The company on Tuesday (June 17) launched India’s first multiplex on the Partynite Metaverse platform. The 20-screen multiplex — which is a part of Airtel’s video app Xtream — will showcase content portfolios from leading over-the-top (OTT) platforms it has partnered with. A quick scan of the website reveals that Airtel Xstream offers content from OTT platforms like Amazon Prime, Sony Liv and Eros Now. The Xstream multiplex is an extension of Airtel’s Xstream Premium offering, which added two million subscribers within 100 days of its launch. “Airtel’s Xstream multiplex provides a larger-than-life experience, which brings together Web 3.0 apps and immersive storytelling, and an assortment of content from our partners. We all know people’s love for movies and entertainment in India. Through the metaverse, we are looking to tap into a larger audience, giving content enthusiasts an opportunity to sample Airtel’s Xstream Premium offering and, thus, aiding in driving higher adoption,” Shashwat Sharma, director of marketing at Airtel, said in a statement. Airtel’s latest metaverse multiplex will enable viewers to watch samples — such as the first episode or initial minutes — of top original shows and movies. These shows or movies will be in multiple regional languages, besides English and Hindi. Viewers can get complete access upon subscription of a plan, the company added. Airtel Xstream Premium’s multiplex experience is one of the most scalable use case scenarios for the metaverse and can be used for movies, music, live events and premium sports streaming in the future, Partynite’s founder Rajat Ojha said. “Apart from the robust scope, it will also allow social engagement, open up newer methods of content delivery and, of course, provide an immersive experience at the core of it,” he added. Tata Group is once again the biggest brand in India — check out others in top 10

Cinema halls and <keyword id="44160" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="multiplexes">multiplexes</keyword> have been shut since March following the lockdown due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The Gujarat government in its October 1 notification allowed cinema halls to operate from October 15 with 50 per cent capacity while adhering to the standard operating procedures, including <keyword id="8897280" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="social-distancing">social distancing</keyword> and sanitisation. "We (multiplexes in Gujarat) are not starting from tomorrow, as we have not been able to decide the termsof re- running old movies with distributors in Mumbai," <keyword id="10106083" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="gujarat-multiplex-owners">Gujarat Multiplex Owners</keyword>' Association member said Neeraj Ahuja told on Wednesday. "We will be running mostly old movies, most likely from Saturday," he said, adding that distributors of Gujarati films are also not ready to releaseany new movie as of now. "To start with, we will screen one or two Gujarati and Hindi movies and then decide on the future course based on the response," said Ahuja, who is the general manager of <keyword id="10106082" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="essem-entertainment-pvt-ltd">Essem Entertainment Pvt Ltd</keyword>, which runs Wide Angle Multiplexes in Ahmedabad and Mehsana. Films which were released six to eight months back, before the lockdown was imposed, would be screened from Saturday, he said. Multiplexes and cinema owners have decided to strictly follow the SOPs issued by the central and state governments. While online bookings will be encouraged, ticket counters will also operate by adhering to the social distancing norms, he said. Sanitisers will be kept in cinema halls, he said, adding that theatres will be sanitised twice a day and alternate seats will be kept vacant. Ambani is targeting to take this number to over 500 million over the next few months. That would mean Jio will remain an aggressive player in the market and that's bad news for other players like Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Given that RIL is getting additional cash from Aramco and BP, and if it becomes a zero net debt company by March 2021, the company of its size and scale will only have more money to muscle out other players with its aggressive pricing. Despite a strong start to the quarter with Pathaan and Avatar: Way of Water, which continued to do well post its December release, moviegoers shunned the theatres due to a weaker movie line-up in February and March. During the March quarter, PVR Inox widened its net loss to ₹333 crore from a loss of ₹105 crore a year ago. However, revenue rose to ₹1,169 crore from ₹579 crore a year ago. It is worth noting that the results of Q4 FY23 are of the merged PVR Inox entity, while those of Q4 FY22 are only of PVR. As such, the results are not comparable. The PVR Inox was completed in March 2023. “There was considerable volatility in box office quarter-on-quarter. We believe that the 2 major factors that marred the industry in FY23 – underperformance of Hindi films and less number of Hollywood releases,” said Ajay Bijli, managing director, PVR Inox. However, he sounded optimistic about FY24. He expects the two factors that adversely impacted the company’s performance “will both ease out,” even as the company said it plans to open 150-175 more screens