Tejas has applied for a PLI application under the telecom equipment category, the company mentioned in its latest investor call. The government has so far approved a ₹12,195-crore PLI scheme for telecom gear manufacturing in India. The PLI scheme for telecom gear will cover manufacturing of equipment such as core transmission products, 4G, 5G radio access network and other wireless gear. Under the PLI scheme for telecom equipment, the government will give 4-6 per cent incentive to eligible companies on incremental sales of manufactured goods for five years. This telecom equipment maker is up six fold in one year while waiting for production linked incentives

Telecom giant <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> has entered into an agreement with Nokia Networks to expand its <keyword id="122479" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G">4G</keyword> presence in six new circles. Under the agreement, Nokia will be responsible for expansion of Airtel’s 4G presence using the former’s radio network. 
	 
	With the deal signed, users can expect to witness super-fast mobile broadband services in the six circles. It should be noted that Nokia is already a supplier of TD-LTE network to Airtel, and will also deploy TD-LTE on the 2300MHz in 2 other circles. 
	 
	“With our commitment to build an efficient Internet eco-system in India, we continue to introduce new technologies and strengthen our existing capabilities. Having already launched the high-speed 4G services across four circles of India, we are now looking at extending this enriching high-speed broadband experience to new circles on 1800MHz band. Our association with Nokia Networks will help us support our vision and provide a superior 4G network,” said Abhay Savargaonkar, chief technology officer of Bharti Airtel. 
	 
	Commenting on the pact, Sandeep Girotra, Vice President and Head of India Region, Nokia Networks, noted, “We are happy to expand our TD-LTE footprint with Bharti and partner with them to deploy India’s first FDD-LTE in six new circles. Our rich experience gained in deploying FDD-LTE and TD-LTE to operators around the globe will ensure a fast and smooth network rollout. On top of that, our Flexi Zone solution will ensure the best possible LTE performance even in dense areas.” 
	 
	Under the deal, Airtel will get cloud-ready network management system, Net Act, for effective and consolidated monitoring and optimization of the LTE network as well as services such as network planning and optimization, network implementation.

Bharti Enters Into Agreement With Nokia To
Expand 4G Presence Across Six Circles

New Delhi, Jan 15 () Telecom operators Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea have submitted their applications for 5G trials, industry sources said.
 Airtel has joined hands with Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson and Nokia for 5G trials in the country, while Jio has partnered Samsung, sources said. 
 Vodafone Idea has also filed its application for 5G trials and the company has partnered Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson and Nokia for the same, the sources added.
 E-mails sent to Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea remained unanswered.
 Last month, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had said the government will allocate airwaves to all telecom service providers for conducting trials of super-fast speed 5G network. India will not bar any equipment suppliers in the upcoming trials for 5G. 
 The stance had spelt relief for Chinese telecom gear maker Huawei, which rivals western equipment makers such as Ericsson and is facing curbs in the US.
 Many countries, however, have allowed telecom service providers to use Chinese gears. Now, India has also indicated its unwillingness to keep any company out of 5G trials.
 Huawei India CEO Jay Chen had earlier stated the company firmly believes that only technology innovations and high-quality networks will be the key to rejuvenating Indian telecom industry.
 "We have our full confidence in the Modi government to drive 5G in India. We have our full confidence in Indian government and industry to partner with best technology for India's own long-term benefit and also for cross-industry development," Chen had recently said.
 The 5G trials are widely-expected to begin between January and March.
 When contacted, Rajan Mathews, Director General of industry body Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI) said, "We are pleased that Department of Telecom (DoT) is progressing ahead with the 5G trials to ensure the implementation of National Digital Communications Policy." MBI RVK

