"The six major metro airports in India that include Delhi, <keyword id="6358070" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mumbai" source="Orion">Mumbai</keyword>, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad together currently have a passenger handling capacity of 320 million," Bansal said. The civil aviation secretary also said that Delhi's terminal one (T1) expansion work will be completed by August- September this year. "We hope that terminal 1 will get expanded and the three terminals at Delhi airport collectively will have a capacity of handling of 100 million passengers per year," Bansal said. The fourth runway will get operational by August by which the air traffic movements correspondingly would increase, he said. He said that Air India's privatisation provides a level-playing field for other carriers and there is excellent scope for international connectivity growth, given India has a large diaspora of 30 million. "India is allowing Foreign Aircrew Temporary Authorization (FATA) pilots for 777s because there is demand but no skilled competency available," he said. In view of the huge demand for international and domestic travel, the challenge will be building world-class infrastructure, he added. He also said that there is a need for 19-seater aircraft exists in India now to connect tier 3 and 4 cities. He appreciated the UDAN scheme and called it unparalleled. He also said that Air India Engineering Services Ltd's (AIESL) investment plans are in the advanced stages. Bansal, a 1988-batch IAS officer of Nagaland cadre, is at present additional secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment as the CMD of Air India in the rank and pay of additional secretary, the order stated, without mentioning further details.He replaces Ashwani Lohani, who completed his one-year extended tenure on Thursday. Bansal was in August 2017 named as Air India's interim CMD for three months. He had then replaced Lohani, who was appointed chairman of the Railway Board after completion of his two-year stint. During Bansal's three-month tenure, Air India launched services to Copenhagen, among others. He also initiated various steps to reduce costs and improve on-time performance of flights.Lohani, a 1980 batch officer of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers, was in February last year appointed Air India's CMD for the second time for a one-year tenure. He had retired as the Railway Board chairman in December 2018. The services of an employee will be terminated in accordance with service regulations/standing orders/ applicable rules if the employee concerned fails to make such prior declaration/ seek permission,” according to the order. Air India is sending employees on a 5-year leave without pay to cut down costs

Alleging blatant discrimination by <keyword id="2573" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-India">Air India</keyword>'s Personnel and Finance Departments, the pilots have told the national carrier's management that if such behaviour continues unchecked, the Director, Personnel will be responsible for the consequences. In a letter to Air India Chairman and Managing Director Rajiv Bansal, the pilots' associations, the Indian Commercial Pilots Association and the Indian Pilots Guild, have alleged that the management is discriminating against the pilots. "We request you to kindly direct the concerned departments to clear backlogged files as well as outstanding dues for all pilots. We have cooperated unconditionally above and beyond the call of duty to ensure smooth flight operations. This blatant discrimination, among other grievances, has severely hampered our morale and faith in these departments. If such behaviour continues unchecked, the Director, Personnel will be responsible for the consequences to follow," the pilots said. "We would like to bring to your notice the lackadaisical attitude of the Personnel and Finance Departments in ensuring <keyword id="136144" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Timely-action">timely action</keyword> and payment when it comes to pilots," the letter said. "When it comes to doling out promotions en masse for themselves or other support departments, not even a pandemic or national lockdown can dent their enthusiasm. When even retrospective deductions are made on our wages with immediate effect by way of prompt circulars, why do the same people drag their feet when it comes to clearing our rightful dues or honouring our service conditions?" the pilots asked. Citing examples of this "lackadaisical attitude", the pilots said that the Special Pay increment, as per the bilateral wage agreement between the management and the ICPA of January 1, 2016, mentions a yearly increment as per years of service in the grade. "No increment has been made in special pay since 2019. This routine exercise is never given priority, as pilots are the prime beneficiaries. Further, despite clear directions from the Hon. <keyword id="6354977" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword>, the 2016 wage has been illegally and unilaterally imposed upon pilots of the IPG who already have a separate bilateral wage agreement. The TMU (Temporary Medically Unfit) Insurance compensation for pilots is never paid on time. Pilots are made to run after their files from one department to the next till there are no more excuses to delay processing. At times, the delay is in years," they said. The pilots alleged that the Captain or Commander Grade revision is never carried out on time, despite being a routine annual exercise. Then, <keyword id="9693120" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-personnel-department">the Personnel Department</keyword>'s draft Establishment orders are replete with mistakes/omissions which has to be corrected through repeated representations, they said. "Why is the cost of the inefficiency of the Personnel Department being paid by pilots?" they asked. The PMU (Permanently Medical Unfit) compensation to any affected pilot is again never paid on time. As mentioned above, the affected pilot is made to run from pillar to post for his/her rightful compensation. "Please note that these pilots have lost their source of livelihood as they are permanently grounded. They are being let down by the company when they need it the most," the pilots said. Mumbai, Apr 9 () Air India chief Rajiv Bansal on Thursday said that the "crippling effect" of the novel coronavirus has further plummeted the airline's finances to a "precarious" position but despite that, it has managed to keep afloat.Bansal, in a message on Thursday, also assured the employees of providing all the "essential armoury" in carrying out evacuation and chartered flights amid the pandemic."Air India has been passing through a critical financial condition much before the Covid19 onslaught. The crippling effect of the pandemic, especially in the aviation sector, has further plummeted our finances to a precarious position. In spite of this, your airline has left no stone unturned to continue to remain afloat," Bansal said in a message to Air India employees on Thursday.Reminding the employees that the organisation is always with them during these trying times, he said, their safety and health are as important to the company as of its passengers."We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure you get all the essential armoury to fight this war. Our dedicated medical services team members are available round the clock for any consultation, advice or emergency. New Delhi, Jul 15 () Air India has started the process of identifying employees, based on various factors like efficiency, health and redundancy, who will be sent on compulsory leave without pay (LWP) for up to five years, according to an official order. The airline's board of directors have authorised its Chairman and Managing Director Rajiv Bansal to send employees on LWP "for six months or for a period of two years extendable upto five years, depending upon the following factors - suitability, efficiency, competence, quality of performance, health of the employee, instance of non-availability of the employee for duty in the past as a result of ill health or otherwise and redundancy", the order said on Tuesday. The departmental heads in the headquarter as well as regional directors are required to assess each employee "on the above mentioned factors and identify the cases where option of compulsory LWP can be exercised", stated the order dated July 14. "Names of such employees need to be forwarded to the General Manager (Personnel) in headquarter for obtaining necessary approval of CMD," the order added. In response to queries regarding this matter, Air India spokesperson said,"We would not like to make any comment on the issue." Aviation sector has been significantly impacted due to the travel restrictions imposed in India and other countries due to the coronavirus pandemic. All airlines in India have taken cost-cutting measures such as pay cuts, LWP and firings of employees in order to conserve cash flow. For example, GoAir has put most of its employees on compulsory LWP since April. India resumed domestic passenger flights from May 25 after a gap of two months due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the airlines have been allowed to operate only a maximum of 45 per cent of their pre-COVID domestic flights. Occupancy rate in Indian domestic flights has been around 50-60 per cent since May 25. Scheduled international passenger flights continue to remain suspended in India since March 23.
