Remember the pictures of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin locked in a good-natured embrace that had surfaced on the internet not long ago? While they might not be indicative of the leaders’ alignment in their politics, it is certainly representative of the close ties between India and Russia on multiple strategic aspects, including their respective space programs.<br /><br />The two nations have been mostly pally with each other since India’s post-independence — despite tensions between the US and USSR. And what is perhaps the best example of this friendship would be how the Soviet Union has contributed to the establishment and growth of India's space program.<br />      <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111577453" title="Modi&amp;#39;s Russia visit shows India isn&amp;#39;t worried about making the US mad" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>India's space program, conceived in the 1960s under the visionary leadership of Dr <keyword id="20550009" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vikram-sarabhai" source="keywords">Vikram Sarabhai</keyword>, was primarily focused on utilising space technology for national development. Unlike the space programs of the United States or the Soviet Union, which were heavily influenced by military competition and the Cold War, India's space endeavours were rooted in civilian and developmental objectives. Recognising the potential of space technology, India sought international cooperation, and the Soviet Union emerged as a crucial partner.<br /><br />As India celebrates its first <keyword id="18542869" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-space-day" source="Orion">National Space Day</keyword>, we would be remiss to not acknowledge all that Russia has done for our nation in terms of space exploration. And here are seven examples of the USSR's involvement during <keyword id="19915124" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ISRO" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="ISRO" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="ISRO">ISRO</keyword>'s early years, with multiple instances of assistance.<br /><h2>1. Aryabhata satellite (1975)<br /></h2>The USSR was instrumental in the launch of India's first satellite, Aryabhata, in 1975. While the satellite was designed and developed by Indian scientists, it was launched using a Soviet Kosmos-3M rocket from the Kapustin Yar launch site in Russia. This marked India's first step into space and would not have been possible without Soviet support.<br /><br /><h2>2. Training of ISRO scientists</h2>Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, many Indian space scientists received training in Soviet institutions. This included training in areas like satellite communications, telemetry, and space mission operations. The transfer of technical knowledge was crucial for ISRO as it developed its own capacity to build and operate satellites independently.<br /><h2>3. Bhaskara-I and Bhaskara-II satellites (1979 and 1981)</h2>The USSR launched two Indian Earth observation satellites, Bhaskara-I and Bhaskara-II, which were crucial for remote sensing applications in areas like meteorology, oceanography, and hydrology. Launch of apple satellite (1981)</h2>The Ariane Passenger Payload Experiment (APPLE) satellite, India's first experimental communication satellite, was launched in 1981 with Soviet assistance. While the satellite was launched aboard a European Ariane rocket, the Soviet Union provided crucial technical support during its development and also supported telemetry during its early operations.<br /><h2>5. Tracking and telemetry support</h2>The USSR provided technical and infrastructural support to India by helping set up tracking and telemetry stations in India. These facilities were essential for controlling and receiving data from Indian satellites. Soviet technical assistance helped India develop its ground infrastructure for space missions.<br /><h2>6. Interkosmos program (1984)<br /></h2>Under the Soviet Union's Interkosmos program, India participated in a manned spaceflight mission. Rakesh Sharma, an Indian Air Force pilot, was sent into space aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11 spacecraft, making him the first Indian to travel to space. This was a landmark event for India's space program, showcasing the close collaboration between ISRO and the Soviet space agency.<br /><h2>7. Support for PSLV development</h2>In the early 1990s, during the development of ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), the Soviet Union provided guidance and support, particularly in rocket propulsion technology. This collaboration helped ISRO overcome technical hurdles and achieve greater self-reliance in launching satellites.<br /><br />The dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 marked the end of an era in Indo-Soviet space collaboration. However, the legacy of the USSR's contributions to ISRO continues to influence India's space program. Russia, as the successor state of the Soviet Union, maintained friendly ties with India, and space collaboration continued, albeit with a different focus and scale. 7 times Russia aided India's space program — in chronological order

Tata Group-owned <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword>, which placed a 250-aircraft order with <keyword id="6356166" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airbus" source="Orion">Airbus</keyword> earlier this year, has rejigged the order, which will now have more number of A321neo <keyword id="6385716" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aircraft" source="Orion">aircraft</keyword>, according to sources. As part of the 250 aircraft order with Airbus, the airline was to acquire 210 narrowbody A320 family planes, comprising 140 A320neo and 70 A321neo and remaining 40 widebody A350s, consisting of six A350-900 and 34 A350-1000s. <br /><br /> Air India has tweaked the order with Airbus and will now acquire 140 A321neo and 70 A320neo, while the order for 40 A350s has also been rejigged, the source said. <br /><br /> As against the earlier order of six A350-900 and 34 A350-1000s, Air India has changed it to 20 A350-900s and 20 A350-1000s, the source added. <br /><br /> In response to a PTI query, Air India spokesperson said, "We regularly review our orderbook based on business requirements and opportunities, and exercise contractual flexibilities as appropriate". <br /><br /> When reached out for comments, Airbus said, "It is up to our customers to disclose their strategy." <br /><br /> Tata Group took control of loss-making Air India in January 2022. <br /><br /> Earlier this year, Air India placed orders for 470 aircraft from Airbus and <keyword id="6357957" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="boeing" source="Orion">Boeing</keyword> at USD 70 billion (based on published list prices). <br /><br /> Its Boeing aircraft order for 220 aircraft comprises 190 Boeing 737MAX narrowbody planes, 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 10 Boeing 777X.

