Eight of those were in the US, with the other two airports in China. </p><p>Passenger traffic in the top 10 has outpaced 2020 by 51.8%, though it still lags behind 2019 numbers by 29.1%, ACI revealed. Nevertheless, <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> is bouncing back and the industry is optimistic about the continued recovery in 2022, with US airlines including Alaska, Southwest, and JetBlue on track to top 2019 capacity this summer, <a href="https://twitter.com/lesliejosephs/status/1511304069205344256">according to financial services company Cowen</a>.</p><p>"The ACI World passenger traffic rankings tell the story of an encouraging trend of recovery, with most of the recurrent busiest airports pre-COVID-19 back at the top," ACI World director general Luis Felipe de Oliveira said in a press release. "Although we are cautious that recovery could face multiple headwinds, the momentum created by reopening plans by countries could lead to an uptick in travel in the second half of 2022."</p><p>The busiest airports in the world were dominated by domestic traffic, which has led the global travel recovery, according to ACI. The organization uses global customer satisfaction surveys taken from 2021 to 2022 to determine the top airports. </p><p>According to SkyTrax, the surveys, which include over 550 airports worldwide, are the "quality benchmark for the world airport industry" and are "independent of any airport control, influence or input." </p><p>The survey covers things like terminal layout, comfort, seating, WiFi availability, restaurant options, retail vendors, and level of staff service, per the firm.</p><p>Doha's Hamad International Airport held onto its crown this year after being named the top airport in the world in 2021. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/skytrax-revealed-top-20-airports-in-the-world-for-2021-8">Last year was the first time in eight years</a> that Singapore's Changi International Airport was dethroned as the number one airport.</p><p>Among the top 20 airports in the world, there were 10 in Asia and 10 in Europe. Australia's Melbourne International Airport came in at number 26, while only two North American airports made the top 30, including Seattle-Tacoma and Vancouver.</p><p>Overall, 12 US airports managed to crack the top 100 list, while Canada only earned three spots. </p><p>Here's a closer look at the top 20 airports in the world, according to SkyTrax.</p><h2>20. The airport is the gateway to Hong Kong, once serving as one of the largest cargo and passenger airports in the world. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the hub to lose significant traffic, and effectively fall "off the map," <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-04-06/hong-kong-has-fallen-off-map-as-aviation-hub-airline-group-says">Bloomberg reported</a>.</p><p>Despite the low numbers, it still earned the title of best airport with less than two million passengers, according to SkyTrax. The airport serves as a base for Cathay Pacific, Cathay Dragon, Hong Kong <keyword id="11898285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines" source="Orion">Airlines</keyword>, Hong Kong Express Airways, and cargo carrier Air Hong Kong.</p><h2>19. Hyderabad airport bags award for best airport by 'size and region' for 2020

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="31907" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aviation">Aviation</keyword> rating firm <keyword id="156728" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Skytrax">Skytrax</keyword> is adding a new category to its list, the <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> airport rating.</li><li><keyword id="43661" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="airports">Airports</keyword> are being judged on how they are combating the pandemic within their doors with ratings for social distancing enforcement, temperature checks, and cleanliness of public areas. </li><li>Only four airports in Europe have been rated so far but the program aims to expand into Asia, Africa, the Middle East, North America, and South America in the near future. </li></ul><p>Skytrax earlier this year revealed its ranking for the top 100 best airports in the world, a highly competitive list that the firm complies in addition to its airline ratings. But global events have forced a new category for its prestigious ratings, the <a href="https://skytraxratings.com/index-of-covid-19-airport-ratings">COVID-19 Airport Rating</a>.</p><p>Concerns of contracting the virus while traveling have prompted nearly every airport to implement new safety measures as they begin to welcome back travelers. And with <keyword id="52392" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Flying">flying</keyword> schedules slashed in the immediate wake of the pandemic, airports are also fighting to be among the first to receive back their airline partners by ensuring that their airports are safe for passengers. </p><p>The global rating endeavor will see Skytrax survey over 100 international airports and issue stars on a scale from zero to five. Categories include social distancing enforcement, temperature checks, and cleanliness of public areas.