Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio had announced a tariff hike, which was followed by Airtel and Vi. The telcos had announced a tariff hike of up to 25%, which came into effect from July. The three telcos have lost significant subscribers during the July-September quarter. In September 2024, there was a net decline of 5.02 million users in the total subscriber base, taking the total subscribers to 1.153 billion at the end of the month. <h2>Reliance Jio records a huge decline in subscribers</h2>Reliance Jio recorded a decrease of 7.97 million subscribers in September 2024. With this, the telco’s subscriber base has declined from 471.75 million in August to 463.78 million in September 2024. Out of the 463.78 million subscribers, the company’s active subscriber base stood at 444.49 million, which is 95.84%, marking a steady increase in its active subscriber base. Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel has also recorded a significant decline in its subscriber base in September at 1.43 million users. The telco’s subscriber base declined from 384.91 million in August 2024 to 383.48 million in September 2024. The telco continues to enjoy a high active subscriber base. The company's active subscribers stand at 380.68 million users out of its 383.48 million users, which is 99.27% of its total user base, the highest among all the telcos. <h2>Vi continues to bleed subscribers</h2>Vi, which is yet to launch 5G services in the country has once again reported a huge decline in subscribers. The company lost 1.55 million users in September 2024. The company’s subscriber base decreased from 214 million in August 2024 to 212.45 million users in September 2024. Out of the 212.45 million users, the company’s active user base stands at 179.52 million users, which is 84.50%. <h2>BSNL gains subscribers</h2>BSNL, the only telco that did not raise its tariff continues to gain subscribers. The telco recorded a growth of 0.85 million subscribers in September 2024, taking its total subscriber base from 91.05 million users in August 2024 to 91.90 million in September 2024. <h2>MNP requests continue to grow</h2>Mobile number portability (MNP), which allows users to shift from one telecom operator to another, recorded 13.32 million requests during September 2024. With this, the total number of MNP requests received since the introduction of this in November 2010 has reached 1.04 billion. However, the biggest challenge of the last few months for the entire sector, the high levels of attrition, may have peaked, according to Motilal Oswal, another Mumbai-based broking firm. But the easing may not be enough to improve margins yet. “Among Tier I players, EBIT [earnings before interest and taxes] margin will be in a tight (-20 basis points to +40 basis points compared to three months ago) range, although they will see a steep decline v/s 3QFY21 profitability,” a Motilal Oswal report dated January 3 said. Here, if Accenture’s numbers are any sign, its attrition rate declined to 17%, which is still very high compared to other IT players, from 19% just three months earlier. Another factor that may play a significant role in the earnings of these software exporters is the nearly 3% weakening of the rupee during the three months between September and December. A weaker rupee magnifies the numbers for these companies who primarily earn in dollars and other foreign currencies. Airtel partners with Aakash Institute to bring medical and engineering education content to its DTH platform

Amid all the suspense over <keyword id="1699939" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio-Infocomm">Jio Infocomm</keyword> plans and Jio tariff, <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> Chairman <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> may break his silence at the comany’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 1. 
 As per reports, it is likely that <keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> will reveal tariff packages aimed at specific categories of users. 
 Jio will file its tariff plans with the <keyword id="30356" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-Regulatory-Authority-of-India">Telecom Regulatory Authority of India</keyword> (<keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TRAI">TRAI</keyword>), something which even the government has been asking Jio to disclose. 
 
"While Reliance Jio has now opened up the preview offer to almost all the leading smartphone brands which were earlier exclusive to Lyf customers, there will be some special tariff plan for Lyf customers to ensure the handset sales continue and drive volume sales," a source told ET. 
 
Jio can be a gamechanger in the telecom space due to its pricing and offerings. The company has maintained that it will offer services at "substantially lower" rates than rivals. 
 
"Affordability is a key to success of the digital revolution. Jio will make its services accessible and affordable to all consumers," Reliance Industries (RIL), the parent of Jio, said in its annual report for 2015-16. 
 Expecting lowest tariffs by Jio, <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword>, Vodafone India and <keyword id="6354924" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Idea-Cellular">Idea Cellular</keyword> have reduced data tariffs by 67 per cent for prepaid customers.

