<ul><li>Airtel and Amazon Web Services (AWS) has signed a multi-year strategic collaboration agreement to offer cloud solutions to Airtel’s clients. </li><li>The new Airtel-AWS deal will face off against the existing Jio-Microsoft partnership in the Indian market. </li><li>While Airtel and Jio battle for telecom supremacy, AWS and Microsoft are looking for ways to keep on top of the cloud market with data storage demands set to surge once 5G comes into play. </li></ul>Airtel is teaming up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in a strategic collaboration agreement to bring in more cloud services for the enterprise side of its solutions in India. The tie-up will also take on the existing Jio-Microsoft partnership which has the Microsoft Azure cloud platform at the centre of it. With Vodafone tracking third, Airtel and Reliance Jio caught in a battle for telecom supremacy. Subscribers and the average return per user (ARPU) gauge the wide availability of a network, enterprise businesses are where the margins are better. And, the cloud market is expected to be worth nearly $8 billion in another three years, according to <a href="https://www.consultancy.in/news/2695/indias-public-cloud-market-could-reach-8-billion-by-2023">Gartner</a>. The surge could happen even sooner with the demand for cloud seeing acceleration amid the coronavirus pandemic as more businesses look for a way to help their employees work from home. It’s not just the telecom companies who are caught in a face-off but also the cloud providers. AWS, Microsoft and Google are the top three cloud providers in India, with AWS leading the pack. Where Airtel is using AWS to have public, private and hybrid cloud options — AWS benefits as Airtel ensures that it doesn’t fall behind in a market where Microsoft has a partnership with the telecom that has the most subscribers and is expected to grow even further. Airtel already has its own Airtel Cloud platform but it will now be integrating AWS to develop new products within its portfolio. It already has around 2,500 large enterprises and more than a million small and medium enterprises (SMEs) clients in its kitty. Setting the stage for 5G Cloud partnership will also have a bigger role to play once the 5G network is announced in India. Connecting the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, milliseconds making a difference in productivity and the sheer amount of data will need a reliable and customisable space in the cloud. Jio has already said that it is 5G ready even as we await an announcement on 5G auction from the government. Airtel has made no such statement yet but it did showcase its 5G solutions at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) earlier this year, an indicator that the company has plans to make its own bid for 5G airwaves. Last month, Bharti Airtel also picked up a $235 million investment from the US-based Carlyle Group in its data centre business, Nxtra, for a 25% stake. Nxtra has 10 large data centres across the country and 120 edge data centres. Airtel-Amazon team up to take on Jio-Microsoft in the battle for India’s cloud market

Seoul, <keyword id="141985" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SK-Telecom">SK Telecom</keyword>, which is <keyword id="5565" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="South-Korea">South Korea</keyword>'s top wireless provider, said on Thursday it has partnered with <keyword id="141088" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Web-Services">Amazon Web Services</keyword> (AWS) to launch the country's first 5G edge cloud service. The business-targeted service, named SKT 5GX Edge, provides users ultra-low latency for data-intensive services by connecting to <keyword id="10487122" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="aws-wavelength-zones">AWS Wavelength Zones</keyword> installed in SK Telecom's telecommunications offices, making it unnecessary for traffic to go through regional aggregation sites, according to the <keyword id="345443" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Carrier">carrier</keyword>. SK Telecom said it expects SKT 5GX Edge to improve services such as video streaming, games and machine learning, reports Yonhap news agency. The mobile carrier said it has worked with AWS since February this year, while also collaborating with 20 other companies to test the service, such as with food delivery giant <keyword id="10487121" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="woowa-brothers-corp-">Woowa Brothers Corp.</keyword> for an autonomous food delivery robot. The two companies have set up infrastructure for the service in the central city of Daejeon, 140 kms south of Seoul, and plan to expand into the country's capital and other areas next year. Google, Microsoft, Apple and many others are hiring for various IT roles in India —   data scientists and cloud architects in high demand

<ul><li>The institutional food-tech company, HungerBox, is behind the cafeterias in most white-collar companies in India.</li><li>In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, co-founder and CEO Sandipan Mitra explains how digital cafeterias are now a necessity for companies to use — not just a vanity product.</li><li>He explains how going for lunch at some of the big wig companies is going to change as their new cafeteria management solution kicks into gear starting today, May 19.