The <keyword id="19907348" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-investigation-agency" source="keywords">National Investigation Agency</keyword> (<keyword id="19907350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nia" source="keywords">NIA</keyword>) has busted a cross-border smuggling network of arms, ammunition and explosives and arrested a key accused from <keyword id="65591" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mizoram" source="Orion">Mizoram</keyword>, an official said on Saturday. Lalngaihawma, a resident of Mamit area of Mizoram, was nabbed from <keyword id="20212250" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aizwal" source="keywords">Aizwal</keyword> following inputs regarding the operations of a well-organised, large-scale illegal arms and ammunition supply network operating in certain north-eastern states of the country, a spokesperson of the federal agency said. The arrest was made as part of investigation into a case registered by NIA on December 26 last year under various sections of Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Explosive Substances Act and Arms Act, the official said. "The accused, along with others, was engaged in trafficking of arms, ammunition and explosive materials not only in the north-eastern states but also across the border. He was working in collusion with various operatives, including insurgent groups situated across the international border," the spokesperson said. As part of their conspiracy, the official said they had already distributed such terror hardware to various individuals in the country and abroad. "These illicit weapons and explosives are suspected to have been used in violent terrorist acts and criminal activities across different regions," the spokesperson said, adding further investigations to unearth the entire network are in progress.

NIA busts cross-border weapon smuggling network in Mizoram

Aizawl, Jun 6 () Two persons, who had recently returned from New Delhi, tested positive for COVID-19 in Mizoram, taking the total number of cases in the state to 24, an official said on Saturday. The two are from Aizwal district, he said. "They were in quarantine centres and their samples were tested at the Zoram Medical College. The two new patients remain asymptomatic," the official said. With these fresh patients, the number of active COVID-19 cases increased to 23, while a person who tested positive after returning from Amsterdam in March has recovered from the disease. A total of 302 samples were tested on Friday at the ZMC, the official said, adding that the government had received an RT-PCR machine from Manipur. "The new machine has been installed at the ZMC and this will help increase the number of COVID-19 tests in Mizoram," he said. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique is highly sensitive and specific and can deliver a reliable diagnosis as fast as three hours. Aizawl, Jul 5 () Twenty-two more people, including four <keyword id="6362743" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="assam-rifles">Assam Rifles</keyword> personnel and ten NDRF staffers, tested positive for COVID-19 in <keyword id="65591" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mizoram">Mizoram</keyword>, taking the state's tally to 186, an official said on Sunday. Of the fresh cases, 14 were reported from Aizawl district and four each from Siaha and Lawngtlai, he said. "A total of 22 people, including three women, tested positive for the disease in the past 24 hours and all of them have travel history," the health department official said. This is the second-highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases in the state after the first <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> patient was found in Mizoram on March 24, he said. The state had reported the biggest single-day spike of 51 coronavirus cases on June 10. The 10 National Disaster Response Force personnel were stationed at Lungverh, about 17-km from here, while four Assam Rifles men were posted at Zokhawsang in Aizwal. With these new patients, the state now has 56 active cases and 130 people have recovered from the disease. The new patients, aged between 18 and 56, have returned to the state from Assam, Bihar, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Manipur and Jharkhand and they have been in quarantine centres, he said. Assam Rifles personnel, NDRF staffers among 22 new COVID-19 cases in Mizoram

Aizawl, Jun 24 () Three more persons, including two women, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Mizoram, taking the state's tally to 145, an official said on Wednesday. Of the three cases, two were reported from Aizwal district and one from Lunglei, he said. A total of 647 samples were tested at Zoram Medical College (ZMC) and Lunglei civil hospital on Tuesday, and three were found positive for the disease, Dr Pachuau Lalmalsawma, spokesperson of the health department on COVID-19, said. "Of the fresh cases, two had recently come from Delhi and were in institutional quarantine facilities, while a woman was found to have contracted the disease through contact with her father who had tested positive for coronavirus on June 13," he said. Pachuau, who is also the state nodal officer of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), said there is nothing to panic as the woman was placed under home quarantine before she tested positive for the virus. She was admitted to ZMC on Wednesday morning, Lalmalsawma said. Mizoram currently has 126 active cases, while 19 have recovered from the infection. Altogether 11,964 people have so far returned to Mizoram from different parts of the country and abroad in the wake of the lockdown, another official said. Shy Indians who can't ask for condoms at a store are buying it online

