to witness poor movie performance with most movies including Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Goodbye and Uunchai, Akshay Kumar’s Ram Setu and Ranveer Singh’s Cirkus not meeting expectations except for Drishyam 2 and Pathaan. “Going ahead too, we believe that star power alone cannot drive collections, if there is no differentiating factor in the movie,” said the Emkay Global report. In Q3 FY23, only one Bollywood movie i.e Drishyam 2 managed to break the ₹100 crore box office barrier. “CY22 has been one of the worst years for Bollywood, with very few movies finding traction. A mere 7% of the major movies that were released in the CY21/22 managed to recover their investment and yielded some profit. Prior to Covid, this was close to 30%, with more than 40% of movies doing well in CY19,” said a report by Emkay. While Inox-PVR have a bigger screen presence, they need what it takes to bring in audiences — better movies, bigger hits from Bollywood and Hollywood alike – in addition to South superhits. PVR-INOX, now fifth largest listed multiplex chain globally, awaits good movies

New Delhi, Feb 17 () GE and Vedanta on Monday jointly announced that they have entered into a pact to install the US-based firm's digital smelter solution at the latter's aluminium plant at Jharsuguda in Odisha for improving productivity. "GE and Vedanta Ltd's aluminium &amp; power business signed an agreement to implement GE's digital smelter solutions at its largest smelter in India at Jharsuguda in Odisha to significantly increase its operational efficiency and productivity," according to a joint statement. This will be the first such deployment of digital twin technology at any aluminium smelter in India and is part of Vedanta's long-term digital transformation initiatives, it added. The digital twin technology and advanced data analytics being deployed are expected to substantially reduce specific power consumption at the smelter. Typically, it said a 1 per cent reduction in specific power consumption based on digital smelter solutions can save about USD 4-5 million annually in the smelter potlines alone, for every 1 million tonne per annum (MTPA) of aluminium production. In addition, this digital solution is expected to improve raw material utilisation, increase smelter pot life, operational efficiency, safety and reduce wastage. "Being the largest producer of aluminium in India, with an extensive value-added product portfolio, this partnership with GE will help us enhance sustainability and bring in more predictability to our business," Ajay Kapur, CEO (aluminium &amp; power business) of Vedanta Ltd, said in the statement. Based on comparisons to past bull market stretches, the group has historically risen roughly 230% during expansion periods that last 42 months on average, according to BAML data.The firm says that Asian EM stocks - which have exploded by 60% since the start of 2016, outperforming global equities by 27% - could continue to thrive until they're faced with a recession, or with valuations that extend to a price-to-book ratio of three times."We think a substantial overweight in Asia/EM equities is warranted," Ajay Kapur, BAML's Asia Pacific equity and global emerging markets strategist wrote in a recent client note. "We recommend investors to raise exposure if they haven't already. Let the bull market do its job."So what countries is Kapur referring to specifically? "We are aware of the controversy over Piketty's math (see the FT Money Supply blog), but are generally comfortable with the thrust of his analysis, having read his 577-pager, looked at his (problematic) spreadsheets, and cross-checked his data with alternative, credible sources," write BofA Merrill Lynch's Ajay Kapur. "His questionable assumptions do not detract from the power of his thesis."
Kapur and his team said this in a lengthy report titled, "Piketty and Plutonomy: The revenge of inequality," outlining the impacts of plutonomists, or the super rich, on investors. 
They lead by stating, "Plutonomists - the very rich - cannot be ignored."
The skew toward the super-rich makes looking at averages an incomplete exercise, they argue (emphasis ours):
"When wealth and income are as concentrated as they are, and expected (a la Piketty) to get even more so, examining the 'average' consumer or 'average' investor makes little sense. Examining the fat tail - the behavior of the plutonomists, rather than that of the multitudinous many - is more advantageous to investors. Plutonomists determine and dominate spending and investment decisions and their magnitudes. Any analysis that does not tease out the skewed global income and wealth distribution, but focuses on the average is flawed from the start and is incomplete, as we step into its deeper extremes."
"Economic and earnings surprises are linked to their behavior," they write.