</li></ul>If you’re wondering what going back to work is going to be like after the coronavirus lockdown lifts, food is probably not too far from your mind. HungerBox, an institutional food-tech company, caters to some of the biggest white-collar private sector employers in India is probably going to be the company behind some of the changes you may see in your cafeterias. In an exclusive interview with Business Insider India, co-founder and CEO of HungerBox Sandipan Mitra explains how the company is helping some of the big wigs in the corporate world ensure that their cafeterias are COVID same and how menus are going to change. “Ten out of 11 of India’s largest white-collar private sector employers are our clients today, In total, 126 of the largest corporates in India are our clients. Through them, we manage over 550 cafeterias across more than 20 cities,” he said. <div type="image" title="sandipan mitra_edited" msid="75820291" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Co-founder and CEO of HungerBox, Sandipan Mitra&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> During the lockdown, HungerBox has seen a 50% increase in clients — with higher demand for small and mid-sized companies. “This is now a necessity, not just a vanity platform. Not just in the corporate world but food courts and malls — we are even in discussion with movie theatres,” said Mitra. He said that HungerBox is 3.5 times larger than their closet competitors, like Zomato Food at Work or GoKhaana. Going for lunch in the post-COVID world There are three main differences that employees are going to have to face as they trickle back into offices. The first is that cafeterias are going to use a shift system to ensure social distancing and avoid overcrowding. “We build AI and ML algorithms on our platform that ensure that — say like if say a cafeteria has 500 seats — at any given point of time, only 250 will be accessible,” said Mitra. <div type="image" title="Times Internet food court" msid="75820146" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Times Internet food court&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Everyone will be allocated at a particular time. Only once you leave will your colleague get entry. “So at no point of time, is there more than 250 people in the cafeteria,” he added. The second difference will be in the food items. “The entire food palette is undergoing a revamp, all these immunity-enhancing items will be available in the cafes,” said Mitra. The team at HungerBox looked at the Aarogya Setu App and took inputs from other stakeholders, which listed out all the immunity enhancing food items. “Ironically, it indicated all the traditional food items — like turmeric and jeera,” he said. And, if you’re one of the people who orders food directly to your desk, expect the food to be a little less messy. “Parallelly, desk delivery is something that has picked up where food is delivered to your cubicle. So what is delivered at the cubicle, cannot have a lot of gravy, cannot have a lot of liquid items. So we had to change the menus to more drier items,” Mitra explained. <div type="image" title="Food Court at TCS" msid="75820162" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Food Court at TCS&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The last, and probably one of the most important changes, is that paying with cash will no longer be an option. “There are 3.2 lakh currency notes that are exchanged at a cafeteria — a midsize cafeteria — in a month. We have tied up with all contactless payment methods, put it on the app so all employees can pay for the food without using cash. We said that we will not have any more cash transactions,” said Mitra. How do you know that your food is “COVID safe”? HungerBox claims that they were listing out some of the main vulnerabilities in the system two days into the lockdown. Their entire management suite, from start to finish, is aimed at ensuring that the food is prepared in a safe manner, delivered at the right temperatures, and remains contactless on its journey from where it was made till when it reaches your platter. <div type="image" title="Food Court at Wipro" msid="75820183" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Food Court at Wipro&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> “We built an entire product suite where the guys have to upload time-stamped photographs wearing their mask, hand gloves and headgear during the preparation of food and that they wash their hands every half an hour,” explained Mitra. All of it will be uploaded to ensure that there is evidence to back up the claims, so that the administration and the employees don’t have to depend on hearsay. But, won’t most of the people still be working from home? Work-from-home isn’t a new concept, it’s just a necessity of the lockdown. According to Mitra, the end result won’t be more than 10% of employees continuing to work from home once the lockdown lifts — even if some are looking to employ the 50/50 or 25/25 work model. <div type="image" title="Infosys food court" msid="75820194" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Infosys food court&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> “In our projections to our board is that we have assumed that there are going to be 10% people who would permanently not come back due to more flexible work from home opportunities,” he said. Even if there’s 20% attrition in the market, Mitra claims that HungerBox will more than make up for it with its client growth, the platform becoming more relevant and margin will widen. HungerBox is the second venture for Mitra after Just Eat India. Even before Swiggy and Zomato were in the online food delivery system, Just Eat India was already swarming the space. When the smartphone market exploded in 2012, Just Eat India was at its peak. Come April 2015, the platform was sold to FoodPanda in an all-cash transaction. From B2C, Mitra decided to go into the B2B space because he through the institution's food space needed to be redone and evolve through the use of deep technology. That’s when he launched HungerBox in 2016. Turmeric and jeera highlight office lunches in the post-COVID world⁠— spicy details from the caterer to some of India’s biggest corporate cafeterias

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:382px"><div class="image"></div>Citi</div>MAMADOU NDIAYE grew up in Senegal. His parents were "not poor, but not rich". He was fascinated by mathematics, which he studied at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar and then taught for several years in Côte d’Ivoire, saving to pursue his dream of studying in America.