New Delhi, May 13 () Airtel Africa on Wednesday posted 13 per cent drop in net profit for March quarter at USD 77 million (nearly Rs 581 crore) and said it would be difficult to precisely forecast the impact of COVID-19 on customers and business, since the spread of coronavirus in Africa has lagged the rest of the world.The company, in a statement, however emphasised that it is entering "this period of increased volatility" on a strong financial footing and its view on the medium-term opportunities across its footprint has not changed, as markets will continue to benefit from strong population growth and need for increased connectivity and financial inclusion.Airtel Africa's net profit for the just ended quarter came in at USD 77 million, 12.8 per cent lower compared to the year-ago period when seen on reported currency basis and 6.2 per cent lower in constant currency terms.The difference between reported currency and constant currency growth rates is due to currency movements with reference tothe US dollar rate.Profit attributable to parent company shareholders stood at USD 65 million (over Rs 489 crore), almost 22 per cent lower than the year-ago period.The revenue for March quarter which included income from voice, data, mobile money, and other revenue was 15.1 per cent higher (almost 18 per cent higher in constant currency terms) year-on-year at USD 899 million (over Rs 6,700 crore).The company noted that more recently, the markets where it operates have begun to be impacted by COVID-19 and the related actions that governments have implemented to reduce the risk of the contagion. The company's priority in such times has been to keep employees, suppliers and customers safe while supporting communities.Raghunath Mandava, chief executive officer of Airtel Africa said, "telecoms businesses provide strategically essential services to ensure the functioning of economies and communities and are, therefore, more resilient compared to some other sectors". In Africa, the spread of the COVID-19 has lagged the rest of the world and, therefore, it is difficult to precisely forecast what the impact of this will be on customers and business, he added. "However, our performance during the month of April has been resilient as the business continued to deliver constant currency revenue growth, although at a lower rate," he said.The company enters this period of increased volatility in a strong financial position and its view on the medium-term opportunities across its footprint has not changed, as these markets will continue to benefit from strong population growth and the need for increased connectivity and financial inclusion, he added.For the year ended March 2020, profit after tax stood at USD 408 million (Rs 3,076 crore), 4.4 per cent lower than the previous year. The revenue at USD 3,422 million (Rs 25,767 crore) for FY20 was 11.2 per cent higher than last year.Its customer base was up 11.9 per cent to 110.6 million."These results also demonstrate the strength and resilience of our business and the effectiveness of our strategy – with all three business services, voice, data and mobile money, contributing to revenue growth. "We have also continued to invest in future growth opportunities as we expanded our distribution, modernised and expanded our network with 65 per cent of sites now on 4G, acquired new spectrum in Nigeria, Tanzania, Malawi and Chad, and entered into strategic partnerships in our mobile money business," Mandava said.  As per this agreement, <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> is speeding up its system development and increasing 4G abilities to counter the danger from <keyword id="1543410" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio-Infocomm">Reliance Jio Infocomm</keyword>, say analyts. 
 The new concurrence with Nokia will see <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> convey 4G technology in three new circles of Gujarat, <keyword id="30033" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bihar">Bihar</keyword>, and UP (East). Both Nokia and Airtel have still not shared the value of the contract. The approximate value, though, was told to be around $500 million by a person familiar with the development. 
 
The new deployment will allow Airtel to provide improved coverage and faster mobile internet access, while laying the foundation for the delivery of enhanced video services and other on demand applications. 
 
"We are pleased to continue to leverage Nokia's leading radio access technology and services expertise to expand 4G capacity and coverage and increase the quality of service for subscribers,” Airtel said in a statement. 
 
Nokia also said that under this contract, it will be expaaniding Airtel’s 3G network in eight of the territories as part of this roll out and modernization of legacy 2G base stations. 
 
"We have a long history of working with Bharti Airtel and with this latest agreement we have become the largest supplier of 4G for the company. 
 
The 4G roll out uses Nokia's radio access with Single RAN tech for FDDLTE and TD-LTE. The gear vendor said it will provide professional services including network integration and network planning and optimization.

Airtel signs a 4G contract worth $500 million with Nokia

KOLKATA: Telecom engineers and fibre specialists at <keyword id="147780" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vedanta-group">Vedanta Group</keyword> company Sterlite Technologies are finalising the ‘proof of concept’ of a close variant of the ‘<keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> Fibre’ project to transform the urban home broadband experience in India’s top 20 cities and, in turn, boost high-speed internet penetration. 
 
But unlike the US search giant, which will directly take its ultrafast fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) drive across US cities, Sterlite will deliver super-fast fibre broadband connectivity at 20 to 50 Mbps speeds to urban homes through partner mobile operators. 
 “We will shortly showcase our FTTH broadband technology blueprint to <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> and <keyword id="6359475" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Teleservices">Tata Teleservices</keyword> to line up the first wave of partnerships,” Sterlite Technologies CEO Anand Agarwal told ET. The company is initially looking to hook up a million homes by 2016 across Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chennai. 
 “Sterlite’s faster home <keyword id="2528457" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="broadband-model">broadband model</keyword> has parallels with the Google Fibre project as the network and services to end consumers would be similar, but company roles will be different as we plan to work with telcos as catalyst-cumsystem integrators to create a pan-India urban broadband network, unlike Google, which will directly serve US consumers as an internet service provider,” said Agarwal. 
 