The Tragedy Of Macbeth 
Written in April 1611, this tragedy play was the inspiration of Maqbool. The movie had some of the biggest Indian parallel cinestars like Pankaj Kapoor, Irrfan, Tabu, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and Piyush Mishra. Released in the year 2003, the movie was produced by Bobby Bedi and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, who also composed the background score of the movie. Though it failed to perform much at the BO, the movie is considered a landmark in terms of acting and direction. 
 
The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice 
Written approximately in 1603, this tragedy play inspired Omkara, starring Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma, Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Naseeruddin Shah and Bipasha Basu. The 2006 movie was produced by Kumar Mangat and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, thus becoming the second Shakespeare work adapted into a movie by Bhardwaj. The movie was a critical and commercial success, and won three National Awards. 
 
The Comedy Of Errors 
Believed to be written in 1594, the comedy play has inspired six Indian movies, viz. Do Dooni Char (1968) starring Kishore Kumar and Asit Sen; Angoor (1982) starring Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma; Bhrantibilas (1963 Bengali film) starring Uttam Kumar and Bhanu Bandopadhyay; Ulta Palta (1997 Kannada film) starring Ramesh Aravind and Karibasavaiah; Aamait Asal Eemait Kusal (2012 Tulu film) starring Naveen D Padil and Jyotish Shetty; and Double Di Trouble (2014 Punjabi film) starring Dharmendra and Gippy Grewal. 
 
Romeo And Juliet 
Written in 1597, the tragedy play has inspired many Bollywood movies till date. Written in 1603, the tragedy has inspired Haider, starring Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Tabbu, Kay Kay Menon, and Irrfan Khan. The movie is produced by Vishal Bhardwaj and Siddharth Roy Kapur, and is directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. This is the third film that Bhardwaj has adapted from Shakespeare’s plays. The movie is all set to release on 2nd October 2014.

