BI India chatted up with this young and enthusiastic <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=entrepreneur">entrepreneur</a> to know what gets him going. 
 
BI: Your biggest lessons as an <keyword id="6359301" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Entrepreneur">entrepreneur</keyword>. 
Kavin: I think the biggest lesson is you've got to keep your ego in check. I believe the success of a company is directly proportional to the learning curve of the founder-CEO. My learning curve in the last three years has been literally vertical. What did I know about building a messaging app? Nothing. You've to stay ahead of the curve, and the curve is moving so fast that there's less time in figuring out how this stuff works. 
 
Second is you need to have a strong mind. Perseverance is very important. One of the biggest reasons why startups fail is perseverance. Not very long ago Hike was all set to shut down. Back in Jan 2013, this was before we raised our first round of funding. Germany became very big for us, but India was still zero. By March we had 3 million users as targets, and we had zero in India that Jan. We were freaking out. With our back pushed up against the wall we launched talk-time rewards, which incentivized people to get friends on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hike">Hike</a>, and the user-base went from zero to 5 million in 3 months. If we didn't have the determination to make this a success, it would not have happened. 
 
Third is a healthy body and a healthy mind. It's been a very stressful period, the last three years. You go through ups and downs. More downs than ups, and it's very important to be fit to actually stay in a state of mind to make good decisions, even in the worst times. I only have 24 hours a day, I could really use 48 hours. But the only way to expand this is to work out, stay healthy so that your 24 hours feels like 48 hours. 
 
BI: Your father, Sunil Mittal, is a self-made man, and he's had life lessons galore. How often do you go to him for any kind of advice and how often has his advice made any impact in the business you're in? 
Kavin: The simple answer to that is that every great successful entrepreneur has great mentors. I have a mentor who happens to be my father, whose experience in life happens to be tremendous. 
 
BI: Who are the people you look up to in the business world as role models, as people you can emulate and learn from? 
Kavin: You know there's a saying - you're born original don't die a copy. I love that. I think you can borrow from people you look up to, but never try to copy. You got to be your own person. Of course, I've looked up to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Steve+Jobs">Steve Jobs</a> my whole life. I was very inspired by him. There are very few people in the world with five big breakthroughs. 
 
The second one has to be <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Niki+Lauda">Niki Lauda</a>. I'm a big <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Formula+One">Formula On</a>e fan. If you've read the Lauda story, it's a much more real version of the Rush movie. Hats off to the guy, the way he changed the sport, the accidents that he had, the perseverance that he had after that. Came from a very wealthy family, still went his own way. 
 
There are a common set of qualities in these people. They have a very, very clear state of mind and they want to change the world around them. 
 
BI: What are the biggest challenges young entrepreneurs in India face today? 
Kavin: To sum it up in a sentence everybody seems to be looking for a quick fix. Everybody wants to go from start to finish tomorrow. It does not happen. Building businesses and products take time. You'll go through more downs than ups in your life while building a startup. Don't build a company to be successful and famous. If you do that you'll face a quick death. Start a company if you're inspired by an idea. 
 
BI: Are there books that have left an impression on you? 
Kavin: The most recent one is called The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz. He's a great guy. Talks about life as a journey, his startup and so forth. It's like my Bible. 
 
The other one is a book that I've read again for the second time. It's called Zen Mind Beginner's Mind. It stems from the Zen Buddhist philosophy that I personally follow. It's just changed the way I look at the world completely. When you realize the world around you is simply an illusion of your mind, it's a very, very powerful thing. These two books have had the biggest impacts on my life in the last 3 years. 
 
BI: What is the one thing that really makes you happy after a hard day at work? 
Kavin: Sleep *Laughs*. Just getting 7 hours of restful sleep will make you the happiest person on the planet. 
 
BI: Given your sweet tooth, won’t some Rasmalai and Rabri also make you happy *laughs*! 
Kavin: I really like the Magnum Almond. I can go through three or four of them in a day. I avoid them like a plague. You have to build a life that offers you balance. I work out really hard so that I can cheat and eat some Chocolate, and because I eat chocolate I have to work out. It balances itself out in many different ways. You have one life to live. 90 years is not a lot of time, and I've already almost gone through one-third of my life. Time flies by, each year becomes a smaller part of your life. So each year goes by faster. 
 