</p><p>European airports are the first to be tested, with Skytrax already issuing ratings for some airports in the UK, Spain, France, and Italy, where the virus hit among the hardest on the continent. </p><p>Airports in Asia and the Middle East will begin testing in October while North American and South American airports will be tested from December 2020. African airports will see Skytrax ratings beginning in January 2021, with the firm not listing when Australian and Oceanic airports will be judged. </p><p>Here's which airports are doing the best at combatting the novel coronavirus, so far.</p><h2>London's Heathrow Airport – three stars</h2><div type="image" title="London's Heathrow Airport" height="1666" width="2223" msid="78349147" hostid="261"></div><p>London's primary international gateway is among the lowest-rated airports in Skytrax's current ranking with only three stars. According to the rating firm, "Airports achieving 3-Star have Best Practice systems for cleanliness but do not apply the necessary cleaning and hygiene protocols on a regular or consistent basis."</p><p>On a scale of zero to five stars for each category, Heathrow Airport only earned one five-star rating for requiring visitors to wear face coverings. The next highest rating was two four and a half rating for enhanced terminal airflow and filtering and face mask usage enforced.</p><p>The lowest ratings given to the airport were two three-star ratings for personal protective equipment compliance among security screening staff and monitoring capacity in shops and eateries.  </p><p>Skytrax also rated Heathrow Airport as the 12th best airport in the world during its most recent 2020 ranking.</p><h2>Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport – three stars</h2><div type="image" title="Malaga Airport" height="1666" width="2222" msid="78349149" hostid="261"></div><p>Malaga Airport in southern Spain earned a three-star rating from Skytrax. The only five-star rating the airport received was for requiring that visitors wear face coverings. </p><p>The next highest were four four-star ratings for enhanced terminal airflow and filtering, hand sanitizer availability, hand sanitizer prominence and utility, and temperature checks. The firm also noted that the airport has no COVID-19 testing facilities of personal protective equipment vending machines. </p><p>The airport falls short, according to Skytrax, in providing COVID-19 informational signage, enforcing terminal access rules, enforcing social distancing, cleaning and monitoring washrooms, and cleaning and monitoring food and beverage areas. Each of those categories earned less than three stars. </p><h2>Nice Côte d'Azur Airport – three stars</h2><div type="image" title="Nice Côte d'Azur Airport" height="1665" width="2224" msid="78349152" hostid="261"></div><p>The gateway to the French Riviera and Monaco only achieved three stars from Skytrax in managing the coronavirus pandemic within its doors. Skytrax only issued one five-star rating in its breakdown for the airport requiring face masks to be worn by passengers.</p><p>The next highest was a four-star rating for enhanced terminal airflow and filtering, with the firm noting that the airport has no COVID-19 testing facilities or personal protective equipment vending machines. The airport didn't earn lower than three stars in any category.</p><h2>Rome-Fiumicino International Airport – five stars</h2><div type="image" title="Rome Fiumicino Airport" height="1665" width="2221" msid="78349154" hostid="261"></div><p>The largest airport in Rome is currently among the best airports in the world for handling the coronavirus pandemic with a five-star award from Skytrax. <ul class="summary-list"><li>85 <keyword id="11921290" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airports" source="Orion">airports</keyword> are getting a first installment of $1 billion for terminal upgrades and expansion.</li><li>The <keyword id="11908406" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="biden-administration" source="Orion">Biden administration</keyword>'s infrastructure bill from November included $5 billion for airport projects.</li></ul><p>Some US airports are getting their share in the $5 billion for airport projects <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-signs-infrastructure-law-social-spending-plan-struggles-2021-11">from the infrastructure bill</a> President Joe Biden signed last November.</p><p>The first $1 billion installment of the $5 billion Federal Aviation Administration grant is going to 85 airports, including Denver International Airport and Boston Logan Airport, for upgrades and expansions of terminals and other airport facilities. </p><p>"I don't think anybody could look at airports across America today and say that the existing system and existing levels of funding have been adequate," <keyword id="11894924" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation" source="Orion">Transportation</keyword> Secretary Pete Buttigieg said, according to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-buttigieg-federal-aviation-administration-government-and-politics-6f1100197862bcca7c0f5246625b418a">the Associated Press</a>.