Air India rejigs 250-aircraft Airbus order

<keyword id="19895282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai" source="keywords">Mumbai</keyword>, Low-cost carrier <keyword id="19923231" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india-express" source="keywords">Air India Express</keyword> is looking to operate 40 per cent more flights next fiscal on the back of fleet expansion, sources said on Wednesday. At the same time, the airline will focus more on consolidating on the domestic routes and will not be adding many destinations, while the international network may see some marginal increase, said the sources aware of the development. <br /><br /> Air India Express currently operates 350 daily flights and has a fleet of 69 planes. <br /><br /> It has some 1,300 pilots, including 400 of <keyword id="20436831" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airasia-india" source="keywords">AirAsia India</keyword>, and another 400 on training. <br /><br /> Air India Express will commence flights to Nepal, Bangladesh and <keyword id="19931726" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sri-lanka" source="keywords">Sri Lanka</keyword> during the forthcoming summer schedule, as per the sources. <br /><br /> They also said that Air India Express will complete acquisition of its 50 white tail <keyword id="19915275" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="boeing" source="keywords">Boeing</keyword> 737 Max plane order by December this year, of which it has already inducted 13-14 planes. <br /><br /> The sources also said the airline is expected to complete the merger of AirAsia India with it by the second quarter of the next fiscal. <br /><br /> Air India Express is expecting all of AirAsia India's fleet to come on its air operator permit by July-August this year when the merger gets completed. <br /><br /> As of now, it has three A320 neo planes of Airasia India fleet on its air operator permit.

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], July 15 (ANI): <keyword id="19906966" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ashok-Leyland" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ashok Leyland" meta.hostid="265" meta.entityid="Ashok Leyland">Ashok Leyland</keyword> has announced that the company has secured the single largest fully built bus order from the <keyword id="20577309" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra-State-Road-Transport-Corporation" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation" meta.hostid="265" meta.entityid="Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation">Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation</keyword> (<keyword id="20276774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MSRTC" source="keywords">MSRTC</keyword>) for 2,104 units of Viking passenger buses.<br /><br />According to a press release, the total consideration for this order is approximately Rs 981.45 Crores. The execution period for this contract spans from August 2024 to August 2025.<br /><br />MSRTC operates a fleet of over 15,000 buses. With this substantial order, Ashok Leyland buses will now dominate its fleet. These modern, fully built buses will comply with the latest Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) standards and feature AIS 153 compliant bodies.<br /><br />The order, awarded by the domestic entity MSRTC, is for the supply of BSVI OBD II Diesel Fuel Type Fully Built Passenger Buses. MSRTC, one of India's largest state transport undertakings, operates a fleet of over 15,000 buses.<br /><br />With this substantial order, Ashok Leyland buses will now dominate its fleet. These modern, fully built buses will comply with the latest Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) standards and feature AIS 153 compliant bodies.<br /><br />They will also be equipped with the proven iGEN6 BS VI OBD II technology, boasting a 197 HP H-Series Engine and Rear Air Suspension, among other advanced features.<br /><br />The buses will be manufactured at Ashok Leyland's exclusive bus body plants using state-of-the-art technology, ensuring enhanced safety, improved comfort, and a lower total cost of ownership for MSRTC.<br /><br />Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director and CEO of Ashok Leyland, expressed his excitement about the continued partnership with MSRTC.<br /><br />He stated, "We are excited to continue our long-standing partnership with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). Senior Cabin crew members of Tata-owned <keyword id="6378232" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-india-express" source="Orion">Air India Express</keyword> (AIX) have voiced concerns over alleged breach of code of conduct by the company and sought the Union Civil Aviation Ministry's intervention in the matter.<br /><br />Senior staff claim that they are facing mental harassment and abrupt contract reductions, raising doubts about the airline's management practices.