Anyone following the rhetoric around <keyword id="107950" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Artificial-Intelligence" source="Orion">artificial intelligence</keyword> in recent years has heard one version or another of the cl<keyword id="6355999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI" source="Orion">ai</keyword>m that AI is inevitable. Common themes are that AI is already here and indispensable, and people who are bearish on it harm themselves. In the business world, AI advocates tell companies and workers that they will fall behind if they fail to integrate generative AI into their operations. In the sciences, AI advocates promise that AI will aid in curing hitherto intractable diseases. In higher education, AI promoters admonish teachers that students must learn how to use AI or risk becoming uncompetitive when it comes time to find a job. In national security, AI's champions say that either the nation invests heavily in AI weaponry, or it will be at a disadvantage against the Chinese and Russians, who are already doing so. The argument across these different domains is essentially the same: The time for AI skepticism has come and gone. The <keyword id="6355118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="technology" source="Orion">technology</keyword> will shape the future, whether you like it or not. You have the choice to learn how to use it or be left out of that future. Anyone trying to stand in the technology's way is as hopeless as the manual weavers who resisted the mechanical looms in the early 19th century. In the past few years, my colleagues and I (Nir Eisikovits, Professor of Philosophy and Director, Applied Ethics Center, UMass Boston) have been studying the ethical questions raised by the widespread adoption of AI, and I believe the inevitability argument is misleading. <h2>History and hindsight</h2> This claim is the most recent version of a deterministic view of technological development. It's the belief that innovations are unstoppable once people start working on them. In other words, some genies don't go back in their bottles. The best you can do is harness them for your good purposes. This deterministic approach to tech has a long history. It's been applied to the influence of the printing press as well as to the rise of automobiles and the infrastructure they require, among other developments. But I believe that when it comes to AI, the technological determinism argument is both exaggerated and oversimplified. <h2>AI in the field(s)</h2> Consider the contention that businesses can't afford to stay out of the AI game. The case has yet to be made that AI is delivering significant productivity gains to the firms that use it. A report in The <keyword id="20856675" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economist" source="keywords">Economist</keyword> in July 2024 suggests that so far, the technology has had almost no economic impact. AI's role in higher education is also still very much an open question. Though universities have, in the past two years, invested heavily in AI-related initiatives, evidence suggests they may have jumped the gun. The technology can serve as an interesting pedagogical tool. For example, creating a Plato chatbot that lets students have a text conversation with a bot posing as Plato is a cool gimmick. However, AI is already starting to displace some of the best tools teachers have for assessment and for developing critical thinking, such as writing assignments. The college essay is going the way of the dinosaurs as more teachers give up on the ability to tell whether their students are writing their papers themselves. What's the cost-benefit argument for giving up on writing, an important and useful traditional skill? In the sciences and medicine, the use of AI seems promising. Its role in understanding the structure of proteins, for example, will likely be significant for curing diseases. The technology is also transforming medical imaging and has been helpful in accelerating the drug discovery process. But the excitement can become exaggerated. AI-based predictions about which cases of COVID-19 would become severe have roundly failed, and doctors rely excessively on the technology's diagnostic ability, often against their own better clinical judgment. And so, even in this area, where the potential is great, AI's ultimate impact is unclear. In national security, the argument for investing in AI development is compelling. Since the stakes can be high, the argument that if the Chinese and the Russians are developing AI-driven autonomous weapons, the United States can't afford to fall behind has real purchase. But a complete surrender to this form of reasoning, though tempting, is likely to lead the <keyword id="19899807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="u-s-" source="keywords">U.S.</keyword> to overlook the disproportionate impact of these systems on nations that are too poor to participate in the AI arms race. The major powers could deploy the technology in conflicts in these nations. And, just as significantly, this argument de-emphasizes the possibility of collaborating with adversaries on limiting military AI systems, favoring arms race over arms control.<h2> One step at a time</h2> Surveying the potential significance and risks of AI in these different domains merits some skepticism about the technology. I believe that AI should be adopted piecemeal and with a nuanced approach rather than subject to sweeping claims of inevitability. In developing this careful take, there are two things to keep in mind: -First, companies and entrepreneurs working on artificial intelligence have an obvious interest in the technology being perceived as inevitable and necessary, since they make a living from its adoption. It's important to pay attention to who is making claims of inevitability, and why. -Second, it's worth taking a lesson from recent history. Over the past 15 years, smartphones and the social media apps that run on them have come to be seen as a fact of life - a technology as transformative as it is inevitable. Then data started emerging about the <keyword id="6354774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mental-health" source="Orion">mental health</keyword> harms they cause teens, especially young girls. School districts across the United States started to ban phones to protect the attention spans and mental health of their students. And some people have reverted to using flip phones as a quality of life change to avoid smartphones. After a long experiment with the mental health of kids, facilitated by claims of technological determinism, Americans changed course. What seemed fixed turned out to be alterable. There is still time to avoid repeating the same mistake with artificial intelligence, which potentially could have larger consequences for society.

