At the same time, the airline will focus more on consolidating on the domestic routes and will not be adding many destinations, while the international network may see some marginal increase, said the sources aware of the development. Air India Express currently operates 350 daily flights and has a fleet of 69 planes. It has some 1,300 pilots, including 400 of <keyword id="20436831" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airasia-india" source="keywords">AirAsia India</keyword>, and another 400 on training. Air India Express will commence flights to Nepal, Bangladesh and <keyword id="19931726" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sri-lanka" source="keywords">Sri Lanka</keyword> during the forthcoming summer schedule, as per the sources. They also said that Air India Express will complete acquisition of its 50 white tail <keyword id="19915275" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="boeing" source="keywords">Boeing</keyword> 737 Max plane order by December this year, of which it has already inducted 13-14 planes. The sources also said the airline is expected to complete the merger of AirAsia India with it by the second quarter of the next fiscal. Air India Express is expecting all of AirAsia India's fleet to come on its air operator permit by July-August this year when the merger gets completed. As of now, it has three A320 neo planes of Airasia India fleet on its air operator permit.

Following the successful launch of their unified reservations system, <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword>'s subsidiary airlines - <keyword id="6378232" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="air-india-express" source="Orion">Air India Express</keyword> and <keyword id="1583080" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="airasia-india" source="Orion">AirAsia India</keyword> - are now focusing on cutting over to common airport check-in systems in a phased manner at all international terminals in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, followed by the overseas network. The unified customer interface of Air India Express and AirAsia India has witnessed a surge of visitors within days of the launch of the platform, contributing over 25 per cent of international flight revenue on the first day itself. Nearly half the bookings on airindiaexpress.com have been from international markets, with Dubai being the largest source city of traffic and other top international sources of traffic being Abu Dhabi, Doha, Sharjah, and Singapore. Domestic traffic and bookings on the platform have come from metro markets like Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai, reflecting the domestic network and hubs of AirAsia India. Flyers of both airlines are now logging in, booking, and managing reservations for both Air India Express and AirAsia India flights on the unified website, launched as a milestone in the integration of the two airlines. Online reputation management tools indicate that the integrated social media handles have the highest social reputation score amongst all Indian airlines, driven by the faster response and resolution times and massive positive sentiment and feedback on the user experience of the new website and support channels. Air India Express, AirAsia India focus on common check-in systems after unified reservations

<keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> will require more than 6,500 pilots to operate 470 aircraft that are to be supplied by <keyword id="6356166" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="airbus" source="Orion">Airbus</keyword> and <keyword id="6357957" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="boeing" source="Orion">Boeing</keyword> in the coming years, according to industry sources. Seeking to expand its fleet as well as operations, the airline has placed orders for acquiring a total of 840 aircraft that includes an option to buy 370 planes. This is one of the largest aircraft orders by any airline. Currently, Air <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> has around 1,600 pilots to operate its 113 aircraft fleet and in recent times, there have been instances of ultra-long-haul flights getting cancelled or delayed due to a shortage of crew. The airline's two subsidiaries -- <keyword id="6378232" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="air-india-express" source="Orion">Air India Express</keyword> and <keyword id="1583080" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="airasia-india" source="Orion">AirAsia India</keyword> -- together have around 850 pilots for flying their 54 planes while the joint venture Vistara has more than 600 pilots. The latter has a fleet of 53 aircraft, one of the sources told PTI. Air India, Air India Express, Vistara and AirAsia India together have a little over 3,000 pilots to operate the combined fleet of 220 aircraft. The latest Airbus firm order comprises 210 A320/321 Neo/XLR and 40 A350-900/1000. The Boeing firm order comprises 190 737-Max, 20 787s and 10 777s. "Air India is taking these 40 A350 majorly for its ultra-long-haul routes or flights which last over 16 hours. The airline will require 30 pilots -- 15 commanders and 15 first officers -- per aircraft, which means some 1,200 pilots for A350s alone," the source in the know said. According to the source, 26 pilots are required for one Boeing 777. If the airline inducts 10 such planes, it will require 260 pilots while 20 Boeing 787 will require some 400 pilots considering that each such aircraft needs 20 pilots -- 10 commanders and 10 first officers. Taken together, the induction of 30 wide-body Boeing planes will require a total of 660 pilots, the sources said. On average, each narrow-body plane, whether it is the Airbus A320 family or Boeing 737 Max, requires 12 pilots, implying that 400 such planes in the fleet will require not less than 4,800 pilots for their operations. On Thursday, Air India Chief Commercial Officer Nipun Agarwal in a Linkedin post said "the order comprises 470 firm aircraft, 370 options and purchase rights to be procured from Airbus and Boeing over the next decade". According to Air India's former Commercial Director Pankaj Shrivastava, enough opportunities have to be created for the <keyword id="646408" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="commercial-pilots-licence" source="Orion">Commercial Pilots Licence</keyword> (CPL) holders to get them to type rating. Type ratings are a particular training that makes a pilot qualify to operate a particular type of aircraft. "Air India would definitely have some plan in place. They would not be buying these planes to put them on the ground," he said. These aircraft are not going to be inducted tomorrow but over a period of time. During that period, Shrivastava said that he was confident that Boeing and Airbus along with Air India will be able to create a large enough pool of pilots by having in place the required number of flight simulators and pilots training. Air India earlier this year announced its plans to set up a training academy, which is a new initiative for the <keyword id="6355725" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-group" source="Orion">Tata Group</keyword>. The academy, being headed by AirAsia India's former CEO Sunil Bhaskaran, will rival the biggest and the best anywhere in the world, Air India Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson had said. Air India will require more than 6,500 pilots for 470 planes

Deutsche <keyword id="71561" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lufthansa">Lufthansa</keyword> AG, the largest German airline, had said that starting a domestic airline in India, which is world's fastest growing aviation market, will be a "misadventure" for the Cologne-headquartered airlines. The company has said so because of high jet fuel taxes and the cost of operations in Indian aviation market. Starting local airline in India would be a misadventure, says Lufthansa

The Tata group has absolutely denied the accusations made by its rivals that the carriers that it holds stakes in are violating the law on management control. 
 "Majority ownership and effective control of both airlines - <keyword id="1583080" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="AirAsia-India">AirAsia India</keyword> and Vistara - are with the Indian parties as per the requirements of press note 6," said a release by <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword>. "All the important decisions concerning the day-to-day operations of the airlines are taken by the management teams of these airlines under the overall supervision, control, and direction of the respective boards of directors (which include a majority of Indian nationals)." 
 The release also said that it opposes the 5/20 rule because of national interest. As of now, the rules say that local carriers can only start international flights if they have been operating for at least five years and have 20 planes in their fleet. <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword>, the Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group, had said last week that older carriers were resisting the abolition of this rule as a protectionist measure. He was later criticised for this comment. 
 
The release added that the 5/20 rule must be abolished for Indian aviation to achieve its full potential and also to improve connectivity with the rest of the world. It further said that the rule has only served to benefit foreign carriers. 
 
As an argument, the older carriers accused that AirAsia India and Vistara, two carriers in which Tatas hold stakes, are controlled by their overseas stakeholders - Air Asia Bhd and Singapore Airlines, respectively. 
 
"In Air Asia, the Indian majority ownership is spread between two independent unrelated Indian shareholders who effectively have less shareholding then the foreign partner, namely AirAsia, Malaysia. De facto therefore, Air Asia, Malaysia is the largest shareholder," said Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) in a statement. 
 
It also alleged that since KPMG, which advised the ministry in drafting the aviation policy, is consultant to Singapore Airlines since June 2015, it might have suggested changes at their behest. To this, the civil aviation ministry told ET that it would do whatever was best for the industry.