</p><p>Airlines are struggling this summer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airline-complaints-skyrocket-amid-flight-cancellations-delays-refunds-lost-baggage-2022-7">as travelers endure</a> flight delays and cancellations.</p><p>Denver International, whose CEO President Biden <a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-airlines-stephen-dickson-federal-aviation-administration-cdac13f551e2caef8ce5b3c82b74b856">plans to nominate</a> to the head of the FAA, received the largest part of the grant, with $60 million to improve its terminal and to replace its bag-handling system. According <a href="https://www.flydenver.com/about">to its website</a>, Denver International, which opened in 1995, is the third-busiest airport in the world, and "generates more than $33.5 billion for the region" a year.</p><p>Boston Logan and Orlando International Airport will each receive $50 million. </p><p>Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. will receive $49.6 million to build a new concourse, and Pittsburgh International Airport will receive $20 million to build a new terminal.</p><p>Detroit and Philadelphia's main airports will each receive over $20 million for restroom renovations.</p><p><a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-buttigieg-federal-aviation-administration-government-and-politics-6f1100197862bcca7c0f5246625b418a">According to the FAA</a>, over 530 airports submitted applications for 658 projects. If all of the projects were accepted, the FAA said it would cost over $14 billion.</p><p>Large-scale airport renovations aren't cheap. One particularly expensive example is LaGuardia Airport in New York, which recently opened its new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-inside-deltas-brand-new-4-billion-terminal-laguardia-airport-2022-6">$4 billion Delta terminal</a> as part of a wider airport overhaul that cost <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/27/nyregion/la-guardia-airport-terminal-completion.html">$8 billion</a>. </p><p>Terminal upgrades are <a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-buttigieg-federal-aviation-administration-government-and-politics-6f1100197862bcca7c0f5246625b418a">usually funded by</a> passenger facility charges, up to $4.50 per flight, which are added onto every ticket.</p><p>The <a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-buttigieg-federal-aviation-administration-government-and-politics-6f1100197862bcca7c0f5246625b418a">AP reported</a> that Buttigieg said spending taxpayer money on airport projects that were previously funded by travelers' fees is okay, because "there is a need out there; taxpayers expect it and want it."</p><p>Ticket taxes could be raised by Congress in order to pay for future airport projects, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-buttigieg-federal-aviation-administration-government-and-politics-6f1100197862bcca7c0f5246625b418a">the AP said</a>. Denver International, Boston Logan, and 83 other airports are getting a combined $1 billion for upgrades and new terminals

<p>Evolutionist and atheist writer Richard Dawkins caused a minor furore this weekend when he complained about not being able <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/richards-dawkins-says-bin-laden-has-won-after-his-honey-is-confiscated-at-airport-security-2013-11">to bring his honey onto a plane in his carry-on luggage</a>. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"Bin Laden has won, in <keyword id="43661" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="airports">airports</keyword> of the world every day," Dawkins tweeted after his honey was thrown away by a security officer.</span></p>
<p>Dawkins' anger struck many as absurd - a 72-year-old man's pain at losing his honey is easy to scoff at, particularly when contrasted with the specter of a terrorism attack on a plane.</p>
<p>But why do we restrict travelers from carrying bottles containing more than 100ml of liquid in the first place? The logic behind this restriction has always seemed flawed.</p>
<p>It all started i<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">n 2006, British intelligence officials discovered a plot to blow up </span><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/11/world/europe/11rules.html?_r=0">airplanes flying from Britain to the U.S</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">. According to reports from the time, the plan revolved around using liquids taken </span><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/11/world/europe/11rules.html?_r=0">onto the plane in hand luggage</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">, using a mixture of </span><a href="http://www.webcitation.org/5v7pCutge">hydrogen peroxide and chapatti flour</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Even in this instance, some claimed that liquid plan would not have been effective. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Writing for the Register, for example, </span><a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/08/17/flying_toilet_terror_labs/?page=2">Thomas C. Greene argued</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> that the mixture</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> was too unstable to mix ahead of time and too complicated to cook up in midair in sufficient quantities to bring down a plane.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Nonetheless, </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">security agencies</span><strong style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </strong><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">reacted swiftly with a restriction that would make this unproven threat slightly more difficult. Rather than bringing on one 400ml container, would-be terrorists would have to bring on four 100ml containers.</span></p>