BI: We read a lot about people like Elon Mask. Where are we lacking in India. Why don't we have people like these? More than 60% of software engineers in the US is Indian! 
Kavin: You can see the first wave of Internet startups in India happening today. There are a lot of people working on ground-breaking technology in this country. More importantly it's the environment, the mindset. In <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Silicon+Valley">Silicon Valley</a> it's OK to have 10 failures. Here you have half a failure and they'll put you in a pit and shame you. You really should see failure in a company as a comma, not a full-stop. You have to allow people to iterate and fail, and that's the only way to grow. 
 
BI: You think the push to startups will only come when we're more open-minded? 
Kavin: I think it's already happening in such a big way. However, there are still people who fear failure. Fearing failure is a good thing as long as it drives and motivates you. It should not be the dominant thing. The pressure of success is so high that that itself can detriment a lot of people to talk about ideas. Hope we can provide inspiration to the next generation of companies. Look at Ritesh Aggarwal from Oyo Rooms for instance, a very smart guy. This is happening and we hopefully will see more of this sooner.

New Delhi, Mar 9 () A full evaluation of the self-assessment done by telcos' for AGR dues could take at least six months, given the multiple years and numerous documents that have to be checked, according to a telecom department source.The government, last week, had asked Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and other telecom companies to pay remaining AGR dues as per the Supreme Court order without further delay. It had written to all telcos asking them to pay balance dues "without delay" and submit detailed bifurcation of payments (explanation of self-assessed amounts), which it said are necessary for proper reconciliation of legitimate AGR dues.A senior telecom department official said that a complete evaluation of the self-assessment done by telecom companies for their AGR dues could take six months as it will require checking scores of documents spread over multiple years."Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has done a detailed audit for the years 2006-07 to 2014-15...Overall, DoT's complete evaluation of the self assessment by telecom companies will take six months," the official said.In all, 16 entities had owed the government Rs 1.47 lakh crore in AGR liabilities -- Rs 92,642 crore in licence fee and another Rs 55,054 crore in outstanding spectrum usage charges. Of the estimated dues that include interest and penalty for late payments, Airtel and Vodafone Idea accounted for about 60 per cent.These dues arose after the Supreme Court, in October last year, upheld the government's position on including revenue from non-core businesses in calculating the annual Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) of telecom companies, a share of which is paid as licence and spectrum fee to the exchequer.The Supreme Court last month rejected a plea by mobile carriers such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea for extension in the payment schedule and asked companies to deposit their past dues for spectrum and licences.Since the February 14 tongue lashing that the Supreme Court gave telecom companies for missing its previous deadline of January 23 to pay past dues as well as the DoT for failing to enforce it, firms and the telecom ministry had been doing separate maths on the actual dues.Beleaguered Vodafone Idea Ltd, on March 6, pegged its total dues to the government at Rs 21,533 crore -- less than half of what the telecom department has estimated, even as the Vodafone CEO indicated keenness to make a "new, good beginning" in India. The company has so far paid Rs 3,500 crore out of the "self-assessed" liability of Rs 21,533 crore, while the Department of Telecommunications estimated its dues to be over Rs 53,000 crore.On a similar self-assessment pattern, Bharti Airtel paid Rs 13,004 crore to the government in two installments. It had also deposited an additional Rs 5,000 crore as an ad-hoc payment to cover any reconciliation differences. Emerging from the meeting which lasted for over 30 minutes, Chandrasekaran declined to comment on the details of his discussion. He later also met Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash.The crucial meeting comes at a time when the government is looking to issue a detailed notice to Tatas for paying only Rs 2,197 crore as full and final settlement, whereas the government's calculation put Tata Teleservices' dues at about Rs 14,000 crore. A senior government official asserted that the telecom department is not convinced with the company's dues assessment. The 'test check' will be done for any one year (of telcos' dues) to examine the deviation between telecom companies' assessment and the government calculation of AGR liabilities.Amid a deepening crisis in the telecom sector, the government is looking to strike a balance between complying with the Supreme Court order on statutory dues, ensuring the health of the sector and safeguarding consumer interest. Reliance Jio has launched the JioPOS Lite app on Google Play store, from where a customer can download it and start recharging the phone of any subscriber on its network. "There is a joining fee of Rs 1,000 but the company has waived it off as an introductory offer. Jio customers downloading this app will have to load a minimum of Rs 1,000 for the first time and thereafter they can load recharge for sale for a minimum value of Rs 200," a source told . The app has recorded over 5 lakh downloads till date. The source said this will give Jio customers a comfortable option to get their phones recharged even if shops are not opened during the lockdown period. The government has extended the lockdown period till May 3 to check the spread of the coronavirus. Private telecom operators had earlier extended the validity of prepaid accounts till April 17 to support people at the bottom of the pyramid stay connected during the lockdown. Vodafone Idea had announced extension of validity on prepaid plans availed by low-income customers using feature phones till April 17 and Rs 10 talktime credit. Bharti Airtel too had offered extension in the validity period of over 8 crore pre-paid connections until April 17 as well as credited Rs 10 talktime in these accounts. Reliance Jio had also offered its JioPhone users 100 minutes of free talktime and 100 free SMSes till April 17, while their incoming calls would continue even after the validity of their pre-paid vouchers. State-owned telecom operators BSNL and MTNL will extend the validity period of their prepaid mobile services till April 20 and offer Rs 10 additional talktime even after zero balance. Telecom body COAI pegged the value of benefits announced by telcos for low-income users at over Rs 600 crore and said the government should support further extension of benefits through universal service obligation fund where more than Rs 51,500 crore has been lying unused. While most platforms were burning cash to grow GMV, like Shahrukh said in DDLJ, we took the longer route. We brought sellers, and asked them to pay for the marketing rather than us paying for it. 
 