No major foreign control in AirAsia India and Vistara; Tatas deny rivals’ accusations in the ongoing 5/20 rule debate

Mumbai, Apr 22 () Budget carrier AirAsia India is likely to resume operations with a fleet of 24 planes post lockdown, according to a source. Amid financial woes, the airline is also unlikely to induct any new aircraft this fiscal.A joint venture between Tata Sons and Malaysia's AirAsia Berhad, the Bengaluru-based airline has 29 Airbus A320 planes in the fleet, catering to 21 domestic destinations.All domestic and international commercial passenger flight operations have been suspended during the lockdown, which was initially imposed from March 25 to April 14 and thereafter extended till May 3. Soon after the extended date was announced on April 14, some of the Indian carriers announced that they would recommence flight operations in a phased manner from May 4 and had started taking bookings also.The government later directed them not to do so and wait till further orders on the issue."The travel demand is not going to come back any time soon. We are expecting initially it would be the stranded people in different state capitals and cities of the country, who have been waiting to return to their original places, will be rushing to the airport whenever lockdown ends and air services are allowed to operate," said a source from AirAsia India. Since it would take a lot of time for even the domestic traffic to return to normal, carrying out operations with the entire fleet will not be financially prudent, he said."Considering these factors, we are looking to put only 24 aircraft in service with reduced frequencies when we restart operations after the lockdown. And once the traffic starts picking up, we will also ramp up both the fleet and the services," the source said.AirAsia India spokesperson refused to comment on queries. According to a recent survey by global aviation and aerospace consultancy ICF, the aviation industry may take six months to two years to recover from the severe blow dealt by the coronavirus pandemic.Last week, AirAsia India had said, " we look forward to resuming our operations soon, once we receive the appropriate approvals. Preparations are underway to implement and strictly adhere to the social distancing guidelines laid out by the government across all facets of our operations as the safety and security of our guests and crew is our top priority."The source also said the airline is unlikely to induct any new aircraft this fiscal owing to an expected low demand, "if market dynamics changes and there is any sudden spurt in domestic traffic then it would prefer subleasing from the parent AirAsia Berhad than going for fresh deliveries."The airline, which narrowed its losses to Rs 123.35 crore in the December quarter of the previous fiscal, had added nine planes in the fleet to take total number of aircraft to 28 as on December 31, 2019. Since then it has taken delivery of only one aircraft in January this year.In late January, European aviation major Airbus had announced it was deferring aircraft deliveries to the Indian customers through March 9. AirAsia India likely to restart operations with 24 aircraft post lockdown

The Indian government is ready to let go of one of the major conditions for airlines to be able to fly abroad. 
 
As reported earlier, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/5/20-rule-for-Indian-airlines-must-be-scrapped-says-Tata-Sons-Mukund-Rajan/articleshow/47957886.cms">5/20 rule</a> for airlines say that they must have flown on domestic routes for five years and have a minimum of 20 aircrafts in their fleet to be able to fly on inteenational route. However, the five-year rule doesn’t feature in a note circulated by the civil aviation ministry for inter-ministerial consultations on Friday, suggesting that it might be reconsidered <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Civil-aviation-industry-to-say-goodbye-to-the-5/20-formula/articleshow/50282911.cms">as was demanded</a>. 
 
Apart from this, a new condition suggests that every airline will have to maintain 20% of the total capacity in the domestic sector all the time. 
Most likely, this will be made into the final policy because ministers have informally approved this in their meetings. 
 
"We have the consent of all these ministers and ministries and the cabinet approval should come by the end of this month," said a senior aviation ministry official on the condition of anonymity. 
 
PM Modi has earlier said that he wants the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Vistara-and-AirAsia-must-be-on-cloud-nine-PM-Narendra-Modi-is-in-favour-of-scrapping-5/20/articleshow/49011415.cms">rule to be scrapped</a>. 
 
If the rule is scrapped, Vistara and AirAsia India, launched in 2015 and 2014 respectively, will get immediate benefit as they would be able to fly on profitable international routes even before they complete five years on local routes. However, both of them would have to add more planes to their fleet, given that Vistara has 11 and AirAsia has 14 aircrafts as of now.