"Every customer I speak with is clear-eyed about aligning their IT investments to scale with demand. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has created serious concerns about the <keyword id="6354774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mental-health" source="Orion">mental health</keyword> of children and their families, says <keyword id="427133" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UNICEF-report" source="Orion">UNICEF report</keyword> on <keyword id="154477" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mental" source="Orion">mental</keyword> health 'The States of the World's Children 2021'. The report says that around 14 per cent of 15 to 24-year-olds in India, or 1 in 7, have often feeling depressed. Union Health Minister <keyword id="2607815" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mansukh-mandaviya" source="Orion">Mansukh Mandaviya</keyword> on Tuesday released the report here. The report has illustrated in stark terms how events in the wider world can affect the world inside our heads. In the <keyword id="56000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="unicef" source="Orion">UNICEF</keyword> survey across 21 countries, only 41 per cent of young people in India were willing to seek support for mental health problems, compared to an average of 83 per cent for 21 countries. Releasing the report, minister Mandaviya said, "Mental health has widely been discussed in our Sanatan culture and spirituality. The mutual development of mind and body has been explained in our texts. A healthy mind resides in a healthy body. We are very happy that today UNICEF has released a global report on the mental health of children". The Union Minister added further that as the trend of nuclear family instead of joint family has increased in our society, mental health problems have become frequent in children. "Today parents are not able to give enough time to their child, so we need to talk about mental health," he said, and added, "We have been told that around 14 per cent of children worldwide have a mental health problem. It has to be taken seriously." Mandaviya said, "To build a better and developed society, it is necessary to keep monitoring the mental health of children from time to time. For this, arrangements will also have to be made for better mental health of teachers in schools. Because, children trust their teachers the most". Sharing his experience, the minister said that he as the health minister faced mental pressure during the second wave. He continued saying, "People's problems shook me. After that I started doing yoga and cycling in the morning. It is my request to all that you also examine the problems of your mind and work for its betterment. Spend enough time at home with your children. Talk to them in a friendly atmosphere." Children in India seem reticent to seek support for mental stress, according to a survey conducted by UNICEF and Gallup in early 2021 with 20,000 children and adults in 21 countries. Only 41 per cent of young people between 15-24 years of age in India said that it is good to get support for mental health problems, compared to an average of 83 per cent for 21 countries. As per the report, India was the only one of 21 countries where only a minority of young people felt that people experiencing mental health issues should reach out to others. In every other country, a majority of young people (ranging from 56 to 95 per cent) felt that reaching out was the best way to deal with mental health issues. The survey findings, which are previewed in The State of the World's Children 2021, also found that around 14 per cent of 15 to 24-year-olds in India, or 1 in 7, reported often feeling depressed or having little interest in doing things. The proportion ranged from almost one in three in Cameroon, one in seven in India and Bangladesh, to as low as one in ten in Ethiopia and Japan. Across 21 countries, the median was one in five young people. The report notes that as the Covid-19 Pandemic heads into its third year, the impact on children and young people's mental health continues to weigh heavily. Through the pandemic, children have had limited access to support from social services due to lockdown measures. The disruption to routines, education, recreation, as well as concern for family income and health, is leaving many young people feeling afraid, angry, and concerned for their future. According to data from UNESCO, over 286 million children up to grade 6 were out of school in India between 2020-2021. UNICEF's rapid assessment in 2021 found that only 60 per cent could access digital classrooms. Many would not be able to continue their education. The report notes that even before the Covid-19 crisis, children and young people carried the burden of mental health conditions without significant investment in addressing them. According to the latest available estimates, more than 1 in 7 adolescents aged 10-19 is estimated to live with a diagnosed mental disorder globally. Of these, South Asia had the highest numbers of adolescents with mental disorders, according to the report. In India, children with mental health disorders are mostly undiagnosed and hesitant in seeking help or treatment. According to the Indian Journal of Psychiatry in 2019, even before the pandemic, at least 50 million children in India were affected with mental health issues; 80 - 90 per cent have not sought support. Meanwhile, wide gaps persist between mental health needs and mental health funding. India has spent only 0.05 per cent of its health budget annually on mental health, according to Indian Journal of Psychiatry 2017.