<p><span>It was, some would conclude, the ultimate in security theater, which is the investment in countermeasures intended to provide the feeling of security without making a significant difference.</span></p>
<p>For some perspective, we emailed Bruce Schneier, a fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet &amp; Society at Harvard Law School and a program fellow at the New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute, who has written widely on the topic.</p>

<p>Schneier pointed us to a story he <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/science/2008/oct/23/bruce-schneier-airport-security">had written for the Guardian in 2008</a> on the pointlessness of a ban that no one takes seriously. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Here's one key passage:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">There are two classes of contraband at <keyword id="90767" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Airport-security">airport security</keyword> checkpoints: the class that will get you in trouble if you try to bring it on an airplane, and the class that will cheerily be taken away from you if you try to bring it on an airplane.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">This difference is important; making security screeners confiscate anything from that second class is a waste of time and doesn't make us any safer.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">In other words, bans on things like guns and bombs are effective because they are taken seriously, leading to interrogations and black marks on one's record. Because there are no consequences to getting caught with liquids, however, determined terrorists could easily try multiple times until they lucked into one of many gaps in airport security <span>(there are plenty of </span><a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/joshbarro/2012/05/02/the-tsas-fake-liquids-rule/">reports of people accidentally taking liquids onto planes out there</a><span>).</span></span></p>
<p><span>As Schneier concluded:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">[T]hose in charge of airport security need to make a choice: either a 4oz bottle of saline is a potential bomb, or it isn't. If it is dangerous, treat is as dangerous and treat anyone who tries to bring one on as potentially dangerous. If it's not dangerous, stop prohibiting it from being taken onto airplanes.</p>
<p><span>So should we get rid of the liquid restrictions entirely?</span></p>
<p><span>Hopefully, a better solution to this difficult problem may be coming soon: Testing for devices that scan </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">specifically for explosive liquids is </span><a href="http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/new-airport-scanners-could-end-ban-on-liquids-1.1469989">reportedly due to begin in January 2014</a>.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Online <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> agency Hopper has unveiled the worst-delayed European <keyword id="11921290" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airports" source="Orion">airports</keyword> so far in July.</li><li>Brussels Airport in Belgium topped the list, while <keyword id="14091400" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="london-heathrow" source="Orion">London Heathrow</keyword> didn't make the top 10.</li></ul><p>The summer travel chaos is not slowing down as airlines and airports continue to struggle with booming passenger volumes.</p><p>On Tuesday, <a href="https://media.hopper.com/research/major-disruption-plaguing-european-airports-during-peak-summer-months">online travel agency Hopper</a> published a study that calculated the percent of delays and cancellations at airports across Europe so far in July. The data, which was collected from flight analytics provider Official Aviation Guide (OAG), covers flights from July 1 to July 9.</p><p>London Heathrow has been struggling to keep up with the high volume of passengers this summer, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/schiphol-airport-amsterdam-photos-security-staff-shortages-europe-flight-2022-6">mostly due to staffing shortages</a>. The problems have gotten so bad that the airport has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heathrow-airport-london-stop-selling-tickets-caps-passengers-travel-chaos-2022-7">capped the number of travelers </a>that can fly out and has asked airlines to stop selling tickets.