According to an exchange filing, with a growing number of customers transitioning to 5G, Airtel is reallocating its mid-band spectrum to expand 5G services across the 1800, 2100, and 2300 MHz bands nationwide. The re-farming of the mid-band spectrum aims to provide customers with enhanced <keyword id="726530" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="browsing-speeds" source="Orion">browsing speeds</keyword> and improved <keyword id="2551158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indoor-coverage" source="Orion">indoor coverage</keyword>. As data demand escalates, Airtel is accelerating its spectrum re-farming efforts to deliver an exceptional 5G experience to its users. Randeep Sekhon, CTO of Bharti Airtel, remarked, "As more customers pivot to our 5G services, we have re-farmed our mid-band spectrum which was being used for 4G services. With this, we are also ready to launch Stand-alone technology. This will mean that the <keyword id="2365216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel-network" source="Orion">Airtel network</keyword> will be the first network in India to run on both stand-alone and non-standalone modes allowing us to deliver the best experience in the market." Airtel has successfully piloted the switch between standalone mode (SA) and non-standalone mode (NSA) modes on its 5G network in select circles, including Rewari, Chennai, and Bhubaneswar, with encouraging results. This capability will enable Airtel to introduce new innovative applications, services, and solutions through open APIs, differentiated connectivity, and service-based architecture. In collaboration with smartphone Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Airtel will push NSA and SA combined binaries with carrier aggregation functionality, further enhancing the 5G experience. Over the past year, Airtel has showcased the power of 5G with numerous use cases that have transformed the way customers live and conduct business. According to a report by Counterpoint Research, global 5G smartphone shipments recorded a 20% growth in the first six months of 2024 amid a decline in 5G smartphone prices. <h2>5G smartphone share crosses 50%</h2>For the first time, the share of 5G smartphones in the overall smartphone shipments crossed 50% in the first half of 2024. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113091114" title="Apple iPhone 16 to launch on September 9 – design, specs and everything we know so far" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> “5G handset shipments have been growing steadily and with the increased availability of 5G handsets in the budget segment, the emerging markets have witnessed high growth in this segment,” said Prachir Singh, senior analyst, Counterpoint Research. <h2>India emerges as the second biggest market for 5G smartphones</h2>India has emerged as the second biggest market for 5G smartphones behind <keyword id="19894886" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="China" source="keywords">China</keyword> in the first six months of 2024, overtaking the US. Consumers in emerging markets are looking at 5G handsets as an upgrade to their devices, even in the lower price segments,” Singh added. India recorded the highest growth in 5G smartphone shipments among the top five countries. India’s 5G smartphone shipments increased by 60% from H1 2023 to H1 2024. During the same period, China recorded a 14% growth, while the US recorded a mere 2% growth. Out of the total 5G smartphones shipped globally, 32% were shipped to China, followed by 13% each to India and the US. <h2>Apple leads 5G smartphone shipments</h2>With all of Apple’s smartphones being 5G enabled, the Cupertino tech giant leads the 5G race, accounting for over 25% of 5G smartphone shipments. Samsung comes in second with a 21% share. “ As the democratisation of 5G handsets increases with increasing 5G penetration in lower price segments as well as increasing expansion of 5G networks, this trend will further grow. The ongoing global premiumization trend will further fuel this growth. According to our market outlook, 5G share will cross 57% in 2024 and 65% in 2025,” said Tarun Pathak, research director, Counterpoint Research. India beats the US to emerge as the second-biggest market for 5G smartphones

"There were no fresh bids in the morning session. In Q2 2023, the share of 5G smartphones in shipments was just 49%. The average selling price (ASP) of 5G smartphones has decreased to $293. The shipments to online channels grew by 8% year-on-year to reach 50% in Q2 2024, up from 47% in Q2 2023. Due to severe heatwave conditions in several parts of India, offline channel shipments declined by 2% year-on-year in Q2 2024. Indian smartphone market records 7.2% growth in the first half of 2024, Vivo leads the market in Q2