New Delhi, Apr 13 () Twenty-five districts across 15 states which had detected COVID-19 infections earlier have contained the spread and reported no new cases in 14 days, the Union Health Ministry said on Monday.The ministry asserted that the government has enough stocks to conduct tests for up to six weeks and over two lakh samples have been tested so far.Addressing a press briefing here, Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said 796 new COVID-19 cases and 35 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 9,152 and deaths 308."Twenty-five districts across 15 states which had reported cases earlier have contained the virus and have not detected new ones in 14 days. This is a positive development," he said.The districts are Gondia (Maharashtra), Raj Nand Gaon (Chhattisgarh), Davangiri (Karnataka), South Goa, Wayanad and Kottayam (Kerala), West Imphal (Manipur), Rajouri (J&amp;K), Aizwal West (Mizoram), Mahe in Puducherry, SBS Nagar in Punjab, Patna, Nalanda and Munger in Bihar, Pratapgarh in Rajasthan, Panipat, Rohtak and Sirsa in Haryana, Pauri Garhwal in Uttrakhand and Bhadradari Kothagudem in Telangana.Agarwal also said that the Core Strategy Group on COVID-19 was working on rapid and economical diagnostics as well as new drugs."The group has been formed, based on a detailed review of COVID-19 research, undertaken by Union Health Minister Harshvardhan along with CSIR and its 38 labs. There is no need to worry. We have enough stocks to conduct tests for six weeks," an ICMR official said at the briefing.The Union Health Ministry informed that 78,000 self-help group members of 27 states have produced 1.96 crore masks under the State Rural Livelihood Missions."Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna package, over 30,000 poor people have been provided financial support of Rs 28,256 crore during the lockdown up to April 10. This includes support of Rs 19.86 crore to Jan Dhan Yojna women account holders who were transferred Rs 9,930 crores. "Under the PM Kisan Yojna, 6.93 crore farmers have been provided support of Rs 13,855 crore. "The implementation of the action plan has started yielding appreciable results in 25 districts across 15 states which reported cases earlier. These districts have no case reported since the last 14 days and constant vigil is being maintained to ensure that no new cases may occur in future," he said.The districts are Gondia (Maharashtra), Raj Nand Gaon (Chhattisgarh), Davangiri (Karnataka), South Goa, Wayanad and Kottayam (Kerala), West Imphal (Manipur), Rajouri (J&amp;K), Aizwal West (Mizoram), Mahe in Puducherry, SBS Nagar in Punjab, Patna, Nalanda and Munger in Bihar, Pratapgarh in Rajasthan, Panipat, Rohtak and Sirsa in Haryana, Pauri Garhwal in Uttrakhand and Bhadradari Kothagudem in Telangana. Commenting over a recently published study which stated that administration of antiviral drug Remdesivir may reduce risk of death in critically ill coronavirus patients, Head of Epidemiology and Communicable diseases at Indian COuncil of Medical Research, Raman R Gangakhedkar said the drug which was used against Ebola virus, may affect the reproduction of the virus. "Recently reported study on use of Remdesivir for COVID-19 treatment is not a clinical trial, but an observational study according to which two out of three patients after treatment with the drug may not need ventilator support or their need for oxygen support may reduce. "We will come to know of further developments through the WHO Solidarity Trial, which has an arm looking into this," he said.He further said Remdesivir, developed by Gilead Sciences Inc, is not presently available in the country and the government is working to see if any pharmaceutical company can manufacture it.Responding to a report of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention which stated that coronavirus can spread through shoe soles, Gangakhedkar said more evidence and research is required to conclude that. "We have to see the strength of the evidence...to say that it has been transmitted via shoe soles will need a solid evidence and I will not accept it based on one report," he said.He further informed that 2,06,212 tests for COVID-19 have been conducted so far, adding that 14,855 tests took place at 156 government labs and 1,913 tests were done at 69 private labs on Sunday. "The CSIR laboratories are working in close partnership with major private sector industries, PSUs, MSME working on digital and molecular surveillance, rapid and economical diagnostics, new drugs/repurposing of drugs and associated production processes and hospital assistive devices and PPEs among others," he said.Under State Rural Livelihood Missions (SRLMs) across 27 states, 1.96 crore masks have been produced by 78,373 self-help group members, Agarwal said, adding the National Cadet Corps (NCC) volunteer cadets are helping civil administration under 'Exercise NCC Yogdaan'. As on April 10, under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package, more than 30 crore poor people have received financial assistance of Rs 28,256 crore to protect them from the impact of lockdown due to COVID-19, he said. As many as 19.86 crore women account holders of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana have received Rs 9,930 crore while under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), 6.93 crore farmers have received Rs 13,855 crore.On instances of medical professionals contracting coronavirus infection, Agarwal said in majority of the cases, doctors who contracted the disease subsequently infected people associated with them during their regular infections, and were not on COVID-19 duty. India has signed an $80 million loan agreement with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Asian+Development+Bank">Asian Development Bank</a> to improve the infrastructure in two Northeastern state capital cities. 
 
The loan is the third tranche of a $200 million financing facility under the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=North+Eastern+Region">North Eastern Region</a> Capital cities Development Investment Programme. 
 
The money will be used in water supply, solid waste management and sanitation in Agartala and Aizwal. 
 
It will also support urban reforms, benefiting nearly a million people in the two cities. 
 
Previous tranches have provided assistance to five other cities in the Northeast—Shillong (Meghalaya), Aizawl (Mizoram), Kohima ( Nagaland), Gangtok ( Sikkim) and Agartala (Tripura).