in FY24. It currently has 1,689 screens across the country. PVR Inox will also be shutting down 50 screens across the country over the next six months, but the company said this is due to the fact that they are either loss-making or are housed in malls that have reached the end of their life cycle. In afternoon trade on Tuesday, PVR Inox’s shares were down by 2.2% at ₹1,433 apiece. According to a FICCI-EY report on the Indian media and entertainment industry, footfalls increased to 994 million in 2022, but were still significantly lower than the 1.46 billion seen in 2019. “One reason for reduced footfalls was the lower urgency to view a film due to shorter digital-release windows,” the report said. This is immediately visible in the frequency of theatre visits. “Industry discussions indicated that heavy cinemagoers reduced from 2-4 times a month to just once a month, while light visitors (a few times a year) also shrunk,” the FICCI-EY report said. Further lending credence to this is the growth of digital media and its rising share in the total media and entertainment industry revenue pie – according to EY estimates, digital media collections grew to ₹13,200 crore in 2022, increasing its contribution to 27% in 2022 from 16% in 2019. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="The rise of South Indian films" comment="subhead" text="The rise of South Indian films">The rise of South Indian films</cmsannotation> The rise of South Indian films – especially after the success of films like Pushpa, KGF and RRR – has lifted the profile of regional cinemas across the country, even as the language divide is bridged by dubbed releases. “Hindi cinema ceded 17% market share since 2019; South Indian films now command over 50% of box-office revenues, and some South Indian films were released nationally,” the FICCI-EY report said. Some of the South Indian films that saw a nationwide release in FY23 include KGF Chapter 2, Kantara and Sita Ramam. According to the FICCI-EY report, the number of movies that crossed the ₹100 crore box-office collection mark rose to 22 in 2022 – half of these were South Indian films, while only 8 were Hindi films. Of these 8 Hindi films, 2 were dubbed versions of South Indian films. As already mentioned, Hindi movies account for 51% of PVR Inox’s box-office collections as opposed to 34% across the Indian cinema industry. The threat to Jeff Bezos Microsoft's tie-up with Jio will, probably, be the biggest challenge for Jeff Bezos in one of the world's biggest markets, India. Reliance will offer end-to-end digital stack to "enable and empower" small merchants currently at the mercy of other online retail platforms like Amazon and Flipkart (now owned by Walmart). This stack will include a point-of-sale payment device, which could be a $900 billion market, according to Jal Irani, analyst at Edelweiss Financial Services. 6. That leaves Ambani to fight a large under-served market without having to offer deep discounts. Jio will come bundled with most-premium OTT applications. Jio will also release movies on its platforms on the same day as the theatres. Jio Fibre users subscribing for 'forever annual plans' will get an 4K LED television and a 4K set-top box. 8. The difference between Jio mobile and Jio Fibre However, this time Jio does not seem to burn cash offering discounts to win over customers but is betting more on offering more value for a reasonable price. The plans will cost anywhere between ₹700 and ₹10,000 per month. Any voice call on Jio will be free forever.  9. From content creator to content aggregator Jio seems to have changed focus from creating fresh content for its platform to building alliances with other OTT platforms. Ambani also revealed that Jio will be able to offer traditional TV channels to its customers. Earlier this year, RIL acquired controlling stakes in Hathway, Den and GTPL. Together, they give RIL access to 30,000 local cable operators. "We have designed a Jio set top box that will broadcast TV channels, for which the local cable operators will get a steady revenue. This set top box will be sold to all Jio Fibre customers," the RIL chairman said. Premium subscribers of Jio Fibre will also be able to watch newly-released movies at the comfort of their home on the day of their release in the theaters. This will be a huge setback for companies like Inox and PVR as Jio's offering may affect footfalls at multiplexes and box office collections too. 10. More bad news for Vodafone Idea and Airtel Jio's mobile phone services has about 340 million subscribers as of now. Ambani is targeting to take this number to over 500 million over the next few months. That would mean Jio will remain an aggressive player in the market and that's bad news for other players like Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Given that RIL is getting additional cash from Aramco and BP, and if it becomes a zero net debt company by March 2021, the company of its size and scale will only have more money to muscle out other players with its aggressive pricing. Other telcos are already in deep trouble after having fought Jio in the market for nearly three years with higher discounts, funded by higher debt. "Reliance Industries' stock may hit a new high, beating its previous high of about ₹1,400, in 2019 itself," SP Tulsian said. Expect a rally when the market reopens for trade on Tuesday (August 13).