Is AI dominance inevitable? A technology ethicist says no, actually

Following a failed merger with <keyword id="20245146" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="JetBlue-Airways" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="JetBlue Airways" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="JetBlue Airways">JetBlue Airways</keyword>, Spirit had been grappling with heavy losses, making it difficult to manage its $3.3 billion debt load that includes $1.1 billion of secured bonds due within the next year, The Wall Street Journal <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/spirit-airlines-in-talks-with-bondholders-over-terms-of-potential-bankruptcy-filing-fdd23fae?st=oS9e7Q&amp;reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink">reported</a> late Thursday. The <keyword id="20376051" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget-airline" source="keywords">budget airline</keyword> is also exploring restructuring options to alleviate some of its financial pressures, though no filing is imminent, the Journal reported. The report pushed the carrier's stock down as much as 36% in premarket trade on Friday. The shares have fallen 86% this year. <keyword id="23550986" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CEO-Ted-Christie" source="keywords">CEO Ted Christie</keyword> said on an August earnings call that Spirit was in talks with advisors and bondholders over its debt. While Spirit faces a turbulent future with a potential Chapter 11 filing, it isn't necessarily a death sentence for the airline. Rather, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/credit-score/what-is-chapter-11-bankruptcy">Chapter 11</a> allows businesses to reorganize their debts while continuing their operations. Other airlines have used the process to stay afloat. Most recently, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scandinavian-airlines-filed-chapter-11-bankruptcy-after-pilot-strike-sas-2022-7">Scandinavian Airlines</a> filed for Chapter 11 in the US in 2022 following a pilot strike. The airline underwent a $3 billion restructuring plan to revise its fleet and raise money, while continuing to operate. The company emerged from bankruptcy in August. In 2005, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-went-bankrupt-bounced-back-successful#delta-air-lines-filed-for-bankruptcy-in-2005-and-spent-a-year-and-a-half-restructuring-3" target="_blank">Delta Air Lines</a> filed for bankruptcy after shedding 6,000 jobs and slashing $1 billion in labor costs. By optimizing its Atlanta hub and increasing its international routes, the company recovered from its financial troubles and remains one of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-and-worst-airlines-in-the-us-according-to-the-points-guy-2024-6" target="_blank">largest airlines</a> in the US. A potential bankruptcy filing could serve as a similar lifeline for Spirit's management of debt and finances. This came as Spirit <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spirit-airlines-ticket-changes-bundled-fares-bags-snacks-premium-seats-2024-7">bumped</a> its ticketing prices in July, shifting away from its ultra-low-cost model to boost revenue after suffering a $143 million loss in the first quarter of this year and a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airlines-spirit-southwest-jetblue-struggle-profit-scrambling-changes-tickets-seats-2024-8">$193 million</a> loss in the second quarter. Jetstar would not pay for accommodation, he said.But it did offer aggrieved passengers two vouchers amounting to $10.70 (16 AUD), which they were only allowed to spend all at once with no change given.<h2 id="94377cb2-ef0f-4b53-b24c-a56b1ba255b5">'Tired and hopeless'</h2>At Los Angeles International Airport, Sarah Patterson experienced a similar disruption.Patterson told BI her flight with Spirit Airlines to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) was delayed by more than two hours on Thursday evening before it was eventually canceled.It took three hours to get her checked luggage back from the airline, she said.On top of the delay, the airline's app was completely unresponsive and they had been told that no rebookings could be made."There's about three flights of people, at least, all in a single line for the Spirit desk, all trying to get rebooked," Patterson said."I have a family vacation I'm supposed to go on on Saturday, so it's pretty brutal," she said.A spokesperson for Spirit told BI that its team is working "as quickly as possible to have everything restored." The company wrote on X Friday that it is currently unable to rebook flights for impacted passengers because of the outage.Jacqualine Ebule was also stuck at LAX after boarding her 11:15 p.m. flight to Washington, D.C. An hour later, they were told to disembark, and at 3:30 a.m., the flight was canceled."We sat on the tarmac for an hour, and they said it was a technical issue with Microsoft," Ebule told BI. "We then had to deplane and everyone has just been sitting around waiting."Calling the whole experience "a hassle" she was thinking of just heading home."People with kids look extremely tired and hopeless," she added.