The 5-year rule for Indian airlines seems to have finally been scrapped

According to media reports, <keyword id="1625599" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Asia-India">Air Asia India</keyword> is planning to start operation from Delhi from February 2015. AirAsia is likely to deploy two Airbus A320 planes in Delhi and it is mulling to operate flights on Delhi-Bengaluru and Delhi-Goa routes. 
 <keyword id="86568" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Asia">Air Asia</keyword> India’s Chief Executive Officer Mittu Chandilya said the airline is considering the plan, but has not taken a final decision so far. However, he refused to divulge any details about the potential routes. 
 
AirAsia India had launched its service in June this year and it has two Airbus A320 planes. It is likely to add 8-10 planes in 2015. It commenced its domestic operations with a Bangalore-Goa flight and flights to Chennai, Kochi, Chadigarh, Jaipur and Pune. 
 
Earlier, AirAsia had said it would not operate flights on Delhi and Mumbai routes due to high airport charges. But now it seems to have changed its plan. 
 
"If AirAsia is to be an effective national carrier it will have to have a hub in North India too," a newspaper reported.

It is time for celebration for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Vistara+">Vistara</a> and <keyword id="1583080" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="AirAsia-India">AirAsia India</keyword> as they may soon be able to fly international flights. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Prime+Minister+Narendra+Modi+">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a> has favoured the scrapping of the 5/20 eligibility rule that does not allow Indian carriers to fly overseas. 
 
According to the rule, they have to complete five years of domestic service and have a fleet of 20 aircraft before they could fly overseas. 
 During a meeting on August 25, Modi made his views clear while discussing the new civil aviation policy, which is being formulated. Removal of the 5/20 rule is part of the proposals. The meeting was also attended by ministers of civil aviation, finance and skill development &amp; <keyword id="107737" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Entrepreneurship">entrepreneurship</keyword>, as well as top officials of the aviation ministry. 
 
Modi said in the meeting that the rule should be scrapped and no alternative should be introduced, said an official who attended the meeting. 
 
"If the rule is stifling the growth of our carriers, the rule should completely be abolished and not replaced. What is the need to replace a rule with something when the rule itself is not pro-growth," the official said, quoting Modi. 
 
The decision to remove the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=5%2F20+rule+">5/20 rule</a> is final, the official said. 
 "The ministry would, however, still seek public consultation on either to replace or to completely abolish 5/20," the official said. The draft policy may be published by the end of this month seeking public comments. <keyword id="157652" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="aviation-secretary">Aviation Secretary</keyword> RN Choubey didn't reply to an SMS and phone calls seeking comment on the discussions while a civil aviation ministry spokesman said he could not comment on the matter. 
 Removal of the regulation is set to widen the divide between the new and old carriers. <keyword id="6358200" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jet-Airways">Jet Airways</keyword>, the nation's oldest private airline, as well as IndiGo and SpiceJet, which had to meet the conditions under the 5/20 rule before they were allowed to fly overseas, are against its abolition. 
 According to them, scrapping of the rule would give new entrants an unfair advantage. <keyword id="2467342" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vistara">Vistara</keyword> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=AirAsia">AirAsia</a>, the newest airlines in India, want the rule to go. The civil aviation ministry has been considering removal or replacement of the 5/20 rule for 15 months, but has not been able to decide. 
 
The meeting late last month considered several options to replace the 5/20 rule, the official said. 
 
Apart from lifting all restrictions, which the PM favoured, these included a domestic flying credits formula requiring 300 points for flying international and a requirement to deploy at least 5 aircraft in the domestic sector. 
 
Analysts supported the PM's suggestion to abolish the rule, which, one of them said, promotes restrictive and negative regulations. 
"No one except <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Jet+Airways+">Jet Airways</a> has benefited from 5/20 regulation and it is time to correct this distortion immediately," said Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation Chief Executive Kapil Kaul. 
 
"The country cannot continue with our policy of liberalizing for foreign carriers and restricting/constraining the Indian carriers," he said. "This does not happen anywhere and cannot be supported."