</p><p><keyword id="12553966" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="amsterdam" source="Orion">Amsterdam</keyword> Airport Schiphol imposed a similar cap for July and August, <a href="https://airwaysmag.com/ams-downsizes-passenger-cap/">according to Airways Magazine</a>, and German carrier <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lufthansa-cancels-flights-labor-staff-shortage-airline-germany-transport-europe-2022-6">Lufthansa canceled 900 flights</a> out of Frankfurt and Munich due to staffing issues.</p><p>Despite the challenges at both airports, neither is one of the top five worst-delayed airports in Europe. Amsterdam sits at number eight, while Heathrow is at number 15, according to Hopper. However, the data is only for the first nine days of July, and should not be viewed as concrete, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-12/worst-airports-in-europe-for-flight-delays-right-now-where-to-fly-instead">according to Bloomberg</a>. </p><p>"On a volume basis, London Heathrow is much larger than most airports, and our ranking is based on percentage of delays not number of people impacted," a Hopper spokesperson told the outlet as context for Heathrow.</p><p>Heathrow has seen a 78% rise in delays compared to the summer of 2019, according to Hopper. On its worst day so far in July, the airport reached 62% of delays, which, on that day, would put it at number eight on the list and likely impact more travelers overall, Bloomberg reported.</p><p>Cote D'Azur Airport in Nice, France, which is the nation's second-busiest airport, handled much fewer passengers than Charles de Gaulle (CDG) International Airport in Paris. <a href="https://centreforaviation.com/news/nice-cote-dazur-airport-recovers-to-90-of-may-2019-pax-levels-in-may-2022-1142175">According to data analytic provider Centre for Aviation</a>, Cote D'Azur saw 1.2 million passengers in May 2022. Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2022/06/16/2464197/0/en/A%C3%A9roports-de-Paris-SA-May-2022-traffic-figures.html#:~:text=In%20May%202022%2C%20Paris%2DCharles,of%20the%20May%202019%20traffic.">CDG saw 5.2 million</a> the same month.</p><p>Bottom line — because more passengers travel out of large airports like Heathrow and Amsterdam, more people could be impacted even if the total delay or cancellation rate is lower than smaller airports. Passengers should expect delays to continue through the rest of the summer and know what to do when things go wrong. </p><p>Fortunately for travelers, the European Union has <a href="https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/index_en.htm">laws in place</a> that protect travelers when their flight is disrupted, including offering compensation. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of AdAirport Holdings Ltd Arun <keyword id="6442005" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bansal" source="Orion">Bansal</keyword> on Wednesday while speaking to ANI stated that <keyword id="76451" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="adani" source="Orion">Adani</keyword> Airports is very ambitious to acquire more airports through government bidding.<br /><br />The Adani <keyword id="6355752" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="airport" source="Orion">Airport</keyword> CEO stated that this is the policy agenda but we are keen to acquire new airports.<br />Bansal spoke exclusively to ANI after Assocham announced the best regional airport awards for Lucknow and Ahmedabad airports.<br /><br />"This is the policy agenda. This needs to see the next round of bidding when the government decides to go and we of course to ambition to try for new acquisitions," Bansal told ANI.<br /><br />"We are very happy to receive these awards and be recognised as the best regional airports in the country for Lucknow and Ahmedabad," he told ANI.<br /><br />Currently, the Adani airport holding company is running 7 airports in the country.<br /><br />However, he shared his belief in the Indian aviation growth industry and said that in a period of five to ten years, 900 million passengers would be flying through Indian airports.<br /><br />"If you really look at the <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>n aviation sector, India will see tremendous growth. If you look at the global growth as passengers, the percentage of the population as compared to India is still fairly low."<br /><br />"Before the <keyword id="8764262" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="covid" source="Orion">Covid</keyword> pandemic, around 300 million passengers flew from Indian airports. This number will grow thrice in the next five to ten years. So there is tremendous potential for growth in the aviation sector in India," said Bansal.<br /><br />He stated that for meeting the growth of passengers, "Airport is playing a significant role in making sure to let the consumer use the facility of the airport," he added.<br /><br />When asked about the problem of congestion at the airports which brings stress to the passengers during their air travel, Bansal said, "We handle congestion issues very well. Of course, the passenger growth at the airports was significant post-Covid because of the demand. Pre-covid we haven't seen any issues of congestion at the airports we have planned. We have investors digitisation at our airports with which we are able to manage the passenger flow.