<h2 id="c9ae466d-6ea6-4ba9-a551-18531a175aca">Reverting to manual processes</h2>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/global-it-outage-y2k-24-years-later-crowdstrike-cyber-expert-2024-7">global IT outage</a> is affecting airlines differently depending on their use of Microsoft services for their operations.At Melbourne Airport, Australia, the international airlines Jetstar and Scoot were experiencing ongoing issues, while all other international airlines were processing passengers normally, the airport confirmed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/Melair/status/1814217651834786060">on X</a> on Friday morning.Some airlines resorted to using manual processes to manage the situation.<div type="image" title="A man stands looking at a piece of paper in front of a whiteboard displaying flight information in an airport lounge." height="4032" width="3024" msid="111866981" hostid="261"></div>In Singapore Changi Airport, whiteboards displaying flight numbers were laid out in a terminal 1 lounge.Elsewhere, passengers of Indian airline IndiGo posted images of handwritten boarding passes on social media. Airline passengers face chaos and uncertainty after massive IT outage

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Erin Wright says she was shocked to discover she had been barred from flying American Airlines.</li><li>The airline said she drunkenly "engaged in sexual activity" with a man on a previous flight.</li></ul>Erin Wright was growing anxious.As she tried to check in for her American Airlines flight to her sister's bachelorette party, she kept getting an error message, both on her phone and at a kiosk at the airport. She didn't have any problems when she booked the ticket, so she assumed it was a system error and went to the airline's desk to ask for help."I've flown American a ton," Wright, a 24-year-old whitewater rafting guide based in New Mexico, told Business Insider.The agents made a phone call to fix the check-in issue, but when they hung up, they told Wright they couldn't check her in because American Airlines had barred her from flying on its airline."I was really confused and then obviously started to tear up a little bit," Wright said.She asked the desk agents to tell her why she had been barred from flying on the airline, but they said they could not. The desk agents also said the staffer on the phone told them it was "an issue of internal security" but that Wright should have been aware of why she was banned."I was like, 'Well, I don't, so what do I do?'" Wright said. The agents told her to email the customer relations department. She did that after booking a last-minute flight on a different airline to make it to her sister's bachelorette party on time. She said it cost nearly double the $471.95 flight she booked on American Airlines.Business Insider has viewed all of Wright's emails with the airline. American Airlines did not respond to multiple requests for comment.<h2 id="65506ea2-1fd3-44fe-9f88-ad84b52e706f">Ban or spam?</h2>During the ordeal at the airport, Wright recalled an email she had received in April that she had dismissed as spam at the time."I got this email from American, but it was from some really random email. It had numbers and letters — a very long, strange email and didn't have any contact information or anything in the email either — saying that I was banned," Wright said. "I hadn't done anything. I was like, 'This is just a phishing email.'"Business Insider has seen the email, which contained the subject line "Permanent Loss of Flight Privileges," alerting Wright that she had "violated the passenger code of conduct" during a previous American Airlines flight. The email address included a string of numbers and letters, and the email itself did not list a specific allegation.In the weeks after she was turned away at the airport check-in counter, Wright sent multiple emails to American Airlines, including one threatening legal action.When she didn't get responses, she cold-emailed top executives at the company, including CEO Robert Isom, on a Friday afternoon in July.The next day, she received a refund of $471.95 to cover the original flight cost.By Monday morning, she received an email from a customer relations employee, who told her that she and a male passenger were "placed on the permanent Internal Refuse List after multiple eye-witness reports of the passengers being intoxicated and engaging in sexual activity" during a flight in February.Wright confirmed she was on a flight in February, but there's one glaring problem with the airline's allegation: Wright is a lesbian."I was like, 'Well, I definitely didn't do that, so can we find a way to get this cleared up?'" Wright said. "It's really hard to prove that it wasn't me if they think it was, so I just had to try to be as diligent as I could."