Although it did not divulge the size of the deal, market watchers say that at BT's valuation of roughly USD 15 billion dollars, the deal could be in the ballpark of USD 4 billion. The shares will be purchased through Bharti Televentures UK, which is wholly-owned by Bharti Global. Bharti Televentures UK has inked an agreement with Altice UK to acquire about 9.99 per cent stake of BT Group's issued capital imminently with the rest about 14.51 per cent of BT's share capital is to be acquired post regulatory clearances. Telecom billionaire Patrick Drahi's Altice UK, the largest shareholder in BT, has been struggling with high debt. "Bharti Global, the international investment arm of Bharti Enterprises, a leading Indian business group with world-class companies in telecoms, digital infrastructure and space communications, has reached an agreement to acquire an interest in 24.5 per cent of the issued share capital of BT Group plc from Altice UK," Bharti said in a release. Bharti hopes the investment will further help create new synergies in the telecom sector between India and UK in the areas of AI and <keyword id="19916120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G" source="keywords">5G</keyword> R&amp;D and core engineering among others, "offering great potential to collaborate on industry best practices and emerging technologies". It is pertinent to mention here that Bharti and BT have a relationship going back more than two decades. In 1997, BT acquired a 21 per cent stake in Bharti Airtel, and hence Bharti's latest move to acquire a 24.5 per cent chunk in the iconic British company marks a defining moment for the Indian telecom conglomerate. Bharti's investment in BT aims to support the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards his vision in elevating and broadening the India-UK ties, the release said. It noted that during the recently concluded visit of UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy to India, the UK-India Technology Security Initiative was announced to expand collaboration in critical and emerging technologies across priority sectors including telecom. Sunil Mittal said: "This investment in BT aims to support the commitment of our Prime Minister towards his vision in elevating and broadening the India-UK ties. Bharti's own record of owning and operating telecom and broadband networks around the world is underpinned by placing customers, digital innovation and operational efficiency at the heart of its business". State-owned <keyword id="19970536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSNL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> will start rolling out <keyword id="21279641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G-services" source="keywords">4G services</keyword> across the country from August, using completely indigenous technology in line with the government's "Atmanirbhar" policy, according to official sources. BSNL officials claimed to have recorded peak speed of 40-45 megabit per second on the 4G network which has been rolled out in the premium spectrum band of 700 megahertz (Mhz) as well as in 2,100 Mhz band during the pilot phase. The company has rolled out 4G services in Punjab using indigenously developed technology by IT company TCS and state-run telecom research organisation C-DoT-led consortium and onboarded around 8 lakh subscribers. "The 4G core developed by C-DoT is performing very well in the BSNL network in Punjab. It was installed in July last year. It takes 12 month to prove the success of such complex technology but the C-DoT core has stabilised within 10 months. BSNL will launch atmanirbhar 4G technology across the country in August," a senior government official, who did not wish to be named, told PTI. The core network is a collection of network hardware, devices, and software that provides fundamental services in a telecommunication network. Telecom regulator <keyword id="19942079" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Trai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Trai">Trai</keyword> in a recent paper explained core as part of a network that offers the functionality of aggregation, call control, switching, authentication, charging, gateway functionality, etc. TCS, Tejas Networks and government-owned ITI have bagged orders worth about Rs 19,000 crore from BSNL for deploying 4G network which is upgradable to 5G. In a recent earnings call, Tejas Networks Executive Director and chief operating officer Arnob Roy said BSNL's mobile network is getting deployed across zones. He said that wherever the C-DOT core is not available on the BSNL network, the equipment is getting integrated to the existing core. "When the C-DOT core gets deployed in those circles, in those zones, they will get parented to the C-DOT core as well. Tejas Networks Limited. This is just a temporary situation where the RAN (radio access network) is deployed and in that zone, the core is not available," Roy said. BSNL is in the process of deploying 1.12 lakh towers for 4G and <keyword id="20041753" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-services" source="keywords">5G services</keyword> across India. "The company has installed over 9,000 towers for 4G service across the country, out of which more than 6,000 are active in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, UP West and Haryana circle. BSNL has been selling 4G capable SIM only for the last 4-5 years. Only those customers who have older SIM will need to get new SIM to experience the service," a BSNL official said.