<br /><br />"As per the latest employment letter issued by the management, cabin crew members are not permitted to take part of any trade union activities. This decision has been made to break the unity and stop Union work in the name of Air India Express Employees Union registered under BMS," reads the letter sent by the AIX employees union to Civil Aviation Minister <keyword id="29632" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jyotiraditya-scindia" source="Orion">Jyotiraditya Scindia</keyword>.<br /><br />The letter further claims that as per the recent decision taken by the HR team led by <keyword id="211858" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="anjali-chatterjee" source="Orion">Anjali Chatterjee</keyword>, contracts of four cabin crew members did not recommend for renewal without any reason of justification. The decision has been taken after conducting the assessment programme for contract renewal even after fulfilling all parameter's stipulated by management, the union claimed.<br /><br />"Nine numbers of cabin crew contracts were curtailed from five years to one and other members of the cabin crew received three years tenure. There is no parameter stipulated in company HR circular to issue conditional contract for one year. This curtailment was done based on the assessment program without revealing the cause of action. There was no transparency in Communication maintained," the union said.<br /><br />It further alleged harassment and torture by the company's assessment team. "During assessment led by <keyword id="19458308" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="megha-singhania" source="Orion">Megha Singhania</keyword>, cabin crew were asked and commented about their complexion, language and accent, and questioned the performance ability of female crew because of their motherhood who had reported post maternity leave. So this harassment creates mental stress for cabin crew when they are on duty which may affects the safety of passengers as well."<br /><br />The union also alleged that certain "unethical" practices have been observed within the organisation, including the manipulation of height measurements to affect BMI calculations for contract renewal.<br /><br />"The current height measurement equipment is non-calibrated, and this discrepancy has resulted in wrongful de-rostering of employees from duty. Furthermore, a distressing incident involving an Air India Express cabin crew member who suffered a spinal injury on duty and now faces a life in a wheelchair has brought to light issues of discrimination and lack of equal employment opportunities," reads the letter.<br /><br />"The employee's contract was terminated without considering ground work suitable for his limited abilities, leading to a legal dispute for justice. Although the Disability Commission ordered the allocation of an Assistant Operations role for one year, no actual job was assigned, and the contract termination was merely postponed. This situation contradicts the <keyword id="8555" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata" source="Orion">Tata</keyword> Code of Conduct's commitment to equal opportunities for all employees, regardless of disability," it added.<br /><br />The letter also suggested irregularities in recruitment and promotions by COO Pushpinder Singh.<br /><br />"Discrepancies in contract tenure for cabin crew members, favouritism, and monopolistic practices have raised concerns about fair labour practices within the organisation," the union alleged.<br /><br />"It is very shocking to know that under TATA banner Air India Express COO Capt. Pushpinder Singh running this organization as his own Whims and fancies. Pilot recruitment, Promotion etc. handling comes under him and he is mis utilising the authorities in a corrupted way. One of the cabin crew who has three warning letter in personal record and who is in good relation with him received full five year contract tenure where as other cabin crew who are part of union denied the justice and offered conditional contract for minor errors without a single warning letter. All these show how monopolistically he is driving the system in this reputed organisation," reads the letter.<br /><br />"Despite numerous attempts, our union has been denied the opportunity to discuss these concerns with CEO Mr. <keyword id="5778454" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aloke-singh" source="Orion">Aloke Singh</keyword>, who appears resistant to addressing the issues raised. It is evident that there is a systemic problem, and we urge intervention to rectify the unjust treatment towards cabin crew employees at Air India Express Ltd. Your attention to this matter is crucial to upholding the principles of fairness, equality, and ethical conduct within the organisation," it added.<br />