He went to New York, where he worked at Staples, an office-supplies chain, to finance his masters in statistics at Columbia University. A customer, impressed by Mr Ndiaye’s sales advice, suggested that the Senegalese apply for a job with his own employer, IBM. That was 15 years ago. Now Mr Ndiaye is back home, as manager of the office Big Blue opened in Dakar last May.
The office in Senegal is just one sign that IBM believes <keyword id="12925" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Africa">Africa</keyword> will bring in billions. It is no newcomer: it sold its first gear there to South Africa’s railways in 1911 and a mainframe computer to Ghana’s central statistics bureau in 1964. Lately it has been paying special attention to the continent.
In July 2011 it won a ten-year, $1.5 billion contract to provide Bharti Airtel, an Indian mobile-phone company, with information-technology services in 16 African countries. Since mid-2011 it has set up shop in Angola, Mauritius and Tanzania, as well as Senegal. In all, it boasts a presence in more than 20 of Africa’s 54 countries. Last August it opened a research lab in Nairobi, one of only 12 in the world. And between February 5th and 7th Ginni Rometty, its chief executive, and all who report directly to her met dozens of African customers, actual and prospective, in Johannesburg and the Kenyan capital. It was, Mrs Rometty said, the first time the whole top brass had assembled outside New York since she became the boss just over a year ago.
Big Blue may be ahead, but it is not alone. Last month Eric Schmidt, Google’s chairman, spent a week in sub-Saharan cities. He enthused about Nairobi, which, he wrote, "has emerged as a serious tech hub and may become the African leader." Orange, a French mobile operator, and Baidu, China’s answer to Google, recently introduced a jointly branded smartphone browser in Africa and the Middle East. Orange also sponsored this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, a football tournament, in South Africa. (Nigeria won it, beating Burkina Faso in the final on February 10th.)
This month Microsoft, which has offices in 14 African countries, unveiled a smartphone to be sold in several African markets. It is made by China’s Huawei and uses Microsoft’s new operating system.
In Kenya Microsoft intends to bring broadband to places that do not yet have electricity, using solar power and "white spaces", or spare broadcast-television frequencies. Within a year, says Fernando de Sousa, the general manager for Microsoft in Africa, 6,000 people in the Rift Valley will have access to broadband. Similar projects are planned elsewhere. Since October Microsoft has been running "app factories" for programmers in Egypt and South Africa.
Mark Walker of IDC, a research firm, says that in the past three or four years multinational companies have adopted a "completely fresh approach". They have "a lot more skin in the game: investing in local people, so there’s proper knowledge transfer, investing in country offices." Companies are in it for the long term now, rather than quitting after a bad quarter or two.
Africa’s chief attraction is that it has been growing while richer regions have stalled (see chart 1). Its demographic prospects are promising, too. As America, Europe and China age, Africa can expect a bulge of workers in their productive prime. Though skills are in short supply, they are becoming more abundant. According to the McKinsey Global Institute, the consulting firm’s research unit, in 2002 only 32% of Africans had secondary or tertiary education, but by 2020, 48% will have. The continent can call on degree-laden expatriates such as Mr Ndiaye and Uyi Stewart, the Nigerian chief scientist of IBM’s Nairobi lab.