Its plan to partner with telcos comes at a time when mobile operators are increasingly focusing on data revenues to fuel future growth. 
 “A faster fibre broadband option along the lines of a ‘Google Fibre’ can be handy for incumbents Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword>, Vodafone India or <keyword id="6354924" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Idea-Cellular">Idea Cellular</keyword>, which are known to be cherry picking lucrative data customers in urban zones in anticipation of intense competition from Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio Infocomm, which is reckoned to launch its 4G voice and data services by March next year,” a Mumbaibased sector analyst said, requesting anonymity. 
 At present, Google’s ultra-fast fibre internet service is reportedly available in <keyword id="131662" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kansas-City">Kansas City</keyword> and Provo, Utah, and will be expanded soon to Austin, Texas. According to international news reports, Google plans to take its faster home broadband service to some 34 US cities shortly. 
 
Elaborating on Sterlite’s fibre broadband model, Agarwal said the company would deliver last mile broadband connectivity to an urban home by plugging its FTTH network to the nearest point of interconnect (PoI) of a partner mobile operator, which could be an exchange or base station. 
 
Agarwal, however, agreed that Sterlite’s FTTH network expansion would hinge on telco demand for using its fibre-to-home technology. “We will ink revenue-sharing pacts with telco partners only after jointly assessing whether a particular urban neighbourhood is ready for fibre,” he said. 
 
Under its build-to-demand approach, the company will extend last mile fibre optic internet connectivity to individual homes and residential high rises only after “it is assured of adequate demand for faster broadband services at the consumer end”. 
 
Incidentally, Sterlite Technologies is a key optic fibre cable supplier for the Rs 21,000-crore national optic fibre network (NOFN) project that will be take high-speed internet to 2.5 lakh village blocks across the country. It has also secured contracts to supply such cables for a mega telecom network that BSNL is building for the armed forces.

We have seen, on numerous occasions in the past, that when a telecom operator starts giving a service, others follow the suit. It will be a classic build vs buy vs partner conundrum for them. The first two options will have higher turnaround time for rolling out a robust product. Alternatively, Vodafone or Reliance could very well go with a deep-rooted platform, like Gaana, available on the mobile and PC to get hold of a ready-to-use customer base. 
 
This will enable service providers like Idea, Reliance, Aircel and Vodafone to quickly setup their shops. Moreover, this will also reduce the head ache of getting an app or software ready for their customers. By using an existing platform they can readily package and sell it to the subscriber base. 
 Audio suppliers such as Gaana (who has more than 3 million songs, when compared to 1.7 million that Wynk has) has a strong hold in the segment and is catering to large audiences all across India and the globe. So why should one choose the new service <keyword id="2499907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wynk-Music">Wynk Music</keyword> over others? 
 
Well, in our opinion Airtel is not offering anything out-of-the box. The application’s interface is nothing new and boasts of playlist features that we have seen before. Moreover, the audio library is nowhere near the competition. Yes, Airtel might package it as a value added service for its customers in the future. But right now, it is a new service and people are generally apprehensive to try something new. Today’s consumers, at least on the online and mobile platforms, are very educated. They just don’t swing from one app to the other, unless there is a drastic change or a better offering in the new one. They keep on using the tried and tested few.