We didn’t spend more than a couple of hundred million dollars building the marketplace. The money we’re making is the best ROI in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=e-commerce">e-commerce</a> industry.

How on earth can you give cashback on everything, and yet be profitable? 
We have a marketing fee for retailers. That’s anything from 4-15%. 
 
It’s our choice if we burn it, or give it back to the customer as cashback. There is always a space for us to step in if merchant’s not discounting, but that’s rare. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Clothing">Clothing</a> sells at 45-50% margin. The merchant, even after 15% cashback, can have a margin as high as 35%, and if they sell in bulk, they get an additional 5-10% as cashback. 
 
As per unit economics, there is always money available as cashback. Also, we don’t offer free shipping. 
 
Will you ever buy your own warehouses if you’re not buying your own inventory? 
We have third party logistics partners like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Blue+Dart">Blue Dart</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FedEx">FedEx</a>, and others. Today we have 13 warehouses across the country for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Paytm">Paytm</a> merchants. They can stock their inventory in any of these warehouses, and it’ll live sync with our platform. 
 
We’ll never buy warehouses, we’ll always have partners. 
 
Some of the products don’t have warranty information! 
We’ve started working on brand authorization. 
 
A seller can only sell, say electronics if there is green signal from the brand. There is an authorized brand seller badge. You can’t list a product if you’re not selling authentic products. 
 
Fraud Buyers 
You’ve heard many of horror cases already. We’ve handed many to the police. 
 
We do a sanity check now. Also, to let you in on a secret, we’ve introduced a buyer rating. That will determine whether you’ll be able to shop on our platform or not. I learnt this from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Travis">Travis</a> (CEO, Uber). 
 
If you topup Rs. 10k in your Wallet, and get Rs. 2.5k in cashback, you’ve to give KYC to get that cashback immediately. Otherwise there’s a month-long waiting period. 
 
We’ve solved that too. 
The Government of India has introduced the Wallet as a means for financial inclusion. People with up to Rs. 10k in their wallet can just verify e-mail, phone number and offer minimal KYC. Beyond Rs. 10k in the wallet means you’ll have to do full KYC. That’s a tedious procedure. 
 
In that case we’ll send that cashback directly to your bank acc via NEFT. 
 
That affects our margins, but customer satisfaction is also something. 
 
Why is cashback paid after shipment and not before shipment? 
They are people who try to cheat the system. 
 
They place the order, cancel it before shipment, and spend the cashback before you can take any action. 
 
Why no <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Airtel">Airtel</a> offers on <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword>? 
Airtel has decided its offers won’t be available anywhere other than their official website. 
 
Basically, they think others will hijack their business. 
 
Why is Paytm not in Hindi, or other Indic languages? 
The Indian shopper isn’t sure what he should search for. 
 
‘iPhone’ might become ‘AiPhone’ in Hindi, and that messes with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Google">Google</a>’s global search algorithm.