In this scenario, Gapen estimated that the US would see a 0.5% reduction in annual GDP growth in the year after implementation.Stringer/ReutersWorkers process laptop accessories at a factory in China.Meanwhile, Buiter said Citi estimates trade and other policy uncertainties could be a 1% drag on US GDP over the next year.And should Trump eventually follow through with any of these policies, the US risks retaliatory measures from other countries."If tariffs are more punitive and lead to a public trade spat with China, markets will get nervous, especially if a sharp, retaliatory, [Chinese yuan] depreciation looks like a realistic response," said Ajay Rajadhyaksha, head of macro research at Barclays.If other countries follow this pattern, it could lead to a downward spiral or litigation at the World Trade Organization."Depending on the specific measures, retaliatory action from elsewhere could be expected, while the risk of trade and currency wars could grow," said Janet Henry, chief global economist at HSBC.<h2>Making it more expensive for consumers</h2>An increase in tariffs could be passed through to individual Americans by companies in the form of higher prices.Parts for consumer items are made abroad, so increasing tariffs could make it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-pressures-under-president-trump-2016-11">more expensive to import</a> these parts for goods. To protect corporate profits and margins, companies could hike prices - which is not ideal for consumers.Aaron P. Bernstein/Getty ImagesA crucial thing to consider here is that this type of price increase is not caused by the virtuous wage and price increase cycle, but rather by an exogenous shock to prices without a boost to the labor market. In plain English, that means that while parts manufactured in China instantly become more expensive for Americans under tariffs, wages do not necessarily go up by the corresponding amount to offset this cost increase.Theoretically, companies could avoid tariffs by increasing production in the US. However, the problem is that labor is more expensive in America, so even if companies brought production to the US, the increased labor costs could push prices up, too.<h2>A 'nail in the coffin' of the post-World War II economic order</h2>Not only could Trump's moves affect US consumers, they also could upend macroeconomic policies that have been in place for more than half a century. As Buiter notes, these policies have increased worldwide prosperity and been positive developments for the US.From the Citi economist's note (emphasis ours):"We stress the potential multipliers of changes in the US position on international trade: the US has been the champion of free trade and open borders for decades. A retreat from globalization by the US would likely lead to reciprocal actions from other countries, and reinforce the latest shift towards de- globalization and could be another nail in the coffin of the liberal global economic world order that has supported prosperity since 1948."REUTERS/Kim Kyung-HoonJapanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping.Taking it a step further, Trump already removed the US from the TPP - the landmark free trade agreement that aims to slash tariffs and promote economic growth among 12 nations in the Pacific Rim excluding China.And that could have major implications for the future of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tpp-deal-is-probably-dead-after-trump-victory-in-presidential-election-2016-11">economic and geopolitical order in Asia Pacific</a>, given that the deal was arguably more about the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/will-tpp-pass-shinzo-abe-obama-2016-9">US's long-term position in Asia</a> than about the near-term financial advantages.<h2>Americans want jobs</h2>Mainstream <a href="http://www.igmchicago.org/igm-economic-experts-panel/poll-results?SurveyID=SV_0dfr9yjnDcLh17m">economists generally agree</a> that free trade is <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EffectOfTariff.svg">good for an economy</a> in the long run - even though some people will benefit less, particularly in the short term - while trade-restrictive measures <a href="http://www.investopedia.com/terms/t/tariff.asp?layout=infini&amp;v=5B&amp;orig=1&amp;adtest=5B">hurt consumers</a>.However, some voters across developed economies believe free trade hurts their countries, which is likely a reflection of their personal experiences.In the US, 89% of Americans said they think the loss of US jobs to China is a somewhat or very serious issue, according to Pew Research statistics <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/protectionism-near-term-economic-problems-2016-5">previously cited by</a> Bank of America Merrill Lynch's Ethan Harris and Lisa Berlin.Moreover, only 46% of Americans said they think NAFTA was good for the economy. But it's not just Americans who are skeptical - <a href="http://www.latimes.com/world/asia/la-fi-japan-tpp-20160705-snap-htmlstory.html">Japanese farmers</a>, for example, have been staunchly against the TPP.There's some empirical evidence to back up those grievances. In January, labor economists David Autor, David Dorn, and Gordon Hanson <a href="http://www.nber.org/papers/w21906">published a paper</a> showing that increased trade with China caused some big problems for US workers.From the paper's meaty abstract (emphasis ours):"China's emergence as a great economic power has induced an epochal shift in patterns of world trade. Simultaneously, it has challenged much of the received empirical wisdom about how labor markets adjust to trade shocks. Alongside the heralded consumer benefits of expanded trade are substantial adjustment costs and distributional consequences. ..."Adjustment in local labor markets is remarkably slow, with wages and labor-force participation rates remaining depressed and unemployment rates remaining elevated for at least a full decade after the China trade shock commences."Exposed workers experience greater job churning and reduced lifetime income. At the national level, employment has fallen in US industries more exposed to import competition, as expected, but offsetting employment gains in other industries have yet to materialize."Moreover, most of the economic gains from globalization have been for the middle class in emerging markets - not the middle class in developed markets such as the US.Below is one of the more popular charts illustrating this, from the economist Branko Milanovic, via BAML's Ajay Singh Kapur and Ritesh Samadhiya in June.<a class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/58234488691e8877098b5abe-960/screen_shot_2016-10-27_at_1.58.53_pm.png"></a>BAMLThough Trump has zeroed in on workers' anxieties over job losses, it's important to note that automation has had at least as much of an impact on jobs as trade in recent years. And crucially, automation not only hits manufacturing, but also affects jobs that require advanced degrees, such as neuroradiology."From a political perspective, I don't think the focus on trade is misplaced. It's effective because it has an 'other,'" Alexander Kazan, a strategist at Eurasia Group, <a href="https://twitter.com/EGFound/status/777878805348245504">said in a video</a> for the Eurasia Group Foundation. "When you talk about technology, it's much more amorphous. It's this sense that we all lose. So I think politically it's less effective."<h2>Uncertain future</h2>Ultimately, a lot will depend on how far Trump takes the tariff idea and the response from the countries that face the new taxes.While previous president's used tariffs to try and combat unfair trade practices, a sweeping and public tariff like Trump is considering would likely open the door to a greater response from the countries impacted by the move.Some observers say it's unclear how much anti-trade rhetoric Trump genuinely intends to carry out.