We're going 5G, the ultimate promise of the Internet is to be delivered by 2020. Or at least that's what the Indian government would have you believe. As countries in the west stride towards a 5G future, the Indian government says it doesn't want to be left behind. But what is this claim based on? Why are we so confident that we'll deploy 5G by 2020? More importantly, Is it even possible? The fact is that despite failing to keep up on 2G, 3G and <keyword id="122479" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G">4G</keyword> deployment, India might actually be well placed to not just catch up but race ahead of the world this time. The rollout of 5G globally has been ahead of its estimated deployment time in a way, agrees Amit Marwah, Head, Customer Marketing and Communication at Nokia. It isn’t any different here. He further adds that most hurdles in moving to 5G in India are regulatory, meaning a properly motivated government can achieve the set milestones. At its current state, mobile connections in Tier I cities in India are already at what is called “4.5G,” which you see as LTE on your phone. "From a purely technical perspective, we have the capability to offer 5G network solutions to Indian carriers by mid-2019, but the government and industry will first need to decide on a mutually convenient timeline to auction 5G airwaves," said Nitin Bansal, Head of Network Solutions, MOAI, at Ericsson.  Technologically Ready... Telcos worldwide have been amping up their 5G preparation and trials have been underway with great enthusiasm. And this time around, India refuses to play catch up. In fact, Amit Marwah, Nokia expects proof of concepts for 5G rollout to begin by the end of the year. The company is amongst the leaders in the race for a 5G future. Others like <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/airtel-huawei-conduct-indias-first-5g-network-test-trial/63043433" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Airtel and Huawei Technologies</a> have already conducted the first successful test of 5G networks at the beginning of this year in India. Base stations shipping from Nokia's Chennai factory are already 5G ready, as are routers and other equipment required for telecom networks. Technology-wise, India is ready. When telcos moved to 4G LTE, they switched from <a href="https://www.digit.in/telecom/understanding-how-calling-works-on-reliance-jio-31607.html" data-type="tilCustomLink">circuit-switched to packet-switched</a> networks. Packet-switched networks are newer and future facing, allowing 5G to be deployed quicker. These networks are run using computer servers instead of physical switches. They also use optical fibre in place of copper cables, which were used on the older circuit-switched networks. These packet-switched networks are at the core of future telecom infrastructure. And with leading telcos offering LTE services, their networks are already there. For instance, Jio has had a completely packet-switched network from day one. Or Not... While we may be ecstatic about India’s readiness for a 5G future, it may well be argued that its predecessor (4G), despite registering tangible growth, is still largely a Tier 1 phenomenon. That poses a very real issue for telcos in the country, and by extension the country itself. 2G has outlived its usefulness, but it still exists in India, as does 3G. These networks are tougher to upgrade because of reasons explained above.

 "To capture the full opportunities of 5G, it will require an evolution of the whole network and not just parts of it. The best way to start would be to build an efficient 4G network and while doing that, modernise the legacy equipment that can only operate on 2G," said Ericsson's Bansal. “It is also important to prepare for automation of 5G operations as the increased opportunities and complexities of the 5G business landscape will require a much higher degree of automation and self-service," he added. Both Marwah and Bansal say that a roadmap for 5G is important . The Indian government has already set up panels for these, and spectrum auctions are next. The primary difference here is, the US plans to start 5G spectrum auctions by the end of 2018, while we're yet to get word on that for India. In fact, telcos have asked for spectrum auctions to be deferred due to financial strain. But consumers still have to wait... A colleague recently asked me why India is talking about 5G when it could be focusing on 4G. And it's true, 4G is yet to live out its life in the country. But then again, business is never truly done for consumer benefits. Businesses have higher spending power than consumers, and service providers go where the money is, especially with emerging technologies. You may have read reports about how 5G will allow you to download movies in seconds. And that's true, but that's only when 5G becomes a mainstream affair. But as Marwah says, 5G initially will help where it can. And that, in essence, will be for enterprises. In October 2017, Thomas Noren, Head of 5G Commercialisation at Ericsson <a href="https://www.ericsson.com/en/press-releases/2017/10/5g-readiness-on-the-rise" data-type="tilCustomLink">said</a> that operators will use 5G “not only in the consumer segment but also with enterprise users and specialised industries”. Latency here means the time taken for data to travel from your phone/car to the required server. With 5G, latency can be as low as 1 millisecond, something Airtel also demonstrated in its test recently. So, where does India stand? Simply put, India is indeed en route to achieving 5G deployment by 2020. But you may not see tangible benefits of the same till at least a few years later. Aruna Sundararajan, Telecom Secretary and Chairman of India's Telecom Commission, recently said that the <keyword id="106128" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Telecom-Policy">National Telecom Policy</keyword> of 2018 is going to include 5G spectrum auctions. These will likely be the 3300-3400Mhz/3400-3600MHz bands, as mentioned by Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/company/corporate-trends/telcos-want-government-to-postpone-5g-spectrum-auctions-till-fy20/articleshow/62841665.cms">earlier</a>. As long as telcos are onboard to buy spectrum and the government works out the right regulations, India is indeed on track to move to 5G by 2020.