<h2 id="f4511349-1ded-41a3-997d-e93b977f6f44">Wright's appeal to the airline</h2>Emails Wright shared with Business Insider show she was placed on American Airlines' "internal refuse list," which the airline can add passengers to at will. It is distinct from the Transportation Security Administration's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/travel-redress-program#:~:text=The%20No%20Fly%20List%20is,the%20FBI's%20Terrorist%20Screening%20Center.">"No Fly List,"</a> which is a list of known or suspected terrorists maintained by the US government.Like all airlines, American Airlines has a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.aa.com/i18n/customer-service/support/conditions-of-carriage.jsp?anchorEvent=false&amp;from=comp_footer">"Conditions of Carriage"</a> contract that passengers agree to abide by when they purchase a ticket. Among the requirements are that passengers "behave appropriately and respectfully with other passengers" and do not "appear intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.""We may not let you fly (temporarily or permanently) for any reason," the airline warns, especially if customers refuse to obey the law or the flight crew.During and following the COVID-19 pandemic, incidents of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-airlines-ceo-unruly-behaviour-assault-flight-attendant-broken-bones-2021-10">violence toward crewmembers</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unruly-flyers-fined-covid-19-pandemic-airlines-travel-2024-9">"unruly passengers" skyrocketed</a> far above pre-pandemic levels. Airlines also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/number-of-people-banned-by-us-airlines-not-wearing-mask-2021-1">banned thousands of passengers for not wearing masks</a>, though many of those passengers <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-airline-passengers-banned-for-masks-are-allowed-back-on-planes-2022-4">regained their flight privileges</a> with airlines once the mask mandate was lifted.Because Wright was so sure she didn't do what she was accused of, she said she was even more committed to getting herself off of the airline's "refuse" list. She pulled out all the stops."In my email to them, I was literally like, 'I am a 24-year-old lesbian," Wright said. "I would never have sexual relations with anybody on a plane, but definitely not a man.'"Business Insider has seen the emailed appeal to American Airlines in which Wright said she has "never been intoxicated on a flight" and is not acquainted with the man the airline accused her of "engaging in sexual activity" with. She said the situation "is definitely a mix-up with another passenger.""I could have many people write letters on my behalf confirming that I would never engage in such activities. American Airlines has either mixed me up with another Erin Wright or confused me for another passenger," she wrote.In the end, it worked."I finally got a call from corporate security saying, 'We haven't figured out what happened, but we feel like you've been diligent enough in your communication with us and genuine enough that we're going to take you off the no-fly list until we do figure out what happened. And if it was you, we'll put you back on it, but if not, you're not going to hear from us anymore,'" Wright recalled.Her story went viral when she shared it on TikTok, and many viewers tagged American Airlines, which only compensated her for the June flight."They never offered anything," Wright said. "In one of my emails, I said, 'I expect to be compensated for the extra flight I had to book and for the inconvenience that this was."The company did not reimburse her further for her trouble.

Airlines are scrambling to fix the unsustainable crisis caused by too many cheap flights

A massive Microsoft outage is causing disruption across the world for airlines, banks, and retailers

To succeed, according to Bastian, airlines need to understand that the definition of providing value to customers, which has traditionally been having the lowest fares, no longer rings true."I'm convinced across the industry is rewarding those that are providing real value, meaning a better quality experience, better value for money in terms of the product we are offering and reliability," Bastian said.It seems America's low-cost carriers agree with Bastian's sentiments. Both Frontier and Spirit announced in May that they're cutting several of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spirit-frontier-fees-bags-seats-snacks-how-to-avoid-paying-2024-6">ancillary fees they frequently charge passenger</a>s.