Some countries are better off, more stable or simply keener than others to make the most of IT. Kenya may be keenest. In 2006, frustrated by the slow progress of a regional plan to lay a fibre-optic cable along the east coast of the continent, Kenya negotiated its own link to the United Arab Emirates. The Gulf cable landed in 2009. The regional link, in which Kenya remains a partner, followed the next year.
<h3>The lion’s byte</h3>
Bitange Ndemo, a bigwig in the Ministry of Information and Communications and the man responsible for the cable from the Gulf, says he wants to see a rise in IT’s share of Kenyan GDP from about 5% now to 35% "within a very short period". He hopes for a mighty shift of employment away from agriculture. "But politicians must have the will," Mr Ndemo says.
If they are to create new markets and to profit from them, technology companies have to be on the spot. John Kelly, IBM’s head of research, says that after the firm set up labs in China in 1995 and in India in 1998, "we found that we were getting innovation out of those research labs which could only have occurred in those locations." The Indian lab, for example, produced the "spoken web", for illiterate people with cheap phones.
One of the Nairobi lab’s early challenges is traffic. The city has few traffic lights or cameras; hence the awful congestion. Signals from motorists’ mobile phones can help to track traffic, but planners have few data to work with. IBM’s lab will harness other sources, such as security cameras that are not aimed at the road but capture images of it anyway. IBM will then crunch all the data to help planners control traffic and decide where to build more roads.
The Nairobi lab is expected to earn its keep quickly. The Chinese and Indian labs, Mr Kelly says, took ten years to make a significant contribution technically and commercially. Kenya’s target is five. He says the lab has made a good start, drawing on work by an older sibling in Tokyo to tackle its traffic problem.
In many sectors, such as health care, education and water, as well as traffic, governments are sure to be important customers for IT companies. But private clients matter too, especially in telecoms and finance. The mobile phone, the first computer many Africans will own (see chart 2), is the bridge between the two.
To Westerners, "mobile banking" is a new way of doing something old. To many Africans, it is the obvious way of doing something new. In Kenya M-PESA, a system of transferring money over phones, is an everyday, reliable utility. Equity Bank, a fast-growing bank, most of whose customers have never had an account before, has come of age with mobile technology: its chief executive, James Mwangi, says his customers can use any of its 54 products on the move. For technology companies, all this means a growing demand for many things: reliable connectivity; software; analysis of data on spending, lending and repayment; and data centres.
Technology companies say they are keen to serve smaller businesses too. Microsoft has announced a programme called SME4Afrika, which is intended to bring 1m small and medium-sized enterprises online. Mr de Sousa points out that technology can also draw informal businesses into the formal economy. The ability to use software, computing power and storage online "as a service", paying only for what you need and only when you need it, may put the cost of information technology within the budget of many small African businesses. "The person who invented the cloud did it for Africa," says Mr Ndiaye of IBM in Senegal.
Mr Kelly makes a bolder claim, linking Africa’s emergence to that of "big data". IBM’s answer to how the world can cope with the rising torrent of exabytes is "cognitive computing". Instead of being given detailed instructions, cognitive computers are fed masses of data and use statistical analysis to answer complex questions. Watson, IBM’s first of this kind, was clever enough to win "Jeopardy", an American television quiz show, beating human champions hollow. The true purpose of a Watson, however, is not to show off on television but to sift data from radio telescopes or provide medical diagnoses.
<h3>From Jeopardy to epidemiology</h3>
Mr Kelly sees an opportunity "for Africa to move, and move first, to this new era of computing." It can leapfrog straight to the tech frontier, without worrying about adapting old systems to cope with the data it creates. At the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, which will eventually be the new lab’s home, a Kenyan asked Mr Kelly, "Will you bring Watson to Africa?" Yes, he replied, if someone suggests a problem for it to solve. Mr Ndemo spoke up: "Let us bring Watson here in nine months." Africa has plenty of problems. Computing power can help Africans solve them.
